Stuck on "phone..!..computer"...tried it all! - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Long story short...after bootlooping my phone trying to flash it, I was able to get it into download mode after A LOT of trying button/time/etc...combos. Used Odin one click, reset phone, it booted up and all looked well. Powered down phone, tried to power back on and I get the "connecting" screen. I've literally looked these (and other) forums up and down for HOURS AND HOURS.
Tried all the possible 3 button combos I've read about...no dice, continues to go into "connecting", so after MANY attempts, I broke down and made a home made jig. Didn't work either. Thought I may have did it wrong, so I ordered one...nope, still no luck. Thought maybe it was bad...ordered a 2nd one from different person...and wham...NOTHING. Returning it or anything is completely out of the question, (another long story), so I'm stuck with a phone that doesn't work and am out of options.
Is there ANY known ways to fix this considering all I've tried? Ready to explode from trying so long lol.
Samsung Galaxy S Captivate, SGH-1897

Have u tried using that screen as a Download Mode screen ?? Odin or Heimdall may acknowledge recognition of your phone from that screen. If so, then try the Stock GB 2.3.5 i897ucKK4 here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18370912

You can contact Josh at http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/. They fix these at a reasonable price. I have heard that your phone is always salvageable if it displays something on the screen.
Did you only try one odin one click? What OS are you running? Don't despair!

What rom were you trying to flash? If it was an ics build you might need the nexus USB drivers for odin to recognize your device. Also to use hemdall you have to use a different USB port than what you normally use for Odin. Both Odin and hemdall kinda claim that port once its used by that particular program..

Bit of an update...
Left phone sitting overnight with USB connected to it and computer with the phone/computer screen showing. Stuck jig in, did a weird combo with another jig (2 jigs combined with both on 4/5 and 1 resistor)...did nothing. Plugged back into computer and for the FIRST time, I got a message from windows saying that it didn't recognize the device...IE...it finally atleast recognized the phone. Tried opening Odin and Hemdal just to see if they would pick it up...neither did. So after trying to install the drivers again (did sucessfully, but didn't recognize phone), I unplugged phone and repeated the entire process down to the letter...and nothing again. 2nd time, computer didn't recognize phone being plugged in.
Thought maybe this would give some more info...sooooooo wanting to get this fixed.

Did u try it with the nexus usb drivers as robm1911 suggested above ??

I've tried the Nexus drivers from Samsung site if that's what you mean...same result.

I had the same problem with my captivate, the heimdall drivers conflict with the Samsung ones. download the generic Samsung drivers, run the program and install it, then open up Odin, plug the phone in while it's on the triangle-!-computer screen. Should recognize it.

Re-downloaded Samsung drivers...no change. Tried 5 different cords on 2 computers...just won't register the device being there.

U may have tried this but.....how about uninstalling all drivers--i897, nexus, heimdall(libsusb), etc. then start from there. Install, etc. Idk, may be worth a try.

Well, haven't removed ALL of the drivers, but I have tried 2 other computers that have never had any of the drivers on them and windows doesn't pick up the phone to ask for drivers so I manually put Samsung ones on...still nothing.

[Q] PC won't recognize my sisters captivate, mine works fine though.

My sister has the same phone as me, and I havent flashed a new rom for her since she bought it. (shes running SRE 1.2.1a)
I had no problems with this phone before, but now when I went to plug it up just to backup all her stuff my PC won't recognize it. "USB Device Not Recognized" message on PC.
Its set on USB mass storage mode, and USB debugging is checked. I also tired manually installing the driver again, but it still doesn't work. Any ideas?
Long shot but try a different usb port.
Where did you get the usb drivers. There are a couple of sources. Maybe trying a second source may help.

I want to try to just flash a different rom through rom manager, but i dont wanna brick it. If the phone is messed up she can at least use it with her old rom.

Both phones on the same PC? I'm guessing the could be the cause of the problem. First off, I'd try connecting her phone using another computer. You might try a fresh boot on the PC and the phone.
Did you "mount the drive" which is done from the pull-down menu on the 'phone which comes up right after the USB cable is plugged in. If that does not come up, I'd guess the "two phones on one computer" might be the problem.

[Q] SGS USB Connection Problem

Hi everyone.
I'm new on this forum and I really need your help with my SGS.
The problem I'm having is that I can't in any possible way connect SGS to my PC which is running on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.My SGS is on Eclair 2.1, I9000XXJF3.
I have tried various ways on so many forums and threads to find a way to connect with no sucess.I tried using different USB ports, tried changing USB settings from Samsug Kies to Mass Storage to Media Player, tried using USB Debuging Mode, dowloaded latest version of Kies, dowloaded latest Samsung Mobile Device Drivers for Windows 7 64-bit, cleaned PC registry, tried New Samsung PC Studio, did a factory reset, formated both internal and external SD card and tried mounting and unmountig them, basicly I've tried everything .Also there is no USB conncetion notification on my SGS no matter what I do and I've tried using different USB cables too and all of the cables had 4 connectors, not 2.Interesting thing though that SGS IS CHARGING when I connect it to any USB port.Sometimes Windows does detect SGS but it allways says "Unknown Device" and when I go to manually install drivers it says that "You allready have the best drivers installed"!! .I have tried it also on other PC in my house which has Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit with same results.I really do not know what to do more and I'm very frustrated because of this.
I would be very thankfull if anyone knows a sollution to this problem because I really like this phone but I can't update it if my USB connection doesn't work.
Thanks in advance..
Clean the port on the phone side with rubbing alcohol. I think in your case that is definately the issue (usually its about 1 in 10 by the time people post here). It always charges but its really sensitive for the drivers. This also causes issues at every computer you try.
Never hurts to clean it twice too.
You probably know already, but just in case,
the connection to Kies never worked with custom Launchers, like LauncherPro.
It's necessary to switch back to TwLauncher before connecting to Kies.
Home Switcher is a good app from the market to switch between launchers and set / clear the default.
(In case this helps anyone else.)
Ok,thanks, I will try cleaning it with alcohol and will post if it helps

Clean it again and the port on the computer. I used a pin, or you could try a toothpick, with cotton swab stuff on it. Also make sure its not bent.

it is also possible you have a dry solder joint on phone usb or micro crack in solder, this is quite common, take to service centre and get to fix if you are on warranty, dont take no for an answer

I even formated my computer, tried on a different computer with Vista on it, and sill it's the same response from evey Windows .Cleaning the USB Ports in this case didn't help , all my other USB Devices work properly on all of the USB Ports.Maybe it has somethig to do with branding, because it's Swisscom branded?
I've run of options and really don't know what to do more
Well it's likely on the phone side. If you really want to see if it was windows then you can install ubuntu and try with heimdall but it's a bit of a learning curve. Maybe a local phone shop can examine the port for you?

Yup, I tried installing even those drivers and still no luck. When I connect my phone to PC and Kies, the MTP Application on the phone says "Connected" but my PC doesn't recognize the phone even with newest drivers installed
What are you trying to do again?
Are you trying to flash with or just connect?
Cause mtp can be very buggy and just chuck kies. It's garbage. But I thought that you were trying to flash...
But you may want to try another rom. Did you try to see if download mode was recognized in odin?

Yes, I'm trying to flash my SGS to put new version of Android in.I'm just trying to find a way to connect it, by any means possible.
It enters download mode but odin doesn't recognize it, although I have installed correct drivers for SGS.
I presume odin can't detect it because my Windows won't detect it, and so I can't connect it in mass storage mode.

[Q] "Soft Brick" help needed

I've hit the dreaded phone /!\ screen. This is not the problem. Been here before and Odin recognized my phone, so I flashed to stock and all was well. What's the problem you ask? This time, neither Odin nor Heimdall respond when my phone is connected to my OEM USB cable. Here's the scenario - I was on MaxQkj3 rom, flashed to stock JF6 w/ Odin1Click without incident. Did a factory reset on the phone, then started to Odin1Click to stock GB with BL. Odin started fine, then hung up shortly after starting. At this point, I disconnected my phone from the USB cable, closed Odin1Click, opened up Odinv1.85 to flash KF1 GB w/ pit/pda/phone/csc files (have done this several times b/4 without incident). Now comes the "Oh $h!!" moment - I plug the phone back in to USB and there is no response from Odin. I pull the battery, wait, place batter back in, try to get into download mode and BAM - phone /!\ computer screen. This was two days ago. Since then, I've tried Outler's Heimdall unbrick, I've tried a homemade jig, and every other recommendation in XDA and any other site I could Google. I've watched vid's on youtube. Nothing, nada, zip. All I can get to is the same screen. I've ordered a jig, should be here next week. If you read through the One-Click Unbrick thread, my problem is similar to Rhiannon224 & one other person. (And yes, I've contacted Outler who has generously provided his input). I'm trying all the options I can before I have to ship out for repair. In the meantime, I'm open to any suggestions or recommendations.

Can't connect to pc

Bought this Galaxy S yesterday
I cant get it to connect to my pc
i have done the following.
-installed and reinstalled Kies several times
-Installed and reinstalled drivers several times
-Tried 4 different usb cables
-Tried in USB debugging mode
My phone connects to the pc and then i get a message that my phone is not recognized (windows error 43)
The phone does charge . I have tried all of the options like Samsung Kies , Mass storage , Media player
Nothing seems to work when i select media player option the mpt application starts to crash , i have read on forums that if the mtp crashes i can just select mass storage mode but when i select mass storage mode my pc says device not recognized
When i checked the Build info it says on Kernel Version 2.6.29 [email protected] #4
Firmware version is 2.1-update-1
Build number is Eclair.XWJM2
Please help me with this , i thought maybe there if i flash everything but in order to flash it i need to connect it to my pc which is becoming impossible

Are you absolutely sure that the guy sold it coz he WANTED to, & not coz he HAD to??
It's quite probable that he damaged it & then since can't fix it, so sold it away!
Anyway, Try factory reset!
If that doesn't work,
Use the Volume DOWN+Home+Power button combo to get into DOWNLOAD MODE, THEN see if the PC detects a device connected. With all those drivers, it should.
If it does, then you can go ahead & flash it using Odin, or EZOdin

Depending on what rom you've installed you may still be having driver issues. When I passed into the ICS and then JB realms the standard drivers not longer worked with my phone. I ended up having to install the galaxy nexus drivers before it would read it.
Edit: Even if what I've said above is not the case try uninstalling everything phone related that you have and start over. I know heimdall has its own drivers and they could be conflicting in there somewhere.

Edit: Even if what I've said above is not the case try uninstalling everything phone related that you have and start over. I know heimdall has its own drivers and they could be conflicting in there somewhere.

Yeah, and never try and use Odin and Heimdall on the same USB port; it won't work.
