Accessing or sharing your personal media has never been easier. With Wi-Drive, you can add 16, 32, or 64 GB of space accessed wirelessly from your mobile device. The content can be shared by three or more people so you are no longer limited to the space available on your portable device.
i am thinking about getting one of these drives, being that i has its own battery and does wifi, i figured i can charge it in the car, charge in office/home and use it all day long when i am outside
reviews doesn't look so bad, i plan on putting only media and nothing personal on it, so security won't be an issue, thoughts?

Wow great find! I'll have to think about getting one of these! Thanks!

I use a 500GB NAS drive with XMBC - allows me to stream all my movies, music to my Nexus 7 over my home Wi-Fi.
The only good thing about this is that you can take it out, although my NAS drive still could be moved to different houses.

Thanks to your review just ordered 1 but I made sure I use my Amex instead of gift card balance for double warranty
Edit @jdavet

Got the 32GB version - works great!

Good to hear. Let me know how it works out for you.

I just picked up a Pogoplug basic for $30 once all said and done. Since I already have a few external HD this was a good option for me. I signed up for one year of Pogoplug family, and get the device for free. Not exactly the same product, but might be worth checking out for someone.:good:

Root your 7 and use StickMount and OTG Mini USB cable to mount a USB Flash Drive. I got a Kingston 64GB USB 3.0 drive for $75. I got USB 3.0 to speed up transfers from my computer to the USB drive...obviously usb 3.0 doesn't do anything for the 7 (but it is backward compatible). Currently the only downside is you have to reboot after you unplug it in order for it to recognize it again.
Mini USB OTG cable: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005GGBYJ4/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00
The Kingston Drive: http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digital-DataTraveler-DTE30-64GB/dp/B007PRHNJ2/
And you can find StickMount on the Play store.
Of course, this only works for one Nexus 7...so if you need more than one person to access the drive...the OP's suggestion is better.

I picked up the 16GB on Amazon for $39 (now it's $49). I like to go camping and drive long distances, the size should be good enough for media to keep me and or the kids happy without tethering and risking using insane amounts of data.

If only I can access the files and folders DIRECTLY (AFP, SMB, etc) without the Seagate app, I'll buy it in a heartbeat.

I've played with the WiDrive and it work pretty good. It was the 32gb version. They now make a 128gb version.
I wish they had a version that allowed you to insert an sdcards into it.

Can't be formatted into NTFS. It's stuck in fat32. Fail

I mentioned it in a similar thread to this as well, but I have gone ahead and ordered one since then. Look up the Patriot Gauntlet Node if you already have some loose 2.5in HDDs or SSDs sitting around. A tiny bit more expensive considering that it does not come with a drive...but worth it if you understand its flexibility.
Found it for $100 on amazon and I have a nice 320gb Toshiba that I took out of my laptop recently to start using with it. I will probably upgrade to a 256gb SSD once they drop below $150.

A Crazy Idea for a New OTG Way to Access Data Outside Nexus (and non-cloud)

TL;DR I have a cool, but hypothetical, idea for an alternate non-cloud way to access your data
There are many threads in which people are asking (and a few hyper-ventilating and a few ranting) about how they are to access non-cloud data on an N7 in light of the Nexus 7's lack of an SD-card reader. Just to name a few threads, there are: OTG USB cable, Questions About Specs OTG or WIFI Direct, The N7 Supports OTG Through Root, HDMI out and OTG Support and For Those Worried About Lack of Storage (USB-OTG Discussion Thread). And that's just for starters. As of this writing (which may be expired, null and void by tomorrow), the options seemed to boil down like this:
1. OTG (on-the-go) use of USB-based storage. Whether this refers to a way to read a memory card, such as an SD Card, or reading from a thumb/jump/flash drive or from an external USB HDD (hard disk drive) or external USB SSD (solid-state drive).
Concerns and Disadvantages: We don't know yet the voltage of the USB port (or the electrical current load it can sustain), but it's starting to look like maybe 3.3 volts is all she wrote. If that's true, then virtually nothing that is currently available will run off the USB port unless you put a powered USB hub between the N7 and whatever you're trying to read-write from.
I don't know how you feel about dongl'ing a powered hub (or battery-powered hub) between your N7 and your storage (whether that's an SD card in a card-reader or a thumb/jump/flash drive or whatever) , but that's a lot of stuff daisy-chained onto your tablet. Perhaps acceptable when you're at home, but it's sort of Rube Goldberg-ish to think of doing that on the road, in a plane, at a coffee shop. at work....
2. PRIVATE CLOUD. Devices such as the Seagate Satellite (500gb) and the various models (64gb, 32b, 16gb) of the Kensington Wi-Drive have an on-board server and WIFI wireless access point. The Seagate claims 7+ hours (6+ in my experience based on heavy ues) and the Kensington about 4 hours. Other than turning it on, you can leave it in your pocket, backpack, purse or attaché, and it will serve, by wifi, whatever you want.
Concerns and Disadvantages: The 500gb Seagate Satellite is about $150 (if you shop hard). The 32gb Wi-Drive is about $85 and the 64gb Wi-Drive is about $180.
The Satellite is bigger than than the Wi-Drive, but both are bigger than you probably want to haul around with you.
I might... maybe... possibly... have a better idea. But it's hypothetical for the moment.
The Satellite and Wi-Drive have on-board computers (on a chip) and WIFI hardware, but their overall size is maybe more than you want. But if you removed the drive (on the Satellite) or the flash memory (on the Wi-Drive), it would not be so big, even with the battery.
What about a device like the Satellite / Wi-Drive that just reads SD Cards instead? The Satellite and the Wi-Drive are just Linux computers-on-a-chip with a battery. They're sort of like this, I guess. Anyway, what if someone manufactured a battery-powered device whose only job was to serve up, by WIFI (and to create the WIFI environment, as needed) whatver storage appeared on a memory card, such as an SD Card?
What would you pay for something like that?
Heck, I bet that many... several... a few people on this forum could take off-the-shelf components (a Linux computer-on-a-board, WIFI circuitry and a battery, plus a card reader/writer) and make it all work -- and sell it for under $99.
Google / Amazon / Apple / Big Brother, may want us to live within a "cloud envionment" but we don't have to accept that.

Hmmm... perhaps... maybe... I'm not quite the genius that I pretend to be. But thanks, though, I'll look into the AirStash. It seems just a tad overpriced, but it (and the Wi-Drive and the Satellite) is still a solution to nearly everbody's gripe about the N7 with respect to lack of an SD Card slot.
Not sure if i am missing something here but i just use the 64gb sd card on my galaxy note and my to it to access data stored there. I'll do the same with the nexus 7

ES File Explorer will also allow you to do this. It let's you read from LAN, FTP, BT....etc. I was just streaming a movie from my laptop to my Cappy using ES before checking in here. So I'm thinking it may be a viable option when tethering the tablet to my phone except I'll be serving the content from either my phone's internal storage or it's ext sd card.

Maybe I'm missing something but isn't the USB standard 5V? Seems to me nothing would run, including the controllers and such that are supposed to work(?), if 5V was not there. Unless it is something nasty like proprietary accessories only.
As far as current goes, I would think it would support at least a unit load of 100mA if it is standard compliant. I figured this would be enough for sticks or card readers but surprisingly I checked the units that I have and apparently the card reader wants 250 mA, the 8 and 16GB sticks want 300 mA and the tiny 32GB stick I bought last week for cheap wants the full 500 mA. No idea they were so hungry (maybe they aren't and just set high amounts anyways), that might blow my hopes of hooking up that tiny 32GB stick on the go out of the water... I wonder what the guys have have been playing with hooking up mass storage have been using.

Thanks for not calling me a dumba~~. If I'd posted the same thing on Reddit.com/r/android, within 15 minutes there would have been 20 people calling me an idiot for being unaware of the AirStash.
While XDA isn't immune to the occasional flame war or troll, the level of discourse here and the desire to help each other is really fantastic. I am so thankful for XDA.
I don't get why this is even being discussed. Either 8/16gb is enough for you or this tablet is NOT for you. If you need more storage, you either need 3/4g or an SD card slot and you need to move on. Who is going to walk around with a wifi hard drive in their pocket (not to mention keeping both charged)? Who is going to use a tablet with a hub and a hard drive attached to it? Who is going to use a tablet with a flash drive hanging out of it held in place only by a fragile little micro USB plug? All these solutions mean you'd be better off using a computer.
Either tether it with your phone, only use it at home or forget about it.

I might just because I can.
For the most part I just want a bigger screen to watch movies, browse the internet, and remotely connect to my computer and server and display the x11 using nvc, my phone is too small for it.
16 GB should be fine. I have 2TB on my server for cloud at home and on the go.
But if I could just plug in a usb to the tablet then that would be fine too.

How important is 16GB?

I'm poised to order my Nexus 7, but I'm torn on which to get. Anyone out there running out of space on the 8GB? with all the cloud stuff, is there a need for the extra 8GB? How much space is left for files on the 8GB version? is the extra 8GB worth $50?
5.91GB total space on my 8gb.
I'll personally just be using OTG.
I would suggest getting it if you can afford it.
90% of the time, I use it at home; but if I'm going on a plane, or the subway, or any kind of trip where I can't count on a strong WiFi or tetherable cellular signal, I don't also want to be forced to deal with size limitations that I could have very well avoided.
The way I looked at it was play store is $213 shipped for 8gb. Other retailers have the 16gb for $249 and free shipping so in essence its $36 more vs $50. That $14 saved can go towards accessories.

Go for 16 gig bro and avoid hassles... a good games like Nova 3 takes up almost 3 gigs, that alone almost fills up an 8 gigs storage.

wtf 3 gigs... Nova 3 takes up 1.7gigs.
I could survive with 8GB as I don't store anything locally like music or movies.
Depends if you are a big gamer, I got the 16 gig it was about 270 out the door at Sam's club so 213 from the play store sounds like a good deal. I live in California though so I would have had to pay sales tax so an 8 gb would have been like 230 for me from the play store.

If you intend to play movies/TV shows/videos on the thing without wifi our tethering (personally I'd never tether for video playback but whatever) then in my opinion 16 is a must. HD movies rented from Google play look amazing on this thing and will suck up about 1.8 gigs for a 2 hour movie. I can totally see myself loading a few high definition movies and watching them on a long flight without the need to transfer files via otg cable or wireless transfer.

I preordered the 8 gig and have second guessed myself the last few weeks. I decided today to refuse my 8 gig shipment and bought a 16 gig in store. I figure I may swell save $20 on shipping and use it towards the upgrade. I don't regret it at all. Especially since Google screwed up the shipping.

I weighed the pros and cons but in the end decided that having more space than I needed was better than not having enough.
If you can afford the extra 50 bucks, the 16g is a no-brainer. If you can't then should you really be spending $225(shipped) on a toy to begin with? Probably not

Down 4GB of space and I haven't even finished downloading all my games yet... For me the 16 GB was a no brainer - nothing worse then having to pick and choose what you can take with you. On the other hand, if I buy one for my parents I'll probably go with the 8GB model.
i would just...
1. Root
2. Download stickmount (free)
3. Buy an OTG adapter
Then download 30-50 movies onto a thumb drive, my whole music collection on another thumb drive.
Then plugin whatever one i wanted to use. No need to transfer files.. its like an external drive i can view or listen from.. even if no wifi is around..
I don't think alot of people understand what an OTG cable is here or something..
@Shiva,
I know what OTG is and does the point is that is external

Don't spend 50 bucks more for 16gb!

I bought an 8 GB and u know what? Its perfect! I have tons of apps installed and some videos and still have 3.5 gigs left. All of my music is either in the cloud or on my sd card. With USB otg I can watch all of my HD movies and listen to my 7 gigs of music. I dont regret not getting a 16 gig at all. I used the 50 I saved to buy a bunch of accessories. U really don't need 16 gigs. Save 50 bucks.

I don't think 8GB is enougth even for a phone... I have the 16GB version just because it's the top of todays models, but I don't think 16GB is a good storage space for a tablet. OTG isn't the same thing of having larger internal memory.

For me, OTG worked out of the box for pen drives and even for the Xbox joypad. I tested without even rooting the device and it works. It's a good alternative to have...
You don't just get more space with the 16GB, I think I heard the drive access speeds are even faster due to a different chip in use, but I could be wrong.
Install a few gameloft games then come back and tell me 8 GB is enough.

My 10.1" tablet has 80gb total storage, and it's full. I'm constantly rotating things in and out of the memory card. I leave the 16gb internal for apps and downloads and it's always within a gig or so of being full.
My Nexus 7 is not my main tablet. With 16gb and the fact wifi is not everywhere, it can't be.
The 8gb is more then sufficient for usage for normal use. But once you start throwing PlayStation roms and Nandroids, it might be limiting.
No big deal and there is always OTG and cloud storage. I stopped keeping music with me with Pandora and other streaming music apps. As long as you don't do anything crazy, the 8gb will work just fine.
Me personally, I'd rather just spend the cash just so I don't have to worry about it.

All depends on your needs. I've loaded 10 Gig of training videos local on my device to watch while I'm a passenger in a car, or if I take a trip.
Glad it worked for you though!
I bought an 8 GB for my 6 year old son to upgrade from a crappy Chinese android tablet. How ever it works out we will just deal with the 8gb internal memory.
I do also realize some of the games will really eat up some space. Question is can these games be run of a OTG flash drive? Can they be moved over to it and it work ok.
Cool thing is I have the tablet connected to a share on my nas which has lots of his movies and that work well. That old tablet could never do this. There were so many apps that were not compatible.

My six year old has an A200. She uses it a lot and has started asking me about using the OS in more detail. More than just an expensive game machine. And I let my four year old use my KF since I got the N7, but he still prefers my old gen 1 iPod Touch that he has been using since he turned 3. He plugs it in and keeps it charged up and everything. You'd be surprised how responsible they can be when they know it is a privilege.
It's 50 bucks more for storage and a lot less headaches, it's worth it to me.
For some of us that prefer to buy these at retail stores so as to not deal with the headache of going to Google to return defective Nexus 7's, it's not really a choice. I'd gladly pay the extra $50 for the opportunity to exchange in person as needed, and I did already have to do so.
Actually its only like 20 bucks more because apparently the 16GB has no tax or shipping charges. I wish i bought the 16GB model, 1 HD game and a nandroid backup, and the device feels full
Really wish I had the 16GB model. No wifi in the car so i can only hold a little music at a time on the tablet :/

I have a 16GB and its not enough, install couple Gameloft games and my ebooks and comics... less than a 1GB left and so I can't even load a movie. Just got a 64GB flash card to solve that problem :good:

There are a couple of other things on sale as well

All the reviews telling about poor writing performance on Ultra SDHC cards.
for example by Wei
"Second test was performed on Canon T3i DSLR with the same 3 SD cards tested above. In this test I set my DSLR to burst mode and TV mode with 1/50 sec. Within 30 seconds interval, I want to see how many pictures in RAW format my camera can shoot.
Results:
Sandisk Ultra 32GB class 10 30MB/s, 24 shots.
Sandisk Extreme III 4GB class 6, 34 shots
Transcend 16GB class 10, 33 shots."
I do not understand the purpose of this post... We don't have SD slots? Or am I mistaken? Can we open these babies up and slide in sd cards to replace the 16gbs?

No its for when you are using an OTG cable. It allows us to plug in hard drives, USB storage, cameras to transfer pics on the fly etc. you can pick up a cable for about $.60 with free shipping lol get a few, they get lost easily.

If you root the device then you can use a OTG cable to connect flash drives, memory card readers etc. you need to be rooted, keep that in mind.

Wireless USB Storage

Hi,
Has anyone seen anything like this:
http://www.mobiletechreview.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Number=43767
with slightly better battery life? I would be sold if it wasn't only 5 hours

not bad, lil pricey
but can you open/stream music from inside of media programs? instead of having to go to a browser and select a file from the http://usb address do you know?
If the program has the capability to play from a network source i dont see why not. as it should just see it like you would a nas through a router at home.
Been looking at the seagate satellite portable too. Only thing that's putting me off is whether the wifi will be quick enough to stream 1080p movies and im not 100% confident in that.
ok i see that one comes with an app, sweet
but $200 is a bit too pricey
i bought the 16gig version, so $100 is my limit(since it costs $100 more to get the 32 gig version) to get more than i would if i had got the 32gig version
Yeah thats my thoughts although 500GB of external storage!
Going to try and make something to go straight from micro usb to micro sd first then may come back to this.

Have been looking at going this route since the day they released the Nexus 10. There are 3 options out there currently, with the Seagate wireless HD being one of them. The other option/s are by Patriot. They came out with a 320GB version as well as a DIY wireless HD enclosure for $99 that you can buy your own 2.5" optical or SSD and supports up to 2TB.
I think i am going to go the Seagate route and pick up a 256GB or larger SSD over the black Friday/cyber Monday weekend coming up. The one perk that has me leaning towards the Seagate route as opposed to just getting the Patriot wireless enclosure and SSD is the hacked software that this group puts out specifically for the Seagate drive. They have a lot more features and functionality that they have added over the basics. Not to mention they are constantly keeping the software updated and adding new stuff. I contacted them already to see if their software would work on the Patriot enclosure and was told that it would not due to the fact that the Patriot drive and enclosure were not available worldwide.
I have included the links to the Patriot enclosure, Patriot 320GB wireless HD, and the aftermarket Seagate software websites.

I have the SeaGate Satellite (500 GB) and in all honesty, its one of the BEST purchases I've ever made. I initially bought it for my wifes iPad, expanding 64 Gigs to 500+ for $200 was more than worth it in my opinion. I store EVERYTHING on this drive, and stream my movies, etc from it. It really is awesome. And now that I finally got around to picking up the SeaGate Thunderbolt adapter, I use that to QUICKLY load files onto it. The only problem that I had was that, initially, if you connected to the Satellites WiFi, you couldnt get an internet connection. Seagate recently released a F/W update that allows you to connect to a live internet connection and the drive at the same time. So the one issue I had with the drive has been resolved. I love my drive!
Thanks for the info. I will try the micro sd first but will consider this if it goes tits up!
theres also a kingston and trascend one available, with ssds.

Very interesting. Could you explain how this works? Does it mean I can browse the internet and access the HD at the same time? Is the HD only accessible via an app and NOT as mass storage USB?
This may be a great option for N10 owners.
The seagate looks fantastic, with a battery life to almost mirror the N10 (plus it can jut be sat plugged into the wall if needs be )
A touch pricey at £130, but seems like it would be worth the money over a limited OTG option which would allow small amounts of storage or the hassle of many cards. Also means no possibility of damaging the microusb socket accidentally, nothing to plug in, and it can just sit in a bag if on a bus or train or whatnot and link straight up. Should get paid on sunday. Hmmmmm

haha, this is my dilemma! If i haven't successfully built anything by my pay day, next Friday i may splash for this!
Took advantage of some SSD deals this morning that should be here by Monday. So far I have not seen the Seagate drive go on sale and believe me I keep checking lol. I am waiting till Cyber Monday to see if the price drops at all. If not I might make the purchase this week. Then I'll be swapping the SSD in for the 500GB optical drive that it comes with and installing the hacked software from http://www.hackseagatesatellite.com/. Later I am thinking about possibly matching the specs on the battery and replacing it with a higher capacity battery, although switching to the SSD should increase battery life due to the fact that they draw less power than a traditional optical HD. I have not been able to find any good info on the exact battery specs so I am going to have to wait till I take the unit apart. Might end up having to build a new enclosure for it, but imaging 12+hrs or battery life (Really happy to be technically inclined)
I will keep everyone posted on my progress.

Also on newegg and bestbuy for the same price.
Anyone have any comments on the transfer speed? Stock vs hacked firmware?

Just got my Seagate go flex mobile satellite hard drive from new egg. They have it on sale for 99$! About $115 after taxes n shipping from US to Toronto Canada! This is going to be great expansion of storage! Also, I saw a YouTube video and this guy actually open the drive up and swap the 500gb HD to a much bigger size like a 2TB SSD. Check out His video. Can't post the kink cause its my first time posting. But search on YouTube for "how to replace the HDD for goflex satellite".
P.S. Loving my nexus 10!

Anand has reviews on the Patriot, Kingston, and Seagate devices. Sounds like they all have their limitations. I'm close to pulling the trigger on the Patriot BYOD enclosure and throwing an old Intel 160GB SSD in there.
