3rd time.....unlucky! - Nexus 7 General

Just received my 3rd nexus (16gb from new batch) and unfortunately it has pretty awful screen bleed at 3 points down the left hand side, pretty bad image retention and a ding in the bezel in the top left corner. This is the first unit i've received where the box has not been re-sealed and unfortunately it still has issues. This one does not however have the glass lifting issue.
I called google and have requested a refund as I cant invest any more time and effort into trying to get a decent unit, its a real shame as the basic design/spec and operating system of the device are spot on and i'm really disappointed to not be able to get a good one.
Good luck to the rest of you

Man, that's unfortunate, sorry to hear that. By new batch I'm assuming you mean thar you serial number started with C70K?
The one that has finally been perfect for me started with C70K and also only had one layer of tape. Sorry you weren't as lucky.

Second was from the play store.same touchscreen problem. Rmaed it.
Third was perfect, except for significant light bleed in the lower left corner. Rma.
Fourth came today...and the screen is sticking up over the bezel on the left side!

Ouch! I just got mine, am about to boot it up, hope I don't have the same luck!
At what point do you give up and get another tablet?

My 3rd replacement should be here in a day or 2, my original device and previous 2 replacements all had screen lift right out of the box.
I'm not giving up...love the device...just problems.
I'm on my original galaxy nexus....I'm really not a high maintenance customer typically...

Wow, hopefully the next one won't have the lifted display. However, if it has a dead pixel I'd call it a day and settle with it and hope nothing else crops up. I've learned with these products that you will NEVER get a "perfect unit" just one that's "good enough". Then again, with the defects like dead touchscreen spots and lifted displays these are clearly manufacturing and part issues that should be fixed.
Good luck.
I really wanted to buy one of these tablets, but hearing stories like yours is keeping me from moving forward. I'm continuing to monitor these forums to see if it improves, however, I'm losing faith and considering getting a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7-inch tablet instead. I hope you get a functional one soon. Good Luck!
It took me 4 units before I got a good one

Don't lose too much faith in the Nexus 7. It's not unusual for new products to have hardware issues on the first batch. Look at Apple's track record, I bought a launch date Intel Macbook Pro expecting a solid device. However, I was greeted with a machine that was riddled with issues. I say buy a Nexus 7 now from a retailer nearby if you can. That way if you do end up with a flawed device you can always return it to them within their return period. I've had mine since early last month and have no issues with mine.
I'm onto my third coming tomorrow. if this doesn't work out I will refund it and get the yes wait for it - iPad Mini! Hate on!
I got my third today and it's the worst one so far. I probably need to sleep on it before deciding what to do next. I'm not too happy with Google or ASUS right now though.
That's really unfortunate man. I'd say keep on trying, but thats easy for me to say. Ive been lucky enough to get a good unit n the first go round.

If this were just any old Android tablet, I'd agree. I did the same with the Transformer Prime--too many issues, too many replacements, and I finally gave up and got a refund directly from ASUS.
However, this is the only Nexus tablet, i.e., the only one that will get immediate updates directly from Google. That's worth its weight in gold. It's also going to be a great development device for people who are into that sort of thing.
It's a pain in the **** to go through all these gyrations to get a decent unit, but in this case I think it makes more sense than it would otherwise.
After reading all these replies, it honestly makes me feel bad that mine was near perfect on delivery.
The only problem I had was that there were too little scratches on the outer rim.

That's what they want you to do.
Really, any problems are small-fry. I have 2 units, and 2 have gone to relatives, and they are all perfect. Mine was a UK pre-order, the others shortly after launch,
Mine has a really slight screen lift, but you would have to look real close, and it really doesn't bother me, it's a high spec entry level device.
This is how Asus operates. If you enjoy the Prime despite its Asus inspired defects, keep it and enjoy it. If you insist on a well built device, wait for a non Asus Nexus tablet.

Could be the mold on the bezel if looking at the device from the top down.
But my replacement has two marks on the bezel as well. Looking at the screen, left side. About 3/4" from top, and bottom.
To me, it looks like they've taken it back apart to correct the screen lift issue.
I am on my first Device and have no problems with it.
Guess its just luck at the moment.

3rd times a charm? I hope.

Bought a N7 two days ago, got home and charged it and it had a defect, not from the factory, but from Walmart. The screen had some damage towards the top like too much pressure had been applied there. It didn't go away and I exchanged it for another. I took that one home and started it up and the LCD panel on it was shattered, not the outer glass. They both had slight screen lift but that didn't bother me as I believe it could be fixed. Also they were both C70's. It's just got me discouraged and pretty mad. Both boxes were damaged somewhat so that's why I think its Walmarts fault. But anyway I'll replace this one this week sometime and report back.

Yeahhhh that definitely sounds like a Wal-Mart issue there... especially considering the damaged boxes and all. Do you have pictures of the boxes? I'm curious as to what condition they were in that they A) thought it was okay to put on the shelf and B) thought they were decent enough to not even warrant opening the box to make sure... unless it's somehow against Wal-Mart policy to open items to verify they're okay? (wouldn't be entirely surprising now that I think about it)
There's not much room to play for the Nexus 7 inside the factory box. They're pretty clean cut with minimal wasted/open space. Any semi decent hits it would take, especially on the top portion, might be substantially detrimental to the tablet itself.
I did 5 exchanges at various Walmarts and they were all C8O's. I was stubborn and looking for one without and screen separation. I gave up on that mission and realize they all gonna be coming with slight screen separation. But I did manage to find 2 with minor issues. I would avoid the C7O build. Only reason being its a older build.

Good luck with #3! It took me 7! (C6,C7,C7,C7,C8,C8, and now C8..you can see how messed up my account page is now LOL) to get one I was happy with, defect free. I've seen it all now, defective batteries, dead pixels, dust under the screen, screen separation on the left. All of mine have been from Gamestop.
Also you might want to give this thread a look, if you ever need to use VIP for an RMA it's actually an "O" as shook wrote it, not a zero :good:

Just an update.
Returned my N7 and got another. It's a C80, so far no problems other than minor screen lift. Will update after a few days.

Poor Build Quality on my unit...hope there will be a solution

I was much aware of the build quality issues experienced in Europe and was wary when picking up my device. It had the tiniest gap in the middle between the top speaker grille and frame so I took it home Friday.By this morning, the gap had run all the way across the top, curved around the top left corner to the bottom of the speaker grille.
It is now big enough that my thumb nail fits.
The grille is no longer flush with the glass due to this and I get "notification bar scratches" all the time.
Took to Sprint in Hou, TX - their display was worse, they unboxed another with same issue. Now in the process of contacting HTC Rep and Area/Regional manager to find me a new phone.
Has anyone else from Sprint noticed build issues that they had in Europe?
(My ports were also jagged {this issue doesnt bother me}, but my corners matched fine until the gap widened)
Got mine from Best Buy in Houston, TX on Saturday. Build date looks like it was April 9, 2013. Build quality looks to be perfect so far. No gaps. Speakers work flawlessly. Haven't seen any gap develop over the last couple days either. My only problem so far is the capacitive home button being finicky.
How do you check the build date? (I did a forum search so dont hate)

Here is a link to the build quality issues I have with my device http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2209277&page=18 (3rd from bottom) Please let me know what HTC tells you. Will probably call them in the very near future about it. The "defects" are virtually unnoticeable but don't want it to get worse.

Unbelievable....great way to keep a customer.....it's obvious that the gap is a manufacture defect and not user related....for a company who has seen better days (putting it lightly) and taking a HUUUUGGGGEEEEE gamble with this phone, I would think they would want to keep the customers they have...word of mouth is either going to save or hurt them really badly....and than throw in the fact that the SG3-S should be coming out on Friday, doesn't make it better for them.

Sry to be so late --
I actually felt for the manager at Sprint.
My gaps are between the plastic and speaker grille (I'll take one if the opp comes but my phone is my only high res camera) - When reading forums before launch (US), I read about the "gaps", looked at the pics, etc. and chalked it up as an overreaction on 99% of Units.
But seeing as the gap on mine has gotten consistently worse, I am trying to get mine exchanged.
The Sprint Store manager was really helpful and I can understand her situation. She agreed that the phone should be seamless and my unit replaced. She was actually very nice and helpful compared to her team of idiots that passed my phone around the middle of the show floor poking and prodding and their hands were so DIRTY it was a greaseball when I got it back (If I were a lawyer, I would look into Sprint for unfair hiring practices...every store (1st party in HOU) is 100% African American and Hispanic employees. You cannot get a job their if you are white {I know many who have tried})...every executive in the entire company must be white)
The sales rep who sold me my phone had a bad attitude when I brought it back She also sold me writeright screen protectors (at initial purchase) that only covered 60% of the glass and tried to show me how they fit over the area covering the lcd...yeah the lcd isnt exposed MORON...but I didnt push the screen protectors because I mainly want a new phone, don't want to give them any reason not to help.
Store manager said she would contact her manager and the HTC rep and get back to me. This was on Monday night. Hopefully I will hear from her today.
Phone is easily the best on the market and makes the Galaxy S4 look like a pile of crap. Can you imagine Samsung even attempting seamless construction? I'm glad that HTC has finally gotten their game together. Best phone since Mogul.
Manager still hasn't called me back. Going to return it and demand no restocking fee. Then I'm going to go straight to Best Buy, buy the new phone.
Then I'm going to photocopy the receipts and email them to the Sprint District and Regional Managers.
It just amazes me how anyone can be such a ****up at job that has one task - make the contracted customer happy so he resigns his contract.

That sounds like a good idea. I'd open the box when you're at Best Buy as well, to make sure there are no gaps/scratches, etc. on the exterior before you take it home. Then, if there are, you can just exchange it right then and there.

Very hard to get a photo but i have managed take a look, i have tried scrubbing the marks off but no luck they are like stains. Each replacement the same, one or two blodges of this stain.
Yep, my brand new CW 64GB had almost the exact same spots in the exact same place on the back from day 1, I noticed it right away.
mine had one left of the dimple, really small. but I didn't mind about just one small mark (although a little annoyed) as I was putting a dbrand skin over it
Its a problem during manufacturing. I had one that didn't bother me as I use a case, but it also had a screen issue the RMA I got does not have them.
Don't have this issue .
I asked you for some photos because I noticed this issue the day you started this thread. I have one of this mark on the top corner and I use the phone always with a rear case from the first day. I tried to clean it with some alcohol . Now it's better but still visible.

I'm probably a little late to the party, but I just bought my N6 from Amazon on the 17th. It arrived on the 20th. I can't remember if it had any marks, but I don't believe it did (I checked it prior to returning it). I returned it because I thought the widespread bluetooth audio issue was defect with my device (turns out I was wrong). My replacement came in, same problems, though at this point I learned it was a common problem with lollipop. However, this one had two very tiny blemishes. They look like grease marks, or scuffs, or wet marks...but they wouldn't come out. I replaced that one with the phone I just got tonight. This one has an even LARGER scuff mark. Amazon offered to give me 20% back on the phone, and I accepted...but this is bothering me terribly. For all of you who RMA'd, were you successful in getting back a flawless unit? I'm thinking about calling Motorola in the morning and seeing if RMAing will result in a new device and if I will be able to keep the remainder of my 1 year warranty. AT&T is shady if I go through them. Last year I RMA'd a brand new device about 30 days into ownership and they told me that since I have a replacement device, my warranty was cut to 90 days for that device. I don't feel like dealing with that headache again.

Well, I dropped my N6 and broke screen for 2nd time. Alternatives?

Damage is done. Figured I may take this "opportunity" to try another device. Obviously unlockable bootloader is required. I'll dig around on some of the other forums, but wanted to ask here if anyone has experience with the Moto X Pure or Nexus 5X? Those are the two that have peaked my interest so far. Thanks for any beta you can provide.
The Nexus will be more frequently updated than the Motorola device. However, other than the screen being an IPS LCD, the X Pure I feel is the better device all around.

Lol i was going to do the same joke
From my personal story i dropped my n6 one time doing my cardio jumping rope
Phone's screen just fall right on the floor tile... I immediately check
Camera ok, screen ok etc...
1 day after ive finally see that the top bar speaker, you know the little plastic thing, was pushed. So pushed that now the top bar speaker is nearly at the same level of the frame... And led still works
I think the ringke Max cover saved my screen and I'm loving much more my n6 and his scars.
Ps: I've by a Bluetooth headset after that
Thank you I've you read this entirely

Yeah, I need something like that. I've actually cracked the screen 3 times. All of which were during periods I had the case off. Took if off to clean and lost a couple of the buttons in the case and just hadn't gotten around to ordering one.
So anyway, I just went ahead and ordered the Moto X Pure. I'll fix the N6 and maybe sell it to get a 5x too. Thanks for the feedback.
I just dropped my nexus 6, only 1/3 of the screen is lit and there's just a bunch of lines. I don't have enough money to buy a phone with equal specs. So how hard is it to replace the digitizer?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G530AZ using XDA-Developers mobile app
If you had a bad digitizer, your display would still function but touch inputs wouldn't register properly if at all. The AMOLED display is what is wrong with your device. Since digitizer and display are fused together, replacing the complete assembly is actually rather easy. However, replacement screens are not cheap. In fact, they aren't much less expensive than sending the Nexus in to Motorola and having them replace the screen for $175.
I'd like to chime in and make a suggestion.
Forearm curls.
This should help increase your grip so it won't be so easy to drop the phone.
Granted, it's an "over time solution". However, it should save some money in the long-run from lost/damaged phones.
That, or just superglue it to your palm.

It is quite easy to replace. There are plenty of video's on Youtube that show you how it works.
I bought a digitizer two month ago via Amazon. Had to release ~26 screws. Most sensitive part was to detach the connectors (very fragile!).
It went quite ok and I am now very happy with a full functional Nexus 6.
The digitizer did cost me $160,-. Quite some money, but better than a new investment in a brand new phone (A-brand).

I broke one of these and I feel your pain. I ended up just buying another from Amazon and left the broken one in my drawer. If this other one manages to break I'll probably grab a 5x or something budget. I can't be bothered to pay $175 for the repair when Moto has awful customer support now and the phone is only worth about 200 total.
