The sad state of my Nexus 7 screen...

Really disappointed - when I turned on my Nexus 7 today, I found a line of dead pixels. Immediately called customer support and they said try to reset the tablet to see if it's a firmware issue, but it still persists. Will be sending my tablet in pretty soon to have this fixed, unless you guys have any recommendations.
While this might make it sound like I'm ragging on the manufacturing, I actually love the tablet. It's extremely well built - feels great in hand, has the right heft, but is still light and extremely rigid. If any of you are on the fence about this tablet, you shouldn't. It's hands down the best deal that's out there.

Is that a Pre-Production Unit?

That sucks really bad. If I receive my device and anything is wrong with it, I'll probably die. I hate when my devices aren't perfect. Also, like the last poster said, is it a pre-production unit?

The 3 white lines are scratches and today I saw a few more around the edges near the left side.

Not Gorilla glass, Scratch resistant Corning class. Though I don't know the difference. I know my G2 was stated to have Scratch resistant corning glass and it never got a scratch in almost 2 years now.

You're definitely right. However most stuck pixels are of a color variety, dead pixels are usually just that and are completely black. If its truly dead, it will stay blacked out regardless of any action.
I am surprised though that a line like that took that long to emerge or die off, I'd have expected them to die off in production or qa. I'm curious if the op dropped or even bumped the tab at some point.
Anyway I hope the RMA process isn't too long and that u get ur tab back soon.

Dead pixels can't be fixed as they are effectively 'dead'.
Stuck pixels can sometimes be corrected. I've tried on 3 different displays and am yet to witness this.
Google should swap it for you, not repair.

Yup. So I called ASUS and they can't even issue me an RMA because the tablet hasn't be officially released yet. I'm gonna contact Google tomorrow to see if they might be able to replace the tablet for me, really hope that's possible.
Whatever happens, I just want a functioning screen on a white Nexus 7!

The io nexus 7 has Bluetooth 2.1 the black version has 4 or 3. And some other changed specs. I would think about upgrading to the black one

You probably won't be able to get another IO model.

Based on the teardown video u can just swap the backing if they let you keep your current model until you get the replacement.

Sorry to hear about the dead pixels. Have you tried any of the "dead pixel fixer" apps? Such as Display Tester

By the look of the picture, the pixels on the LCD itself might not be dead. It could be the LCD driving controller, or one of the electrical connectors have failed since all pixels are connected in rows on the X-Y plane. The electrical connection on that particular row may have failed, so you see a complete row of dead pixels.

There were screen quality issues with the transformer prime and the tranformer when they were released. I was hoping ASUS got their QC figured out by now or Google made them have a higher threshold during QC for holding them back. I am hoping I don't need to go through 3 of these like I did with my prime due to screen issues like stuck pixels, dust under the screen or white spots.

My IO N7 screen started to separate from the bezel on the left side and the white back started discoloring into blue/black.
I hope the production units are build better.

Nexus 7 Screen turns off when pressure applied while holding

When holding the Nexus 7 (portrait mode) and applying slight pressure on each side, the screen turns off and only returns when I remove the pressure. Am I the only one experiencing this?

Take off the back and try reseating any loose cables.

The first time I opened my Nexus, I used an insurance card. The second and subsequent times, I actually used a NYC metrocard.

I reported this problem to Google and they sent me a replacement which worked perfectly - however when I put it in my wallet it had the same problem. The original Nexus also worked perfectly out of the wallet. I determined that the problem was the autosleep sensor which is triggered by the magnet in the wallet cover when it is closed. However if the wallet cover is opened and folded flat behind the Nexus the magnet is close to the sensor but at the back of the Nexus; since the magnet is still pretty close to the sensor it is triggered when the lower left of the screen is pressed (where the sensor is).
The solution for my wallet was to fold the cover into a triangle using the folds - this also makes the wallet easier to hold.
I still very occasionally get the problem when I move the magnet so I think that the sensor is a bit too sensitive.

You're exactly right!
I noticed just minutes ago the screen turning off immediately after I put down the device. It did this several times w/o a "problem", so I became worried and looked for the answer to this problem online. When I saw your post and read the word "magnet" a little light went on in my head -- I was placing the device on the loudspeaker! Apparently, the sensor in the back was picking the magnetism from within the loudspeaker enclosure (i.e. from the tweeter driver magnet)
Phew! First screen glass going loose, now this with screen going off -- I was getting real worried these Nexuses were cursed

Heh same thing started happening to me, thought the onboard graphics was faulty until I found this thread. Turns out it was the magnet on my case causing it, and getting a bit worn in that it's touching the back of my nexus now!

Same happens to me, I'm just about to exchange it, not sure if i should anymore.

Same happens to me this evening for the first time in 3 days

Happened when I got a new case, I just fold it so its not close to the sensor. I will exchanged my first nexus because of dead pixels and my new one does the same thing. I'm using the Hip street rotating case.

Nexus 7 Screen separation Fix

Here it is! Just got my Nexus 7 but a really bad surprise waited me. As soon as I opened the box, I experienced the "screen separation" issue that a lot of people had. I tried to look on the web for a real permanent fix as Google's supply are not able to bet me an exchange/RMA that would not require to open the back of the device. I had tried to get the screws tighten without success, I also tried to put spacers in between the screws without success also.. :crying:
I read a lot about fixing this issue; one was explaining how to make the CPU/GPU running and generating heat to get the glue to hold the screen and case together. So I was sitting there watching my battery temp going up to 32-35C/90-95F as my meal was in the oven at 190C/375F. Then I got this great idea. I stopped the stress test, put the tablet in power off state and placed it face down on TOP of the hot spot of the oven; in between the two front elements. I put weigh on top of it and waited about 30-40 min. After that period, I started "Stability Test" available on the Play Store to get the battery temp that was around 47C/115F. I stopped the oven and let it sit for the night face down with weigh on top of it to cool it off. Next morning, surprise! The screen was finally glued. I had no screen seperation since then. It's now being my 5th day without any problem.
Conclusion : FIXED !! :laugh:
Let me know if that worked for you as well !

A heat gun would probably be easier and safer, glad it worked though.

Interesting idea, hadn't heard that one before. Of course, different stoves will have different hot spots from the oven, so YMMV. How much weight did you put on top of it? Also, do you happen to have a way of measuring how hot the spot gets?
I'd be interested to see if this is a truly permanent solution or if the adhesive starts to break down again after a few weeks or months.

I placed my hand over and touched it.. If the "hot spot" was couple of degres higher, I wouldn't be able to let my hand sit there.. I was at the limit.. For the weight, I used casino's pot full of change.. 2x 8 pounds..

Good to know. Different people seem to have different thresholds for heat (for instance, I remember as a kid I couldn't keep my hands under the same water my mom used to wash dishes), but the spot on my stove doesn't seem to run as hot as you described, so I'd be willing to try it if I run into this issue on my replacement.
All in all, though, I like this idea a lot. There's always a risk, but I'm sure the devices are stress tested with the CPU running at temps hotter than you could reproduce using this method (short of actually putting it inside the oven). As long as you can hold your hand on the spot without it getting too unbearable, I would think it's pretty safe to try.

I'm interested in this too. What about a very tiny amount of super glue on top of the old adhesive?

regarding heat-guns .... do you think a hairdryer would get hot enough/ too hot etc? I'm keen to try this but dont want to mess it up.
I'm on my 2nd N7 and have screen lift again

shocking discovery- missing screws in nexus 7
Long story short:
1st device from best buy : scar like dead pixels, exchanged for second
2nd device from best buy: loose screen/ seperation
Got 3rd device from staples hoping it is better, noticed screen noticeably yellower, minimal seperation problem.
At my last resort, opened up the 2nd and 3rd device, found 3 screws missing from the right side when faced down(or left when screen is up). While the 3rd device is missing one,
. I am so shocked this is happening....no wonder my screen is so loose.
I m a first timer with android device. Own an iphone . Gotta say jelly bean and even the nexus 7 itself is spectacular. But what is with Asus? Have google picked the wrong partner. Or is it is pure poor quality control. Unbelievable.

Okay, so just to make sure what you people do:
1. Heat up the oven
2. Find the hotspot
3. Switch oven off, wait until hot to touch (that'd be a bit over 60C)
4. Switch unit off
5. Put the unit on the hot spot with about 16 pounds (8 kilos) of pressure on top (really?)
6. Wait until it has cooled down naturally
Am I missing anything? How has the fix held for you so far after a month or more?

Did not work for me.
I heated the device to 80C with a hairdryer, then pressed it with clamps (force equal to about 9kg) for about 7 hours.
Separation came back about 1 hour after I released the clamps without turning the device on.
Too bad, as I have no way to exchange it.
I guess I'll just use the case.

5 minute epoxy (or any glue one's comfortable with) is the way to go. The problem is obvious once the bevel is removed - the glue on the left side on my device had cured without holding the glass. Hard to believe heating and pressing would work at all.

Poll: Which method fixed glass separation?

There are many methods suggested by various members to fix the glass separation issue. Just curious what your experiences are.
AFAIK, we have at least 3 threads on how to fix this issue but no poll yet. I thought an empirical results would benefit the new owners looking for the most effective fix.
Several other fixes failed to include:
1. heat/clamp (similar to super glue method sans gluing)
2. nexus 7 case

There isn't an option for .
I don't have a screen separation problem.

Washer fix, still not 100% but doesn't bug me.

Washer fix was 100% for me. It required 3 washers over 2 screws. Been solid ever since. Looks straight when looking across the glass and no more little bulge on the frame. Very happy.
If I ever have to RMA it for some other reason, I do expect my other one to be fixed. I don't want to manually fix the screen every time there is a problem.

Superglue (special for plasric and glass) did the trick for me... 2weeks perfectly fixed

Does the superglue trick void warranty? In other words, is it detectable at all by Google if I ever send it in and they decide to look?

Simply heating it by watching video, putting a clamp on the side to hold the screen in place, let it stay warm for a few hours, then unplug it, turn it off, and leave it overnight. Screen hasn't raised again the past two days. It's not a screws issue -- the fact that you can push the screen back into place makes that pretty clear. It seems to just be an adhesive problem. I'd recommend giving it a try for sure.

Weighing down the left side of the screen and warming it up. Re-sealed the glue I think

I decided to check as many as I could until I found one without it.. all in all I opened 9, the 9th had no screen lift. So I went with the, "I'll get what I paid for method." It took a few days and 4 stores but I'm happy having a nexus as it should be, with no flickers and no screws loose.

I tried tightening/ loosening the screws and leaving weight on it overnight, neither worked. I ended up exchanging the one that had lift for another one, then that one ended up having dust under the screen so after taking that one back (both C7's) I took the refund, and now have to wait for them to get more stock in. The glue method some are suggesting is just nuts, no way should I have to do that to something brand new out of the box. Honestly might not even bother trying to find another one.

I did the glue fix with 5 minute epoxy. Its now perfect for a week so far. By the way, my Nexus 7 was great except for the lifting screen issue on the left side so I didn't want to exchange it. 5 minutes of my time is all it took and I've been happy.

5 minute epoxy is great stuff! I only have minor screen lift, to the point where I never would have noticed it if people weren't always talking about it. If my screen lift ever gets worse I will be using some epoxy on mine as well, but for now, I'm just going to enjoy my N7

I decided to simply accept a minor amount of screen lift as a mere quirk of the device, and compared it to other issues that matter far more to me--such as the dingy yellow tint and dead pixels. Now that I got a (6th) unit without either of those issues, I'm going to keep it even though there's a bit of screen lift.

As far as I see this, the only true/permanent fix is to re-glue the screen. I've fixed two now with 5-min epoxy and they're perfect.
If "by Super glue" you mean CA (especially thin) I'd highly avoid that if you don't want to make a mess, it's way to aggressive and fast curing.
5-min epoxy gives you plenty of time to wipe off any excess and clamp the screen to the frame.

[Q] Screen won't unlock during phone calls.

Anytime I make a phone call my phone locks. I know phones typically go black when it's at your ear, but when I pull away, it won't wake up/unlock. The only time it unlocks is at the end of the call. I set it up so that the power button will end my calls but that doesn't really fix my problem. If I have to use the dial pad during the call, I can't.
I read that the proximity sensor might be blocked by a phone case. I removed mine and it's still not working. Any idea what it can be?

Do you have a screen protector? If so, remove it and try again.

I am something similar happening, when I remove the phone from my ear after a call I cannot end the call because the phone is locked and I have to unlock it with a pattern before I can end the call or wait for the caller to hang up.
Interestingly I also have exactly the same issue as I had with the LG G3 as well, I take a photo and, if I do not have WiFi, the Nexus 6 turns off, it does it every single time - it's fine if I put it into airplane mode though. As this was the same thing that happened on my LG G3 and no one else is reporting this on Nexus 6, I am assuming it must be an app I am installing ?

I have the same problem, it's really annoying. My phone won't wake when I take it away from my head and it doesn't respond to the power button until the other person hangs up.
Hopefully it'll be fixed with an update.

I am having the same problem. Brand new Nexus 6 that's only a few hours old.

I got rid of my screen protector and it works way better now. Worth a try if you are using one.

Long story short since I already related my post there, I haven't had this problem on lollipop 5.0.1, now after sideloading 5.1, I have this issue. Screen protector is on, but never was issue before. Now all the sudden it's an issue. I feel like it has to be a software issue. Guess i'll need to test few more times before taking off or cutting screen protector; will update with more news.

Same issue for me. Never had this issue before the update to 5.1. Wonder if I can go back. I have had the phone since early December.
A little testing. Holding the phone away from my face, the screen immediately blanks when a phone number is dialed. Tried rebooting - no help. May try a factory reset.

As a brief work around - you can go settings - accessibility - select power button ends call. Works for me till I decide what to do. I have a screen protector on and yep it's covering the prox sensors. Once removed it works as normal. Need to find a new protector that does not cover.

A2CKilla. Much thanks. I did read, but it was odd it went from 0% to 100% failure rate after the sw update. I work embedded sw and that is very uncommon for a sensor. I wanted to make sure since I just flashed this morning.
I cut down the protector and everything is good.

Definitely is the screen protector screwing with the senors like everyone is saying and you guys are simply ignoring. I had the same issues off and on back on 5.0, 5.0.1 and on 5.1, but on 5.1 it was permanent. As soon as I took the protector off, everything worked as normal.

*****UPDATE*****
Well A2CKilla, we all just wanted to avoid the inevitable and hope it was a software issue we could just "fix" instead of being a $10, god forbid more, for a screen protector. Always try the more simpler things first than to destroy others first (which I accidentally did btw with my amazing tempered glass, now I must find one that doesn't block the sensor. In my professional opinion, if a sensor worked while having a protector over it on a previous android version, why in the actual F*** would it not work on the newer ones, UNLESS they increased/decreased sensitivity on the code somehow? Well that was my first line of thought anyway.
Also tl;dr PROBLEM WAS INDEED SOLVED BY TAKING OFF TEMPERED GLASS (that previously wasn't an issue at all) AND NOW ALL IS NORMAL.
ps. sensor is literally right next to the top speaker grill on the left side. Best to find a protector that doesn't block that.

I really wasn't trying to sound rude at all with what I said, but seriously, there's many a thread about this issue way before 5.1 even came out, and every single time the screen protector was brought up to be the issue, but everyone had to try to find 101 ways for it to not be that, granted my tempered glass protector was less than $5 and I've already found one with the proper cut out for again, less than $5 so I was fine with discarding it, but for so many people to really try and deny something that was the clearly the problem really was sad for a moment. Once again, not trying to sound rude at all but this wasn't the first rodeo about this issue

Wow I never had an issue on 5.0 or 5.0.1 with my tempered glass screen protector. After spending all day thinking it was a software bug and reverting back and trying multiple sources for stock images and ota for 5.1 I decided to remove the screen protector and it worked! Cant believe how 5.1 made the proximity sensor sooo sensitive.

Hey can you link me where you bought it with proper cut outs for sensors? And to clarify its tempered glass I'm after. Thanks

This is not acceptable behavior for the device. Mine worked fine, 0 issues before update. Now ambient display is broken and in call the screen goes black. This should be a non issue. My other phone has the sensor covered with a glass protector and it's not a problem at all. This can be fixed, since it was working before. Taking off the protector is not an option for me since I don't have a replacement right now, and should only be a temporary fix at most.

so it's not acceptable for a device to not work properly with something it was never designed nor intended to have? and maybe you were a lucky one because there were many people having this issue and I also stated that it was an off and on issue for me until it was permanent after the 5.1 update. Also, that's another phone, not the nexus, every phone has different settings for their sensors. And technically speaking it is an option for you to take it off, are you forgetting that your screen is gorilla glass???, a type of glass they developed to be scratch resistant, outside of some dust here and there, I've notice no difference having taken mine off until the new one gets here
