The nandroid backup (backup from CWM), creates a backup of the ROM + all you data. Therefore once you flash a new ROM, recovering from CWM will cause the new flashed ROM to be reverted back to ROM you had backed up.
If I understand correctly you want to flash a new ROM and keep the apps you have on the original ROM.
If that is what you want to do, then you need a backup application to backup your apps, then restore them to the new ROM.
I suggest you try Titanium Backup, here's the free version (however it needs root access):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup&hl=en
-You need to have your SXL rooted first
-Install Titanium Backup on your current ROM
-Backup your apps and data to your SD card using TBackup
-Flash the custom ROM
-Install TBackup on the new ROM
-Restore your apps+data from TBackup
Enjoy!

you should not restore one roms data to another one as it will also restore system data too which can cause abnormal issues like wifi/Bluetooth not working or else
you need to set system data manually and you can restore user data with titanium backup
use Titanium Backup to backup apps..when you flash a new rom, just restore apps from Titanium Backup....thats it.......just apps, not apps and data.
if you want to backup rom, then you go with CWM
How can I make a complete backup from my installed apps and settings?
I would like to install a new ROM and I do not want to lose my settings.
Go to CWM and backup menu there backup..
You can restore it latter after experimenting other roms if u want to, directly from CWM, same backup menu and restore..
Here the full system and apps and all data is backed up to sd-card.
Here you want require to flash the rom just restore.. and ya if you hav unlocked bootloader and use rom with custom kernel then flash the kernel and then restore..
These is a full rom backup..
Or get titanium backup from playstore..
Here you need to flash the rom and then restore from the app, after instaling the app..
These backup can be restored on any rom from the app..
Hi there,
I recently rooted and flashed a custom ROM onto my Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini. I'm very new to this thing and find everything quite overwhelming, but I want to learn.
I flashed this ROM - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2119219 (the v6 No Wipe version because I was petrified about losing my data if I factory reset), but the phone is now extremely laggy and buggy, so I want to go back to the stock ROM (so I can do a nandroid backup) and then try a different custom ROM like Dmod.
So, my question is, do I have to factory reset my phone to go back to stock? Or can I just flash this file (http://hotfile.com/dl/189271016/833...T-I8190N-BTU-I8190NXXALL6-1356151513.zip.html) using the CWN recovery menu without wiping? I'm asking because my phone keeps giving me an error everytime I try to backup using the CWM Recovery menu.
Thanks and if you need me to explain something in further detail, let me know.

That firmware is a zipped odin-file. Can't be flashed in CWM.
Make a cwm nandroid backup of your "/data" to your external sd (that's your installed apps)
You can also backup your apps and appdata using titanium backup or similar, for later restore.
Just remember to never backup/restore systemapps.
Backup internal sd to computer just to be sure, if you in any situation have to make a factory reset. Make sure any kind of backup is on your external sd before you make factory reset, or it will be lost forever

CWM has NO choice to backup/restore only parts of the device. Only a full backup is possible.
This is only in TWRP. Pity! I only use CWM because TWRP makes corrupted backups (three times) for me.
Or is it possible to pick out only DATA from the backup? And what is happen with the dalvik cache, which
consists of the byte-code for all installed apps, optimized for the ROM which created it?
"advanced restore and restore only /data". Is this the way in CWM that you mean @benz?
JackoMJ
Yes that's exactly what I meant, "advanced restore and restore only /data"
You don't have to worry about cache and dalvik because it's automatically created on the initial start.
thx for the information Benz (usefull in the future perhaps),
but i´ve decided to use Titanium Backup.

1. Your stock rom, and it's data
2. You can flash another rom. But, if you are going to restore your backups. It will be do nothing, because your phones going back to previous rom, data. Do a normal flash rom, and then you can do a backup, if you want.

Hi Devs.
I am using Cocore kernal and my mobile is rooted. I have cwm 6. I took backup of my stock rom and after that i moved to Cm11. I installed few apps on cm11 after that i took backup of cm11 also. After That I have installed PACROM and i have backup of that rom also.
Now I have Nandroid backup of all three ROMs( STOCK, CM and PAC)
Then i have decided to restore my stock ROM . Everything went well but when it started it start without any user data and start in start up wizard with message goole.process fail and i got stuck in setting wizard.
After that i tried to restore CM and This time CM start as new rom without gapps and user data but works very fine.
Finally I try to restore pac and it comes out with same result as CM.
Now whenever i restore my backup it restore only rom but no user data or apps.
After that i tried many solution.
I have found one problem in recovery that failed to mount preload
I have fixed the permission but unable to mount preload .
I found one wierd solution to restore stock with data. : First i restore it in CWM after that i reboot my device in download mode and i flash stock JB via odin on my device and suddenly my stock rom start working with all user data
But this solution works with only stock backup and i don't want to restore stock every time via odin.
So please help me to solve this problem.

When you want to go back from CM 11 and 10.2 to previous version of Android you must either to format Prelaod parition, or flash stock JB. On those two versions developers are using that partition as SWAP, so it is has differend format and can't be used for files that should be there on previous versions.
Solution 1: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2612540
Solution 2: What you did, flash stock JB from Odin.
