I have just decided to Flash a Rom. Have had my Cappy for almost 2 yrs and finally pulled the trigger.
When I upgraded to GB through Samsung and mini-Kies- my problems began with freezing and battery pulls to reset. Pulled the trigger on a 2.2 somehow back to stock, then got 2.3.5 again. I decided to try the Corn Kernel and Geeves helpful guide.
Well I wanted something different and tried DOCS Master ICS 4.0.4 v12. I love it except the fact Ihave no signal- no bars, no data, no phone. I look at it 5 minutes later and I have signal. Most times- though no bars.
I live in the Northeast- Central Mass to be exact. Is this why I would have to figure out a different modem? Never had to worry about this before.
Thx
Chris

I'm in MA running Nostalgia ICS ROM. So far the best performance for me is achieved with UGKG3 modem
To get it go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1227717 and then to the website where ICS modems are:
http://soggycashew.weebly.com/cm7miui--ics-modems.html
Grab radio-cm7-ics-captivate-ugkg3-signed.zip
I have tried a few others, but UGKG3 works best for me.
Hope this helps.

I am at work now(10 miles north west of Boston)- signal seems fine here. I'll take anoth few looks during commute and when I get home- maybe sumpin wuz up...

Which ROM is the best for the Captivate?
I have been running Assonance 5.2 since I rooted, but have recently been looking for something more. I have heard good things about Paragon and di11is ROM. I need full GPS functionality so ROMs without it are a dealbreaker.
Let the discussion begin.
I personally like darky's a lot. The most recent versions have added easier support for the captivate but may still need some work to get working. I love it though.

Andromeda seems to be the overall top at the moment. I know we're supposed to say "its preference" but no bull**** its the most stable rom and the quickest.

I'm aware of the FAQ, I've flashed ROMs, and unbricked my phone. Just trying to stimulate a lively discussion.

Fixed that for you, seriously just try them all based on what theme you like and what kernel features you need.
They all are good, some are better, all have bugs. Anyone who says other wise is lying to themselves
I really like serendipity. fast, stable, awesome.
ive tried cezars, cognition, and firefly out of those i liked cognition out of the box but loved firefly after some tweaks i think if u want stable go with one of the rogers 2.2 based roms

99% of the time no one starts a flame war except the people flaming the person who started the 'flame war'. Honestly though it is preference (although some ROMs are better then others stability wise)

I've found the same, big fan of Firefly right now, I used the firebird kernal with ADW launcher. It's about the best my phone has ever run.
The reality is that they all work a bit different on different phones, your going to have to experiment with a few to find the one that makes your phone happy. I understand how this seems strange, they should all be identical ( it's the same hardware right? ) but it's not so, for some reason they behave differently.
Good luck finding the combo for yours.
Check my signature. Results speak!
I've been using Darky's on my Captivate, and it's been running amazing so far.
How come no one mentioned Pheonix rising?! I've tried cognition but this seems better stable and fast. And With the GO launcher my life has really changed.

Andromeda is really great. Can't say enough about it. turned my cappy into what I thought it would be when I bought it.
Yeah I'm a big Andromeda fan too. I also like Perception with the latest Speedmod kernel. I was running Paragon RC3 and got amazing battery life from it but overall it was kind of choppy and not as smooth as Andro and Perception/Speedmod. If I was going on a long trip I would flash Paragon and pop in my 3000mA battery. But as my daily driver I like Perception and Andromeda.
Keep coming back to Cognition 3.02. Just flashed Firebird Kernel because I wanted to enable HSUPA and Voodoo Sound. Went though I9000 JL3, JK4, and JK3 modems. In call volume on most I9000 modems are pretty low, but that can be fixed. However, I was having GPS problems with every modem I flashed, BUT, I came across the KP1 modem and it's working very well. Good call volume without tweaks, GPS lock in 10 to 15 seconds (within 10 to 15 meters accuracy), and solid upload/download (~1500 - 1700 kbps download / ~12000 kbps upload)
My phone really doesn't seem to like I9000 ROMS, though, and I've tried mostly all of them. Serendipity seemed to run the smoothest, but I didn't get good GPS performance so I went back to Cog 3.02, but that was before I came across the KP1 modem. I'll probably give Serendipity another try with the KP1 modem before too long.
Just like everyone says, it's all up to personal preference. I've had my Captivate for six weeks or so, and I'm starting to find out that the ROMs offered by the great developers who post on XDA are fantastic in and of themselves, but they can also be great starting points for you to find out what works on your personal device. Different kernels which support certain lagfixes, video and sound enhancements, and different modems are available so that each individual can find out what combination of ROM/Kernel/Modem works for them.
I haven't had my Captivate very long but I've flashed Cognition, Andromeda, and Serendipity already. The best so far for me in speed stability and appearance has been Serendipity. Just my opinion as everyones Captivate is different.
Serendipity bar none!!!
>>In call volume on most I9000 modems are pretty low, but that can be fixed.
How? By switching to a different modem, or what?
It would be nice if there were a chart that listed modems and kernals, showing the features in each and their compatibility with each other.

good to know, i am using that rom too. you can try speedmod kernel also, for the modem, it needs to be i9000 compatible.
I have success with both firebird kernal and speedmod kernel with the kp1 modem and the jk4 modem. You could tries these modems and see if they work for you. Not every modem will work the same for every phone in any location. You will just have to keep trying them out until you find one that works for you
well about every modem ive tried. aka or rom. works. just the poor call quality or slow network speeds. i tried speedmod last night. no go on ji6. whats wierd is on cognition or the leaked 2.2 froyo they work perfect on ji6. no matter the kernel. which i tried speed mod. glitterballs .4. so ill go out and find an i9000 kernel.
I am running dill's 6.0 with kp1 modem, 2 days now heavy phone use talking, texting, browsing and downloading. Absolutely no connection issues with kp1 at all so far. No voice quality issues either.

hi everyone. I have a captivate. live in america. Well i have had slow network speeds with jk4 jk3. jl1 jl2 plus poor call quality on the other end. ect. but the stock jh7. and the froyo leaked ji6 modems kick ass where im at. it even relialably plays youtube while on on the edge network.
Ive come down to di11is roms are the fastest. smoothest and the BEST gps. no bugs. has any one tried that modem on those roms? ie 6.0 . well i use that modem on some other roms and i know you need a matching kernel. so i flashed kernel then modem. still boot loops. anyone found a combo that works? is there a voodoo sound/lagfix kernel that works with this rom/modem. on cognition 3.04 i used .v4 gb kernel/ji6. and worked great. just have much love for di11is roms

If you read around, the pattern for modems is location based. It seems some modems work better in areas that other modems bomb out. I am going to take a chance and say you are in Kentucky if I read your user name correctly. It is helpful to others when talking about the modem that works best for you to be a little more specific then "I live in America". America can mean many different countries. (unfortunately in todays world climate it really only means one place)
Sorry just a pet peeve of mine.
For me in central florida jl2 has been the best. I will test ji6 to see how it goes for me. Hopefully it will become a preferred modem.
Again I am not trying to be a troll, sorry if it sounds like it.

I don't understand that at all..... the only real difference is if the area covered is 850/1900 or 1900 only..... otherwise how can there be a difference?

I do not disagree with what you say. But reading around there are very similar findings in specific areas. I will look for the threads in the morning. Nyquil kicking in.
im auctually from indiana. sorry for putting up america. At first this modem stuff didnt make sense. How 5 different modems will have 5 bars but each one has different results. would be nice if it was like a pc. windows or linux or mac. where if the drivers installed they just work. Its just such a deal breaker when i get to work and the net is just slow even with 5 bars. (jl1 jl2. jk3 jk4) but with ji6 it works great. and speed test are wayy higher. am now checking out deviant roms. found i9000 with voodoo and ji6. hmm might be able to get di11is working with ji6 here in a minute!
well tried firebird 2.0. tried few other kernals no luck. i flashed kernal first. then modem. no luck. firebird says works will all modems. ive tried. both 959 vibrant ji6 and ucji6 cappy modem. same result. sends it to boot loop. its something easy. is it because its a i9000 based rom? cog 3.04 it works with all those kernals ive tried on dillis

Just start downloading them and trying them, giving them about 2 days before you decide if you like it. Several factors to consider are call quality, signal strength, battery life, and GPS reception. Since your using ICS roms, you must use the modems packaged as CM7/MIUI. You try using something else and it won't flash.
Look >>HERE<< for all the modems you would ever want to try. (FWIW, I like BVJWW2)
Like mrhaley said, there are a variety of things that affect it. JK4 worked great for me when I was in Florida, so I would start there. JW2 is nice also, but it seems like people can't hear me as well with it.

JK4 FTW! I've stayed with it since Eclair and it still works great now I'm on THS ICS. Great starting point to try out.

Hello guys, a few days back I flashed teamhacksung's CM9 ALPHA for Captivate (BUILD 17) on my wife's phone, but she has told me that her apps are not syncing outside of a wifi connection.
I'm thinking it might be something related to the modem.
So I'm looking for any advice on which moden should I load, considering we live in Venezuela? Any tips?
Regards.

Someone listed the "UGKC1" modem in use in Panama. You might consider UGJL2 or UGKG3 also, near by. Search "soggy cashew captivate modem" and check the map. Update your own listing if you find something that works.

Thanks for the info guys, had to flash elite v. 10.1 rom, this was the only rom that would enable data service.
Tried:
AOKP-captivatemtd-build-35
F1-galaxynexus-galaxys-20120502-beta2
Nostalgia-b31-v5.4
Team ICSSGS
CM9-20120510-nightly
CNA-1.5.5
Dark Knight v5.5
Elite v.10.1 was the only rom that connected data service.
The good things is that my wife likes it as is right now, which makes it easy on me. Hehehe.

Allegedly, the JW4 modem ICS to work well. Tested themselves I don't have that but yet ^^
thanks, tried jw4 and jvu, these were fine on GB but not on ics, so it must be something else, just need to find out what

try JVT modem from the modem thread in here somewhere. it has good signal and else on ICS. Im in ireland and have no problem with reception or gps. hope it will work well in uk.
cheers mate, tried jvt (and a few more from perkas stash) wiped cache/dalvik, still dodgy grrrrrrr,
was great on GB, 5-15m, no drops, as soon as i flashed ics, its 10-40m with dropouts, was the same on cm9 and slim, annoying as i use navigation a lot, thx for reply
oh, i do get a decent fix when stationary, then it loses the plot a bit when i start driving

Been looking around other forums, it appears that ics does provide a dodgy GPS signal for many phones. Thats that then :'(

Noticed that, too. On any ICS ROM I tried GPS signal is very jumpy, fixes take ages and the refresh rate of the GPS signal is every 100-300 meters.
Flashed Darky ROM 9.5 to see if the battery runtime is indeed as good as everyone states (in my opinion better then GB but equal to ICS) and experienced fabulous GPS performance, fixes in 5-10 seconds and constant GPS signal. However there might also be GB ROMs that are equally performant.
Hi FOlks-
Have had my Captivate since 10/1/10- and its my third on same contract. Once I updated this last one to GB(stock) thats where my problems began with going to sleep andtouchpad unresponsive.
I then read up what I could and finally decided to roll up sleeves. I rooted and had on the Corn Kernel- and was underwhelmed. I then figured out how to load DOC's Master ICS v12, and while I have throroughly enjoyed it- I am having signal issues, especially in my home- that I wasn't having before. I've noticed that battery life- even after making the changes per Vibranturk- I am lucky to get 2.5 days on light use.
I have been noticing that on my Cell Standby heading- if I look at it- it tells me 10% of the time I have had no signal. I am sure this is killing battery while pinging.
Tonight I flashed Modems- first KF1, with a slight increase on my strength meter, and then KB3- with no appreciable change. I then hit the keys *#*#4636#*#* to enter service mode. I am assuming this is where I would get my signal strength numbers???? Inside my house I am getting -103 to -107. Once I step outisde- I increase 2 bars, and my strength goes to -95 or -93.
Am I stuck, or should I just try flashing back to stock GB, getting a baseline and starting all over again???
Thank you
Chris

I did see a reference to wiping when flashing a modem. Not to sound too much like a newb(I guess I am)-I know to wipe dalvik, etc when flashng a rom- I need to do same on a modem??
Thanks again-

Tried a number of modems to no avail. Today at home I was at 20% time without a signal. I am gonna try reflashing, and if that doesn't work- I will go from DOC's Master back to a GB Rom(thinking Legend 5). If nothing else- I may get comfortable with flashing!!!
