Hi FOlks-
Have had my Captivate since 10/1/10- and its my third on same contract. Once I updated this last one to GB(stock) thats where my problems began with going to sleep andtouchpad unresponsive.
I then read up what I could and finally decided to roll up sleeves. I rooted and had on the Corn Kernel- and was underwhelmed. I then figured out how to load DOC's Master ICS v12, and while I have throroughly enjoyed it- I am having signal issues, especially in my home- that I wasn't having before. I've noticed that battery life- even after making the changes per Vibranturk- I am lucky to get 2.5 days on light use.
I have been noticing that on my Cell Standby heading- if I look at it- it tells me 10% of the time I have had no signal. I am sure this is killing battery while pinging.
Tonight I flashed Modems- first KF1, with a slight increase on my strength meter, and then KB3- with no appreciable change. I then hit the keys *#*#4636#*#* to enter service mode. I am assuming this is where I would get my signal strength numbers???? Inside my house I am getting -103 to -107. Once I step outisde- I increase 2 bars, and my strength goes to -95 or -93.
Am I stuck, or should I just try flashing back to stock GB, getting a baseline and starting all over again???
Thank you
Chris

Since ur r running ICS... U need to be flashing these modems --- http://soggycashew.weebly.com/cm7miui--ics-modems.html .
U will just have to keep trying til u find what works best for you. I'm currently running ugkc1 and it works very well in my area (central Arkansas).

Awesome!!! Thank you. I was doing some searching in the DEV section looking at titles for MODEM. I didn't see this link before. I did run across the one saying to flash KF1 before going to KB3. Tried them both with no luck.
I did see a reference to wiping when flashing a modem. Not to sound too much like a newb(I guess I am)-I know to wipe dalvik, etc when flashng a rom- I need to do same on a modem??
Thanks again-

I have never wiped anything when flashing a modem.
2.5 days? I've never had this phone last that long before, even with no use.

Believe it or not on Eclair I was up to 4 days with not much use. This was with shutting off at night, and then I realized my Sync was turned off as well. Up till recently though I was getting 3 Sixteen hours day with juice to spare.

Tried a number of modems to no avail. Today at home I was at 20% time without a signal. I am gonna try reflashing, and if that doesn't work- I will go from DOC's Master back to a GB Rom(thinking Legend 5). If nothing else- I may get comfortable with flashing!!!

I find that no matter what ROM I use, I have something that is a problem.
The most success I have had is with Serindipity. But, with that, and other 2.2.1 I9000 ROMs I have tried, after 2-3 weeks, I have the auto rotate fail. Nothing will fix it other than a flash back to stock 2.1, and then reflash of the 2.2.1 ROM. Not even a factory reset on the 2.2.1 ROM will work.
So, now I am trying UCKB1 ROM (stock 2.2 Froyo for Captivate), specifically Cognition. This one is pretty successful, except...modems are few, and I have constant problems with WiFi enabling with Tasker.
Those are the two issues that seem to haunt my phone.
What is your experience? Of course, if you don't use Tasker, maybe the WiFi issue won't be a problem for you.
I suppose the auto rotate could be a sensor trying to go out on my phone...but, EVERY time I do the reinstall of 2.1 it fixes it. So I have cannot replace the phone, and given that it always starts working, I'm not convinced it is a hardware issue.
And for those on 2.2.1, what I've seen generally is that most people putting these ROMS on are flashing addicts (I'm not saying that is a bad thing ), but I prefer to use the phone and not constantly flash. Too much other config to set up after flashing.
Oh, by the way, one fault I have is way too many apps installed. I delete some and then next thing you know I've installed others. Pretty much requires that I use an OC kernel, and I like to use UV for battery performance. Interestingly, I have been quite successful at 1400, and 1.5%/hour drain at idle, with WiFi, GPS, and BT on.

I've been on a phoenix 4.5 for a while, and I'm pretty happy with it right now. I should probly update it though.
To be honest... every single ROM (minus one or two random tries) in this forum are worth keeping, imo.
They all have their pros and cons, but they're all well made.
I never make it more than like 3 weeks (and that was on CM7 lol) without flashing because I'm an addict, but there are a lot of stable ROM's
A few I really like:
Phoenix
Serendipity
Continuum
There are many others, but you get the idea!
Regards
Smith
longest i was on Darky's 8.0..for 2 months...then CM7 for 3 weeks....lol...but almost all 2.2.1 roms are stable to stick on one for long time..
erm, the best 2.2 one ive been on is serendipity . It simply does everything...
When i decided to move onto 2.3, i used MIUI (Still using it)
Yes, my expectations are that all the roms are 'great'. But, as noted, I have not had ANY that don't end up with problems, as outlined above. Other problems, depending on which ROM, and kernel combination, is Blue Tooth voice dialing. Again, I'm looking for someone using them successfully long term.
I'm hearing people like sames ones I have tried, plus one or two.
What is strange is the issues I outlined above that I continue to have. May be related to my hardware...don't know. Will be interesting to see if anyone posts that indicates having same problems, and even better, having conquered them either with specific ROM or a fix.
Thanks. I'll continue to watch this thread, and will likely try a different ROM.
Over 6 weeks on Andromeda and no issues. Smoothest, most stable ROM available for the Cappy IMHO.

Yes, I believe so. It indicated no sensor or something. But it has not been around 3 weeks since moving to 2.2, and it hasn't happened again. If it does, I will be sure to do that again.
If this continues to work w/o Auto Rotate problems, I may end up putting 2.2.1 back on, and see what happens.
I tried everything with the same reservations--the odd bug and amateur hour theming.
Until Andromeda. No bugs ; stock UI. Haven't flashed anything in 2 months.
No phone are created equal(hardware limitations) and may react differently with different types of rom or kernel but so far my phone likes paragon rc6 even with 1400mhz kernel and faster mount in ext4 my phone is pretty stable. With other rom with the same clock speed it is not as fast and stable as paragon. So flash any rom out there until your phone meet its match.

I've been on dillis rom for about 3 months straight. I tried cm6 a while ago and I think I tried cognition the first time I flashed but dillis is just so simple, stripped and speedy. awesome GPS too(huge for me) and batt life exceeds a day(even more huge). however, themes and fluff arent my thing. I don't think I'm the only dilli fan with this opinion.

Good feedback everybody. I may experiment with one, or more, of the ROMS discussed here.
At the moment, I not sure how long I've been on my current ROM (Cognition 4.2.1), but at the moment, my issues may be working out.
The WiFi issue is improved since doing a clear of cache and Dalvik cache. We'll see how that goes.
The Auto Rotate, so far, has not messed up.
The one nagging thing at the moment is my notification volume constantly changes back to very low. Not sure what is causing that.
I've seen a couple votes for Andromeda. I was looking in that thread a few days ago, and even the change log (didn't read top to bottom extensively) and I could not find what it is based on; what kernel it is using; or modem. Of course kernel and modem would be changeable, but I would like to know what base it is on.
Again, my goal is to find something working well; performing well. Its interesting that after starting this thread, my 'issues' seem close to resolved based on what I'm running. Want to give it more time.

You are right. Seems nobody has any standards on where to put that information. Seems to me the OP should contain the basic info on what it is built on. Or the release notes linked from the OP.

yeah, it would suck to have to read a QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS thread when you have a QUESTION about the rom that needs ANSWERED

I agree with you. I do. I don't want to flame or start a war on it either.
I commented that I did not read comprehensively; and I commented in my reply that he was right about that I should have read the Q&A. My only point was I did read what I considered the logical places: the OP; and the release notes, particularly the earlier part of the release notes, whre typically what the ROM is made up if would be stored.
Does that not make some sense?
That's all I was getting at. While I have read a thread front to back, I only do so if I have decided I do want to use the ROM. Sometimes a little logic in placement of information in documentation makes the documentation so much better.
Now, I will go read, and see if I want to try Andromeda. I recall the Armani ROM coming out, and something rings a bell about that which made me stay away, but I have no idea now what that was. That was very early in my efforts to install ROMS.

your hesitation with armani was likely a couple of us bricking our phones with the bootloader that shipped with the original armani rom. the boot loaders have been removed from the CWM flashable and do not cause bricks
first of all I installed MIUI rom a week ago ..
it took me 2 hours to just do that..
then I figured out that people are flashing thing called "kernel' which apparently makes phone faster. So i flashed glitch kernel
then I noticed people talking about modem..
what does this modem do and what is the best modem for miui rom?
thanks in advance
I am a super newbie as well.
But I think people change their modem because sometimes the phone signal (3G/2G or whatever) is just too lower than the usual.
It seems to be different phone to phone. But if your phone signal seems normal, you don't need to anything (I guess )

Modems are the software that establishs and controls your phone, data and gps signal. Some modems work better in certain regions or with certain carriers. Some may be best with gps, or shine at data transmission. Also if your phone supports the 850 band you will need a modem that supports that. Getting the best signal you can is important because the sgs can burn a lot of battery life seeking and finding a solid connection.
Modems are painless and quick to flash via recovery, so it never hurts to try a few out to find the best for you and your usage.

Lol, someone else answer my question please?
Look, those releases were leaked in a very rapid fire manner.i'm talking all 3 for October on less than a week. It is hard to keep up with what was changed from one to another. Seeing as they are leaks, there not a change log to go by. It's more trial and error from the people using them.
As for trolling, I don't understand how you think that. I told you the biggest difference in them. What I told you is everything I know concerning them. I would imagine that kj3 has fewer bugs, as it is newer. I think it may also be 2.3.5.

Not sure if I can help much, but I will say (in me opinion) the "KI" and "KJ" roms are not very impressive, KH3 seems to work pretty well, in particular Fasty II 1.9 (KH3 based) has worked the best on the two captivates I have, stable and among the best in battery life. May want to search and try it out, just search Fasty II, and grab version 1.9. Newer is not necessarily better.

And I disagree with that. KJ3 is fast and very good with battery even at "stock"
My sister has the stock-leak release of KJ3 on her phone and she only went down to 72% battery after 12 hours of the phone being off the charger. She does a lot of texting. (I checked it last night)
I get slightly worse battery but thats cause I like checking out the forums constantly

Thanks

The Odin packages from IlluminatedOne are "back to stock" packages so yes it will remove all your apps and system data but it will not erase your internal and external SD cards.
I'm running KJ3 with the Samurai kernel (OC'd to 1.25). It's been pretty good, but I think I may go to KH3 Pinnacle. KJ3 has a problem with the Gallery (black screen issue) and maybe the Browser FC'ing. Also, KJ3 uses more memory than KJ3. Pinnacle is a good build.

before going to Pinnacle, u shud give a try to Illuminatedone...its based on Kj3 and looks very solid...Ofcourse painnacle has far more features....but for performance and Battery, I would recommand IlluminatedOne
I did some looking around and came across a thread with a different Gallery3D.apk in it. Copied it over the one on the KJ3 rom and it works fine. Can't find the thread now, but I still have a copy of the file if anyone wants to try.

This is probably an old issue for some but it only recently started happening to me. I'm running SlimICS 4.0.4 on my Captivate (which is an awesome ROM), but lately, I'd say for around a month, the phone will shut off at random. The only way I can get it to boot past the AT&T screen is to plug it in. Any remedies for this or is my phone just on its last legs? I believe I upgraded in August, so I have another year to go yet before I can upgrade and I'm sure it's out of warranty so no returns/exchanges. I've tried a battery calibration tool, since I figured maybe the battery is getting old, but unfortunately that didn't work either.
Try upgrading your kernel, or whole ROM. sounds like a kernel issue. I'd recommend devil for ics.

Similar to how a KP will cause a Linux/Unix system to freeze or reboot? I'm fed up with it, it died mid-text with a 72% battery level... I may try CyanogenMOD since I'm somewhat familiar with it from using a previous version.
I just wanted to follow up on this. I figured since the phone was acting up and everything was backed up to my external SD card I didn't have much to lose by re-flashing it. I tried Doc's Master ICS, which worked briefly and crapped out. I then flashed back to bone stock OEM, stock bootloader, not rooted, etc... and it seemed to be working a little better, but unfortunately the freakin thing did it again numerous times. One ATT support call later and they're sending out a new phone.. I've read up on the random shutdown issue and found that phones under a certain number IMEI have had issues. Here's hoping I don't get another one out of the same batch.

I have just decided to Flash a Rom. Have had my Cappy for almost 2 yrs and finally pulled the trigger.
When I upgraded to GB through Samsung and mini-Kies- my problems began with freezing and battery pulls to reset. Pulled the trigger on a 2.2 somehow back to stock, then got 2.3.5 again. I decided to try the Corn Kernel and Geeves helpful guide.
Well I wanted something different and tried DOCS Master ICS 4.0.4 v12. I love it except the fact Ihave no signal- no bars, no data, no phone. I look at it 5 minutes later and I have signal. Most times- though no bars.
I live in the Northeast- Central Mass to be exact. Is this why I would have to figure out a different modem? Never had to worry about this before.
Thx
