[Q] Shuts off at random - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is probably an old issue for some but it only recently started happening to me. I'm running SlimICS 4.0.4 on my Captivate (which is an awesome ROM), but lately, I'd say for around a month, the phone will shut off at random. The only way I can get it to boot past the AT&T screen is to plug it in. Any remedies for this or is my phone just on its last legs? I believe I upgraded in August, so I have another year to go yet before I can upgrade and I'm sure it's out of warranty so no returns/exchanges. I've tried a battery calibration tool, since I figured maybe the battery is getting old, but unfortunately that didn't work either.

Try upgrading your kernel, or whole ROM. sounds like a kernel issue. I'd recommend devil for ics.

Similar to how a KP will cause a Linux/Unix system to freeze or reboot? I'm fed up with it, it died mid-text with a 72% battery level... I may try CyanogenMOD since I'm somewhat familiar with it from using a previous version.

I just wanted to follow up on this. I figured since the phone was acting up and everything was backed up to my external SD card I didn't have much to lose by re-flashing it. I tried Doc's Master ICS, which worked briefly and crapped out. I then flashed back to bone stock OEM, stock bootloader, not rooted, etc... and it seemed to be working a little better, but unfortunately the freakin thing did it again numerous times. One ATT support call later and they're sending out a new phone.. I've read up on the random shutdown issue and found that phones under a certain number IMEI have had issues. Here's hoping I don't get another one out of the same batch.

Is Galaxy S that bad?

Hi,
I own my galaxy for like 3 weeks now.
The first 2 weeks I was running stock 2.2.1, and had sudden reboots (it even entered into safe mod once I was sleeping and woke up from the sound the phone was doing), force closes.
So I decided and installed deodexed stock rom with speedmod kernel (+lagfix and recommended tweaks), and I feel that my phone is still bad. Angry birds keeps freezing the phone, wifi errors, and I can't run my phone more than 50hrs of uptime, it either will randomly reboot or as it happens today simply turns it self off and wont let me to turn in on (or getting into recovery/download mode).
When this phone was out everybody said its awesome (fast, stable etc) and I waited for prices to get down, now when I finally got it I think that I made a mistake.
Is anybody else frustrated with their phone? Am I doing something wrong? Maybe I should I hope that samsungs gingerbread will fix this? Or
maybe I should try custom rom like Darky or CM7?
Maybe all smartphones sucks and I dont know it because I never had a smartphone before?
Any suggestions?
Thanks a lot!
is it a new or used one mate ??????
i had it for 1 year now its the best
Its a new one of course.
Are you running any custom rom/kernel?
the beauty of SGS and Android is the continuous evolution of the ROMs you install...
I tried many different ROMs , and I am sure you would finally find something that will make you happy with the machine...
for a start, if you are on 2.2.1, get Darky 9.5 and you wont be disappointed.
Your phone is faulty. I had the device on stock froyo for 4 months after buying it and I never had random reboots or wifi issues.
Definitely take it back. I've modded mine so many times and still looks new to me. Had mine since January of this year.

@kauh1970 Thanks for the support!
@Furry Atom, very supportive, however I do start to think that something might be wrong with my phone. On other hand, that might be some application that causes the problems.
@alluliwi, Sorry my English is not that good, what do you mean by "take it back"?
Thanks!

By take it back, he meant to send the phone back for repairs or replacement under warranty to Samsung.
I have no problem with my phone, the only thing i dont like is the free ram available... seem low to me
@timelessfahad Thanks for clearing that up.
@vanvn297 You are running a stock 2.2.1 ROM?
Hi,
I recently updated via kies from stock 2.1 to stock 2.2 HVJP4.
So far I'm not impressed with the stock froyo rom. It's often sluggish and apps, especially email from exchange, crash reguarly.
I have not experienced any problems with wifi or 3g reception however.
I'm still trawling the forum, trying to find all the info and confidence to backup the current rom and try something different, but there's a good chance a stock gingerbread rom will appear before that happens. Hopefully it will address some of these problems. Fingers crossed

Gingerbread works fine
The issue with wifi is pretty known from what I looked (strange thing it never happened on the stock samsung rom only started to happen on deodexed stock with speedmod kernel).
The other thing my original rom was XXJPY and I flashed a deodexed XXJPY so maybe the rom it self is not that good. Gonna try XXJVH/XXJVB deodexed with Demian kernel probably, or will try Darky ROM (also considering CM7).
More replies about your satisfaction with galaxy s will be happily accepted!
Thanks.

in my opinion cm7 has gotten to the point that there is no reason not to install it... its litterally just a single zip now after you have rooted and put cwm on you're phone. the battery is fine, the photo/video is fine (although the samsung camera is way better... panoramic pics ftw) wifi/data is fine/ no need for lagfix/ and its constantly being updated..
edit: actually I think the battery might be better than what I was getting on darky 9.5...
i have been frustrated about my sgs for the first month until i discovered the rom world
usally the stock rom comes bloated with **** and uneeded stuff wich makes the phone slower and many other useless things...(i think)
i am still kind of new to all this and there is so much info do some reading and see how your sgs can be a beast
I too am not feeling the awesomeness of the Galaxy S. My friend got his one when it came out and its hard to believe this is the same phone I thought of as awesome all that time.
I got it new last week, and experiencing quirky behavior that really makes me feel like I'm using a low-mid class phone, and made me completely unenthusiastic/ not inclined with moving to the new phone which is how it should be. I even used my old Motorlla V8 for days after I got the SGS cos I was so unimpressed.
Poor camera, reception, crashes, dropouts, low wi fi signal, stutters, not responding to taps etc, really clunky loose volume button that makes it feel cheap, cheap sounding speaker. And I haven't installed anything on it except quadrant standard, and that crashes sometimes too.
To elborate a little. As far as comparable qualities go, compared to my Motorolla V8, The reception and voice quality is poor. Same network same simcard, I get half the signal, during a call it will sometimes dropout or make that guitar like noise, whereas my V8 never did any of that.
Even when I am next to a wi fi router. It doesn't show full wi-fi signal. Not even at my friends house. It reaches nowhere near as much as any laptop I have had.
I gotta compare these attributes to my friends sgs.
What I have compared so far is the camera, which is much worse on mine, You can see the thread here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081453
The AMOLED screen is also a lot dimmer, and cant display white as pure white but a grey/blue tint. Same settings max brightness.
For example quadrant standard, the spinning DNA like helix test. His background is pure snow white, mine is an off blue/grey dim white.
We also compared speakers, same song. His one has stronger clearer sounds, its quite noticable. All in all I'm wondering If I should replace my phone within the 14 day period.
I already took it back one about the camera issue to where I got it and the guy said its fine, so I would really have to go to Vodaphone or samsung directly to get a new one, which I did, and they said go to a repair centre. Even if they even have stock, it could be the same problems. And I would have to prove all these grey area problems.
Anyway check out my other thread as well and apply the Spectrum or Waveform Wallpaper. I wonder if its glitching here, but I think its most likely normal.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1086257
I will try upload a vid soon.
I am using my sgs now for 2 month, and i have to say its a great phone.
But its only great if you flash it.
In my opinion stock roms by Samsung are not fast enough,
full with useless apps and many tweaks like voodoo sound and gps fixes are missing.
(Tested 2 SGS from different providers, both roms not usable)
Try Darkys rom as also mentioned on page one.
There are many roms, and not all of them are bugfree and stable.
You have to remember the programmers arent payed for their work.
If you still have wifi problems uing darkys rom, your phone is damaged.
You probably need to start afresh.
Reflash a stock rom (ie. JPU which is a fill rom), then update to stock gingerbread. There shouldn't be many bugs at all.

I finally plucked up the courage to do exactly that.
I'm now running JVH with a CF rooted kernel and the phone is now performing close to what I hoped for.
Secondary boot loaders have also been fixed and I'll admit I held my breath during that flash.
Thanks to everyone here for providing the info I needed and making great roms.

Ive had mine since day 1 and its been amazing. No latency issues, wifi/data works perfectly, stable, no fc's(force closes), and the display is perfect. It seems they've gotten fairly "cheap" with the manufacturing of the newer, more recent models being shipped.
Love this phone... BUT, im still going to trade it in for an SGS2

Shutdown issue

So I know first hand about the cappy's notorious shutdown issue. My first ever cap was quickly replaced due to this issue. My second one went about six months without a single shutdown. Then I bricked, sent to samsung for repair. They replaced the pba. When I got the phone back, I started running firefly rom. All of a sudden my phone would turn off and I would have to hold down power button for about 30 seconds to get it to turn on, or have to boot to recovery. I had a brand new cappy that I have had froyo and GB based roms on, and same prob. Replaced the new one, we'll c what happens. Question is, am I just really unlucky or are custom roms causing the prob? Is it possible the fix samsung did causes the prob in my old fixed phone? Old phone is a 1010, first new phone was an 1101, and newest phone is an 1102

I have had a phone of 1008 build...it was working fine until I flashed Onix kernel and it started shutting down randomly...so I got it replaced from ATT...now I have 1007 build and not a single problem what so ever...
I am not sure abt the custom rom (as I had flashed almost all roms on that 1008 build phone with Speedmod kernel with no problem), It might be related to kernel, as I experienced in my case..
Seems simple enough.
Flash Rom.....phone experiences shutdowns.

Thanks for the sarcasm. You guys are really COOL. I just asked because sometimes I go several days without an issue. So to flash stock and check, and flash roms and check is a really drawn out process. Thought if I asked for others insight it might help. That's what this forum is for......right? After flashing and reflashing and voiding my warranty many times over, I've begun to wonder the same thing. I think that some phones are more prone than others to encounter problems when running custom roms due to hardware inconsistencies between individual phones. My phone is a 1006 build and although I've never had a single stability issue with official I897 firmware and I897 source-built roms, when I run I9000-based firmware I notice a few quirks. If I'm running an I9000-based kernel, my rocketflash AC adapter won't charge the phone while it's powered off (ok, I can live with that, just kinda weird). For a while I used existz's Onix kernel and I would always experience sleep deaths and sometimes lock-ups while using the phone when I tried to overclock (even to just 1.2ghz with minimal or no undervolting), and sometimes even when I wasn't overclocking. Now that I'm trying to claw my way onto the 2.3 bandwagon, I'm having trouble finding a rom that doesn't have the charging bug (charges to 100% and then starts draining), though some people say this isn't actually an issue (apparently their hardware behaves differently than mine with the same firmware). So, is it the phone or the roms? Yes.
I had a brand new phone and experienced the shutdowns 2 or 3 times a day. I then flashed firefly and they stopped. I also tried gb and they came back. Now im back on firefly and they stopped again. For me at least the shutdowns are completely rom/kernel dependent. Also I noticed on mosaic the shutdowns happened more frequently on certain kernels.

Thanks for letting me know ur experiences. Just thought it was weird that my phone that worked great for 6 plus months all of a sudden started shutting down after being fixed by samsung. I thought it was a rom, kernel issue. Sucks if firefly is the culprit cuz I like running it on my day to day phone, since I use GB roms on my other phone, and so far call quality sucks with them. Guess I'll try some other kernels with firefly and see how that goes. Thanks again.

[Q] Does your phone suffer from random reboots?

For a long while now an on many different roms I have noticed my phone rebooting at what appears to be random atleast twice a week.
It's never been when in a call and I often only notice it because I see the boot animation on my phone out of the corner of my eye while it was doing nothing but being sat on my desk! Also I know when it has done it because it has switched back to my default network which I am not normally on.
For me I have had it on everything from CM7 to Juwes to docs rom to stock. If this is not normal behaviour I fear that my phone may have a hardware fault
Post your random reboot experiences here!
My experience: rarely with Darky 10.1, I got one today with Juwe 5.1 but I installed this rom two days ago and still making some experiment.
Bye.
always close to stock cfroot only + own changes = never had issues ...
Both my husband and I get them at least twice a week also, we are on stock JVH that we got from O2 through Kies, not rooted or anything. we are thinking of phoning samsung tomorrow, we never had any of these on 2.2, so I think it must be software with us both getting them since 2.3. both our phones are still in guarantee, although if it is software I dont know what they can do
TBH I haven't actually been on a pure stock rom for quite some time. From what I remember I would get the occasional random reboot but probably not quite as often as I have done since turning to custom roms.
Could some fundamental change that many custom roms make cause this?
Or could perhaps a certain rogue app which I have had installed on many different roms be causing this?

Yes this is partly why I decided to create this thread and try to get to the bottom of it. My warranty runs out in 2/3 months and the paranoid side of me fears a hardware issue. I also started on 2.2 and don't think I got quite as many, if any, random reboots then which seems to coincide with your experiences.

I have no idea. I'm starting to think probably not. so far 75% of people to this poll have reboots either daily or weekly. I think it could be a software bug in all gingerbread based roms but i really don't no. Would be interesting to flash back to stock froyo and see if it persists then.
Keep an eye on this thread and hopefully we can get to the bottom of this

I used to get random reboots on stock firmware, because samsung can't write software! Since running cm7 based software (insanity cm) I haven't had one single reboot, the stability is mindblowing and it is super stable, however it is not really for flashing novices, just my humble opinion

Yes I do admit I haven't received the amount of feedback I was hoping for in this thread. And yes I am fully aware that polling on here is far from an accurate way of gathering data exactly for the reason you suggested but still I hoped to learn something about the extent of this phenomenon.
Also when I wrote that quote that you critisied for being inaccurate it was correct at the time. If not a little premature
However please feel free to share your experiences (or lack of) the topic in question.
I voted 'very rarely' - usually when running a buggy app that uses all RAM and CPU.
No reboots by itself so far.
to much, using dark core 2.6 , pilotx rom
Wow I thought I am the only who suffer with this..LOL...My phone is running JVO 2.3.3 and I updated it via Kies...no root no lagfix, quite a virgin Galaxy S..hahaah...
Very rarely, and it was only after this one time I had to swap batteries and didn't allow the phone to fully shutdown which must've caused some corruption. Even though I restored a backup certain things just seemed off and turned out I did had problems with reboots and so after that, most likely being the cause.
Besides that, after putting in a fresh ROM and whatnot, never had issues, not before the incident save once maybe.
I have changed to juwe 5.1 today from his 5.0. Was playing angry birds and left phone down for minute, then soon as screen locked it rebooted itself. Have not tried with other apps yet. Will post back when tried them out

[Q] Is there a rom that will stop the random blackscreen battery pull?

I have had this problem since i have gotten the actual phone. I thought a replacement battery would help but it hasn't. This all happens randomly no matter the charge of my battery and I have read it to be an issue. Do i just need to put my phone back to stock and exchange it? Right now I am running a simple deoxed ota rom with root. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Ive had significantly less blackscreens on cm7. Some nightlies i never had a black screen and others every now and then. I usually just insert cable to get out of it
Miui is the only rom I haven't had a blackscreen on which makes sense considering their update schedule is very slow and they havent updated the 2x rom for some time.
Sent from my Optimus 2X using XDA App
I also get a blackscreen every few days
Any ways around this? Still experiencing the problem :\ Cm nightly 177 & was doing it on another previous nightly too.
BB 405, if that makes a difference.
I had the issue too.
I rooted my device and removed a whole lotta LG Crapware. Had a considerable improvement. Though the BSODs occurred every once in a while.
After that, I flashed HP kernel RC2..
Haven't had any BSOD since then.
So.. I'd suggest getting back to the stock ROM, root it, remove LG Crapware and flash HP RC4 Kernel!
Hope it solves your BSOD issue as well!
Sent from my LG-P990 using Tapatalk
you could also try topogigi's ROM with HP kernel, i don't have any issues with it and i like that it's stock
awh, I don't feel like going back to LG's crapware (even if Topigigi made it good) I like the stock android look and feel.
I think I'll just suck it up and keep the blackscreens if it means I get to keep cm7 I might try topogigi later and see how good it is, but for now my heart lies with cm7.

Hello XDA and Thanks to HashCode! (Droid 3 ICS Kexec Alpha#4)

I wanted to put this in the development forum...but anyway. I have never until this morning messed with Safestrap or loading a custom ROM. Lots of people here do amazing work, good to hear another D3 happy with the progress. Do keep in mind... there's never a 'finished product' it's ALWAYS being updated with better enhancements and whatnot. It's a finished product when it's hardware bricked.
Glad to hear you jumped into the wonderful world of roms though! I hope you enjoy your stay for many years to come.
Major Battery Drain & Gmail Non-Functional
Wish I could post these bugs in the development forum for the Kexec ROM. Should this info be passed along to Hashcode or anyone? If so, what's the best way since I can't respond in the proper thread?
The first day and a half of using this ROM everything was great. All apps worked, the device ran cool and no bugs.
This morning my battery has drained about 80% in an hour. Not sure what caused that.
Other Notes:
Yesterday the Gmail app failed and will no longer work. "Sorry, Gmail has failed...." The screen flashes something so quick I can't read it and returns me back to the Home Screen. I have resorted to using a AquaMail for now. Seems like after the Gmail app failed when I reboot the device now I get some message about Droid is updating. This happens right after the Cynogen screen and before the Home screen loads.
Trivial - System Settings: Battery Usage time is always off.
EDIT: So after going back through the 42 pages on the thread....I am going to reduce the overclock on mine and see if that helps. I also didn't catch that I needed to recalibrate the battery. I will do that after the battery is back up to 100%.
I also can't post in the development forum (yet - one more post after this and I can so that's part of the reason for posting this ) and wanted to add one item to the above:
The car dock USB audio doesn't work. I wouldn't call this a bug so much as a not yet implemented feature. I assume it could be related to the whole audio routing involving missing phone speaker audio with Bluetooth on, etc.
I've been running alpha 4 for nearly a week and it's been surprisingly solid. A few reboots and freezes, but far less than I expected going in.
another user who can't post in development forum.
due to camera issues, shorter battery and random boots i have switched back to CM9 from the Kexec Alpha 4.
hoping to switch back to CM9 Kexec once it get more stable and/or out of alpha
The very bad stability with the stock rom is what lead me to look to alternatives about a year ago and I haven't looked away from Hash ever since! All in all, the instability in Kexec #4 is a little frustrating, but I can deal with it since I know it's not "ready for prime time" like the stock rom claimed to be!
The new jb preview from hash is quite impressive, although not usable at the moment.

Anyone done a factory reset on their JB Droid 3 and been unable to pickup service?
For some reason I'm unable to pickup Verizon as my carrier and establish phone service after a factory reset. The phone just sits here and "Searching for Service"..
I'm thinking I just need to re-flash the latest KEXEC JB build and see if that brings me back to service functionality.
I just did a re-flash, and I'm still sittin on the "Searching for Service" screen.

(Likewise dev-forum impaired!)
To my knowledge, there are no working "jb" builds for the d3. If you are referring to hashcode's cm10 preview, well the answer is in the title, its just a preview. I suggest wiping and flashing non kexec cm9 or aokp till development on the kexec process furthers.

Hash is working on data for Jellybean. Until then nothing will work.
I must have done something weird my first time through as phone and normal services worked under the preview. (Not trying to ***** or start a flame out of it... just stating a reality.)
I'll go take a crack at CM9 then and see what's up. Maybe I can get Service back up under that and then flash to CM10 to restore phone service....

I'll see what I can do. I'll have go figure out how to go completely stock again and start from the ground up. That's where all the magic began for me. And I'll need to find the ROM from 2-3 weeks ago when I first got the guts to flash CM onto my phone. I don't know what in the hell possessed me to do a factory reset other than sheer stupidity. Totally jinxed a good thing.
