For a long while now an on many different roms I have noticed my phone rebooting at what appears to be random atleast twice a week.
It's never been when in a call and I often only notice it because I see the boot animation on my phone out of the corner of my eye while it was doing nothing but being sat on my desk! Also I know when it has done it because it has switched back to my default network which I am not normally on.
For me I have had it on everything from CM7 to Juwes to docs rom to stock. If this is not normal behaviour I fear that my phone may have a hardware fault
Post your random reboot experiences here!
My experience: rarely with Darky 10.1, I got one today with Juwe 5.1 but I installed this rom two days ago and still making some experiment.
Bye.
always close to stock cfroot only + own changes = never had issues ...
Both my husband and I get them at least twice a week also, we are on stock JVH that we got from O2 through Kies, not rooted or anything. we are thinking of phoning samsung tomorrow, we never had any of these on 2.2, so I think it must be software with us both getting them since 2.3. both our phones are still in guarantee, although if it is software I dont know what they can do
TBH I haven't actually been on a pure stock rom for quite some time. From what I remember I would get the occasional random reboot but probably not quite as often as I have done since turning to custom roms.
Could some fundamental change that many custom roms make cause this?
Or could perhaps a certain rogue app which I have had installed on many different roms be causing this?

Yes this is partly why I decided to create this thread and try to get to the bottom of it. My warranty runs out in 2/3 months and the paranoid side of me fears a hardware issue. I also started on 2.2 and don't think I got quite as many, if any, random reboots then which seems to coincide with your experiences.

Yeah our guarantee runs out in about 6 or 7 weeks which is why I thought of phoning them, my phone has been back once because the motherboard or whatever its called had to be replaced. do you think it could be hardware?

I have no idea. I'm starting to think probably not. so far 75% of people to this poll have reboots either daily or weekly. I think it could be a software bug in all gingerbread based roms but i really don't no. Would be interesting to flash back to stock froyo and see if it persists then.
Keep an eye on this thread and hopefully we can get to the bottom of this

question/thread title is "Does your phone suffer from random reboots?" so majorityof people that does not have any reboots/problems will not join to read so they will not vote
also by the thread title in some way youre determining the anserw yet still youve got 15 people voted (thats not authoritative + 350 thread openings...) & 33% of them said NEVER
I used to get random reboots on stock firmware, because samsung can't write software! Since running cm7 based software (insanity cm) I haven't had one single reboot, the stability is mindblowing and it is super stable, however it is not really for flashing novices, just my humble opinion

I'm with 2.3.4 JVP, and usually after an uptime of around 333 hours the phone reboots itself, happened twice...

Yes I do admit I haven't received the amount of feedback I was hoping for in this thread. And yes I am fully aware that polling on here is far from an accurate way of gathering data exactly for the reason you suggested but still I hoped to learn something about the extent of this phenomenon.
Also when I wrote that quote that you critisied for being inaccurate it was correct at the time. If not a little premature
However please feel free to share your experiences (or lack of) the topic in question.
I voted 'very rarely' - usually when running a buggy app that uses all RAM and CPU.
No reboots by itself so far.
to much, using dark core 2.6 , pilotx rom
Wow I thought I am the only who suffer with this..LOL...My phone is running JVO 2.3.3 and I updated it via Kies...no root no lagfix, quite a virgin Galaxy S..hahaah...
Very rarely, and it was only after this one time I had to swap batteries and didn't allow the phone to fully shutdown which must've caused some corruption. Even though I restored a backup certain things just seemed off and turned out I did had problems with reboots and so after that, most likely being the cause.
Besides that, after putting in a fresh ROM and whatnot, never had issues, not before the incident save once maybe.
I have changed to juwe 5.1 today from his 5.0. Was playing angry birds and left phone down for minute, then soon as screen locked it rebooted itself. Have not tried with other apps yet. Will post back when tried them out

Well I thought everything is fixed after flashing to perception version 8 non oc/uv but I was wrong My phone is perfectly fine sitting in my room overnight, no shut down or freezes or anything of that sort. It just tend to shutdown every time I bring it to work and sitting in my coat pocket! I don't have any funky apps installed, just a game and facebook app, and a live wallpaper fish tank. I do not know what is the explanation for this, and it's bugging the living daylights out of me.
Does anyone, especially senior members or developers out there know what is going on with my phone? The phone is brand spanking new, I got it just a week ago from amazon. I called them and they're willing to replace another one free so I might do that. My phone is the newest batch (1010). This problem didn't happen to me before only happened recently after I rooted and flashed to the leaked froyo. Which I found out is a bug so I flashed to perception non oc/uv and still experiencing the same issue.
Anyone with a "clean" rom out there so I can give it another go before returning the phone? Thank you so much once again!

Did you change your UV settings? Try flashing to cognition and see if the problems disappear. I've had my problems when I changed my UV settings, but ever since I moved to xcal's kernel, my phone has been perfectly fine.
Dont try cognition. its pretty slow even with the oc and lagfix. try auxura or this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=847728 they are the best so far. never had these random shut downs on any of these roms except with an uv issue which was completely my fault. i was messing around with it.
@koreancannuck... I have the NON oc/uv version so technically it SHOULD not have this problem.
@goob... i didn't try cognition, i have perception... I believe those two are different from one another...
anyone please give me more inputs... I'm learning this as I go, it's pretty exciting!
I find that no matter what ROM I use, I have something that is a problem.
The most success I have had is with Serindipity. But, with that, and other 2.2.1 I9000 ROMs I have tried, after 2-3 weeks, I have the auto rotate fail. Nothing will fix it other than a flash back to stock 2.1, and then reflash of the 2.2.1 ROM. Not even a factory reset on the 2.2.1 ROM will work.
So, now I am trying UCKB1 ROM (stock 2.2 Froyo for Captivate), specifically Cognition. This one is pretty successful, except...modems are few, and I have constant problems with WiFi enabling with Tasker.
Those are the two issues that seem to haunt my phone.
What is your experience? Of course, if you don't use Tasker, maybe the WiFi issue won't be a problem for you.
I suppose the auto rotate could be a sensor trying to go out on my phone...but, EVERY time I do the reinstall of 2.1 it fixes it. So I have cannot replace the phone, and given that it always starts working, I'm not convinced it is a hardware issue.
And for those on 2.2.1, what I've seen generally is that most people putting these ROMS on are flashing addicts (I'm not saying that is a bad thing ), but I prefer to use the phone and not constantly flash. Too much other config to set up after flashing.
Oh, by the way, one fault I have is way too many apps installed. I delete some and then next thing you know I've installed others. Pretty much requires that I use an OC kernel, and I like to use UV for battery performance. Interestingly, I have been quite successful at 1400, and 1.5%/hour drain at idle, with WiFi, GPS, and BT on.

I've been on a phoenix 4.5 for a while, and I'm pretty happy with it right now. I should probly update it though.
To be honest... every single ROM (minus one or two random tries) in this forum are worth keeping, imo.
They all have their pros and cons, but they're all well made.
I never make it more than like 3 weeks (and that was on CM7 lol) without flashing because I'm an addict, but there are a lot of stable ROM's
A few I really like:
Phoenix
Serendipity
Continuum
There are many others, but you get the idea!
Regards
Smith
longest i was on Darky's 8.0..for 2 months...then CM7 for 3 weeks....lol...but almost all 2.2.1 roms are stable to stick on one for long time..
erm, the best 2.2 one ive been on is serendipity . It simply does everything...
When i decided to move onto 2.3, i used MIUI (Still using it)
Yes, my expectations are that all the roms are 'great'. But, as noted, I have not had ANY that don't end up with problems, as outlined above. Other problems, depending on which ROM, and kernel combination, is Blue Tooth voice dialing. Again, I'm looking for someone using them successfully long term.
I'm hearing people like sames ones I have tried, plus one or two.
What is strange is the issues I outlined above that I continue to have. May be related to my hardware...don't know. Will be interesting to see if anyone posts that indicates having same problems, and even better, having conquered them either with specific ROM or a fix.
Thanks. I'll continue to watch this thread, and will likely try a different ROM.
Over 6 weeks on Andromeda and no issues. Smoothest, most stable ROM available for the Cappy IMHO.

Yes, I believe so. It indicated no sensor or something. But it has not been around 3 weeks since moving to 2.2, and it hasn't happened again. If it does, I will be sure to do that again.
If this continues to work w/o Auto Rotate problems, I may end up putting 2.2.1 back on, and see what happens.
I tried everything with the same reservations--the odd bug and amateur hour theming.
Until Andromeda. No bugs ; stock UI. Haven't flashed anything in 2 months.
No phone are created equal(hardware limitations) and may react differently with different types of rom or kernel but so far my phone likes paragon rc6 even with 1400mhz kernel and faster mount in ext4 my phone is pretty stable. With other rom with the same clock speed it is not as fast and stable as paragon. So flash any rom out there until your phone meet its match.

I've been on dillis rom for about 3 months straight. I tried cm6 a while ago and I think I tried cognition the first time I flashed but dillis is just so simple, stripped and speedy. awesome GPS too(huge for me) and batt life exceeds a day(even more huge). however, themes and fluff arent my thing. I don't think I'm the only dilli fan with this opinion.

Good feedback everybody. I may experiment with one, or more, of the ROMS discussed here.
At the moment, I not sure how long I've been on my current ROM (Cognition 4.2.1), but at the moment, my issues may be working out.
The WiFi issue is improved since doing a clear of cache and Dalvik cache. We'll see how that goes.
The Auto Rotate, so far, has not messed up.
The one nagging thing at the moment is my notification volume constantly changes back to very low. Not sure what is causing that.
I've seen a couple votes for Andromeda. I was looking in that thread a few days ago, and even the change log (didn't read top to bottom extensively) and I could not find what it is based on; what kernel it is using; or modem. Of course kernel and modem would be changeable, but I would like to know what base it is on.
Again, my goal is to find something working well; performing well. Its interesting that after starting this thread, my 'issues' seem close to resolved based on what I'm running. Want to give it more time.

You are right. Seems nobody has any standards on where to put that information. Seems to me the OP should contain the basic info on what it is built on. Or the release notes linked from the OP.
Whatever....

I agree with you. I do. I don't want to flame or start a war on it either.
I commented that I did not read comprehensively; and I commented in my reply that he was right about that I should have read the Q&A. My only point was I did read what I considered the logical places: the OP; and the release notes, particularly the earlier part of the release notes, whre typically what the ROM is made up if would be stored.
Does that not make some sense?
That's all I was getting at. While I have read a thread front to back, I only do so if I have decided I do want to use the ROM. Sometimes a little logic in placement of information in documentation makes the documentation so much better.
Now, I will go read, and see if I want to try Andromeda. I recall the Armani ROM coming out, and something rings a bell about that which made me stay away, but I have no idea now what that was. That was very early in my efforts to install ROMS.

your hesitation with armani was likely a couple of us bricking our phones with the bootloader that shipped with the original armani rom. the boot loaders have been removed from the CWM flashable and do not cause bricks
Hi,
I own my galaxy for like 3 weeks now.
The first 2 weeks I was running stock 2.2.1, and had sudden reboots (it even entered into safe mod once I was sleeping and woke up from the sound the phone was doing), force closes.
So I decided and installed deodexed stock rom with speedmod kernel (+lagfix and recommended tweaks), and I feel that my phone is still bad. Angry birds keeps freezing the phone, wifi errors, and I can't run my phone more than 50hrs of uptime, it either will randomly reboot or as it happens today simply turns it self off and wont let me to turn in on (or getting into recovery/download mode).
When this phone was out everybody said its awesome (fast, stable etc) and I waited for prices to get down, now when I finally got it I think that I made a mistake.
Is anybody else frustrated with their phone? Am I doing something wrong? Maybe I should I hope that samsungs gingerbread will fix this? Or
maybe I should try custom rom like Darky or CM7?
Maybe all smartphones sucks and I dont know it because I never had a smartphone before?
Any suggestions?
Thanks a lot!
is it a new or used one mate ??????
i had it for 1 year now its the best
Its a new one of course.
Are you running any custom rom/kernel?
the beauty of SGS and Android is the continuous evolution of the ROMs you install...
I tried many different ROMs , and I am sure you would finally find something that will make you happy with the machine...
for a start, if you are on 2.2.1, get Darky 9.5 and you wont be disappointed.
Your phone is faulty. I had the device on stock froyo for 4 months after buying it and I never had random reboots or wifi issues.
Definitely take it back. I've modded mine so many times and still looks new to me. Had mine since January of this year.

By take it back, he meant to send the phone back for repairs or replacement under warranty to Samsung.
I have no problem with my phone, the only thing i dont like is the free ram available... seem low to me
@timelessfahad Thanks for clearing that up.
@vanvn297 You are running a stock 2.2.1 ROM?
Hi,
I recently updated via kies from stock 2.1 to stock 2.2 HVJP4.
So far I'm not impressed with the stock froyo rom. It's often sluggish and apps, especially email from exchange, crash reguarly.
I have not experienced any problems with wifi or 3g reception however.
I'm still trawling the forum, trying to find all the info and confidence to backup the current rom and try something different, but there's a good chance a stock gingerbread rom will appear before that happens. Hopefully it will address some of these problems. Fingers crossed

Gingerbread works fine
The issue with wifi is pretty known from what I looked (strange thing it never happened on the stock samsung rom only started to happen on deodexed stock with speedmod kernel).
The other thing my original rom was XXJPY and I flashed a deodexed XXJPY so maybe the rom it self is not that good. Gonna try XXJVH/XXJVB deodexed with Demian kernel probably, or will try Darky ROM (also considering CM7).

in my opinion cm7 has gotten to the point that there is no reason not to install it... its litterally just a single zip now after you have rooted and put cwm on you're phone. the battery is fine, the photo/video is fine (although the samsung camera is way better... panoramic pics ftw) wifi/data is fine/ no need for lagfix/ and its constantly being updated..
edit: actually I think the battery might be better than what I was getting on darky 9.5...
i have been frustrated about my sgs for the first month until i discovered the rom world
usally the stock rom comes bloated with **** and uneeded stuff wich makes the phone slower and many other useless things...(i think)
i am still kind of new to all this and there is so much info do some reading and see how your sgs can be a beast
I too am not feeling the awesomeness of the Galaxy S. My friend got his one when it came out and its hard to believe this is the same phone I thought of as awesome all that time.
I got it new last week, and experiencing quirky behavior that really makes me feel like I'm using a low-mid class phone, and made me completely unenthusiastic/ not inclined with moving to the new phone which is how it should be. I even used my old Motorlla V8 for days after I got the SGS cos I was so unimpressed.
Poor camera, reception, crashes, dropouts, low wi fi signal, stutters, not responding to taps etc, really clunky loose volume button that makes it feel cheap, cheap sounding speaker. And I haven't installed anything on it except quadrant standard, and that crashes sometimes too.
To elborate a little. As far as comparable qualities go, compared to my Motorolla V8, The reception and voice quality is poor. Same network same simcard, I get half the signal, during a call it will sometimes dropout or make that guitar like noise, whereas my V8 never did any of that.
Even when I am next to a wi fi router. It doesn't show full wi-fi signal. Not even at my friends house. It reaches nowhere near as much as any laptop I have had.
I gotta compare these attributes to my friends sgs.
What I have compared so far is the camera, which is much worse on mine, You can see the thread here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081453
The AMOLED screen is also a lot dimmer, and cant display white as pure white but a grey/blue tint. Same settings max brightness.
For example quadrant standard, the spinning DNA like helix test. His background is pure snow white, mine is an off blue/grey dim white.
We also compared speakers, same song. His one has stronger clearer sounds, its quite noticable. All in all I'm wondering If I should replace my phone within the 14 day period.
I already took it back one about the camera issue to where I got it and the guy said its fine, so I would really have to go to Vodaphone or samsung directly to get a new one, which I did, and they said go to a repair centre. Even if they even have stock, it could be the same problems. And I would have to prove all these grey area problems.
Anyway check out my other thread as well and apply the Spectrum or Waveform Wallpaper. I wonder if its glitching here, but I think its most likely normal.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1086257
I will try upload a vid soon.
I am using my sgs now for 2 month, and i have to say its a great phone.
But its only great if you flash it.
In my opinion stock roms by Samsung are not fast enough,
full with useless apps and many tweaks like voodoo sound and gps fixes are missing.
(Tested 2 SGS from different providers, both roms not usable)
Try Darkys rom as also mentioned on page one.
There are many roms, and not all of them are bugfree and stable.
You have to remember the programmers arent payed for their work.
If you still have wifi problems uing darkys rom, your phone is damaged.
You probably need to start afresh.
Reflash a stock rom (ie. JPU which is a fill rom), then update to stock gingerbread. There shouldn't be many bugs at all.

I finally plucked up the courage to do exactly that.
I'm now running JVH with a CF rooted kernel and the phone is now performing close to what I hoped for.
Secondary boot loaders have also been fixed and I'll admit I held my breath during that flash.
Thanks to everyone here for providing the info I needed and making great roms.

Ive had mine since day 1 and its been amazing. No latency issues, wifi/data works perfectly, stable, no fc's(force closes), and the display is perfect. It seems they've gotten fairly "cheap" with the manufacturing of the newer, more recent models being shipped.
Love this phone... BUT, im still going to trade it in for an SGS2
Hi People.
I have my note since december and about a month later it started having problems.
The phone freezes and has to be rebooted, and then when you try to reboot it will be taking a long time with many many unsuccessful reboot trials in between.
I sent it to the service once and they just restored the factory settings(Thanks samsung because i didn't know how to do that myself) and then i sent it a second time, this time to samsung technical service where they diagnosed the phone as okay and blamed it on the battery.
It's been 4 days since the phone returned and today i have had the same issues with the new battery as well, so i am now pretty sure it's the phone.
before i call samsung and make a fuss about it to some manager i would like some feedback from you guys.
Has any of you encountered this issue with his phone?
On a scale of 1 to 10 how smooth would you describe your experience(in terms of issues and frustration) with the Note?
Also What would you guys do in my shoes?
Should i yell at them for selling me a malfunctioning phone and not repairing it at the service twice?
How do you think i should handle it?
Does samsung policy incluce giving you a new phone if it's having problems? When are you entitled to get one?
Lots of questions i know but i really need the answers. Thanks for the patience.

Also What would you guys do in my shoes?

hi Android 4.9 Marshmallow i m using note for 3 month ,i haven't noticed any freezing problem i m in stock non rooted rom and use launcher and lockers and lots of games and aaps but every thing runs smooth ...
for smoothness i wood give 9 out of 10 .
i dont know about ur country but u should ask them of a replacement ..
Thank you Gaurav99 for your answer, and good that you mentioned some specifics because i forgot to say that i am also on stock firmware, non rooted and i use Touchwiz default launcher.
I went with the phone as it was supposed to be by samsung.
I am going to need some more feedback from you guys. Please post.
My phone only hangs when I multitask heavily while downloading huge torrents in the background (adownloader)
Are you sure it's not a rouge app that's behind your issue ?
Maybe you do have a defective device but please do check your background apps first, cuz it really is a pain to get a replacement device from Samsung if you can't replicate the issue at the service centre.
Good luck.
Hi!
I have my Note since December and wanted to share my experience so you can come to a conclusion.
The stock firmware that was originally on the device was let's say 6 out of 10 smooth.
With the first Official update that was improved to 7-8 out of 10.
With the Official ICS update came close to 9.
Of course i must inform you that the time i use stock Roms are very few. Custom Roms (GB and ICS) are way smoother and lag-free.
Before starting to panic and going after Samsung, i advice you to Root your phone.
See if the "problem" continues.
IMO your experiencing the lag of the stoch firmware right know.
Hope i hepled! Good luck!

What's a "rouge" app?
My problem started again today right after i installed an app from 4shared. As the app opened it searched for a license to function properly and that's where my phone hung and i had to reboot.
It rebooted normally but shortly after it froze again and from then and on the phone could not reboot properly.
In the end i decided to wipe it clean and see whether the problem persisted.
It did. It got stuck right after the boot of the initial run of the wiped firmware.
The last thing i did with my phone before problems began was fill it with apps. I installed about 12-3 apps and two of them were from 4shared.
The way it happened this time(in relation to 4shared) made me think. But it's true that it happened in exactly the same way as before i send the phone to samsung for repairs, and then it used to happen with more "innocent" apps.
So can you describe what the procedure for a device replacement is?
Thanks in advance.
Hi Sotiris.
I want to try and root it and see if anything changes, but it would suck if there was a problem with the phone and the custom ROM patched it up temporarily for a few months. Imagine my distress when after a few months the issues come back suddenly, it's to going to be more than frustrating and i am going to regret not dealing with the issue when i could(now).
So since the company does not cover me if i root my phone or install a custom ROM, i have decided that i am not going to do those things.
I am going to ask them to take responsibility for a device that i paid dearly to have in my possession demanding the simple, logical and necessary demand that it works properly.
You see it's not a matter of "lag". It's a matter of functionality. My phone simply.does.not.work.
Imagine being afraid to install your favorite apps on your phone in fear that tomorrow you might have to wipe it and lose everything to restore the phone to working order. Beats the idea of a "smart"phone doesn't it?
Thanks for the feedback, and Να σαι καλά!

This is probably an old issue for some but it only recently started happening to me. I'm running SlimICS 4.0.4 on my Captivate (which is an awesome ROM), but lately, I'd say for around a month, the phone will shut off at random. The only way I can get it to boot past the AT&T screen is to plug it in. Any remedies for this or is my phone just on its last legs? I believe I upgraded in August, so I have another year to go yet before I can upgrade and I'm sure it's out of warranty so no returns/exchanges. I've tried a battery calibration tool, since I figured maybe the battery is getting old, but unfortunately that didn't work either.
Try upgrading your kernel, or whole ROM. sounds like a kernel issue. I'd recommend devil for ics.

Similar to how a KP will cause a Linux/Unix system to freeze or reboot? I'm fed up with it, it died mid-text with a 72% battery level... I may try CyanogenMOD since I'm somewhat familiar with it from using a previous version.
I just wanted to follow up on this. I figured since the phone was acting up and everything was backed up to my external SD card I didn't have much to lose by re-flashing it. I tried Doc's Master ICS, which worked briefly and crapped out. I then flashed back to bone stock OEM, stock bootloader, not rooted, etc... and it seemed to be working a little better, but unfortunately the freakin thing did it again numerous times. One ATT support call later and they're sending out a new phone.. I've read up on the random shutdown issue and found that phones under a certain number IMEI have had issues. Here's hoping I don't get another one out of the same batch.
