Shutdown issue - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I know first hand about the cappy's notorious shutdown issue. My first ever cap was quickly replaced due to this issue. My second one went about six months without a single shutdown. Then I bricked, sent to samsung for repair. They replaced the pba. When I got the phone back, I started running firefly rom. All of a sudden my phone would turn off and I would have to hold down power button for about 30 seconds to get it to turn on, or have to boot to recovery. I had a brand new cappy that I have had froyo and GB based roms on, and same prob. Replaced the new one, we'll c what happens. Question is, am I just really unlucky or are custom roms causing the prob? Is it possible the fix samsung did causes the prob in my old fixed phone? Old phone is a 1010, first new phone was an 1101, and newest phone is an 1102

I have had a phone of 1008 build...it was working fine until I flashed Onix kernel and it started shutting down randomly...so I got it replaced from ATT...now I have 1007 build and not a single problem what so ever...
I am not sure abt the custom rom (as I had flashed almost all roms on that 1008 build phone with Speedmod kernel with no problem), It might be related to kernel, as I experienced in my case..

Seems simple enough.
Flash Rom.....phone experiences shutdowns.
Flash stock......shutdowns continue?

Almost seems too easy! I wonder why most people do not use this logic?

Thanks for the sarcasm. You guys are really COOL. I just asked because sometimes I go several days without an issue. So to flash stock and check, and flash roms and check is a really drawn out process. Thought if I asked for others insight it might help. That's what this forum is for......right? Next time just don't respond.

After flashing and reflashing and voiding my warranty many times over, I've begun to wonder the same thing. I think that some phones are more prone than others to encounter problems when running custom roms due to hardware inconsistencies between individual phones. My phone is a 1006 build and although I've never had a single stability issue with official I897 firmware and I897 source-built roms, when I run I9000-based firmware I notice a few quirks. If I'm running an I9000-based kernel, my rocketflash AC adapter won't charge the phone while it's powered off (ok, I can live with that, just kinda weird). For a while I used existz's Onix kernel and I would always experience sleep deaths and sometimes lock-ups while using the phone when I tried to overclock (even to just 1.2ghz with minimal or no undervolting), and sometimes even when I wasn't overclocking. Now that I'm trying to claw my way onto the 2.3 bandwagon, I'm having trouble finding a rom that doesn't have the charging bug (charges to 100% and then starts draining), though some people say this isn't actually an issue (apparently their hardware behaves differently than mine with the same firmware). So, is it the phone or the roms? Yes.

I had a brand new phone and experienced the shutdowns 2 or 3 times a day. I then flashed firefly and they stopped. I also tried gb and they came back. Now im back on firefly and they stopped again. For me at least the shutdowns are completely rom/kernel dependent. Also I noticed on mosaic the shutdowns happened more frequently on certain kernels.

Thanks for letting me know ur experiences. Just thought it was weird that my phone that worked great for 6 plus months all of a sudden started shutting down after being fixed by samsung. I thought it was a rom, kernel issue. Sucks if firefly is the culprit cuz I like running it on my day to day phone, since I use GB roms on my other phone, and so far call quality sucks with them. Guess I'll try some other kernels with firefly and see how that goes. Thanks again.

good to know. thanks.

Hope u guys flashed the right modems, cuz that has created me some mad restarts on my early flashing days. Was so smart to flash kb1 on a i9000 kernel so go figure, when I tried to get a lock on gps I had neverending resarts.had to take sim out so that I could succesfuly start the rom again.Lesson learnd, read read and then read some more.

After flashing back to cognition I haven't had any shutdown issue... So till he gets newer gb rom I'm sticking with cogn.

Later Captivate build = better?

As far as I've known, there are several build of the Captivate, ranging from 1007 to the newest 1012. Also I've heard that later builds, especially 1010 and after, bring better GPS and no more random reset. However, later build also come along with easier soft-brick.
So, I want to start this poll to gather as many as possible of user's real experiences on the good/bad builds of our Captivates. Hopefully this will help us know which is a fully functional Cappy.
P/S: You should post comments with description on the performance (i.e. GPS, HUSPA..) and issue of your Captivate builds.
I picked up a Cappy from Rogers. A 1012... went through a few roms and lost 3 button dl. My fault, I think, I used Odin 3 one click, and I now know I should not have. Live and learn.

I have 1006 build and ever since I started flashing roms I've never had any problems. 3 button is awesome, download mode is consistent but stock 2.1 is horrible. Im running dilli rom 7.0 smooth as butter and gps lock instantly. Jl2 modem and custom kernel from dilli

I have a 1006 Captivate, and have never had the random shutdown issue or random reboots. I assume 1006s are candidates for the problem, but my particular phone doesn't have it. The GPS is, however, completely unsalvageable.
I have three button recovery and download mode from the button combination as well.

[Q] Does your phone suffer from random reboots?

For a long while now an on many different roms I have noticed my phone rebooting at what appears to be random atleast twice a week.
It's never been when in a call and I often only notice it because I see the boot animation on my phone out of the corner of my eye while it was doing nothing but being sat on my desk! Also I know when it has done it because it has switched back to my default network which I am not normally on.
For me I have had it on everything from CM7 to Juwes to docs rom to stock. If this is not normal behaviour I fear that my phone may have a hardware fault
Post your random reboot experiences here!
My experience: rarely with Darky 10.1, I got one today with Juwe 5.1 but I installed this rom two days ago and still making some experiment.
Bye.
always close to stock cfroot only + own changes = never had issues ...
Both my husband and I get them at least twice a week also, we are on stock JVH that we got from O2 through Kies, not rooted or anything. we are thinking of phoning samsung tomorrow, we never had any of these on 2.2, so I think it must be software with us both getting them since 2.3. both our phones are still in guarantee, although if it is software I dont know what they can do
TBH I haven't actually been on a pure stock rom for quite some time. From what I remember I would get the occasional random reboot but probably not quite as often as I have done since turning to custom roms.
Could some fundamental change that many custom roms make cause this?
Or could perhaps a certain rogue app which I have had installed on many different roms be causing this?

Yes this is partly why I decided to create this thread and try to get to the bottom of it. My warranty runs out in 2/3 months and the paranoid side of me fears a hardware issue. I also started on 2.2 and don't think I got quite as many, if any, random reboots then which seems to coincide with your experiences.

Yeah our guarantee runs out in about 6 or 7 weeks which is why I thought of phoning them, my phone has been back once because the motherboard or whatever its called had to be replaced. do you think it could be hardware?

I have no idea. I'm starting to think probably not. so far 75% of people to this poll have reboots either daily or weekly. I think it could be a software bug in all gingerbread based roms but i really don't no. Would be interesting to flash back to stock froyo and see if it persists then.
Keep an eye on this thread and hopefully we can get to the bottom of this

question/thread title is "Does your phone suffer from random reboots?" so majorityof people that does not have any reboots/problems will not join to read so they will not vote
also by the thread title in some way youre determining the anserw yet still youve got 15 people voted (thats not authoritative + 350 thread openings...) & 33% of them said NEVER
I used to get random reboots on stock firmware, because samsung can't write software! Since running cm7 based software (insanity cm) I haven't had one single reboot, the stability is mindblowing and it is super stable, however it is not really for flashing novices, just my humble opinion

Yes I do admit I haven't received the amount of feedback I was hoping for in this thread. And yes I am fully aware that polling on here is far from an accurate way of gathering data exactly for the reason you suggested but still I hoped to learn something about the extent of this phenomenon.
Also when I wrote that quote that you critisied for being inaccurate it was correct at the time. If not a little premature
However please feel free to share your experiences (or lack of) the topic in question.
I voted 'very rarely' - usually when running a buggy app that uses all RAM and CPU.
No reboots by itself so far.
to much, using dark core 2.6 , pilotx rom
Wow I thought I am the only who suffer with this..LOL...My phone is running JVO 2.3.3 and I updated it via Kies...no root no lagfix, quite a virgin Galaxy S..hahaah...
Very rarely, and it was only after this one time I had to swap batteries and didn't allow the phone to fully shutdown which must've caused some corruption. Even though I restored a backup certain things just seemed off and turned out I did had problems with reboots and so after that, most likely being the cause.
Besides that, after putting in a fresh ROM and whatnot, never had issues, not before the incident save once maybe.
I have changed to juwe 5.1 today from his 5.0. Was playing angry birds and left phone down for minute, then soon as screen locked it rebooted itself. Have not tried with other apps yet. Will post back when tried them out

Phone rebooting and other problems. Help!

So I flashed Illuminance which is a KK4 or 2.3.5 ROM. It keeps randomly rebooting and that is only one of the problems. I can't send or receive MMS, even when my APN is set correctly, I had to install swype so it's some lame beta version that can't even spell properly. There are literally too many issues to post here. Can someone either tell me why all this crap is happening, or share with me a good ROM that is very STABLE with a great battery life! I don't even care if it's OCed, in fact, I would prefer one that is barely OCed or UCed at all. Then I don't have to worry about hardware damage. Thanks!
Well I'm not sure what's causing those problems but I'm on Darky's 9.5 ROM with the ZNKP1 modem and Darkcore 1.4_C kernel. gingerbread's battery drains are too much for me to "upgrade".

When you have issues like that first thing to try is reflashing the rom. Sometimes you just get a bad flash

how good is the current ICS leak?

Should I stay with my LA6 until official ICS arrives? or is the current ICS leak pretty much it?
I have read that the leaks also increase the binary count, is it right?
im sticking with LA6 until a proper release of ICS is available, i got tired of flashing updates week in week out when i had my HD2 and only haviung certain things working
depends on if you can live with the current bugs or not
I'm having a few issues with the Chinese leak.
1.GPS issues cant get a lock (seems to be a baseband issue.
2. Names on my contact list have all changed to Chinese names lol. Strange one
For ultimate stability stick with LA6 trust me it's not worth the aggro

For the Chinese leak, fast and stable except for one big problem: sleep of death nearly daily, so now in GB again.
I tried 3 ICS roms so far, and reverted back to Darky 3.3 each time...
(compatibility, chinese remains, root issues, unstable recovery, etc)
I hope there will be a stable AOSP version out there soon, Talk 4 is very good!
Why can't the Note be Google's flagship phone, ffs ? xD

I am running the Chinese leak, gps locks for me, wifi works, phonebook names are in English and caller id also works, sod only when battery is low. So the outcome is different for different people. Been running it daily for 3 days now.
I did full wipe first, then loaded the rom through desktop odin without pit file. After that flashed the ZCLP1 over as chainfire version doesn't include modem. In regards to yellow triangle, cos it's ICS, just use triangle away app to remove triangle and reset counter to 0, no need for jig.
So far all working well for me. Also I run it at 240dpi, so I am using go launcher and exDialer as replacements. Some people have problems with default SMS, but cos I use go sms pre can't comment cos I have no problems. Lastly, WhatsApp also doesn't fc for me.

little off topic but i dont believe samsung doesnt have a full working ics rom for n7000 from the beginning. i think they are just entertain us with the early ics rom samples. samsung and google want nexus to be the only ics phone on the market for a while longer.
I've been running the i9220 leak since it leaked. I've gotten a random reboot ONCE - it was actually last night. I was at 30% battery. I had just recently reflashed from mobile odin cause my /system partition was borked. I've had just random issues, but it's been a daily driver no problem.
No two chips are the same though - give it a shot - support chainfire and do it right via Mobile Odin. Hate it? Mobile odin back to stock and flash a new rom.
Just my 2cents.
Hello all. I am running the Chinese ICS leak right now as my daily ROM. It is very stable and VERY smooth. Trust me, I am a stickler for functionality, I wouldn't settle for something that keeps crashing all the time. The conspiracy lol. I've been running the leak since release and haven't had a deal breaker problem yet. I've experienced screen of death a few times. Battery life is excellent and nova launcher makes it 10 times better. There's not a single thing that gingerbread did that I can't with ics.
My suggestion is to start fresh and leave your gingerbread titanium back ups uninstalled.
Only thing I'm missing is tablet mode.

ICS is amazing on the Note, been using it for a few days.
good enough for everyday use but still quite far from a release candidate.
I've been using the ICS repack from day dot and I can't go back.
It's awesome for me and the performance is amazing in comparison to ever GB rom I've tried before.
Strangely I haven't had any of the issues people have been complaining about (gps, SOD etc)

I wish there was a way to solve the godamn SOD. All I know it's affected by battery life, and the lower it goes, the more frequent it happens.

[Q] Shuts off at random

This is probably an old issue for some but it only recently started happening to me. I'm running SlimICS 4.0.4 on my Captivate (which is an awesome ROM), but lately, I'd say for around a month, the phone will shut off at random. The only way I can get it to boot past the AT&T screen is to plug it in. Any remedies for this or is my phone just on its last legs? I believe I upgraded in August, so I have another year to go yet before I can upgrade and I'm sure it's out of warranty so no returns/exchanges. I've tried a battery calibration tool, since I figured maybe the battery is getting old, but unfortunately that didn't work either.
Try upgrading your kernel, or whole ROM. sounds like a kernel issue. I'd recommend devil for ics.

Similar to how a KP will cause a Linux/Unix system to freeze or reboot? I'm fed up with it, it died mid-text with a 72% battery level... I may try CyanogenMOD since I'm somewhat familiar with it from using a previous version.
I just wanted to follow up on this. I figured since the phone was acting up and everything was backed up to my external SD card I didn't have much to lose by re-flashing it. I tried Doc's Master ICS, which worked briefly and crapped out. I then flashed back to bone stock OEM, stock bootloader, not rooted, etc... and it seemed to be working a little better, but unfortunately the freakin thing did it again numerous times. One ATT support call later and they're sending out a new phone.. I've read up on the random shutdown issue and found that phones under a certain number IMEI have had issues. Here's hoping I don't get another one out of the same batch.
