There is a posibility you will break your note, because of superbrick bug. Flash safe kernel like notecore.

better be safe than sorry.
I would agree to some of the advice here, flash it to a secure kernel like speedmod, CFroot or notecore. Did an upgrade before thru OTA but I never desire to factory reset my Note. It runs optimally fast even without doing the reset.
Regarding Root, there are no problems at all. Root it thru PC Odin. There is a guide created by Dr. Ketan's thread which will safely help you getting root on your phone.
Cheers!

Safe to root is to flash Notecore kernel using PC-Odin. Simple yet safe. Cherios. :good:

[Q] official XXLPY ICS ROM...help

i own a galaxy note GT-N7000..my first sammy device. i have been waiting for what seems like an eternity for an official update here in SOUTH AFRICA. so i looked around the web for ways of updating safely and easily cause im a noob at this really. well, i found this http://www.theandroidsoul.com/xxlpy/
but then i also found a warning about flashing this ROM...
my question now is: how can i get ICS without rooting my phone and without bricking it? has the soultion been found to this eMMC bug?
and if i follow instructions on the link provided, will i be prompted to updated when sammy finally gets around to giving me an OTA?
how do i enjoy ICS without worrying about something being slowly corroded in my phone...
help

If you follow that instructions you will be fine as long after flashing dont factory reset or recovery data wipe. The only solution to be safe is to have safe ics kernel like speedmod k3-3 or franco r3,r4,r5& r6.

Yes you will no longer get an update. You can always use the pc odin to update dont worry.
If you follow those instruction you will loose your root but you can always get rooted if you flash speedmod k3-3.
Sorry, if you follow those instruction you will remain unrooted.
if i flash the xxlpy rom and then after i get ics flash the lc1 gingerbread, will that be fine? will i get to keep ics while running it on the gingerbread firmware?

If you flash ics your in ics. If flash gb your in gb. There is no dual boot.
Sorry going to bed. Just follow the instruction you'll be fine. If your not sure, just remain in gb, you will get better batery life compare to ics.
ok thanks...battery life is important...oh well i just thought maybe i could run the ics rom but have a safe firmware...
one more question , kies asks me to update my firmware, will updating to the latest firmware which i assume is lc1 , will updating delete all my game data files?
All stock ics is no wipe, it will not delete your data.
If an update im sure it is ice cream sandwich android, if its not then i dont know its a wipe or no wipe but if its a wipe then it will delete all your data better back it up if i were you.

See if you can odin back to gingerbread... You wiped on ics.. So many threads warning not to do this.... Was you on stock unrooted when you wiped? If so let Entropy512 on cm9 thread know, he might be able to help you... If you were on stock when you bricked don't do anything till you speak to Entropy512

What can he do? Is is not the only one with brick expertise. Its time for a brew mother board.
Factory reset an ICS stock kernel results in an instant brick

in stock kernel and just rooted with SU+BUSYBOX
Use odin to flash a stock GB rom from Dr.ketan thread (link in his signature).
If it stuck in factoryfs.img or datafs.img then have a superbrick Note.
In that case only a new mother board or repartition method below can help:

your steps are on the right track. Update to 4.0.4 using PC kies.. and root it after again. The extra steps you need to do after rooting would be to install Chainfire's Triangle Away app to reset your binary counter of your phone.
After that, then you should be good to go!

well.. if you rooted it before.. it's going to lose root once you upgrade it to 4.0.4.. root it back again (install a safe kernel) and put your worries aside. Rooting will not cause your bricking..
bricking is caused when your initiating a factory wipe on your phone on a unsafe ICS kernel. Most bricks are caused when people readily go jumping the wagon on wiping their data without thinking it first if they're on a safe kernel or not.

[Q] Restore Factory Setting with eMMC Brickbug 0x19

Good day to all,
Just want to ask if i perform a hard reset (restore factory settings) with VYL00M rev. 0x19 chip, will my phone be bricked?
Also, if i have a brickbug chip does it mean i cannot perform root from my GNote and just stick with Samsung Official kies update?
Thanks in advance.
Best regards,
Kenneth
(Upgraded to Gnote from SE Xperia Arc)
It depends on what kernel you are running.
Judging by your post I assume you are on stock rom and stock kernel.
So if you have a brickbug chip which is highly likely, if you do a factory reset you will end up with a brick.
So what you need to do, is flash root your phone (plenty of tutorials) and then flash a safe kernel such as Philz or Hydracore.
Once you are on a custom kernel and NOT on a stock samsung kernel, then you are free to wipe and factory reset to your hearts content.
Good luck.
Thank you Sir. Just one question before i proceed. Do i need root to flash a safe kernel? Or just get the kernel and flash thru odin.

Hang on. I forgot to mention.
The brickbug will only occur if you are on Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0).
If you are on Gingerbread (Android 2.3) you can factory reset and wipe without worries.
In regards to your question, you have 2 options.
1. get root only
2. get root and safe kernel
Just follow this thread in regards to rooting and stuff.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
Thanks again Sir. Will try it later. Just looking for my receipt from the carrier so worst case will be warranty.
By the way, I'm on ICS 4.0. Thanks again and have a wonderful day.

[Q] Would appreciate your advice

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read this.
I have the Galaxy Note N7000, android 4.0.4, baseband N7000XXLRK, build number IMM76D.XXLRU.
Can someone please explain shortly what is the deal with brick bug and bad kernel.
The phone is notifying me that there is an software update but i'm afraid to install it because i've read that some kernels are bad and if you factory data reset your phone after update, then i would permanently damage the phone.
Also, from what i understood, there is already official jb 4.1.2 available for this phone, is it safe to install it when it will come OTA?
Now, i do realize that probably my question is outdated considering that there is a lot of information about this subject, so therefore i appreciate in advance those of you willing to answer me, thank you!
If you do a factory reset on stock ICS kernel, it may brick your phone. This happens on stock ics kernels. That's why we have custom safe kernels likes philz, speedmod etc.
Official JB is available and if you update via Kies i think it should be okay.
Install the update don't worry it will be ok.. Just don't do any factroy reset on stock ics

Thank you guys for your answers.
So if my phone now has the ICS 4.0.4 installed, logically i assume that the kernel on my phone is an ICS kernel that is dangerous, is that correct?
What is better: to avoid data factory reset the phone or install a safe kernel?
Also, which is the safer way to install JB, OTA or KIES, or it doesn't matter?
Again, thank you.

Install a safe kernel as who knows when there will be a need for a reset.

Kies if you can... OTA is too dodgy.. PC odin is also good
nokiamodeln91, thank you for your answer.
One last question: what is the correct order, install the update and after the safe kernel, or install the kernel and after the update?
Thank you.
Firstly install the philz kernel then do a full wipe and then install the jb update(use pc odin to update)
