Hi what is best? i took windows wallpapers they are JPG should i convert to PNG (bigger file size) is it better or just the best jpg?
Or What is best for wallpapers JPG or PNG and dont tell me to Google it cause i could not find the answear
PNG is better, JPG is way more compressed than PNG. Even better than PNG is BMP btw. Just try to draw something in MS paint, save it as JPG then as PNG and compare
It depends.
Regarding quality png is best since it uses a lossless compression. But since you are asking what format is best for a wallpaper I would go with jpg. File size should be far smaller with jpg. Unless it's a drawing or the like with not many colors and hard edges then png would probably be better again.

PNG is better because its faster and not compressed
PNG because supports transparency
Its just for wallpapers JPEG is the one you want and you don't need transparency on a background stick with jpeg it saves your memory and you won't see the difference

why would you convert jpg to png? if the quality of jpg is already low, converting to png serves no purpose, right?
generally it's good to keep photos in png format. but if it is just pictures which originally comes from jpg, just stick with it since its size are mostly smaller.
dont even think of converting lower quality jpg to higher jpg as well.
either of the two. its ok.

Attached is a "zip" file containg two bmp files. They are the exact same size 28 dpi, 320 x 240
One I created with a webgraphic in Photoshop. The other is from Molski's kitchen as a sample image. Problem is whenever I try convert them it says file too large? Anyone have any ideas?
Molski's script (splash1):
Make sure you got a file named splash1.bmp in your splash folder!
Press any key to continue . . .
Converting Bitmap into .nb SplashScreen file....
LZ77 compress \DEVPACK\splash\splash1.bmp to C:\DEVPACK\tools\splash\splash1\9d0
00000-HTC.nb...
Input file: 230456 bytes
Output file: 75679 bytes (32.8%)
Warning: This bitmap is too big to fit into flash memory
Done!
Moving first SplashScreen file to Splash folder in the ROMDUMP....
Done!
Press any key to continue . . .

I also tried using "image convertor" and flashing the resulting nb file. Both ways stop at 80% when flashing.
try to decrease colors to 32k, then save as bmp.
Must be 24 bitmap
If you are absolutely sure that the images are 240 x 320 save them as 24 bitmap images (Use MS Paint)

Sorry I am confused by your statement, they are 8bit RGB, and they are saved as 24bit bmp. How do I reduce color to 32k? This is probably the answer I am looking for, reduced color would be more compressible!

I use GIMP (so may work different with other graphic programs) but here's a couple of tricks:
* Open the .bmp up and then save it as a .gif. Close down that graphic window, and now open a new one with the .gif you just saved. Now save that to .bmp. Just doing this will sometimes flatten and modify the graphic enough to get it to compress and fit
* Save your .bmp to .jpg and really compress it (yeah, it gets grainy though. This is what I had to do to the HTC screen in Faria's Rom Kitchen and my Crossbow Reloaded. I think I put it down to like 40% or 60% before it would fit). Once you do that, now open that file back up and save it as a .bmp
* As stated above, play with switching between RGB And Indexed, and changing the color pallets.
Hope these ideas help...
Thanx mfrazz I'll give that a try!

I have been trying this in variations for two days, I still can't get that little devil to work!! Even changed the color from red to blue to green. If you use indexed color you can not save it as a 24bit bmp. So I saved as 8bit, wouldn't work. Reconverted it to 24 bit, didn't work. Gif file then bmp didn't work... Please I really want to know, I am pretty adept in PhotoShop, and I like to think I am pretty creative. If I can figure out how to make this work, I will make some unbelievable cool splash-screen/Logos!! I will even take requests!!
SOLVED!!

Note: If your own bitmap is compressed and the HTC_Logo.nb exceeds the 64K limit, the bitmap is too complex. The Lz compression can't handle it.
Save the BMP as a gif file, then open the gif and save it again as a bmp. The compression of gif is enough to simplify the bitmap.
Then try 1b-1c again.
If it still is not enough, then you'll have to convert to jpeg (try lowest compression first!) and re-convert it to BMP, after that try 1b-1c again..

I did a search so forgive me if this has been answered already.
I just noticed that when setting wallpaper in TF3D that it seems to downscale the resolution of the wallpaper to a lower more pixelated version instead of the nice high res original that you can view via the album.
In the album it looks amazing but as a wallpaper it doesn't look as nice.
What is the deal with this? Is there any kind of fix to get full res wallpapers?
The album app doesn't make it a proper wallpaper. It lowers the quality and resolution, saves it as JPG. TF3D then stretches it.
For proper background you need to copy it to your computer and use CFC GUI or Maranell0's background tool.
Hi,
I've been playing around transferring files onto my phone, but I just can't get my lock screen to look right.
1. Does anyone know what the exact dimensions of the lockscreen image should be? I read 320x480 somewhere, but this isn't correct. I've also tried 360x380, 340x480. Maybe it's 345x480? I want to get this right because...
2. Whenever I set an image onto the lock screen, the phone seems to compress the image really badly and I see loads of jpg artifacts on the parts that should be solid colour. I'm hoping that if the image is the right size, it won't convert/re-sample/re-compress the file.
Any ideas?

The stock ones are 320 x 455, and I've had good results using those dimensions for my own images.
Im sure i read that converting your image to a png and using that instead of the png file gave better results also. Not 100% on that though lol
.png gives better quality than jpg.
320x455 px is the right size. But everytime you set wallpaper, HTC software it re-compress as JPEG in tragical quality. PNG or JPEG, that makes no difference.
Will be nice software like Wallpaper Set & Save for lock screen wallpaper. But I can't find something like that.

Not my experience. My own images are usually desktop 'papers resized and/or cropped to 320x455 and saved as JPEGs, and provided I ensure the green 'crop box' is expanded to encompass the entire image when selecting the lockscreen they look just as good as the originals.
I've tried many images. At most (as you) cropped or resized desktop wallpapers. I prepare the correct size and copy to phone. I keep JPEG at 90 to 100% of quality and also convert it to PNG. And every image was resampled during setting up as lock screen wallpaper. Everytime its quality goes rapidly down. Even I used exactly the same way like you.
It is not good visible on landscape wallpapers with. But on artifical images it's very big problem. It blurs every contrast line on image.
Try it on this image: http://anowia.deviantart.com/art/Light-Blaze-HD-Wallpaper-129153930 If you don't notice any resample after setting up as lock screen wallpaper, please provide screenshot.

Here you go.... see what you think. View attachment lockscreen.zip
Not perfect, but it was a rush job. Resized from 1280x1024 to ???x455, then cropped to 320x455. Saved as JPEG @ 100% for use. Photoshop Elements 7 used. If I had more time I'd probably play with the sharpening to compensate for the downsizing.

Also having this issue with this image..
I have problems with all images. But on this it's good visible. And as Shluggity's screenshots shows, it's not only my problem. I think it's not good
I'm not sure what's going on but there's definitely some sort of degradation visible, a softening of the edges. I honestly haven't seen it in my own wallpapers, but I haven't used images like this with lots of thin sharp 'light beam' effects. Maybe original image res is a factor, maybe screen dpi, maybe something completely different... If I have time tomorrow I'll do some tests.
how does wallpaper set and save work? maybe the wallpaper directory is similar to the lockscreen directory?
Have you tried HeroLockWall? (Market)
lockscreen wallpaper help..
i have the same problem i cant get lockscreen wallpaper to work every time i try i get a tile wallpaper and not a stretch wallpaper that i want can sum body help me plz??
As above, so that it can fit to scale of my HTC Desire HD as wallpaper?
Any ideas guys?
When you select an image to use as a wallpaper the phone will let you resize it.
Otherwise best bet is to change it on your PC in something like Photoshop or Gimp. You could also use one of the free online image resizers.
Image size should be 960x800 for best fit
I tried changing to 960x800 but when setting the wallpaper right, it doesn't let me use up the whole picture. Why is it so?
That's because the picture you are trying to use will have a different aspect ratio to the aspect ratio of 960x800 (I can't remember if it's 4:3 or 3:2).
Any resolution (640x480 etc) photo with the same aspect ration can be resized to fit without cropping any of the image. However, when trying to resize an image of a different aspect ratio some of it will get cropped.
In Photoshop, when you resize an image if you uncheck the box that says "Constrain Proportions" you can make the image fit 960x800, although it will look distorted.

When I open some android theme PNG files they look blocky, and black. As if they are being downsampled (which it saying alot lol).
I can open them in Fireworks and they look fine.
Can anyone explain to me what is going wrong?
Open in inmage ready then CTRL+SHIFT+M to open in photoshop
ok, but why does this happen? What is difference between the PNGs?
This happens when the .pngs are indexed. They compress the images by indexing them to save space. Programs like image ready or fireworks can convert them to regular rgb images so you can manipulate them.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
the only work around ive found is either gimp, fireworks, or imageready. if you want to use photoshop you'll just have to recreate the image.
Once you've imported from imageready to photoshop, you can go to mode>RGB and edit as you wish
I've been having the same problem. Just downloaded Paint.NET and you can view the indexed images perfectly. Its nice for quick edits. If your doing something a little more in depth, open with Paint.NET and save. Then open with Photoshop. At least thats whats working for me at the moment.
PNGOUt Plugin
There is a nice PNGOUT plugin for Photoshop that let's you open and save alpha transparency indexed images directly in Photoshop. http://www.ardfry.com/
