Desire C. - HTC Salsa

Well I got my son his upgrade this week, a desire c.
Its nice, running ics, has 95mb internal to start with, a nippy 600 core. And once connected to a good size SD card, it monitors and shares space around the phone.
The bump to send an app feature is cool.
I was disappointed to find we have a faster phone overall and yet we cannot have it.
Also found playing temple run easy on the desire c.
So....after the 14day grace period is over I'm gonna have a look inside it. See what I can find. And being as there's no forum for it just yet...try and root it too.
But this makes me think why should we carry on with this salsa?? HTC don't care. Our phone shops are knocking them out cheap, and as I did say to them when I got the upgrade, how can u sell a phone that will never be supported by its maker.....I just got a disgruntled look and told that's htc for you.
I will never stop producing roms etc for this but I may move to the new xperia range yet as its far more advanced now Unless something can be done for us.
So people what we need is a kernel developer to help us. There issue is they don't have our phone to test it on...so why should they help us.....anyone find a way to get this moving...please post up!

Diamond, should I?

Hello guys!
I've got nice price for my Desire, so I'm going to sell it. Since my Leo took a shower few weeks back it is dead. But, I've found a Diamond, not used. And the price is very low. About 1/3 of what I get for my Desire. BUT, I only want this if I can install Android on it.
I've found this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=601751), does this realy work? If it does, I'm going to buy this in this week.
I've waiting for Evo, but since it is not available in my country (yet), I want to buy something "cheap" and use it when I wait for my Evo and then have it as my backup mobile.
Well, let me make the long short, does this phone with Android (If it is possible) work for everyday use? I've read that lots of "Force Close" pops up?
Thanks in advance
Lots of respect for XDANDROID ... I am using it (and continuously update to the newest build) ... but not as a productive system for daily use.
Two main reasons for me:
1. battery consumption improved but still ..
2. limited memory of the Diamond ...
You may go through the thread of XDANDROID to see further comments ...
BTW, there is also XDANDROID 2.2 out now (alpha though)
Cheers!

Hello! Thanks for your answer.
I've just found this:
http://www.androidonhtc.com/wiki/Port_Status
But I understand what you mean. I also forgot that this phone has no memory card slot (?) I've going to need this...
First off,I'm sorry about your Leo...May it rest in peace...
The Diamond is a really good phone and by far the most beautiful one that I have got my hands onto, but it's a 2 year old device. It was the top back in 2008,but now it's really...moderate!But why would you want to sell your Desire?Keep it until the Evo comes to your country(which is by the way...?) and then sell it!

I've also miss my Leo!
I know the Diamond, my girlfriend has it Yeah, it is old but this does not matter for me if I can install Android on it. The reason why I sell my Desire is cause I got very good price for it. I'm from Norway.
I've also saw that few hours ago HD2 booted with Linux, maybe I should get a new HD2 and use it with Android. That would be awsome! But this will take a long time tou...

I wouldn't recommend a second-hand HD2. Go for a new handset.

For sure, I'm going to buy new. My point was that Android can't be far away from running on HD2
If you want Android I wouldn't recommend the HD2.Yes,it's one of the best out there and now there is an Android port, but such a port has been available for the Diamond and its compatibles for a very long time now and it's not usable for everyday use.No disrespect to the work that's being done,I really appreciate it and use it on my Diamond, but I have it as a backup phone so it doesn't really matter to me if it works flawlessly as I use my Hero everyday.Android on HD2 is in very early stages, not even open for anyone to try and I think it will be a long time before we see it working efficiently.

Yes, I understand your point. And by my post above yours I meant about 5-6 months with short time
Maybe it takes longer may not, the thing is, I don't know when Evo wil be available in my country...

My friend I think that neither you nor I will get an Evo in our countries...It seems that smartphone companies are on a US-frenzy sort of thing and release all the good stuff there these days...What we get?One device in our market for every 10 devices in the American market...

oh
Going for HD2 then... :/ Diamond has 4GB internal memory, I need more then that

.. Is the milestone ... Outdated ?

i am about to buy a smartphone (for the first time since my dumbphone SE W595)
and i want something perfect that'll stay with me like 2 years or so
i checked all of the new phones (Desire + n1 + Galaxy S and millions!) and honestly even with all these teachy stuff and zippy processor .. i didn't like a phone more than the Milestone
Big screen + QWERTY keyboard + pretty good camera for a go-go price !
but .. it was released on the end of 2009 and have a 550MHz (though it can be overclocked anytime) and that locked bootloader (ugh!)
wat i want on a phone is 1-watch movies & videos , 2-loading my almost 5500 set of music in it 3- hardcore 3D gaming , 4-good camera , 5-QWERTY (regular teenager stuff) and Android !
is it really the right phone for me or i should wait for something better (e.g Milestone 2?) (as the international Droid 2) ?
Regards , Mike
I would wait, the milestone has been out for a while now and there should be some new models coming out soon. If I were you I would wait for a new qwerty android phone to be released.
I would also wait. The droid does sound like the perfect phone for you, but the thing is, all the stuff you really look forward to doing kills your battery. I have a rooted droid clocked at 1ghz. Battery life really isn't that great, but overall i sincerely love the phone.
I would wait, too...I have the Milestone, is a really great phone (as you said, big screen+QWERTY is just perfect) but buying it now is pointless, in my opinion. I would suggest to wait for new devices similar to the Milestone to come out and then make a choose.
And the camera isn't that great, really.
Thanks everyone
.. is there any great phones (or leaks) with QWERTYs in the next few weeks which are non-Motorola ? i mean is there any leaks ? (other than that ugly HTC Vision) ?
damn i wish we had a GSM version of HTC Incredible .. it's a perfect phone (only missing a keyboard though)
somebody told me girlfriends are like mobile phones, you only wish for a new and better one, as to what you have.
so there's nothing new about your dilemma.i'd suggest you go for it, because new would come but then it's price will delay or postpone you a prized possession. secondly, nowadays a mobile phone is more worthy if it it's most popular in hacking community, like Xperia X1, in my sane mind i'd never suggest this phone to anyone, but imagine ubuntu and android along with Winmo, the phone is a must have. And my dearest SE P1i.
Go for it, you'd never regret a moment of it am already looking for Xperia X1 and Milestone (second or even third hand).
yeah , your right .. but the thing is .. back in 2008 (when i only knew dumbphones and smartphones prices were a blast) i bought my beloved and now stolen SE w595 .. just a couple a days later , Here Comes SE w902 & samsung i8510 .. a better camera + bigger screen .. stuff
Honestly i felt like my new w595 was turned into bull****! i dont want that to happen next if i buy a milestone
but when i think about it .. it was out for a year .. is there really something new coming ? all the good damn phones comes to the US (droid incredible , samsung epic 4G) while leaving us lay in the dust
everytime i try to convinve myself to buy the milestone by saying (i'm just a teenager .. why would i need a 1GHz CPU and stuff like that ?) but honestly i just can't help it .. for god's sake the galaxy spica is faster than that !
beside that locked bootloader .. when i thought about it for like 2 minutes i say what's the joy having an android when you can't root it/install ROMs ? because back in the days when i had the w595 i used to change themes & flash menus like a maniac !
i've decided to wait for a non-Motorola device , i've taken myself a hour to think about it .. that's my decision .. Thanks everyone !
I literally just picked up the Milestone on Telus two days ago, and don't regret it. It's pretty sweet, and I don't see the Droid X or the Incredible coming (I assume you're in Canada, as you're looking at the Milestone..) any time soon up here.
With the customization and rooting available, it's a pretty sweet phone.
Just me though. Good luck with picking a phone.
The driod 2 is released any day now but I wonder how long we have to wait for a milestone 2
Edit: I bought my Milestone 2 weeks ago. And I love it.
it will outdated in term of operating system, currently we only get android 2.1 which everybody already has 2.2
and next time 3.0 released we can only bite our nail ^^
it will be soon!
Hi guys, actually i've more or less pretty decided to get the milestone already due to it's nice form factor and android, also pretty much i'd like to have a qwerty keyboard for a change.
I'm currently rocking a HD2, and i don't intend to sell it yet. But was interested in android after running froyo 2.2 and sense desire build on it. So i was like pretty much wanting to get an adroid device to play with and see how it goes. No suitable options in the marketplace for nexus 1 and it's way over my budget, i reckon i can get a milestone (brand new) over here in sg for around 550 Singapore Dollars, so i thought i get it! (TODAY, LOL)
So i thought i'd pop by xda for trusted opinions and rooting possibilities, and i'm faced with little support for the milestone as compared to the crazy HD2 forum, LOL. So i'm wondering is it possible to root my milestone? And what do you guys mean by bootloader locked? And why? Pardon me as i'm pretty new to android, had a g1 in the past, but didn't play much with it and sold it, now i'm back! Haha.
I'd appreciate any links to other sites for help and more info and prolly more support than what we're getting here? If you feel uneasy to post, you could pm me. Thanks!!
Any issues i must take note of with buying milestone? Since i read some had wifi and baseband issues, D-pad down button is bad etc. LOL. And the droid's back cover is loose, not sure about the milestone though. Plus is there really a huge difference in droid and milestone when it comes to development/rooting/flashing roms etc.?
The only difference i know of currently is one's CDMA the other's GSM and the droid doesn't support multi-touch natively until the updated the software as well as the droid has got fm radio?
Oh ya, there's no wireless teethering on milestone? Meaning my laptop uses my phone's network?!
Appreciate all advice!!
Sorry for uber long posts!

Man, it's really lacking in support for milestone over here at xda, or there's nothing to support at all? LOL. For the first time, i'm a little disappointed with xda. Hahahaha, i hope people could point me in the right direction for milestone news and tips etc. Anyways, heading to get it now!!
Quick answers:
- You can root the phone, as in, have access to modify the system at root level.
- A locked bootloader means you can't use any other kernels except those signed by Motorola themselves. We're all hoping for methods like 2ndboot and kexec to help us out here
- You can tether via USB,WiFi, or Bluetooth.
i have a Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 with windows mobile.. I originally wanted the Milestone but since i could get the X1 for half the price of the Milestone i decided to get it. I am now in the process of selling the X1 and getting the Milestone (probably next week)

Thanks. I went ahead and get it anyway. Haha. I'm hoping for more support and some flashing goodness soon! Plus 2.2 froyo!! Some issues or concerns i found so far. I realised that the device gets hot pretty easily and not normal kind of heat, rather at the area below the camera at the back when holding landscape. And in gmail app, you can never empty your trash permanently. This kinda sucks, as the trash always restore.

where did you get it for 550? I was at a starhub shop the other day and it wasn't even close to 550.
If you don't want to wait, there's always the Samsung Epic 4G or Galaxy S Pro, whatever it is called in your region. If you don't mind that there is no camera flash.

Are those phones even out yet ? Would you be able to install custom ROMs for them in the future?
The milestone looks better in my opinion.. (physically) but seeing how its got a locked bootloader... im afraid of buying a phone (with so many options at this day) that could be already stuck on its final OS version.
If only the Xperia X10 had a physical keyboard (i dont like the mini pro version) id probably buy it. I want an android phone with a physical keyboard not only for texting but also for emulators and the milestone seems the way to go ... as its about $420 too. (amazon)
I'm in the same boat as some of you. A former Xperia X1 user who got tired of flashing with ROMs that aren't stable and sluggish. I don't want to get an official ATT phone cause I am on the MediaNet unlimited plan and I like to tether to my laptop. I also like having a QWERTY keyboard and been wanting to try Andriod OS. Some questions:
1) What specifics should I look for to ensure I'm getting the Telus version of DROID and unlocked for AT&T to ensure 3G?
2) I saw recent news that there is no official support for Tethering or wifi router mode on DROID, but are there apps (even the Xperia X1 did).
3) Can anyone tell from just what's listed on Overstock and Amazon whether those phones will work on ATT 3G? Many thanks.
I already sold my X1, been using my old Samsung BLackjack 2....need new phone...SOON!

help me deside.

Hi
I have ben looking to buy the lg 2x optimus for a while. Reports of isues, the phone not working proberly, battery, bluetooth isues and so on, have ben holdning me off. And i have infact started to look for other phones, then i saw that cyanogenmod are adding support for this phone, and its getting pretty close. So i was wondering, will these isues that people are having, be resolved in cyanogenmod?
The reason i am looking for the optimus 2x, is because its only a 4", i think 4.3" is a bit to big, also if cyanogenmod is coming, and all the "isues" are solved with the phone i really thing this could be a nice phone that should be able to run icecream pretty good aswell, so it wont be outdated in ½ year.
oh, also its on sale atm.. should i strike or wait?

I think most of the issues are software issues and are getting fixed piece by piece. The real hardware issue, you sent the phone for warrenty.....
So I would go for the O2X. I have it since day one, and only Issue I had since then that the phone powerd off like 3 times. 3 Times in 2/3 months is ok for me Since the update it hasn't powerd itself off yet.

I was a HTC user. Almost all the smarthphones i've owned were from HTC.
All the HTC phones I've rooted. Not cause of custom roms or whatever.
Just some setting changes etc...
The O2X I havn't rooted yet. Why? Cause it works as it should work.
On the first stock rom I could get 1.5/2 days out of the battery. And even got 4 days (disabled internet). And now with the new rom I get one day. So that is also a software thing. But still I don't see the need of rooting the phone.
The phone works very good out of the box.

i am comming from a htc desire, that is running cyanogenmod, and tbh i wouldent be able to live with anything else, than that or a clean android experience.
For those, who are considering to buy O2X, my advice it to wait till gingerbread update is released. The phone is a promising one and I also think most of the problems described here, are software related. The UI is quite laggy sometimes, some people have reboot/battery drain/low incall quality etc. So w8 til gingerbread arrives.

I agree with you. Wait for Gingerbread. If this update will not resolve all the problems then its a ****y product.
tnx for the response, desided to wait it out and see.. TBH unless the cm version for it, is bad, or anything like that, i would probaly buy it. I dont plan on running a stock rom any way, i am considering it just because there is cm for it

TBH it's a ****ty product for now and hopefully new firmwares will fix it; for now it's a strange and very picky device. I always think back to the days I just got my HTC Hero; that device only got "fixed" due to paul 'o brien and the cyanogenmod team otherwise i had been selling it a long time ago. Still got the hero though and recently flashed one of the latest oxygen roms on it and it actually amazed me how solid and fast it was; that is one of the beauties of these kind of phones; the communities behind it fixing things.

But as long the HW isent "bad" or there are isues with the hardware, i dont see why the phone wouldt be a good buy, as long you know, you need to root and mod it, in order to get a prober phone.
after all the tmobile version runs pretty good i am told, so its more or less software isues?

The stock android experience on the tmobile version still has some of the quirks we experience in the rest of the world, but even with the LG crapware software layer it can be an awesome phone but just don't treat it as a normal android phone; leave the LG crap in place and build on top of it or your phone will reboot/hang/go black (in my experience)

so just to be clear, if i remove all the lg crapware, the phone will run badly ?i thought it was the other way around.
As things stand OP, I just wouldn't bother with this phone...
Had it nearly a month now.. fantastic hardware but the software sucks big time. Super slow and battery life sucks (probably due to software).
Thoughts of waiting for Gingerbread are all well, but LG managed to screw up the current software so well that I have complete faith that they will also screw up that too.
In a couple of months the Galaxy S2 will be out followed a bit later by the Atrix.. I dare say they won't be perfect but I don't think they can be as bad as LG's "effort"..
I really wish I had a HTC Desire, a 2 year old phone over my O2X...
Don't get me wrong, I love Android to pieces, but IMHO if Google can't sort out the mess that too many manufacturers are making of their OS by sticking their own crap on top and making it awful... it'll just push people towards Apple (who I hate). The man in the street just wants a phone that works and doesn't want to be messing around with custom roms etc.
This phone needs a lot of work to make it useable. Out of the box, this phone was crap, battery died within 10 hours, hanged 2-3 times when charging and browsing and needed to take out the battery.
I have some spare time this weekend and finally tried the vanilla rom from paul. It works perfect! No lg crapware, just pure google.
I'm using opera for my browser, listen to music for 4-5 hours with poweramp, downloaded some apps, play samurai 2, and the battery finally died after 30 hours!
Hello,
I have been reading this forum in the past few days but I still can not decide what smartphone should I buy for my birthday which is in about 2 weeks.
To be honest I have never owned a smartphone before, so when I decided to get one recently, I thought it might be better start off with a medium category Samsung Galaxy Ace for about 135 EUR (discounted price as a loyal sub-er).
However, after some further readings I realised it might be better to get a premium category O2X for about 270 EUR (with the same discount), since it will not outdate as fast as SGA, so probably I can use it for 2-3 years while SGA has already lesser apps and its slower processor will be outdated relatively soon. I do not intend to buy any new phone for 2-3 years after I get one now.
Also as a newbie, I think it will take me some time to get familiar with android features so waiting for updates should not be an issue for me (having the freezes and Gingerbread in mind).
As it stands now, O2X seems to be a better investment for me for the long term, but as I have no experience wiht smartphones at all I would like to hear your opinion as well - thanks in advance.

those here that can cope with the o2x know what we've been talking about. How does a fresh one fit in?
- need 2x day on a battery?
don't go near android (but it can be done)
- need an ios like expeience?
the o2x is a no go; you're better of with a high end htc phone
- cutting edge?
the o2x could be it; for now the nexus 1 and nexus S are a better choice
- UX
sense -> go htc! or maybe Sony/Eric
- the most powerfull phone
hey this could be it, for 4 months
You should buy it, cuz it hasent locked bootloader and it very easy phone for the developers, so there will be very good roms, and btw. CM7 is on the way :=)

Thanks for feedback.
The problem is that my provider currently sells 3 types of HTC: Wildfire, Desire and Desire HD. HTC DHD would cost 430 EUR which seems too much for me, normal desire would cost nearly as much as O2X.
Also nexus phones are not avaliable at my provider and there are only 3 types of Xperias avaliable from S/E which I dont really like.
I am kinda bound to my current provider so I do not think I have too many possibilities..

[Q] does anyone have this phone?

It seems like nothings happening with this phone and I dont know if I should buy it, because if I cant root it or do anything with it its just not as fun? so does anyone know how to root this phone and flash roms on it etc etc?
my gf bought this phone
i'm just waiting for someone to come up with a way to s-off and root it so that i can move apps for her
it's irritating cause only some apps can be moved in its current config
hoping someone comes up with something soon
my gf thinking to buy a salsa, it seems a nice phone, however based on what u people's comments, the biggest problem is internal memory! so would u people recommand salsa or Nexus S?

NexusS is FAR superior (Hummingbird ARMv7,powerVR sgx540 GPU, MUCH more internal memory, community support, development....).. the thing in my case, is that my GF was on a x10mini pro before and find nexus S huge.. She wanted something small and didn't care about performance (as probably anything would be better than her previous x10minipro) .. As I have a desire she thought HTC are well built and bought this one..
As I said on another post, besides internal memory I think it is a good smartphone, but if your gf doesn't mind size.. then go nexusS.. you/she won't regret.
thanks man, very useful....I am using DHD and I would recommend my gf of Nexus s,and if she wants, i can get it root which not gonna happen on Salsa.

I have this phone as well. Overall, it's actually a pretty decent phone. Performance, size, speed, etc are all mid-range quality and I do love the smaller size.
The only down side to this phone as has been mentioned is the limited internal memory. I'm just waiting on a method of rooting so I can get rid of all the useless bloatware and move the rest of the apps over to the SD card. The phone comes with 512 mb of memory but on my particular phone here in Taiwan, after the OS install, and all the bloat ware I have around 120mb to work with. Between email, contacts, and like 4 apps. I'm out of space and can't do anything else. It's very frustrating.

What to go for?

Now i have the lg optimus 2x but I'm not happy with it. I change roms once at week, many times I have to reinstall all the apps and restore stuff from backups. I decided that I'm not happy with it and I decided to go on and change the lg phone.
I want to say thanks to all the developers that made this damned phone a little better and helped a lot with it.
Max budget is 1000euro so I think that most of the android phones are inside the budget. What do you think is the best choice on the market right now?
What I am looking at the moment in a phone is:
At least 12 hours battery with medium wifi use, always enabled data connection and like 30 minute calls during the day;
I want it to be fluid and fast, I don't want to experience freeze because I'm out of ram;
I would like a good camera, I really like taking pictures and making videos but lets say that the camera quality from the o2x really dissapointed me, the video quality was really too low to be considered hd;
The display max size I think that about 5" is enough and I want to be able to use it in the sunlight without problems;
Well, that's it. What do you guys suggest me? Which phone would be your choice? There are many models on the market right now apparently with similar hardware but which one you think is the best to do what I want to do? You think I should wait and see what the Galaxy s3 will offer or you think that it cannot offer more than the others are offering right now?
Please, don't suggest me to buy an LG, I don't even want to think about it
Thank you for your help!
If I had a 1000 euro budget for a phone I would buy an LG and save the other 700 eur for... I don't know... condoms?
Now, seriously, best of luck to you.
I wonder if this is also a case for PG "the thread closer" 101.
I really have no idea what to think of. With so many phones everyday I am a bit confused!!!
If you really want a beast phone, go for the HTC One X. Quad-core and great performance. Also the dev support for the HTC is quite good. But, you need to wait, I don't think it's released yet...
I say wait for Galaxy S III or Lg Optimus 4x HD.
Not a HTC fan but ONE X is one great phone.

On seeing the probs u hav with your phone, i can say that you maybe my twin-bro... i have nearly same problems with each new fone i got...
I always regarded the 2 birds in the bush to be better than one in hand....
One day i read a person's comment on a post(similar to this one - started by me) that no one and nothing is perfect - if they have got a problem or two, learn to live with them, adjustment- a machine can't, but you can....
IMO- there is no need to get a quad core or huge screen or better camera coz one day or other they will get old.Don't get me wrong - i dont suggest to use a nokia 1110, change but only if necessary.....
But still coz you need suggestions, i will suggest nothing other than galaxy note- easily gives 18hrs+ usage if used extensively
And best of luck for your choice
