Captivate powers off when plugged in and does not charge - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Captivate turns off instantly when plugged in and does not charge. It will also not turn back on after having been plugged in. I have to take the battery out and plug it back in to get it turn power on. It will not boot into download mode either. It seems as though the charger port may be fried. Does anyone have any experience and can help out with this?
I um unable to charge the phone now and have less than 30% battery life.

Haven't personally had any probs like this with my captivate, but i can highly recommend mobiletechvideos.com for the repair/replacement of the micro usb port if that ends up being the problem.

It is the micro usb port. I just don't know where to go to get it fixed. I personally don't have a solderer or even know how to use one.

Check it out... http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-captivate-usb-port-repair/
Very reputible and fast service. Highly respected here at XDA.

Thanks. I checked it out. I found a smart phome repair shop in my town that does repairs on my particular model. I am going to check them out first. If they can't fix it I will send it in to MobileTechVideos. Thank you so much for your help. I am very new to XDA and to android development. It's nice to have people willing to help.

[Q] Dead USB Port?

My captivate appears to have a dead USB port. No connection, no charging. No warranty either.
I have disassembled and cleaned it as best I could.
Tried multiple USB cables, both to PCs and chargers.
Did a factory reset.
Otherwise phone is 100% functional.
Any other ideas?
Can anyone recommend a reputable repair service?
Should I just buy one with a busted screen and frankenstien one between the two?
Take it back, its under warranty.
How is it under warranty. If he posted that its not.

I guess it came out like August? Then it would be less than a year. Right on

Well, it may be by time, but I bought it off e-bay. Will ATT still honor the warranty? Hasn't been wet.
If not. Samsung will.

Here is the whole story....
My phone is on a LARGE corporate account. We get a Windows Mobile phone with it. I wanted something else, so I bought the Samsung off E-bay last fall and put my SIM card in it.
It is an ATT branded phone. What are the chances they would warranty it if I just walked in and told them that my USB port was dead?
Just called att, and they are replacing it. Just need to get the billing address for my account. I guess I just assumed they would not warranty it. Kudos to them.

Just flash to stock. Send it in. We can help with any software problems, but everybody's phone is covered for hardware.
Oh, good point. It's rooted and Froyo....
Ok, so a quick look around didn't reveal a way to go back to stock without USB. Any ideas or pointers?
Ooh good point. I've seen people ask about a flashable stock but don't recall seeing one. Maybe change the title of this thread and update op with question. I can see it being ok to send in with custom rom and not being ok. If all else fails, flash a version of cog and delete super user and all other apps that he includes that need root. Then copy over a stock boot and shutdown animation.
I think I am just going to do a master reset and send it back. We have thousands of ATT phones on our account and I don't think they will care.
Replacement phone will be here Wed.
HUGE thanks to everyone who encouraged me and pointed out the foolishness in not trying to warranty it. If not for that, I would have just dealt with it.

The jig does not work or the button combos and the phone heats up when charged and there is no display
Also is my battery fried?
If u have no signs of life at all (even when charging) then u r hard bricked.
If u r on a computer lookin at this then check my signature below for links to get it repaired.

Yeah, if nothing works, then it's a hard brick. You will need to get the phone jtagged. Mobiletechvideos offer this service, and from what I heard, they are really good.

Yes, I recall hearing that jtag is $40 and unbrickablemod is $45. I recommend the latter over jtag because you will never have to worry/pay to fix it again

Broken mobo/USB port

OK. So my friends Captivate had the loose USB port problem. Well apparently they snapped the end piece or the mother board and the USB is half attached and then half not where the mobo is no longer there. Phone works fine, but it thinks headset is always in "with no headset sound" and only system sounds on speaker. Sound about fixed so there is speaker again.....but its been bestowed upon me to fix. I have a 25-30watt solder gun. Will it be just as simple as soldering board back together. As for the USB port itself I can't find and vids or pics on specifically how its supposed to attach. It has long pins that are longer than the groove/hole/indents provides. Something about pads missing. I'm not sure.

Don't they just want you to send it in? The only thing that really confuses me is how the port gets positioned again.

It's one guy, Josh. Can always try to ask him.
Also, there's a complete captivate teardown on here with pictures, that might help you.

Update so far still waiting on response. Soldering the mobo should be simple. It's just the way the usb port needs to settle back in that confuses me. I think I saw somewhere there are pads and that's why the prongs are deeper than the grooves they go in

Droid 4 will not boot

Hello
My dads Droid 4 is rooted running JB. I have safe strap installed. One day he took the phone out of his pocket and the screen was off. He gave me the phone to work on but I still cannot get it to boot. It turns on when the wall charger is plugged into it but comes up with either 5%-100% battery or a question mark within a battery. I can sometimes get it to boot into safe strap but that's it. I was wondering if anybody has any insight of what is wrong or knows how they can help me fix this issue. Thanks for reading!!
Sorry but looks like you'll need to do this the painful way

You'll have to SBF back to stock JB. I think you have the same problem my old LG Ally had. It's a random softbrick, unless I'm wrong. The cure is to SBF back to stock JB using a Windows machine.

Ah I see, I suppose you'll need a Motorola factory cable attachment from Team Black Hat. I made a factory cable myself with the aid of a friend who knew how to solder, but it was a little unnerving - if we messed up, would have fried the phone and computer. Anyway, get the attachment, and it should charge fine from the compute, plus you'll be able to SBF.

Thanks for the recommendation, but one point that I need to clarify is that the TBH Factory Adapter or cable will not charge the device at all.
It bypasses the battery and charging circuit altogether and powers the device directly from the USB.
This is an important distinction to make and it means that the device will always power on and boot no matter what, with or without a battery, and allow you to flash it with RSD Lite or fastboot or manually fix whatever problem was preventing it from booting and charging normally.
Then, once fixed, it will be able to boot and charge properly.
It will never charge when the factory cable/adapter is attached and for non removable battery devices like the D4 it will actually immediately power off the device when the USB cable is disconnected.
Good luck with your phone and congrats on fixing it yourself.
We think the adapters are a much safer and inexpensive solution for most users and believe everyone who mods their Motorola device should have one...before the need arises to actually use it!
So I made a cable and sbf the phone...still comes up with the battery with the X in the middle... Guessing its the battery that's bad? Not too sure

[HELP]USB port/Charging port is not functioning?

Anybody out there knows how to solve my problem, my phone's usb port or charging port is not funtioning, I try to charge with my moto charger but no response, but when I try my charger to charge other devices, there's no problem, it do charging, what should I do? Does my usb port/charging port is brick/damage??
Sent from my SCH-I800 using xda premium
Have you tried other cables with your phone? For a while I had charging issues with my original cable... I had to position the cable at almost an angle to get the contacts to connect. Then I decided I was tired of having a phone that didn't always charge at night so I got a new Staples brand cable and had no issues since. So point is try a different cable to see if the problem is your phone's hardware or the cable's.

Thank you for the suggestion but I already try other usb cable, but still no response. Maybe I'll go to a technician to see if what happens to it.

Chances are the soldered contacts broke. Hope it didn't pull up any of the PCB board then theres no fix short of replacing the board. Good luck. FYI if your not a repair tech I wouldn't attempt the fix myself.
