how to flash cm10 or cm9 over ics rom? - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

how can i flash properly a cm9 or cm10 rom if i'm currently using kingdroid v7.1 and notecore kernel ???
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium

If you mean notecore kernel.. It is safe to flash roms from there as it has MMC_CAP_ERASE disabled and you can perform all the necessary wipes in order to flash the new rom

Notecore is safe but not any ics.kernel is safe to flash cm base ROM
Dont understand why op asking someone tried, why someone flash from ics when it can brick device. Just to try brick?

i'm sorry cause in a cm10 based thread i asked if it is safe to flash cm10 with notecore kernel and someone said that it's a safe kernel..So what do they mean by that? just finding a way how properly flash cm9 or cm10 if i'm on kdv7.1 ics and my kernel is notecore v13.. sorry for the misunderstanding....

i meant notekernel by gavin..

Notekernel is safe means you can safely wipe, flash CWM, can take nadroid backup/Restore on ICS ROM only.
Here in your case this safety have no concern. Notecore is TW based ICS kernel. You can't flash CM based ROM on any ICS based kernel/ROM.
To flash CM based ROM, get GB ROM/Kernel + CWM and flash CM based ROM using that.

Yes. Flash using pc odin, then root and install cwm, before flashing cm9.

That is 100% wrong,
you CAN flash CM{9,10} from a safe kernel, be it SpeedMod, franco or NoteCore, exactly the same way you can flash a TW rom from a CM kernel, as long as it's a safe kernel you can do whatever you want.
Now, if you flash NoteCore *after* you flash CM, your device won't boot, however you can always use the recovery to install a CM kernel or just a TW rom.
You do NOT need to flash a whole GB ROM, you can just flash the kernel and boot into it's recovery.
Also, you do NOT need a GB kernel or Abyss to flash anything as long as you have a safe kernel, aka SpeedMod, NoteCore, CM9/10, Thor, etc.
Your statement about flashing a whole GB ROM just to flash CM is misleading and wrong.
I still appreciate all your useful posts.
@PierreTech, it is 100% safe to wipe and install CM from NoteCore.
Steps :
0. Do a nandroid backup or a titanium backup. (optional really)
1. Reboot into recovery.
2. Do a factory reset.
3. Install CM9/10/whatever.
4. If it doesn't include google apps, make sure you have the appropriate zip file and flash it too.

Hehe dr.ketan I gotta agree this guy... You can use notecore kernel to flash any ICS custom rom... Aosp or tw.. As when you flash the rom via cwm the rom will flash its own kernel... In the case of CM9/10 the proper kernel will be flashed along with the rom overwriting notecore/speedmod..
But I can not agree the tone he does make things clear.. He could just kindly say no dude this works this way or that...
I'm sure you know way more things than me or him but in this little thing they guy its right
Enviado desde mi GT-N7000 usando Tapatalk 2

I meant no disrespect to dr.ketan, without his great guide I wouldn't have been able to root my phone.

Oh, i really dont mind. It.is possible i may not knowing everything . My opinion was just based on Instruction on cm9 thread where it is mentioned that cm based rom shudn't flash on ics based rom, and that only thing i took into reference. I never have used any custom rom so may be not aware of fact, but this also be useful if such clearification to be made on installation instruction on op of cm rom thread, as really i m feeling awkward to go against developers instruction.
Just to edit :
@life.eq.null
You finds my statement to flash full rom misleading and wrong, but actually
I already used word 'GB ROM/Kernel' to flash.
That just means either rom or kernel. I never said you need to flash only ROM. I showing you one possibility, if someone on Non rootable GB ROM, then it will not be easy task to flash Full prerooted/rootable ROM to get CWM? in that case it is niether misleading nor 100% wrong.
Now here i am copying text written on CM9 thread installation instruction
Make sure to run CM9 or an AOSP-based ROM : FLASHING FROM STOCK ICS OR ROMS BASED ON STOCK ICS WILL RESULT IN A BRICK!
Click to collapse
Now if my statement is 100% wrong. totally misleading then you should head up to developers of CM9, to edit instruction in more clear way. b'coz here ROM itself said to avoid, no instruction about to use safe kernel mentioned.
I am agree your information may be recent and experience based, even i can say may be better and useful to users who are on safe kernel. But that doesn't make older instruction wrong and misleading, when till now everybody following this instruction which is instructed by developer only.
Regards.

I think they only talk about the Kernel, not about the whole rom. I flashed many times a cm9 rom on a stock ics rom, but always AFTER flashing through CWM a safe cm9 kernel, or abyssnote4.2.
from ics stock, usually I boot to recovery, apply the cleaning script Sybr, flash my safe kernel (do not reboot, it will work now), do the 3 wipes, then flash new rom cm9 based. then reboot.

[Q] Is it safe to flash a gb cf root kernel on ics?

Hey Guys! Just needed a bit of help. Is it safe to flash a gn cf root kernel on stock or custom ICS rom?? Like, will I be safe from the superbrick bug if I flash a gb kernel over an ICS one? Any Help will be appreciated! Thanx in advance!
P.S I am sorry if the question is asked before..
its hit and miss really, Some users report that CF root kernel is safe, others say its not.
One kernel confirmed to be safe is Abyss
They have one for GB and one for ICS
Abyss - ICS https://dl.dropbox.com/u/69014495/AbyssNotekernel42CWTouchOriginalLogo.zip

So if I flash Abyss Note kernel, I am safe from the superbrick bug? But won't the device be already damaged if I flash stock ICS? And also if I use factory reset from recovery or other superbrick commands, will my device get damaged? Sorry for the Q's!
If you flash an Abyss GB kernel for stock ICS (or ICS at all) it won't boot (or give a lot of errors IF it does).
Just use Speedmod or Franco kernels for stock ICS. They are safe.

You are never completely safe from the superbrick, But with abyss, and as said above speedmod (what i use) the command that causes the brick is disabled, So providing you only ever do a full wipe on a KNOWN SAFE KERNEL you will be fine.
There are a few safe kernels now, Im unsure of them all as ive only ever used speedmod & abyss, Feel free to use another one, Just be sure to check if its safe or not.
The bug is in the chip, But the command to trigger the bug is in the ICS kernel, Hence why GB is the ultimate safe option.
Thank you very much guys! I guess that I'll stay on GB till a stable ICS comes out!I really wanted to try the cool mods for ICS! But are you sure that if I use speedmod Wiping or Restoring won't brick my note?
Well no can can confirm 100% that you wont get a brick, Although the chances of that happening on a safe kernel is minimal.
As with all modding you do it at your own risk, I can confirm i have successfully done a full wipe in CWM using both SpeedMod and Abyss kernel, So have 100's of other users too ! So you should be fine
I had doubts at first, So i upgraded to ICS via ODIN without wiping, never had any issues.

Abyss kernel and CM9 ROM
thanks a lot every one.... a lot of info floating around...
but there a re a few questions im not sure about.... i hope if you can help answer them....
1. i checked my GN ICS 4.0.3 rooted stock and it has the chipset known to have emmc bug issue.. so now if I flash using the abyss kernel it should be fine. But do i need to flash it with a ICS ROM only or can I flash it with a pre rooted GB ROM as well?
2. I understand there are two versions of Abyss Kernel. One for ICS and one for GB. Which do i install if i plan to move to GB from ICS official stock? and vice-versa?
3. Is it safe to directly move from rooted stock ICS 4.0.3 to CM9? using Abyss kernel?
4. Just one las thing. When we flash a kernel like Abyss to ensure non bricking, does it mean that the new ROM would use the same kernel (Abyss) ? or would it install its own kernel? For example if i flash Abyss and then flash CM9 ROM, will CM9 use Abyss as the system kernel or will it install its own kernel?
Sorry for asking soo many dumb questions, but i want to get my facts right before i flash.
Thanks in advance.
Just flash abyss kerne if u want flashing any rom with CWMR..

here you go...

read all on that thread bud before you do some actions.
Abyss is a gb kernel, it's useful for doing quick flashing under ics as it's already rooted with cwm baked in. But yeah, I you can't run a ics rom under abyss, but you can install abyss, run wipes, then install ics rom and kernel all in one.

[Q] Going from LQ3 + Speedmod to ParanoidAndroid

Hi all,
I am on LQ3 with Speedmod K3 Kernel and root.
If I want to try out ParanoidAndroid, is it possible to flash a CM9 kernel (like T**r) via CWM, then flash PA (and then wipe both caches and full reset)?
Or, do I still need to flash a GB rom and kernel and then flash PA?
I think the reason for flashing to GB is because CWM is not safe on the stock ICS kernel, but since I'm on Speedmod, that isn't a problem for me.
Or, is there another reason you need to go back to GB?
thanks,
Rich.

The Devs post those instructions for a reason dude. They have tested the methods and only then posted those instructions. If there is a shorter way, they would have surely posted that instead of the longer roundabout way. Also, I think there was a post somewhere mentioning not to go to the CM9 kernel straight from LQ3....but I've forgotten where it was/is .
Best way is to go back to GB and then flash PA---15 minutes extra vs risking bricking your phone----you do the math

Can anyone help a noob here?

Hi All
Am still trying to get my head around flashing FROM An ICS Custom Rom to a JB Custom Rom.
I have read lots of posts about this.
I am currently on CrashRom V12 and HydraCore Latest safe kernel, but want to try Paranoid JB Rom or similar. When i read
the OP Instructions its always says
Make sure to run CM9 or an AOSP-based ROM : FLASHING FROM STOCK ICS OR ROMS BASED ON STOCK ICS WILL RESULT IN A BRICK!
Can anyone explain what this means, because i thought if i was on a safe kernel I could flash any Custom Rom be it ICS or JB,
obviously after doing all the wipes in CWM???

[Q] Flash safe kernel before and after flashing rom?

Hey everybody.. Finally i got some strength to flash rom on my SGN.After going thru bunch of posts i got that sgn is affected with brick bug.
So i followed Philz guide about flashing Philz kernel. I have some confusion that

Also,Is Philz kernel compatable with all types of ROM available for SGN? If not then which kernel?

What ROM have you flashed exactly? Philz kernel is only compatible with Samsung (Touchwiz) Roms. If you have flashed a new ROM chances you are using the built-in kernel.
See...if you have read carefully then you have noticed that the brickbug is present in ics only.brickbug isnt present in gb.and for jb i am not sure....
As far as philz kernel is concerned it is based on touch and present for ics and jb.

You don't need to flash the kernel after flashing the Custom roms, since almost all custom roms will have safe kernel with them.. on the other hand, you will have to flash a safe kernel after flashing the rom, if you are flashing a stock ICS rom..
What if custom rom doesnt come with a safe kernel?
There aren't generalized rules covering all scenarios. You'll have to mention from which rom you are going to which rom.

keep alternative tar file of a safe kernel compatible with your present rom on sd card and then flash it through mobile odin - this method of switch over is safe
those unsafe kernels have certain distinct plus points, thats why the devs put them in custom roms and if you are an expert and can handle them ......surf on them and feel the difference...... (not for newbies and noobs)

this is how i flash my galaxy note but im not saying its how u should do it: i usually have the rom in my sd card cmw as well as well as superuser. then i flash cmw and then super user..reboot system..after being rooted i then flash a safe kernel after flashing i reboot recovery which is the new kernel recovery ..there i wipe and clean everything..then i flash rom..so to answer your question, i would say flash safe kernel before flashing rom as most roms require a clean install for better performance
good luck..oh i am also a noob..running alliance rom 1.1

To answer your question, if you need to flash a kernel, it needs to be done BEFORE you do any wipes.
If you flash a custom rom, chances are it comes with a custom kernel as people have mentioned. Mostly, these are safe. But to be sure, make sure that you have flashed a custom kernel and rebooted to recovery before you wipe. If this concerns you greatly, then follow the advice in Dr. Ketan's excellent rooting thread, and install the stock rooted Gingerbread rom provided there. This has a stock kernel, but as it is Gingerbread, it is completely safe to wipe. You can then go and flash whatever you want on top.

[Q] Help with my Galaxy Note

Hi, I need help with my Galaxy Note. I just buy secondhand Galaxy Note, it has XXLS2 4.1.1 rom for now. I want flash AOSPA 4.2.1 rom on it. My previous phone was HTC HD2, so I'm used to flashing without limitation So, I need your help to tell me if I'm thing good about it. So, firstly I must flash Philz kernel for my phone, to get root and recovery. But for my rom is only version 2.7... is it safe to flash? And next I can just do full wipe, reboot, and flash AOSPA 4.2.1 rom, yes?
You won't be able to flash a aokp rom using philz 2.7 as it will not install and error 7.
-Install Philz and gain root and cwm
-Then place all the required files to flash the rom to storage.
-Then flash a different safe kernel like hydracore or cm kernel.
-Boot into recovery and do wipes and formats and flash. the rom. (while on a different kernel you might not be able to boot into the rom. Just recovery)
And version 2.7 is safe? Why there is no 3.99 version for this rom? But when I finally flash PA rom, I can stay with kernel included in this rom? Or I need to flash cm kernel second time? I'm going to make backup before flashing new rom, but I'm just wondering if I can normally recover this on PA rom or I need to flash stock philz kernel before restoring... So the "diffrent safe" kernel may be "Kernel_CM10.1_20130126_Nightly_CWM.zip", yes? It will work with aosp based pa rom? I'm going to flash 2.99 version...

Yes 2.7 is safe. Just that it cannot install some roms.
Because it's and old kernel.
Yes stay with the kernel included in the rom
Yes PA has a safe kernel and the backup can be restored.
Any kernel like hydracore or cm will do.
Also 2.99 PA might not to that's stable. So.. Your choice. You can use and older version like 2.57 as well
Actually Philz 2.7 is ICS/older JB, and therefore not subject to error 7. Good to wipe and Flash ROMs with. (It's safe too)
