I won in a competition an unlocked Galaxy Note in the UK.
It came with Gingerbread .. I then managed to do an official Samsung Update to 4.0.3 ICS
But after the upgrade I found the battery life really poor - so in the end decided to root the phone.
I rooted the phone so I could reset my Battery Stats and also remove the Weather App and Yahoo Finance! which were both build into the phone. The weather app in particular seemed to be using a lot of battery so I got rid f it.
I've now done a full reset and see that the phone seems to be reset and Yahoo Finance and Weather Apps are still gone, I can see that SuperSU also remains.
I've installed the Got BickBug App and it tells m This eMMC chip is known to have the brick bug.
Is it safe to do an OTA update from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4 now that I've reset the phone, even though Weather App and Yahoo! Finance are goe or will this create added issues when upgrading to 4.0.4? I can see when I press on Software Update it begins to star downloading an update over the WiFi but I stopped the download before it finished so I could post on here and seek advise as to the safety of the upgrade
Any thoughts as to the safety of upgrading to 4.0.4?
Yea it is safe to perform over OTA, but question is that if anything goes wrong then it will be dangerous for you to wipe anything on stock ICS.
-Your removed stuff may or may not appear back depends on update, same way your root may or may not remain intact aftet update.
-Your idea about removing some bloatware to improve battery life is on debate, I dont understand any application which you never use and remain in just background process, can drain remarkable juice. If all bloatware you remove even then i dont think you may get benefit of more thn 2 % of juice in full complete cycle of 100%
-So simple solution is you are having safe kernel then update using mobile odin, or if you have safe kernel wipe before flashing new ICS, then flash ICS with PC odin and reflashing safe kernel again.
Choice is yours.

According to the battery info in the Android Os it was reporting weather App using upto 5% of my battery and always seems to be running in the background ...
Anyway I tried an TOA (Over the Air) Update and it downloaded fine, restarted itself and appeared to be installing but quickly existed and when back into the operating system with a message saying update failed.
I've read somewhere that possibly having installed BusyBox prior may affect OTA Updates and stop them from working.
You may have selected to show whether on desktop or lockscreen, remove it, then it won't drain.

You can try PC KIES as well, just install PC KIES in your PC, plug your phone and Kies will detect and update your phone with a breeze.

Also.. after the update the superuser app is still installed and appears that root is still there. Any thoughts?

You have to unroot before you can do a ota upgrade. Rooting is suppose to block ota upgrades because a ota upgrade would remove superuser.
I read somewhere that people have had to flash back to complete original. I've rooted and removed AT&T crapware. Also, being new to the Android platform I need some guidance on how to go back to factory orig. I've heard of odin.. but base on my limited research I haven't seen if it is available to mac. I am familiar with Unix/Linux.. they are my primary OS'.. but messing with a phone OS is just a different animal altogether.
I had to redo the phone but the update never showed up.. So what I did was just flash the update from samfirmware and it is working even though I have to redo everything...

My phone is rooted and I updated without issue.
Well i just tred to update mine this morning, i finally got past the communication errors. The download went fine, but when it was installing it went from 0 to 50% percent in about a second and then said update failed and rebooted.
I'm on the stock JF6 rom, however i used odin to get there.
My Sim card and sd were left in, however my sd is blank
And i don't know what any other info i can post to be helpful
2.1 update
just did the update with one click root loaded.went though with no problems phone is faster with less lag.also i can still use as wi fi hot spot. new Quikoffice,Media hub,Mobile Video and you tube. well this may mean no 2.2?
I also did the ota update with root installed, allowed 3rd apps, with wireless tethering, and it went through fine for me but I still have poor gps, did not seem to do anything for the gps except removed the option to enter lbs test mode. Anyone know how to get to the lbs test mode after update?
Samsung Mini-Kies Updater
If anyone is having troubles with Mini Kies (I had the problem where the application crashed, using Win 7 x64), I'd recommend using the regular Samsung Kies application. I was unable to do the JH7 update even after restoring to complete stock with Odin (50% update failed error). This was easy, and now I am fully in JH7, and so far the GPS lock is much, much faster.
I have a new (2weeks) samsung GT-I9003 which kies report a new firmware update & before doing that want me to take backup but it will only backup my contacts/sms etc. how do I backup my installed apps as I have not yet rooted my phone, I searched the forums & found a way to root but got to know that even rooting will loose my apps/data so what should I do first?
I need the following things
I am testing various apps to find the best ones which I will using long term so as of now lot of install/uninstall hapening, after few days once I settle I want to update new firmware but should I root before that or after updating to new firmware.
Does rooting remains rooted after new FW updates in future?
Once rooted I can install apps like Titanium, unrooted I can't use Titanium yet to back up my apps & its data so its a catch 22 situation for me & atleast once I will have to loose my apps data but this time I should do it once for all so I can streamline future updates.
Hope some one can answer this.
If you update with kies you wont loose anything, if you update custom roms(for the first time) you will loose your apps and data.
Thats a good news for me, so should I 1st update the firmware via kies then root it as 2nd step?
I took backup & then started the firmware update, it downloaded a small file showed 100% complete & then strangely it opened another windows & its now downloading a huge file of 400-500Mb...........is the firmware that big?
The downloading is going on past 10 mins on 1mbps connection.
Finally it gave error in mid way I assume that something happened & made the usb connection loss, I got these screen shots & the phone is now hung displaying "downloading do not turn off the target"
What should I do, need help?
Since i did not get any answer i took the battery out & then plugged in again the phone booted fine.
I now have rooted my phone, if i update the firmware will I need to root it again?

depends on the firmware, most custom roms have root already build in
Hello, Gentlemen.
I bought a Note in early November and, being a fresh immigrant to the land of Android from Maemo, the first thing I did was install Titanium backup and clean out all of the Samsung bloatware. Stupidly, I uninstalled Kies in this way, and so have never been able to perform an OTA update. The updates download and apparently install, then the device restarts and tells me that the update has failed.
I hadn't bothered fixing it before now as the updates have been minor, but I want to get this fixed in time for the ICS release
How, then, will I reset my Note to factory condition and start anew? Is this even necessary?
if i'm not mistakes, once you phone is rooted you wont be able to update via kies.
happened to me on my Galaxy Tab 10.1, i'm unable to update from HC3.1 to HC3.2.
Just use custom rom instead.
Welcome to Android Mate, You've made the right choice.
Yeah, You can go back to Ground Zero Stock, Untouched. But That is not really necessary. All Stock ROMS get leaked or released anyway. But If you insist, You may Read the Guide here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997

You'll get ICS here at XDA at least a month before Samsung sees fit to grace you with OTA, so I wouldn't bother with Kies if I were you.
You're in better hands here.
Hi All,
I have spent all morning Googling this and I may be wrong but I cannot find where on the Galaxy Note GT-N7000. Where does the OTA Update get stored. How can I then take that Update and use Modin to keep root?
If this has been answered elsewhere I apologies in advance but I want the ICS goodness.
Cheers:cyclops:
Generally the only way that you have to update and connect the device to your computer and synchronize it with the Samsung Kies, but if you upgrade through that will make you lose hopelessly all root permissions.
If there appears the yellow triangle at the beginning of the system, to upgrade that you are about to make will eliminate the triangle, but does not reset the counter. You notice that the firmware upgrade does not result in a deletion of data or applications in your possession. Then first unwind in the the last firmware , Now you need install program Mobile Odin Pro, I am sorry there was also a free version but now is no longer available, to find it you have to try in other market alternatives. As you are now, you can also have the known stand-alone usb connection, but it is important to check if you have enough autonomy (50 % is more than enough) to enable you to flash the rom.
Ok, now proceed with the implementation of the option Flash firmware.
Please wait a few minutes, the Notes will restart a couple of times during the procedure, will install the firmware and to the first boot you don't have to worry if the loading will not be very shipped.
Once launched Android you will have your system up-to-date. Go into Settings -> Info on the device and make sure the version you have installed..VERIFICATION: If you do not yet have in fact, you can install the free application for Android Root Check Basic download here https://play.google.com/store/apps/...GwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5qb2V5a3JpbS5yb290Y2hlY2siXQ.. and check if the permissions are actually enabled. The result is positive if the resulting text is green, otherwise it will be red .
You can't do it.
There is chances that, if you have super SU Pro, then there is option to survival of SU while OTA. That may work, but developer syas no guarranty.
I don't have the time to constantly be looking for new roms to make my phone run properly. My phone is always freezing up due to the stupid Touchwiz UI and I absolutely hate it. I am sick and tired of my phone freezing up and lagging constantly and having to do factory reset and reinstalling all my apps fresh.
So I was wondering, what can I do to fix this problem in a easier manner? I was thinking about rooting the phone, saving all my app data, unrooting, resetting the phone, rooting again, uninstall bloatware, reinstalling apps with their data, and unrooting.
Here are my concerns though. I want to be able to reset the phone using the orignal factory reset. I don't have time or care to install new roms on my phone as I want to keep my warranty and I want to be able to sell my phone in the future.
So what are my options here? What can I do and what are my steps to start doing them?
I am on AT&T Note 3 with kitkat 4.4.2 with my build number ending in NC2.
Is the Note 3 development this bad? Not one response in a couple days. Anyone have a simple answer?
I just want to know if I can factory reset if I root my device and how I could complete unroot.

Simple answer is root with towelroot, and when you want to do a complete factory reset, flash stock NC2 using the guide in this thread.
I think your original question about what options you have is a little more complicated...rooting your phone technically voids your warranty, but if you're referring to the KNOX warranty flag then towelroot doesn't trip that flag. Reflashing stock NC2 with Odin will unroot your phone automatically so no worries there either. What I'm getting at is flashing roms isn't going to void your warranty any more than rooting with towelroot will, on the other hand uninstalling system apps can cause lots of problems, so you may find it easier to flash a near-stock rom that has the bloatware already removed.
But if you're set on not flashing anything, then I'd suggest using titanium backup to freeze any apps you don't want instead of uninstalling them. If you uninstall the wrong app you could end up having to do a factory reset anyway just to get your phone working again. Freezing system apps can cause problems too but it's generally easier to unfreeze an app than try and find and reinstall a system apk. And as tempting as it is don't uninstall My Magazine you'll get FC all over the place and your email won't work properly
So if I install that stock rom, would I be able to update my phone using the internal updater? I just want to be able to install Android 5.0 when/if it comes out for the Note 3. Seeing how AT&T note 3 has little to no roms to install. Very disappointing.
The Odin files in that thread are for stock NC2 and unless you flashed a rom after your second post you're still on stock...it's the exact same AT&T stock build...flashing it won't really benefit you at all unless you rooted and made changes to your system. I assume by internal updater you mean the OTA updates that get pushed out from AT&T then yes since that is the official AT&T build if you flash it you will still get those updates provided AT&T is your carrier. There may not be a lot of roms but the ones we have are great I'd encourage you to try one or two there are a couple "debloated" stock roms I think would give you what you're looking for in terms of stability but of course it's up to you if you just want to stay stock

Wow... just... wow.
This POST is disappointing.
I'm on the same boat as you OP. When time comes for a new phone, my next phone will never be another Samsung phone again. I will only consider phones that are close to stock. Most likely Motorola X or Sony Z3 Compact or similar.
TouchWiz is so disappointing. It's slow and creates lags even for just checking what time it is.
Fortunately I have some time so unlike OP, I tried debloating stock rom, tried at least 5 custom roms. Most of the custom roms have either too much theme customization (really not my taste) or something else doesn't work (NFC payment or deep sleep or some other thing). And they all claim super duper fast and rock stable, but those are hyperboles. The only time I experienced one rom being faster than the other was with Galaxy S5 port rom, but that was most likely due to the fact that standby mode is disabled because we have no way to update the firmware. In other words, uses more battery but still lasts a day. Also, I never seen the battery last exceptionally longer than the stock rom, so don't trust the super long lasting battery claims.
The easiest way to get your phone run smoothly is to factory reset it, and then only install select apps that you really need and know that it won't be a resource hog reporting your every move.
Oh, and last year's Moto X (dual core) feels faster than a quad core Note3 for everyday task in my hands. I wish we had a google experience rom for n900a.

UR Droid is probably the closest to stock...Knox removed, sd card write permissions fixed, etc. are the only mods...that said carl's made a ton of flashable zips too so if you did want to start making mods yourself chances are you won't have any problems while running his rom
FireKat is one you've probably run across. That is a stock rom all of the mods/optimizations/etc mega makes are from other stock builds. There's no theming or anything like that it's more like "TouchWiz optimized"...again nothing extraneous added if you want to add tethering, call recording, etc you'll have to do it yourself. FireKat is geared towards speed and battery life but it's rock solid with no known issues. All of the rom updates you see are for performance improvements as opposed to the majority of the aosp-hybrid or heavily themed roms where updates are for bug fixes.
Both devs are really helpful and responsive definitely check out their threads though since I'm not up to date with both roms. I have flashed both of them at some point and both are significant improvements over stock...of course no one can tell you what roms you'll like or should flash but I'd be pretty surprised if you have a better experience on stock than either of these roms.
I've been running a stock rooted 4.4.2 for months and it was not laggy at all.
In the application manager settings I turned off all bloatware apps that I did not use. I froze (with titanium backup) all bloatware that could not be turned off in settings and also froze anything that says "knox" in the title. I used xposed installer to install many modules that allowed me to tweak my stock rom... including greenify to auto hibernate apps, smart booster to manage ram, boot manager, and also Wanam xposed for ui customizing...
My phone has run extremely well.
I just made the jump to 4.4.4 and got it rooted (thanks to @muniz_ri and a few others).... exact same setup again... stock rooted... turn off and freeze un-needed apps... xposed modules... and again it is running nice and smooth.
I also use nova launcher prime because it feels more responsive and does more things that I want (like a home screen that will autorotate to landscape mode).
Wow, that's a lot to have for being stock .
The only way to get rid most of your concerns is to root your phone. Then you can delete all other useless apps that you don't need and slow your phone down a bit.
But installing a new Rom is the best way to have a peace in mind I think. Dynamic KitKat is one of the best roms for our phone. I've been using it for months and there is nothing I can say how much I like it. Sometimes I experience lag, but that is to be expected because of Android's ability to do multitasks.
Just my 2 cents.
