I'm a SPB user currently and have just installed TSF as my shell and I'm hoping to get some input from this awesome community about either running on the Captivate.
My current phone info is:
Overclocked to run at Max 1.4Ghz
Devil Kernel
Euroskank ROM
I should start by saying I'm completely happy with the way SPB ran on my phone but wanted to see a alternative shell just in case I wasn't getting the max "impress myself and friends" factor. Ok, so the interface to TSF takes some getting used to, that I've figured out. It's different which appeals to me in general. Both shells are really nice on the eyes. Both seem to perform fantastic on my Captivate. After installing a nice theme and the widgets for TSF I'm even more impressed. But still, I find it hard to get around as it is much different than your standard phone interface. That's by no means a bad thing - it's just different and I can learn to adapt to it.
What I'm hoping to learn from you guys is personal opinions, tip's and even performance numbers between the two. IE, battery use, lag over time, etc.
Why do you prefer one shell over another? How long have you used said shell and what kind of problems did you run into with it? Which do you find faster/easier to use as your daily driver? Which is better IYHO for battery life? Theme, widget and plugins you use? etc.
Thanks in advance guys.
So, have anyone tried it? Is it stable?

I have recently tried both. I think TSF Shell is awesome but weird, in a good way. It is fun to play with and you can set it up to be "similar" to a normal launcher. I think it has kept me entertained just by trying different things out. I am currently using it full time and tried going back to NOVA and the smoothness of TSF completely blows NOVA away. That is also with all the eye candy turned on! I really wish the TSF devs would produce a "traditional" launcher that worked as smooth as TSF.
I think SPB Shell is also VERY nice. If I were going to recommend one to a family member that is not a "techy" type, it would be SPB. It is easier to use or faster to understand. I think SPB is really cool but not worth the money. It is not that much different than the normal launcher (just eye candy).
I have already recommended TSF to a few friends that I thought would enjoy something a little different. They both liked it a lot but feel it is more like a fancy toy that you don't play with in the dirt. They keep their NOVA or APEX as their main launchers.
Anyway...I don't think you can go wrong with either. Have fun!

both look nice but I dont think I could pay the price. I have been running Lightning Launcher for a few weeks and once I figured it out and tweaked the settings. it is simple, clean and fast.
Been a while since I asked about this, since then I've tried pretty much all the launchers out there and have been running with Nova as my daily driver for a couple of weeks now. TSF/SPB are both nice but I find the performance for Nova to be the best on my captivate. Nice, clean and runs very smoothly under hellybean.

tsf all the way! using it for 2 days now very smooth and ram is always at 450-570 mb im using SGS3
So far I really do like TSF all cause of it's advanced features... Only thing I don't like is starting from/with a clean slate of tabs, SPB was so organized and had them all set for me. Ohh well, not really a big deal, especially since SPB was locked down in a bunch of ways. LoL

Hey, this is my first time posting, I've been browsing a bit since I got my galaxy. I cant really find an answer to what I'm looking for.
I'm not a big fan of samsung's UI on my galaxy, I'd much prefer the Android 2.1 stock that comes on the nexus one... no fancy stuff. Just basic... How would I go abouts doing this? I'm totally new to this, I know I'd have to root my device, after that I'm lost.
Thanks A lot!
Some guys have created a stock Android ROM for the SGS, but it's not fully functional, no camera and no video.
Android can run on many devices (even iPhone and Palm) but the problem are the drivers. If there's no driver, you'll find yourself without camera, wifi, GPS or whatever, and possibly the battery use will be greater.
Yep, there was a vanilla rom but nothing worked, pointless for everyday use.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
So what would be your recommendation for a rom? seeing as they're are so many out there.
there are a couple of ROMS in the dev section without the touchwiz launcher
example:
[ROM]Rombie v2a -*I9000XXJPH*- Themed|no TouchWiz|Pre-Rooted|
personally i have never used one so i can't give any feedback on the matter. if you dont want to mess around too much you could always use a launcher like ADWlauncher or LauncherPro, these basically reskin the home screens to a more likeable layout (by many), there is even a home replacement called launcher2 i think, which looks very basic.
I'm looking for something similar. I'm already rooted, unlocked and running ADW, but I just can't cope with Samsung's stock phone and sms apps. They're truly bloody awful.
all i can say is: wait for http://www.cyanogenmod.com/ ...
it's great and it can not take very long any more (i hope)

You can say that again the sms app is a complete fail!!!
I don't mind the dialer so much. but the rest of touchwiz and the widgets is a waste of space..
I am a Tilt 2 user... I have been playing with alot of the different roms out there and i find them all to be very similar. I dont know what the difference is in Manilla, and Sence. I kinda fingured out what HTC messaging is... Not a big fan of it.
Here is what I am looking for:
SPEED.... when I press a button... i want it to get to that screen fast! I dont use many apps other than basic features. MMS, SMS, EMAIL, PHONE, and Camera. I do sometimes use the GPS. but not often. I could care less about the stocks feautre.
I prefer the windows threaded mesages... not the HTC one.
I do like the Facebook integration on some of the roms but that is not required.
What would you guys say is my best option at this time? Titanium?
I second this. I have never worked with a phone that is so SLOW.
I have no choice but to use this phone as it is supplied by work.
Fast rom needed.
HALP!
yes, go with the energy titanium rom, it's quite zippy if you're looking for that. but realize this phone only has a 528 processor so it still won't be all that fast if you're comparing to other people.
I realize that it wont be as fast as the 1GHz HD2 that is out now... but i just want to squeeze a bit more out of the device i already have.
The phone itself isn't slow... Bad made ROMs make it slow.
Try LBFAR or Simplicity. In my *PERSONAL* opinion they are a lot of faster then any Energy ROM.
Also they aren't bloated with crap...

Massive +1 to this. I use Simplicity myself most of the time. It's pretty light and fast. (Not to say that LBFAR isn't light or fast. It is both. It's just a little bit too psychadelically colored for me.)
Also, Jackos's ROMs are pretty nice as well, and are generally what I'm running if I am not on Simplicity. They're not built specifically for speed, but they're really well crafted and end up being faster than many other ROMs because of it. They're also rock solid. Just tossing that out there, as Jackos seems to have passed on the opportunity to toot his own horn.

I am downloading Jackos right now... if the silly file host didnt limit me to 1 file per hour i would have already had it.. but its going now. I am going to try a couple of differnt ones... as well as over clocking app.

I didn't say that he shouldn't perhaps pick a new ROM that he likes, first. But I also wouldn't call overclocking an "extreme" tool - OCT seems to work very well and my phone is 100% stable, without dynamic overclocking.
I would never recommended an overclocking tool for a new user.
Firstly, how can you be sure that the tool doesn't deal damage to the processor? It's out for just around 2 months.
Secondly, it does shorten the battery life (it may does dmg to the battery too).
Thirdly, it may cause lockups, power management problems, SoD etc.
Yes I would call the current OCT1.5 tool stable enough running at 710Mhz and yes it does speedup our devices, but I still wouldn't recommend it.

Yeah, totally valid points. I kinda fired that suggestion out off-the-cuff right before class started last night, and very obviously didn't flesh it out appropriately.
Overclocking IS an advanced tool and it does impact the stability of a device. Some handsets tolerate it much better than others, but without first having a good working understanding and feel for both the hardware and the ROM you're using, it can cause no end of frustration trying to figure out what settings work for a setup individually (it's like voodoo magic; all settings very much have been found NOT to work for all people).
The first step should be to find a stable ROM and become familiar with how it works, and then start dabbling carefully only AFTER reading the bejeezus out of the OC thread (seriously, RTFM), should a person still be interested.
That being said, in my experience the settings that work seem to be more hardware-dependent than ROM-dependent. After pretty thorough experimentation to find the settings that work well for my TP2, I've been able to carry those settings across several different ROMs without issue. Of course, that being said, I will fully admit that I believe that no amount of care will cause an overclock setup to be as stable as a non-overclocked setup.
Also, yes, overclocking definitely burns through battery life, just like turbocharging burns through gasoline, and this almost assuredly decreases the useful lifespan of your battery. While I'm less certain about the potential for processor damage, that does very possibly exist as well.
That being said, I'm a reckless jerk and always load OCT as one of the first steps on a new flash. However, I do so after having taken all of the above into consideration. It was hasty and ill-advised to recommend that a new user jump in uninformed. My bad.
I haven't noticed a big difference with overclock, so I decided not to use it... The truth is that the phone is perfectly fine. The biggest culprit in all of the slowness is HTC "Bloatware" Sense. I'm seriously considering paying for SPB mobile shell or something similiar and scrapping Sense completely right now, it just doesn't make up for how demanding it is.
/rant off.
I am open to the possibility that at least some of what I perceive could be a placebo affect, but I definitely feel that there is a difference when my TP2 is overclocked to 787mhz, and I currently feel no compulsion to discontinue doing so.
Thing is, I have to admit that the perception is primarily felt when trying to feed the Sense 2.5/CHT resource devourer combo, and even then the TP2 falls noticeably short. It is painfully obvious that Sense was not meant for the TP2, and OC is really just the slap-patch that allows it to limp along at an arguably acceptable pace.
I've been internally debating about going back to SPB MS myself. The amount of functionality that it has is incredible considering the scant resources it uses. I actually meant to drop it back in this past weekend before I got swept up in other nonsense, as I found a little app/toggle somewhere here on xda that claims to switch between manila and SPB MS. I've got CHT on right now, because it is oh-so-pretty, and I am quite fond of my current layout's aesthetics, but it is a total dog, even on Simplicity.
Since I first knew that Captivates were hackable, I always wondered if there was any way to put WP7 on my phone. It isn't because I would have rather had a WP7, but it is simply because I want the option to. I find it hard to believe that none of you haven't imagine WP7 on your captivates. Recently trax26 made a theme of WP7 that looks simply amazing, (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=910918) but, his barely sufficient tranlation makes it even harder for a small time programmer like myself to install it. The screenshots look amazing, but there is no way I can do that.
My question is: Does anybody else know of a simpler WP7 theme to install? A CWM theme would be ideal, but some minor hacking would be okay with me.
And if not, I would just like to put that out there as a suggestion for anybody whose up to it. I'm sure there are tons of people (including myself) who would beta it as much as possible, just so as long the feel is right.
Thanks in advance, Richard.
Look at metro ui in the market. It is a decent wp7 launcher. Some bugs but overall much better then trying the theme.

I'm not saying I want WP7 as my only operating system, because Android is far superior in almost everything, but I simply want it to be able to have the choice of having WP7. I would like to have the speed and hackability of Android, but have the simplicity of WP7. I have to say the tiles are probably the only thing that will keep WP7 going, because honestly, I think they are pretty cool. Metro is a decent simulator that gets the jist, of WP7 but it's actually too simple. The thing about WP7 is that it has cool simplicity by using colored and animated tiles.
And as for the quote "It will be a long time before WP7 comes to android" every rom has to start somewhere.
You'd need someone who could reverse engineer WP7 - then figure out how to use existing drivers or write new ones before WP7 could be installed on our Android phones.
There is no "Open Source" for Windows... ever.
Drivers would probably have to all be re-written or some type of hack so WP7 could work with existing drivers.
So... unless you know someone with a great amount of time - possibly can hack M$ and get the source code we probably won't be see this type of port soon.
well i use LG optimus 7 before i change to captivate just use it 1 month
then sell. What can i said... it actually very nice and really fast phone
and its wp7 is really pretty but it 2 simple and lack of app support for now.
cause its still new maybe another 1 or 2 years i will get it again.
Maybe i'm just not understanding, but im not asking for the windows sole operating system, im just asking for a themed windows 7 rom, or even better, a combination of the home screen on WP7 and the rest of it being android. Maybe thats too much to ask, but it doesnt seem like it.

Granted I only glanced the post, but it didn't look too complex. If you can flash a ROM, that theme shouldn't be a big deal.

Android Phone 7 Theme
Google is your friend!
With all those widgets I wouldn't expect the battery to last half a day.
I read the entire post, and you need launcherpro plus to resize the widgets, which I dont have, and have no money to buy. Also, it's not a theme that you can flash, you need to do some extracting and coding via terminal. It may not be possible to make a complete WP7 theme that's flashable with Clockwork recovery, but I've seen many a theme that looks completely original. I don't know much about ROM writing (if i did i would have the WP7 theme on my phone and this post would be gone), but it seems like with all the amazing devoted themers on XDA, someone besides the before mentioned person, could create a wonderful flashable theme that does not require any money/hacking.

LoL yea i agree.. we just want wat we cant have.. but if we'd be stuck with it we'd be trying to get rid of it
Ive had a captivate since july and i love the phone even with numerous software problems right out of the box. I recently picked up unlocked HTC Surround and its awesome. That one comes with snapdragon processor 1 gig, same one in the HTC Evo 4g, and 512 mb ram and using the WP7 Os it is very fast right out of the box. It totally lacks customization unlike android os and no where the amount of apps and games android has, but the ones it does have are way better versions then the android ones, for example facebook and craiglist. And the xbox live game THE HARVEST is amazing. I would encourage anyone to try one out, very well done OS compared to the previous windows mobile os. I dont think ill sell my captivate because i love having option to choose from either android or Windows Phone 7. I just hope it catches on so it will soon have as many apps and games as Android.
Windows Phone 7 is a polished OS, but it won't even come close to Android or iOS for a VERY long time. And like I said early, It's not like I want WP7 instead of Android, but It's the reason that i CAN'T have WP7 that makes me want it. If anyone has any WP7 friends, give them the idea!
Have you looked into "Launcher7" ? Search it on the market.
If you just want a home theme that looks like WP7 this seems to be the easiest one going.
I think asking someone to port the whole WP7 OS over to a Cappy is probably not going to happen though.

but i think this question will soon become a problem of the past because the ICS launcher is pretty awesome out of the box.

Changeing Launchers
Hi,
is there any way - if you switch to another Launcher - to pre-populate the new launcher windows form the old one, so you do not have to redo everything ?
thanks

Currently I have go launcher ex installed. Its a little better than the stock but could be better.
I also tried louncherpro, but since this is official not supported for TAB, the look was bad. The icons really small and apart from each other (low res.) Widgets were huge. The speed of the launcher was however amazing I would say. I didn't have any widgets however (i use it on my phone and its amazing).

right now im using the Overcome Rom with the Motley Kernel overclocked to 1.5ghz.
Its running smooth as could. No FCs or Reboots so far and i've been using it a lot these last few days.
As I said the ICS Roms are still Alpha, but incredibly stable for such an early developement state! They dont have Hardware acceleration which makes it kinda unusable if you want to watch video on the tab. but that will soon be added and then ICS will definately be the better option.
seriously there is no reason not to root and install a rom. its incredibly easy compared to some other devices i rooted so far and its nearly unbrickable so you don't really risk much

Make sure to play with the settings; when I tried ADW I didn't think much of it till I removed all the animations and it was lightning quick.

yeah! i just wanted to see what launcher would be smooth for the stock rom since everyone complains about it, but i couldnt stand it no more so i rooted it with overcome, im gonna try out motleys kernel with it now! thanks
Also ADW.Ex here. The best so far...
Stock launcher felt smoother for me at first because it had a slower transition between screens. After some tweaking and animations turned off ADW feels slightly better.
Iam using adw launcher too..
Definitely ADW Launcher EX

Not really the place to ask this but here goes anyhow.
Yeah it will drain your battery a bit more because higher clocking will need higher voltage.
That being said the tab spends most its time idling with way lower hz which of course use way less voltage.
So yeah you will drain a bit more but not that much. I'm really impressed with how long my battery is lasting on mine.

Hello all,
I'm new to android and my new AT&T vivid, I'm coming from iOS and really like my vivid so far. It is a little buggier than iOS but I do like it so far. I'd like to load up ICS but apparently that Rom isn't there yet. However, holiraider looks like a good start for me but I can't seem to find a straight forward howto. I've got plenty of computer experience with OS X, Linux and winbloze. I don't want to loose my LTE but I would like a ROM that allows a permanent root. Stock ICS would be. nice. If anyone could recommend a good free launcher other than sense 3.5 that would be great! Thanks in Advanced! Any advice would be greatly appreciated....just don't want to brick this thing!

I prefer GoLauncher EX, it's free and arguably the best out of all the launchers, definitely best out of all the free launchers IMO. It also has free ICS themes, just search for them on the market, read the reviews to find the best one. Then if you want to go even further, download an app called "font changer". Then find the font online called "Roboto" (should be a ttf file) and move it to your font changer folder. Then go into font changer and select the roboto font. Reboot your phone for all the effects to take place, and you'll be pretty damn close to ICS.
Oh, and don't you dare ever refer to windows as winbloze ever again.
thx
Thanks for the replies that "super guide" Is helpful at the least. I'm really hoping for stock ICS. Coming from iOS this is pretty f'in buggy. I'm hoping stock ics is a bit better or at least in a week or two when the update comes out it will be better. Any more thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Was pressing quote but accidentally thanked you...you're welcome for the random thanks
ICS looks like it is still weeks away, and that's the version with Sense. Not quite sure when a vanilla version will be available. I personally found the stock version pretty crappy myself as I would get random reboots. If you are looking for much much better performance and stability, pretty much any of the custom roms available will make you happy. I am personally running the latest WCX at the moment as it is setup perfectly for AT&T's network and is very smooth even with sense. If you're liking the phone now, just wait until you load up one of these custom roms, night and day...

Thanks for all of the speedy replies. I must say coming from iOS where everything was fairly consolidated there is certainly a plethora of information here as well as options. I've been doing some reading up, but if somebody could point me to a general but COMPREHENSIVE overview of rooting/installing custom ROMs/etc. that would be awesome! Also I've noticed there are a few ROMs available for the vivid, i'd love to hear peoples advice on what the "best" is and their experiences. While I am aware of some the benefits of rooting what are some of the really cool things that can be done as a result? Ie - I really love the cube page transition in Sense, on iOS I used a jailbreak tweak called barrel to get that transition amongst many others. Is there any way to get the cube transition in ADW? This is an entirely new platform for me and I'm way behind the curve. As a side note I've never been an ardent user of just one platform, I use what I like and what fits my needs. I've never really understood the whole "my os of choice is the best and everything else sucks" thing. Each platfor. Has its strengths and weaknesses. If I could afford it is probably have them all, mobile and DT/LT! Hell, I'll probably buy an iPad 3! I also see WebOS as being an excellent platform, hopefully HP will open source it and a couple big OEMs like HTC and the like will pick it up because from what I've read the TP's performance under WO is just plain sad...
</end rant>]
