There are a lot of these out there but I want to just say thanks to all the Devs on xda. I have been a member here for a longtime and the answer is always here regardless of make or model.
I recently got in the AT&T Samsung Note and in roughly 10 minutes I was able to root the device and install Google Now all by doing a few simple searches. XDA is the reason I left my iPhone 3G and I have never looked back.
Thanks Again!

Maybe XDA should start to implement a new feature for new members - they have to read a selection of tributes to XDA written by the existing members. This post should be one of them - maybe it would actually make the newbies realise that it is possible to search and not just demand to be spoon-fed the answers.
No matter how many threads you make people read, they still still post stupid threads. I mean honestly one could argue that the OP's thread is just as pointless as threads asking questions that could be found by searching.
And honestly searching is not that easy. I tried looking for a boot animation in the Note forums and it took me like 5 minutes just to find that forum in the search window while scrolling thru every device and praying I didn't skip it.
If I were going to make new members read a specific post, it would be this one:

I do agree this thread is fairly pointless, which is why I wanted to start it way out of the way in the very general category that it is in. And the search tool in the forum is a bit quirky but if you combine that with the use of Google you can pretty much find what you are looking for (xda usually comes up first on any cell phone related google search I do).
But the point here was just to say thanks.

Instead of opening a new thread or posting in a thread in a forum the dev is not likely to ever see, please feel free to press the thanks button for the dev several times instead of posting "Thanks for a great ROM" here or in their thread.
Rate the dev's thread with 5 stars using the rate dropdown button at the top of every page of the thread.
If you feel that is not sufficient, most devs have a donate button with Paypal. I promise you that they will remember you and appreciate you far more for donating even a couple of dollars versus some post, however gushingly approving, on their ROM thread.

Is this developement related or should this be in the QA section? I do think it belongs in the QA section. Next time post in the correct section or post will get reported as spam lol
1. Search dude. This is one of the most obvious questions I've ever seen asked here.
2. Read around the forums before posting, that goes hand-in-hand with searching...
3. Post in the right friggin' section. You have a [Q] in your tread title which means it's a question, which is fine, but its not a "Captivate Android Development" question! It belongs in the Question and Answer section. (which is amazingly obvious, it's not like they hide it from you around here)
4. The answer to your question is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989 which you didn't even need to search to find, its on the first page of the Development section which I know you looked in because you posted here.
*sigh*
The kid has two posts total. He is obviously new to the forums. So stop just repeating what everyone says. He doesn't need four people to tell him its a question and should be in the Q&A section. Sick of the clutter from all the questions yea, but also sick of reading all the bash posts towards people that are fresh to the forums. You were once a noob too!

I have to agree with this 100%. When I first started I didn't even realize I could search the forums or threads. Instead of someone pointing out to me there was search and explain how it works I was unbelievably verbally beaten to a bloody pulp about what an idiot I was. Even today I was taken to task for a post that cites a measure of rom's performance instead of the accepted evaluations we see day in and day out-fantastic, great, best, unbelievably fast. To me the true evaluation of a rom has to be functionality and some measure. If you do not think Quadrant scores, net speed tests and Lin pack scores measure performance tell me what does. I understand e mail works, videos play, I can make phone calls etc. That tells me how the rom functions. How do you measure a rom's performance other than to say fantastic, great, good etc.? Tell me.
All the "this is in the wrong forum, dude" posts are not about development either, so you're all off topic.
Spend less time bashing, and more time helping the new forum members.
The internet doesn't need more assholes, just more manners and good examples.

So just because someone is new to the forums we give them some leeway because they can't READ? Seriously guys it doesn't matter how new you are, if you have a question, put it in the Question and Answers thread. Almost every website has a search function, they aren't hard to find, so that excuse of "I didn't know" is pretty bogus.

when you are reading these forums every day trying to see whats going on in the dev world, all you see on the front page are [Q] threads, posted in the wrong section. then we have to filter out all the BS and try to find useful info, when it should be right there, easily accessible, which is the point of breaking up the sections of the forums....
it's clutter
and the mods do a good job of moving them, but the n00bs come in here and post the BS so fast, its impossible to keep up.
Greetings forum,
I am sensing a common trend here in the forum. People are not reading... which leads me to question if what I am writing here will help.
Please. I beg of you. Before you root your phone, please read about it. Read what it does, how it does it, and what risks you are taking by doing it. There is plenty of information on this site. If you cannot find it here, remember, GOOGLE is your friend.
Now this is probably well known forum etiquette, but please use the search bar. If you are having a problem, look for an answer. Please do not clutter the forum with duplicate threads. Many times, information is not always phone dependent. Meaning, a solution for a Nexus 1 could, very well, work for a Droid, or any android based phone. Do not limit yourself to your phone. There have been numerous occasions where I have found help in a G1 forum or a Droid forum.
This forum is a (usually)friendly place to find and exchange information. (People get grumpy when you ask questions that have already been answered.) It is not, specifically, a help desk. Many people want to use it for customer support. This is not the place, even though many people will help you out. Your carrier has a support line. Please think about it before you post something like "Why isn't my phone getting reception?", or "Why aren't my text messages going through?".
Finally, if you want to get into development you have to read, a lot. If you root your phone or want to build an app or just want to customize, you have to read. Before you start deleting files or adding files or rooting or changing /system/framework, please read. There's tons of documentation. There is very little pity for people wanting to be spoon fed (at least on my part). If this is something you simply cannot or will not do, please do not download root uninstaller and start deleting stuff. Please do not try to upgrade your phone yourself. The carrier retail stores are more than willing to help you.
Get involved and be a part of the forum. You can learn a lot.
Thanks, I was getting a little annoyed seeing the same posts again and again.
If you have a question please search for an answer and then ask your question. Also you can join us on IRC.

search then ask doesn't mean search scan the results threads and then ask it means search read the results then ask to clarify what knowledge you gleaned from the results you read.... I see too many people say I read the thread but cant find this or that literally 2 or three posts after the last guy posted the EXACT SAME THING and got a reply. some of these threads would literally be two thirds smaller without the constant repitition.

Well how bout just starting/creating a section or forum or whatever it would be called, where open thoughts/questions/ideas/or whatever can just be asked/discussed WITHOUT having to go thru all the searching and back posts and reading n reading? A section that's out of the way of all the techs but still within the zio section. Work and kids and other things going on in life don't leave much search/type/read n read time, lot easier to just ask (even if its already been asked some other where) and check back later for any results/replies.

I like the one which rom do I want to run like we know their personal taste
You always start as a noob. Today's annoying noob can be tomorrow's brilliant developer who makes all the goodies for free! People need to stop b***ng about noobs! I was once a noob when it came to SEO, web design and then I was the one helping hundreds of other new noob designers. It's a process you know
That's what stickies are for. They're in every forum on every site, and usually contain useful information. Anyone new should always start there for information. Maybe the rest of the forum should be unlocked for viewing/posting, once the sticky has been viewed.
Noobs
I agree the only difficulty is that I find the search tools on the forums difficult to use. There might be a better search engine or way to orginize the threads to solve this issue.
This is true here and in practically any forum on the internet.
There are noobs (which we all were at one point) and then there are idiots, the ones who register just to get their question answered, never contribute anything to any forum they visit, and are just too lazy to use the search or read stickies.
I was new to the Vibrant and somehow managed to flash my phone and root without having to post a single question. Stickies and search provided all the info necessary.
Some people just can't be helped or want to be spoon fed. Whenever I see a new thread asking something that has already been answered numerous times or is stickied I sometimes wonder if this person has never used an internet forum before, or perhaps are new to the internet itself and don't know their left mouse button from the scroll wheel.
I used to ridicule them now I just ignore them.
That ^ has to be the best signature on XDA. Period.
how do I flash this?
I see no issue with new people asking questions that have already been asked.
The search feature here is sometimes annoying.
Plus, if it annoys anyone so much, just ignore the question and let someone else who doesn't mind answering it to answer it!
I agree on the part that some people say about everyone starting off as a noob.
But god, they don't even TRY.
Before I joined XDA-Developers I had NEVER owned a smartphone.
But I managed to root, flash, unroot and unbrick my phone by myself, just searching around.
What the **** is wrong with u people??? The forums are specifically made for damn noobs, we all were noobs so dont keep **** complaining about damn noobs and all that **** ... Setiously, theres too many ignorant **** on the vibrant forums, wich is y many developers have ditched us here, so quit **** complaining and contribute to the damn forums by simply helping people who need *** help, not by driving them away!!!!
And next time please keep this thread civil and easily readable for others. There are stickies for a reason, and for the most part they cover the basics to get the newcomer up and ready to start flashing the device. Perhaps a mod should change the stickies link to be in large, bold red letters and name it "FREE MONEY. REDEEM IT TODAY!" to encourage visitors. While a newcomer can feel welcome to post a question if they are truly confused, there is a Q&A section for that kind of question, not the general.
As someone who has written many guides, some better than others, I'm starting to think they're not worth the effort. They may be, I just only hear from those with issues, or respond to posted questions.

Ive been a member here for a long time and while ive held my breath for years ive finally had to get some things off my chest. For one thing I have been a member of multiple communities and multiple forums for many, many years and I understand that while every community is a vast network of people as well as projects, I can say here is the one place without a shadow of a doubt that I almost never post simply because i know one of two things will always happen. One I will either be ignored or two someone will tell me to use the search bar. I understand that there are quite literally thousands upon thousands of pages of things so when either myself or someone who has just started here goes to search and even advanced search there are still thousands upon thousands of choices. If we are a community built on helping each other, why are we not really doing so? Im not asking for you to do the work for me, Im not asking to directly link the post, im not asking for the work to be done for us. What Im asking is why dont we give others a helping hand by you know, giving them a "path"? Saying to them "Search for the words so and so and soforth and soon". Maybe not, but it comes across as one. You say "If we are a community built on helping each other ..." - that is the problem. XDA is originally a site for Developers - not for noobs to join up and start demanding immediate answers, people to do the work for them, Devs to include everything the noob wants in their ROM, getting pissy when they don't receive an answer in an hour, swearing when they are told to search (not because we are too lazy or arrogant to help, but because searching means they will read, learn and understand WHY and WHAT - so they are far less likely to then screw their phone up totally and start blaming XDA for making that happen).
Does that answer your questions?
It also gets frustrating seeing the same exact thread opened again and again because someone refuses to click the search button. You will notice that if someone states that they made an effort to search prior to opening a thread they will more than likely get flamed less and get an actual link to the thread they are looking for.

I realize that, however this is a public forum and we were all new at one time struggling to find out more about our phones. I am not adding for immediate answer I'm saying why can't we say "hey, go look for this" instead it just makes things easier and more friendly. I can't tell you how many times ive actually used the search button and ended up with 7000 threads and this is using advanced. Some people don't have time to read everything in those threads.

Hi guys, may i speak a little bit of my mind?
I've been on XDA for quite a moment now, forget about not contributing to any development please , and i do know one very simple ground rule: SEARCH!!!!!!
But from my time here i realise searching for something and getting the right answer here on XDA does requires getting the keywords right + if to minimise the scope, search in the right forum and thread. The experience is not something Google offers.
Thus alot of times this has happened to myself, especially newbies, forget or skips searching every single forums and threads, looking through a 40 page thread just for the 1 sentence answer. And the result, lots of angry 'old birds' and mods.
Thus can i suggest setting up some kind of Knowledge Base forum or thread? This KB will the centralise of all the essence of developments, bugs, fixes that exists in this forum modified by a Mod/Admin only. Something like a library.
Having a Knowledge Base will really be helpful to (budding) developers as well as technology leechers like me  It reduces effort wasted on searching high and low to the lesser extend, but really dealing REPEATIVELY to replying the same old questions with the same old answer. Just tell people to look at the knowledge base and that's it, no more reason and cause to post repeatative questions. It is different to the stickies existing now. Users still has to look page by page for their answer.
Ok I shall end my whine here now. Thanks for allowing me let off my mind.

Yes. but my point of having it managed and maintained solely by a mod/admin is for the knowledge base not to be 'polluted' by questions and answers. Kinda like a locked thread.

Its a good idea. But then, its not like we have tons of roms out. And its not like we have that many bugs on the phone.

Understand. Perhaps this idea can be utilised at other places of XDA or the entire XDA which im sure with all materials centralised and summerised into a mega knowledge base will be very very awesome.
I think a FAQ can helpful and it will sure help new people.
Creating a KB can be a heavy time consuming job even though we don't many roms.

Every new users or users that isn't active should be forced to watch the "You are a Noob" video till the END the first ten times they try to post a comment...
Then there would be no excuse not to search before asking dumb questions that have been answered a thousand times..
