Trying to upgrade Samsung I9001 without much luck - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Form
I have been trying to upgrade my Samsung I9001 without much luck after searching this forum and Google
Below is the following info for my Phone.
firmware 2.3.5
BandVersion I9001XXKPF
Kernal 2.6.35.7-perf [email protected]#1
Build Number GINGERBREAD.XXKPP
pda: i9001xxkpp
phone i9001xxkpf
csc i9001vitkp2
Via this form I have been able to gain root access to my phone and have been trying to install one of the latest roms from this forum
ICS333-2.0.1-signed but I keep getting an error message "Error in /cache/update.zip (status 2) installation Aborted"
So I have read further on this form and with google and people write that I need to install a Value pack to upgrade the firmware 2.3.6 using Odin and setting the phone in Download mode, this I have tried and after 20 mins and changing diffrent USB ports didnt seem to work.
I then bought the Pro version of ROM Manager where you can download the latest roms "Darkys_v9.5" this downloads but when I try to install I get the same error as above "Error in /cache/update.zip (status 2)".
So after a couple of days searching and reading im not any further, so tought that I would ask the more experienced users of this forum for help
Is is possible to upgrade my phone to the Latest Android Version and what software scripts do I need for my phone version
Thanks in advance for any help

First thing you should do is use the WIKI for i9001 http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_Plus/GT-I9001 , IF you try to use i9000, you will have only problems

same link has links to custom ROMS but first you need a CWM recovery, you can find there or on my Android collections link below, use i9001 CWM 6.0 recovery

Hello Xsenman, thanks for your replay and like to your goodies page
I have done what you said and and added a CWM 6.0 Recovery via Odin and when I enter the recover mode it says CWM_based Recovery v6.0.1.0 so this is working, I then tried to install the "Darky Rom" or the once from this forum ICC333-2.01,
But get the message e: error in /sdcard/ICS333-2.0.1-signed.zip (Status 7) inall aborted
or from darky Amend scripting (update-script) is nolonger supported was deprecated by google swich to Edify scripting (update-script and update-binary) to create working update zip pakages. install aborted
So im a little lost on waht to do now.

I think you are trying to Flash an i9000 Rom on a i9001, it won't work, use only i9001 ROMS.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1409605, like I said earlier you need to use the WIKI

Hello Xsenman,
Thanks for your help and time, I think the biggest problem that I had was that I was looking for information for the Samsung S1 and reading stuff
for the i9000, anyway with your kind help and Patience you managed to guide me in the right direction.
I have now managed to upgrade my phone to the Android 4.04 from Gingerbread 2.3.6

[Q] Unable to get Superuser Permission for CWM on Galaxy Note

i have done all the steps to root + CWM using the CF-Root method using the 'not-rooted-yet.bat'

Yes you are on nonrootable rom.
I giving u guideline here follow it.
1. If you have already any older rom on your hand, then just flash it with pc odin
Then get root + cwm,
After that, you can update to newer rom with cwm.
2. If you dont hav older rom handy, just find last link on my signature 'when other method fail.....' Follow that link, then you will have rooted rom.
After that u can get cwm/ mobile odin and update newr rom with it.

but IF you must have only Eclair and want to root it, you can try various rooting tools found at Collections for Android link on my signature

Im on Eclair, but I dont want it anymore, I want to have the new Jelly bean, but cant have acess to root, neither rom manager neither CWM, so cant install nothing by that way... as I tried severals updated.zip and no one can work...
I was thinking, only if I flashed some ROM through ODIN3, like for example:
- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1326416 as that is possible to flash over odin, and then i can flash some ROM with Jelly Bean through Clockworkmod...
Is that the best way?
It would work if I flash that ROM using ODIN, on top of Eclair 2.1?
Need some help here ^^
EDIT: Just saw that on your sig and in your post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11113557&postcount=1
If I do all those steps, can I install that Rom without any problems?
Even I haven´t root yet? =\

Yes, you need to use ODIN3 to Flash the ROM, since your goal is Jelly Bean, you need to be on Original Gingerbread First, to do that go here and select the Firmware according to your location http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102881 ..Follow Flashing guide to the dot
Than go here and install a semaphore kernel, which will give you root and CWM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112908
after that you need to visit the Jelly Bean Developers thread of your choosing and follow their guide to install Jelly Bean ( BUT be aware Jelly Bean is NOT fully Stable yet)
Darky's Resurrection ROM is for those who are having problems , yours is Just a Normal upgrade, so best use latest Original Firmware, First

Your phone is not officially supported by Mobile Odin. That is a risk.
If you want to continue, go to this link and download CWM-FROYO.Tar. at the bottom.

Once you downloaded the .Tar file, follow the instructions at this link.

This took me less than 10 minutes to find the information. If you have done what I said and Google it yourself, you would not need to waste your time spamming random threads throughout XDA and opening up old threads from years ago. If you can't bother to read through the links I have provided and continue to spam random threads, I will report your for spamming. If you managed to do this successfully, reply to this thread instead of opening new threads or spamming more threads. I will help you to the best I can.

Well,
Odin is a program that Samsung engineers use to directly flash the software onto a user's phone.
Example, when you go to a service center for your handphone repair, Samsung will flash your handphone's software using Odin.
Kies is a consumer based suite where you can do a lot of different things like updating software and backup.
You can either use Kies or Odin to upgrade your phone software BUT! You can only use Odin to install CWM (custom recovery).
Use Kies if you want to upgrade only, use Odin if you want to upgrade AND install custom recovery.
You need a computer for both programs. If you want to install using Odin, computer based Odin and not mobile odin, do tell me so I can help you. Using Odin can break your device if you don't do it properly.
I hope this gives you a better understanding of how Android works.
Wow it was really worthful information for me...
But bro i would like to first update using kies if it really supports my device..because i have the following aims
First update to new version to experience my new featured phone..
Second to install CWM using odin as u have said...
Third partition the sd card to increase internal memory there with i can move the application data to sdcard( using CWM )...
And again thankyou for your guidline...it also increasing my knowledge and let me experience the android software..and with which i can overcome the disadvantages of my phone...its interesting...

Sure you can update using Kies. Those who are much more comfortable with Android would directly update to the latest software version using Odin and then flashing CWM as it's much more direct.
For me personally, one of the first thing I would do when I get a new phone would be to get root, install/flash CWM and then install/flash the latest Android version using CWM. It's much more faster and convenient because I would only need to use the computer once, and that's to install CWM on my phone and I can use CWM to install a newer Android version or custom rom.
One thing to remember is that, if you have root and you choose Kies to update your phone to the latest version, you will lose your root access on your phone. So remember to install root again after you update your phone.
Second thing to remember is that, once you have updated your phone's software, PLEASE BE AWARE OF WHICH VERSION OF CWM YOU ARE FLASHING. If it's meant for Froyo, don't install it on Gingerbread and vice versa. If you don't, the installation might not be successful or YOU MIGHT EVEN BRICK YOUR DEVICE!
Thirdly, when you're using Odin to flash CWM or updating the software, please READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY! Odin has some options that you can select but most of the time you don't have to change anything. If you are unsure if it's the correct options, close Odin and rerun it. Doing that will reset the options to it's default. THIS IS VERY VERY IMPORTANT! If you try to install CWM or update your software and you selected the wrong options, you can permanently brick your device!
That's all. It's very long, I know, but since this is your first time I think it would be good to let you know of the dangers that you might face if you do things wrongly or do not follow the instructions. Glad that I can help. If you're still unsure you can just ask here again.
Yes offcourse we should know the both +ve and -ve aspects of what we are doing...but i would say, by questioning i have many more learnt than to read the other farms and also better than googled...
Also i feel confidence what i will do..
But kies should update my phone to the latest version...but is gingerbread the latest one?
send from my GT s5570 froyo..
Yeap, it would update your phone to the latest. Officially it is Gingerbread, but you can also flash up to jellybean on unofficial ones too.
Also using kies can i update to jellybean or with CWM...

You can upgrade your device to jellybean with cwm only. Before that you need to be on gingerbread, not froyo.

What he said. Samsung only provided Android upgrade up to Gingerbread for your device. You can check out his thread and follow his instructions there and install Jellybean. Once you have CWM installed, it'll take about a few minutes or so to upgrade to Jellybean via recovery. At least most of the time lol. And like he said, it'll save a lot of headaches in the future.
Bro i would like to begin with kies...no problem which one...but once i will jump to gingerbread, flash cwm and then partition as i have said you before...
Also will i overcome the problem of incompatible applications...e.g firefox and many more...if not...

Yeah. Flash CWM using Odin. Don't partition your phone using Odin though.
Flashing a jellybean custon rom should solve the problem of incompatible applications as it's a much newer version of Android than Gingerbread.
But, some custom roms requires you to flash some stuffs first if you're upgrading from Gingerbread to Jellybean.
You can always check with @Venkatesh what to flash as he's a rom developer for one of the Jellybean rons for your phone.
Ok thanks alot for helping and giving the information...

No. You need to use Odin on your computer to flash CWM. But once you have root and CWM, you can upgrade your software directly using the .zip file from your phone in recovery mode.
