Performance Bottleneck - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone ever managed to push the Exynos Dual processor and Mali 400 in the Note to its limits with any application or game other than a benchmarking app? Have you seen the chipset struggling anywhere so as to make us consider going to something with the Exynos Quad?
Its just a doubt of mine as, so far I havent seen or tried any app which makes the dual core struggle anywhere.

try cooltool to check cpu frequency, it might not be a performance of phone issue, but game coding issue

I guess you read my question wrong. I dont have any performance issues whatsoever. What I meant to ask was if anyone has managed to truly push the Dual core Exynos to its limits with any application or game excluding benchmarking tools. i.e, is there any application or game out there at present that can make our year old hardware struggle?
I asked this because I have a Galaxy S3 and a Galaxy Note and I prefer the Galaxy Note due to its screen size compared to the S3 and I dont have any present intentions to get the Note 2 as I've already put money on the S3 this year. Moreover my Note is just 3months old which makes it pointless for me to upgrade so soon.
I was planning to give one of these phones to my dad who is not a "power user". He would just use the phone for calls, texts, VOIP and browsing. So it doesnt matter to him whichever phone it is.
The only disappointment for me with the galaxy Note is the "clipping" which seems to appear in videos and shadows every now and then. Otherwise its perfect.

yep I understood wrong, I havent found such a game
supposedly, a benchmarktool should do that, but even then if I dont set min max on highest frequency it doesnt stay that way.

Load some Hi graphic intensive games bud... NOVA 3, Batman (the dark night rises) and etc.... while playing, run some VOIP apps, emails and etc... While running those simultaneously, make a graphic intensive presentation and load it on your phone (thru Polaris).
Then switch back from the games your playing, to the apps you've open in the background...
See if you will be getting this after.
1. Extreme lags.
2. Force Close on some open apps.
These are some of the things I can think of in checking for Performance bottlenecks... If your phone passes this with flying colors... then GOOD. If not, so there's your answer on the Dual-Core chipsets limitation

Apply livewallpaper, & fill all your homescreen with online widgets then install facebook.. i dunno i saw my phone before clocking at 800mhz to 1400mhz non-stop with that setup & hell its hot whenever i switch wifi on lol

Dude I know what you mean. Right now I think there is nothing out there to fully use the duke core to it's fullest potential. Only the ram is the main issue for me on my note. I just traded my s3 for a TMobile note. Dumb? Maybe but I like the bigger screen and stylus. I just wish it had more ram. The s3 over all is alot smoother in everything. IM still getting the note 2 when it's available.

I have noticed that backgrounds of games tends to scroll in a choppy fashion.
For example, try
Garfield's Defense: Attack of the Food Invaders
And just run to the right and watch the background - you'll see it doesn't scroll smoothly at all.
Same thing happens for most HD games that have scrolling backgrounds - broken sword, seven stars 3d, etc.
gameplay itself seems mostly fine, but the choppy backgrounds are really distracting.
Every now and then the Note tends to start lagging, especially when syncing.
Try syncing facebook contacts via haxsync and the note will be grinding while that's going on.

Given this is the best... Any other new ones out that can compare?

Hola
So i am one of those types of users that likes to indulge with new tech especially phones. Windows Phones are too limited, Apple is controlling (though yes the same can be said about Microsoft mobiles), so I am pleased that Google came out with an open platform.
Now that Sammy has brought out the Galaxy S2, which was a really excellent device, and afterwards the great Note, is there really anything better that we can expect soon? It's like we have hit the top edge with no where to go at all. None of the other OEM's can't seem to make decent phones to compete...
What is your opinion?
So what you want me to do 'bout that?
Probably a bit premature to make that pronouncement as most tech is quickly out of date but am guessing this was for discussion
Am looking forward to Tegra3 quad core coming out to mobiles (check out the Transformer Prime), increased cpu and gpu speeds with ics, improved battery life, faster internet speeds 4g or more.
i saw a tech demo where a guy connected his galaxy nexus to a monitor, bluetooth keyboard and trackpad, and mouse and used that as his main computer.
also hoping for a galaxy note the size of an 8.9 tab with the notes' digitizer.
Lots more to look forward to.
huawei announced a quad-core with 16 graphics cores at mwc 2012.
looks like we still have a way to go just yet, most likely lower power consumption.
i wouldnt let that stop anyone from purchasing a galaxy note though. in my opinion it is by far the best android phone currently on the market.

Personally I find huge amounts of processing-power quite meaningless on a mobile device, it's useful only if you play lots of games. If one could slap the mobile on a dock and turn it into a full desktop then it would be a different matter, then all the processing-power would actually start to make sense.
I just hope one or another manufacturer does come out with a mobile with a good dock and properly-supported desktop OS, there is no such a solution available yet.
Good thing I use my phone for real life applications like videos, Web surfing, drawing etc and not benchmarks then, and there the note is by far better.

So you like messing with quad-core on a passive-cooling device?
Tell me more about its usefullness on a longer period of useage.
Also to point out the Note actually does what its supposed to with the S-Pen, taking notes on the spot.
'Ubuntu for Android' is a usage scenario that will warrant quad-core processing. Check it out on the Ubuntu site.
Some manufacturers argue that quad-cores use less energy due to lower clock speeds, and shorter utilisation times. I know nothing about hardware though so I couldn't argue for or against this mindset.

From the big ole Note
The Galaxy Note is now what was the HD2 then... the top performing AND
customizable phone for almost 2 years running. HD2 is still a top-phone, considering it will run anything from winmo 6.5, WP7, Android 2.3 on SD and in NAND, as well as ICS, ubuntu etc.
This fossile HD2 still runs my ubuntu in the car pretty darn fast!
You just know when such a "long lasting gadget" is released, if your blood runs a datastream and your hart pumps in cycles.

Not a ton. The ace isn't the fastest phone (800mhz processor stock). If you want a faster phone, I suggest a new one.
Anyway, first is overclocking the processor. The highest stable I think I've seen is 921mhz. This however ends up killing your battery (works the other way around too). For this you need an overclockable kernal (I don't know how to do it or where to get it lol). Another thing you can do is remove useless apps (so thinks like email, Gmail, maps and things that aren't usually used). This will free up some RAM and make sure that you don't have many apps running in the background at the same time. Speaking of RAM, get an app to manage that as well. Don't know how effective it truly is, but its something to do. Get rid of a few things like live wallpapers and FM radio as well as that's a lot of ram and CPU usage right there. Just look for key words in the title such as "light" (for useless apps being removed) and "OC kernal" (for the overclock) and hopefully you'll get what you are looking for.
Oye... I dunno.... I'm no pro at this (I'm not even a dev), but I'm just throwing out suggestions.
Anyway, use search, Google it, and experiment. Hopefully you can get some good performance from this cool little mid range device, but remember, its that, a midrange device. Not gonna beat the S3 anytime soon

I own the Galaxy Ace, and there is no way you can make it faster.
I tried so much: Switching Custom ROMs, Uninstalling apps, Overclocking etc.
But they all don't work.
The Ace is cheap, you can't get something as fast as a Galaxy SIII or HTC One X for that price.
The thing is, it is faster or we think it is faster?
Sent from my GT-S5830 using xda app-developers app
Overclocking is very useful and as others have said, works in a ratio with battery. Once you have rooted your phone, find a custom ROM you like ( I recommend Apocalypse by Itsoulas - it is very, very fast and best for games) because they are brilliant at helping you do what you normally cannot on the stock rom.
Good luck and welcome to Xda!
Sent from my phone... AND WHAT
What Ace said is true, but my phone's battery life is already poor without overclocking.
First thing
Since when does the ace has legs ?
It cant run
Sent from my GT-S5830 using xda premium
Its so easy
1. He wants the best performance right??yes.
So i would prefer the official stable cyanogenmod rom with some tweaks. And maybe not so usefull at all but also overclocking, like many of you said it before.
2. Come on guys we have an almost 2 years old ARMV6 device which was from the first release date since today a midrange or maybe lowend device. So please. Its natural that we cant compare it with quad core or dual core phones, in some cases even not with singlecore armv7 devices.
All in all its a sexy phone with iphone look and acceptable performance at all. AND its still cheap

My Take On The Nexus 4

As someone who has tried (and failed) to switch from iOS to Android in the past, I feel I should share this with other who maybe have the same problem.
I have tried some many android devices, HTC, Galaxy S, S2 then S3. Galaxy Note, you name it I've gave it a go.
Problem I always had was that it was too laggy or had too many things missing for me that I loved about iOS
I have once again taken the plunge with the Nexus 4.
I LOVE this phone. LOVE. It is everything a phone should be, to a point. It's the best android phone i've ever owned. I hate the look of touchwiz, never a massive fan of sense, the sheer beauty of the "people" app, should be enough to tell you that google has ARRIVED.
My only bug bears are the obvious lack of storage, which i'm actually doing suprisngly well with, like I have an N7 which I watch films / tv shows on, so the N4 is basically for music, along with spotify it's working like a dream (also have google play with 16,000 songs, which is working well, although download speeds are awful)
The other biggy, and this is the one is the battery life, I've tried franco kernel, cm10, stock kernel, etc etc. There's no two ways about it, with the screen turned on and using 3G it EATS the battery and that saddens me a lot. I'm lucky that I can charge it at work, but lordy lordy lord does it eat a lot. It's a shame, I'm hoping in the future they'll be a fix for this, I mean it's not a show stopper, but it's more annoying than anything else, seeing the battery go down as you use it for browsing and listening to music etc
Other than that, I think I've finally done it, I've finally broken the iOS spell and made the move. I'm delighted, the phone is lovely to look at, lovely to hold and use (and actually works unlike my f*cking iphone which dropped calls left right and centre)
I'm chuffed
Congrats man. It's pretty normal for a new phone to have horrible battery life at first, but then to get a big improvement with software updates.
Suprised that Franco's kernel isn't helping you though.

try faux kernel. undervolt by -100mv on all frequencies, lower your max frequency to 1134, and change governor to intellidemand. you should see better battery life then:thumbup:

I cant help but think though, that phone manufacturers should stop worrying about siz and weight and just stick a slightly better battery in. I mean a couple off mm and a few grams is hardly gonna put people off buying a phone.
I know for me the first thing i look at is "Battery Life" not size and weight.
I mean look at the iphone 5, it's too ****ing thin, make it the same size as 4s and stick a bigger battery in ffs
Definitely I know for myself that I'm happy with anything below 1.5cm which we know would give a lot more battery life, shame we are stuck with manufacturer's going for thinner phones and the only company to buck the trend is Motorola however their phones currently suck .
Battery life is improving for me I have narrowed it down to the radio, it seems mobile data destroys it much more than ant other phone I have used...WiFi performance is amazing and idle well I can say its the best. This was on the matr1x 4.0 kernel, not stock however.
Not sure why mobile data kills this device but WiFi efficiency is through the roof at least

Battery life is definitely a problem when using a phone with mobile data on. That's Google's mistake with android 4.2 and hopefully be fixed on 4.2.2.
Also congrats on moving to Android. I also moved from iPhone to android. To nexus s to be exact. The experience wasn't lag free but it did what I needed to and I loved the customization that android brought. Since then, been using android, but only nexus devices as I love pure android look

you realize that the iPhone's battery is about 1400 mAh right? the secret here is an efficient yet limited software.
that's not to say that the 2100 mAh is not big enough for an Android device. it should do just as good if not better than the S3, which has a similar sized battery. something certainly is not working as intended. some say a buggy radio, others speak of the 4.2 and hardware not optimized. whatever it is, i am hopeful that a software update will take care of it.
i generally agree with the OP, i don't see myself using skinned Android anymore. stock android>IOS>skinned android.

open system tuner, press the voltage button, the first voltage (384) should be 900mv. press the -12.5mv a few times until that first one says 800mv, now they're all lowered by 100 you can go further if you want, some chips can handle -150 no problem. but in my experience 100 is pretty safe and enough to notice a difference in battery

Android is already better than iOS in terms of users anyway, I would like to just pick at the part of Jobs making the touchscreen...he didnt it was infact HTC that made the first capacitive touchscreen device, Apple just put together all the same hardware 5 years later and marketed the crap out of it which is great its typical apple and now we have an amazing market where Android exists and these high end smartphones are popular and back in the market .
That's apple all over though really isnt it
I mean archos brought out an Mp3 player with video about 3 years before apple did it on the ipod, apple then claimed they invented that, along with the wheel, dinosaurs, and the earth
If you guys are worried about the battery I highly recommend an external battery pack. I know they look sorta gimmicky like that stocking stuffer present you get and never use but there are some sleek looking ones that match the beauty of the nexus 4 and are easy to use. Its sorta like carrying another phone around in terms of weight/size.

The op said he has access to a charger so what is the problem? It is not like we are in the woods.
You are using a personal computer. If you sit down and listen to music and have the screen on how long do you expect it to last?
I also listen to podcasts bit I know of I do this I will not get an entire day.
When I use the phone normally I get great battery life. Just go into your apps in the panel and look under running. Use titanium backup to freezing what you don't need.
Good luck..

Hi guys
Did you tried Real racing 3?
the game obviously lags on the 4x . unfortunetly, no developer cares about the 4X, and i think we are gonna have big trouble with future games too. Its the same with the other games; only one core always active, from 700 (??) to 1500Mhz... a shame. One X does lag like the 4X as i've seen at youtube

theres a solution. It works perfectly fine for me now. If you have a rooted phone, tweak with the cpu speed and governors. The game works perfectly fine after that. However, the phone heats up and battery drains quickly.

Doing this and changing the governor to performance makes the game much smoother.
Try LG Gearbox. Set "Active Cores" to 1.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1854008
It will run without any lags but with low graphic details (which can not be noticed really)
Be aware that, setting active cores other than 4 with LG Gearbox, sometimes makes your phone freeze or restart.

this method worked fine for me. Originaly, the game setups our device on high or mid. I changed to low and now its not lagging and the graphics are still cool.
I didn't change any detail settings.I used No frill cpu to set the cpu to performance and the game runs fine.
I also tried "No frills cpu" with the "performance" option and saw that the game can be played without any problems.

To be honest, I'm sick of this crap. Most Wanted lags, games designed for Tegra 3 lags (Oh yeah, I have Tegra 3 inside, as you might know), Vice City is not even accessible for normal users of 4X HD and now Real Racing 3 lags also. I will throw this piece of crap away and will buy next Samsung or Google flagship this year. I'm also upset with nVidia. I'm happy my laptop is running by AMD stuff. How you can work with bunch of noobs (question for nVidia) in mobile devices area?
And, of course, brilliant 2012 summer flagship without Jelly Bean. Why HTC One X have this? Same ****ing summer flagship. Jesus Christ.
Great...Now that your are offtopic ,go get your self a samsumg , where lag is a part of their whole UI...

1x1.5GHz or 4x1.4GHz
you have to be aware that the tegra 3 will give the 1.5GHz only for 1 core, the max CPU speed for 4 cores is 1.4GHz.
so if a game is optimized for 4 cores, it will run much faster on 1.4GHz.
you should keep that in mind when you lock the CPU speed at 1,5GHz

After a little digging, this is an issue across several Samsung tablets, all using the Exynos 5 Octa. I can confirm this isn't a high DPI issue either, because the game ran just fine on my Note Pro 8.4 with a Snapdragon 800 Processor.
Sigh... they put out a flagship product and put their buggy processor in it. I don't know if this has skewed my perception of the tablet, but I also seem to be noticing unexpected lag in other apps as well-- including the XDA Premium app.
Have you installed Nova Launcher?
Sounds like an isolated I issue. I'm playing SHADOWGUN EADZONE , NBA 2014, Badlands, MC4 and so far I'm getting excellent game play.

Yes, this is with Nova installed. It seems like it's probably a combination of a poorly coded came and some quirk with the SOC.

My guess is the game doesn't know how to deal with an octacore processor.

I'd suggest contacting the developers using examples of working games such as the other user mentioned. Sometimes the devs respond by email especially if an issue can hurt sales. Also a review on Google Play can get attention too but first try the email route.

Exact same issue with my Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition. EA dug in to a certain extent, but eventually the ticket died. To be honest I was sick and tired of dealing with them by that point. IIRC almost a month had passed.
What a sh*t situation!
yeah they cant check every game and app to see if it runs super smooth. And gaming is not on the top 10 list for this tablet.
Nvidia, Amd, same kind of thing.
That sucks one of the reasons I returned my 2014 note :/ but hey I don't play it anymore I wonder of its a game issue or exynos issue
Beans you shouldn't be playing games...... You should be working on ROMs lol!
Modern Combat 4 sucks on this tab, my kd is suffering badly. I truly hate this tab and pretty sure its going back. Sad thing is I'm sticking with a Tab 2 7 because I think its better. I'm sure that's the kind of customer responses Samsung likes.....
I got the update on the 27th when I initially powered it up but didn't install the update until I became hopeful it would cure the lag.... Wishful thinking. IT WAS MORE BLOAT.

The only labor intensive apps I have tried are Real Racing 3 and GT racing, they seem to run fine for me on the 8.4"
Maybe I'll give MC4 a shot to see what my experience is.
I've been having the same lag issue in Simpson's Tapped Out on my Tab S, Galaxy S4, and Nexus 7 2012. All 3 different SoC's, but same lag issue. I'm going to go out on a limb and say its a game issue. Zen Pinball plays beautifully, as does NFS Shift, PvZ 2 and everything else I've thrown at the Tab S.
I have the same problem on my 8.4 tab s.
The game runs smoothly on my Samsung Galaxy S4 phone and Asus Transformer TF101 tablet.
I opened the case 14146643 with EA. Let's see what they responds...
A real test is GTA:SA.

I've only tester simple games to date (TSTO, Dungeon Keeper, etc). Will try some more challenging ones in the following days.
Arghhh just got my tab and it does the same. Tapped out lags so hard you can't even tap anything lol
Hope they fix this issue...
Does Simpson tapped out lag from the start? I just tried it out and set up a new game. Played it for about 30 mins and it didn't lag or get choppy once.

It's working OK with a new game, but once you log in to your Springfield, everything gets slow. I'm maxed out in level and my city is big and crowded...
