[Q] Media gallery on Cyanogen 7.2 erases after reboot - Galaxy Ace S5830 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-S5830 purchased in Mexico from Telcel running CyanogenMod 7.2.0. Every time I reboot the phone the media library (music, pictures and videos) becomes completely blank, and I must repopulate it by starting the built-in file manager, marking the SD card's root folder as media scannable, and issuing a new media scan using the Dev Tools app. This is a hassle because every time I reboot my phone I have to reconfigure my ringtones and my alarms. I have already done my googling and poking around wikis and forum threads and nobody seems to have any clue.
Thanks in advance.

Try to look in your sdcard folder...if you find a .nomedia file, delete it and re-run media scan... .nomedia files tells the system not to scan that particular area for files, its appearance at wrong places (e.g. The sd card root directory) will cause media not to be found...

[Q] Where to copy the images/videos/songs to NC with Honeycomb

Hi,
I've installed my Nook Color with Honeycomb (HC v4 eMMC 2nd).
I've copied few images and videos into the NC (by mounting the 'media' using Nook Color USB Mass Storage utility). But in the gallery nothing is shown and I tried the same with SD card too. In fact I've faced the same problem with Nookie Froyo too.
I came to conclusion that I m copying the files to wrong place (unlike my N900 which reads from any place )
Some one, please help.
Thanks.

Try another way install "file expert" from market, run the application and enable "ftp sharing" and so you can easily connect PC to nook and transfer your files.
Thanks. But can you please tell me where to copy the image/video files? I mean is there any special place where NC Honeycomb looks for media files?
Quite new to the whole thing myself, images belongs to DCIM folder to show up in gallery and I believe for video/mp3 it does'nt matter which folder you choose.

Thanks. In fact I've copied a movie into the media directory. But no luck Any other thoughts...
Fellas,
Am I only one having this problem ? At least confirmation from people for whom it is working fine with Images (I need to try with DCIM), Videos and Songs would be highly appreciated
What are you using to copy the files? Have you check with astro that the files are actually copied? if you are using ums, unmount the drive from the PC beforce choosing unmount on ums.

I don't think the HC rom can see anything written in the folders on EMMC. You can't even navigate to it with Root Explorer because I don't think it's even mounted.
I've switched back and forth between CM7 and HC, and while running CM7 I moved some music from my sdcard to the Music folder in EMMC. When I loaded up HC all of the music disappeared, and only my photos on the sdcard were viewable. Once I flashed back to CM7 all of the music was back.
It was also a test for me to see if the entire internal memory of the nook is wiped using the options in CWR, and apparently all of the files stay intact.
I am having these issues as well. I put a picture in every DCIM folder on the nook. I put it on my micro sd card, and nook media drive. I have unmounted and mounted several times. I have tried music with a folder named music on the root of my sd card and in the nook media drive. I can see it if I go to it in root explorer, and actually play it from there, but nothing will show in my gallery or music player. Any help is greatly appreciated.
ROM - nookie comb
Thanks you all for your inputs.
Initially I've tried with CM7 only. Might be I've some thing wrong... I'll try with it again..
If the issue is originally present with HC rom, though disappointed, but still okay with it as I can be sure that i m not missing something

Hint
After long gap I think I see the problem now. When I copied images to NC (mounted using UMC app and ejected from system and then unmounted in UMC), the media scanner seems not seeing the updates or it is sleeping. If I restart the NC, then images were shown in the Gallery app.
Is there any setting or tip to make the scanner look for the update?
Will Nook version of Cyanogenmod or any Android 2.3 firmware release does the task well?

Android by Default rescans for Media at every Boot. If you want there are Apps to Manually scan.
Search the Market for "Rescan Media ROOT" it will Manually force Scan you're device and can disable scan on boot if you want to speed up boot.
Also I recommend getting "StudioKUMA" as it allows you to easily Blacklist folders which you don't want scanned.

Thanks. Does it mean when ever we copy some new media (be it images/songs/videos), we manually need to initiate the scanning. (asking again because my Nokia N900 will show the new stuff without a glitch immediately I eject from System)

Only if you want it to recognize new stuff imediately. It'll scan for new stuff eventually but sometimes it can take awhile.

SD Card -> DCIM for pictures. I use Astro File Manager to view them without issue. Will try tonight to see if I can see them in the gallery.

Hi folks,
the Android Media Scanner is deleting files stored on my ext. SDCard.
First I thought the card is broken but then I found this:

Is anyone else having this issue and/or got a solution for it?
Thanks!
Edit: I am on CM7 n82 currenty
Probably own fault. Might be cause by mounting ExternalSD wrong way.

Gonzales,
I updated from Android 2.3.4 to 2.3.6 this weekend, and the problem started. I came across both threads at the Android Developers forum, and found no solution.
You do mention above that it was "probably your own fault... see updated thread". Well, I did read the updated threads, and found no solution.
You hint that it has to do with the way the card is mounted/unmounted. And this weekend I did in fact mount/unmount the card various times, connecting it to the PC.
But what exactly did you do? Did you find a solution?
Thanks,
[SOLVED] Media Scanner Deleting Files from SD Card
OK, I believe I found the solution. Apparently the problem can be caused by the SD card being mounted and/or unmounted properly. In my case, I was connecting/disconnecting to/from the desktop PC, having the SD card as Mass Storage. At one point, Android wasn't detecting it anymore so I removed and inserted it a few times.
I did what I describe on the same thread at Android Developers: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=3692#c117
Here's what I wrote there:
So I did the following, and it seemed to solve.
1. Connected phone via USB to desktop PC, and dismounted card from phone, allowing data transfer to PC (via Mass Storage Device)
2. In Windows, as a test I created various folders with subfolders, with image files in them. On some I placed a .nomedia file in root and sub-folder, other only in root, others I renamed the sub-folder to start with a ".", etc. (NOTICE: I copied existing .nomedia files from other folders, as Windows doesn't allow files/folders starting with "." to be created)
3. In Windows, I ejected the USB drive politely (i.e.: I didn't just pull the cable out)
4. On phone, opened Settings/Applications/All and found Media Storage
5. Deleted data from Media Storage
6. On phone, I disabled the external access (file storage)
7. Waited patiently until SD card was detected and mounted (previously, I tried forcing that to happen by opening applications that would query the SD card)
The phone performed the Media Scan a couple of times, and ALL MEDIA FILES REMAINED THERE, where they would originally have been deleted from.
In all test folders I created from within Windows, no files were deleted. And in folders that originally had media files (which I didn't touch through Windows), the files no longer were deleted.
Anyway, this seems to have fixed it for me.
My system:
Samsung Galaxy Ace, Android 2.3.6, rooted.
An extra hint: if you feel you card access is slow, get an app like SD Booster and increase the cache size. On my device, it was as low as < 100Kb but increasing it to 1024Kb made a huge difference.
And if you don't want the media scanner to run on boot (increase boot speed), use Rescan Media Root.
Both need root access, by the way.

And I've had no problems at all ever since, and even mounted/unmounted a couple of times.

[Q] GUESTE'S 2.2 final ext4 - gallery - SOLVED!

Hello everybody!
As per title I am opening gallery and it sees only items installed in the internal sd, how can I let gallery look at .jpg files registered on the EXT SD ? I am not used to this filesystem. For example linking through USB to the car audio system let you listen only to songs installed on the internal SD.
ALL other considerations on the ROM are: perfect, particularly regarding battery life. Didn't find options for my SIP number account, using Sipdroid flawlessly .
Regards.
Alessandro
Try to force media files check. Go in Settings , Sdcard and memory, and unmount/remount sdcard.
Thanks for your reply, tried also folders rescan in dev tools, seems it scans EXT EMMC also but no results . Must look into some older thread in Acer Liquid, I remember smthg regarding a COOLIRIS.MEDIA file in sdcard in order to let device look into specific media for the type of files.
Will come back with results .
Regards , Alessandro.
So, I found that msg., but it regarded an old 2.2 version of Android for the Acer Liquid, and it said to cancel file in Android/data/, all the files in Cooliris.media, and reboot; maybe System remounts files in the SD when scanning for media and rebiults this file properlY ( it seems now untouched from the 23 of December ). Turning to EXT 4 as I am now maybe left EXT Sdcard unchanged: even if I set photos to be recorded in the external, photo is actually recorded only in internal SD ( which is a bit ..... full now, with nandroid etc. ) .
Need help.
Regards
Alessandro
solved
Found I had from 5/1/2012 a .NOMEDIA file in the root of External SD: deleted it and ... problem solved.

[Q] Media storage on ALL JellyBean Roms

Cannot see any of my media (music, images, etc) on any JB rom...
Most people respond by telling me to delete the .nomedia file (which I dont even have on my sdcard) or deleting the media storage (of gallery and apollo) which also doesn't do anything
Can someone who has solved this problem, explain how they solved it

XT890 Data loss? HELP!!!!! PLease!

I can't believe this.
The same crap happened to me on a second XT890. I'm lost for words.
here is what happened.:
Got a phonecall, when I wanted to pick it up the phone would turn off saying not enough power, at 30 % !!???
Ok, so no big deal I thought,...turned it back on, had the same person calling me, everything was fine. Then i noticed the stored mms images would not load inside the conversations. Si turned the phone off and on again, mms images are loading again.
Got another phone call and my personal ringtone, gone, no longer there. Couldn't even switch it back even though the file, supposedly was there. Then I tried to play the file, google play music would not.
Next, all my images are gone, no longer folders of the camera and images and videos. Using quickoffice , that app says, no files on the internal sd card! WTF!?
Turning the phone off an on again, let me see the files on the card again, even let me play an audio file, going in and out of the folder, the files disappeared again.
So long story short. Everything seems to work except my files are gone and quickoffice and fileviewers won't find the files. When i put in an external sd card that works fine on other devices, it won't load the files, images, videos, only maybe 3 of 100!? What the hell.
This is the second time on a different phone but same model this has happened.
I can't afford to loose the images and recordings. are they gone? what has happened? I ran DR Fone recovery, and even that won't find the images i need,
Phone is rooted. And it's driving me nuts. Battery was replaced 6 months ago, everything was fine. Now that.
Please help, need my files, desperately.
What could have caused this? ? What is not working properly? Indexing? Gallery? Quickoffice?
Could be a corruption in the data
" corruption on your internal memory
" corruption on the system partition or dalvik
See if adb can find the files on your internal sdcard. With the command: adb shell ls /storage/sdcard0/[path to video/photo]
Thanks will try.!
In the meantime Root Browser shows the sd card as empty, and last time changed as 8/5/12 which was the build date of the phone.... :-/
Funky, When hooking up for adb and running a command the files and sd card became visible. So while visible I was able to safe all the files to external card. When restarting the phone the internal sd and files disappeared again. I cleared cache and dalvik and media storage, no effect. files remain hidden. Running sd maid it says system files are hidden. using es file explorer running showing hidden files i get a no permission response. same for sd card, says no permission. so something is blocking me. virus? i don't really use wlan or internet, wondering how to get everything working again. files and everything is there, but i have no access.
Still looks like a corruption somewhere. I should just safe all files that u need, backup data and do a full system restore and start over. With full I mean also a internal memory wipe.
Maybe there is a much better option, but I don't know any atm.
Still fiddling with it. Thought I just do a factory reset. Well didn't work.
Somehow before I did the reset the media store app was moved to sd card and a different apk was placed in system / app folder.
After the restart you guessed it, all data was gone as expected. Gallery and ringtones and video, and so on won't show. The media storage apk is in system/app folder, but it won't show under settings/apps/all.....
Not being an expert I think I messed this up by switching out the apks,.../
The one now in the system folder is: version 4.04-1351904261 but I need version 4.04-1344118159
Who can tell me where i can find one?
