MIUI for Captivate - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok,
my sister in law has a captivate, about two months ago I rooted it and was able to put MIUI on her phone. Today she brings it by and the phone constantly boot loops.
I tried to reinstall MIUI but it wont boot now. I am still able to get into recovery, but nothing else. I used the standard steps, 1 Wipe Dalvik, 2, Wipe Cache, 3, Wipe data/factory reset, 4, install MIUI, 5, fix permissions and then reboot.
Am I missing something??
any help would be great!

WHY is this in the dev section ?

[Q] Used Nexus One - fresh start

Hi,
I have purchased a used Nexus One running stock 2.3.3 (with locked bootloader) and I am wondering how I am going to wipe it as if it were a brand new install (no residual settings, apps, accounts etc)?
I have done a bit of research and found that the recovery allows you to wipe data, is this what I would do?
Thanks,

Okay I'll try that. Thanks! How does this compare to the recovery 'wipe'?
if you're not rooted then this is your only option.it works well. to do a recovery wipe then you will need root and a custom recovery installed.
I thought it was the same thing? You can wipe in stock recovery...can't you?

Has anyone ever flashed another rom directly over serendipity 6.4?

Looking for data about flashing rom over other roms and their status of being stable. Feel free to tell whatever. Thank you.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Yes. Try the serendipity q&a thread.
Caution swyping! Read at your own risk.
Thanks but I was hoping I could get serial flasher who flashes over this rom only to help me with this experiment. This experiment is only for froyo and not gingerbread.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I did, I flashed over serendipity and went to continuum. Serendipity works with ginger bread boot loaders.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Are you serious? Ginger bread bootloader? That is a first I heard. how you do it without getting bricked
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Sigh...don't worry about gingerbread bootloaders unless you going to gingerbread. He was just saying the new bootloaders are backward compatible, why he brought that up idk.
Otherwise in cwm wipe data/factory rest, wipe cache, go into advanced wipe dalvik. Flash whatever froyo rom you want.
Thanks! Very much appreciated.
but I'm still looking for flasher who actually done it to list what type of rom they flash over serendipity and if it work properly.
I know some people who flashes and got good results and some with poor result.

studacris wouldn't steer you wrong.
I gave you that suggestion because that's what I do I have been to stock like 6 times. Total. Flashed every rom over every rom.
If you have any problems after you flash over it, just flash back to stock like you normally do.

Hold on a minute. no disrespect! I appreciate your response and answer. I'm looking for other people/flasher as well. I counted you already. I'm looking at the what rom and results after the flashing. That's all. So no disrespect to anyone. Trying to listen to whoever experience flashing over serendipity. And I thank you for your time.

I don't really know what you are expecting to hear. A rom will wipe system/data/cache/dalvik so technically it IS a fresh rom. Flashing over an old rom doesn't affect ANYTHING in regards to the actual rom.
Sent from my HTC Desire Z
That is what I'm researching because others claim flashing over roms causes the new rom to not work properly while others have no problems at all. Then there are others who flashes back and forth to the same rom before and notice it doesn't work like it's suppose to when they had it the first time around.
Let me ask you...could it be titanium backup or bad flash. Could never really understand what a bad flash is technically.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
lets put this into perspective, and think of it like your home computer.
on your phone, you have a few partitions. lets think of these combined, representing your C drive
/system /data /cache /datadata (these are the main ones to focus on)
when you format to load a new OS, there is NOTHING remaining of the OLD OS that could possibly cause conflicts. because essentially the drive is clean after the format and you load the new OS, and never see any traces of the old OS on the drive.
if you look at the update-script located in every single CWM flashable zip file, you will see a few things.
Code:
format SYSTEM:
format CACHE:
format DATA:
format DATADATA:
then after that you should see:
Code:
copy_dir PACKAGE:system SYSTEM:
copy_dir PACKAGE:data DATA:
copy_dir PACKAGE:updates TMP:/updates
this creates the new partitions, essentially for the system and data
as you can see, the rom flash will wipe the OLD system and data off and put a new one on. what is left from the old rom???
That about covers it lol
Thank you very much! So if some thing goes wrong then it's pretty much the file which results in a bad flash.

the only reason to go back to stock with ODIN prior to flashing is if you wanted to repartition and reset the file system. i did it many times while working on the Andromeda builds, because I wanted to make sure that coming from stock people would get the appropriate filesystem configuration and setup
Is there any problems you would encounter if you didn't have your partitions and file systems reset?

very unlikely with the 2.2/2.2.1 roms. the kernel devs are pretty much all on the same page with using similar lagfixes that offer compatibility across the board. think of using ODIN and going back to stock as a last resort. 'when all else fails' type of thing
You said very unlikely. Its that part that I'm more interested in. The part that causes us to odin back to stock. When all else fail
Is there something that we do or is it the results from flashing too much that causes our partitions and file systems to go out.
Doesn't flashing reset our files systems and partitions?
Just letting you know that I am very grateful for your time and input. Your elaboration and explanation. You are helping way more than you know.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
It's not caused by flashing too much, as far as your phone is concerned each fish is its first because it wipes first thing.
sometimes something just doesn't write correctly in cwm, for any number of reasons. thats whats known as a "bad flash." but that can be solved by a reflash. you would need odin if say the battery were to die during a flash and all you get is the "phone....!.....pc" screen

SGN rebooting HELP!!

Hi Everyone.
Following on from my question this morning asking this question I have more time to be specific.
My note is unrooted and I downloaded to ICS 11.06.12 using Kies. Everything seemed to be going well except for the fact the phone just keeps switching itself on and off. For example; the screen is off, I want to check the time or date, by pressing the home button the screen switches on, all fine there, but then 7 out of ten times the phone then reboots. It has done this during calls, using apps and playing games when my son uses it.
Does anyone else have this issue or better still anyone have an idea why it does it?
Many thanks

He says he's not rooted so there's no option to clean dalvik.
Also wiping cache under ics can trigger superbrick. Either install Speedmod kernel and wipe dalvik and cache, or downgrade to gb, perform full wipe of all, the upgrade again.

do not use recovery unless you are on safe kernel. All ics stock kernels are unsafe. Downgrade to gb rom or install a safe kernel than do wipe/factory reset. All the instructions are present in this forum read carefully.
People!
Before you answer some of the questions here on this thread... do take a notice first if this is a fresh question posted by OP or not!... This question raised by the threadstarter was dated -10th July 2012, 08:49 PM. Now seriously... You think he would have this issue till now??? this post is nearly almost 2 months already!!
Geez!!

[Q] Downgrade from LSA JB to ICS?

I've run the LSA firmware with little to no issues for a while now, but recently my phones decided to run hot and reboot itself with increasing frequency.
so I'de like to revert back to stock ICS and see if that helps or if I'm looking at a hardware failure.
is there any particular trick to this or can I just backup using Ti, load the new (old) ICS firmware in Odin and flash away?
thanks for any advice guys...
How old is your phone? Make sure your battery is good condition, before proceeding anything.

the battery is a Gold higher capacity model, there is no bulges or tears and the heat isnt coming from that, I pulled it to check. the glass side is the hottest side.
Good. My suggestion is, go through drketan threads / tutorials which are comprehensive on your problem.

on the problem or my intended solution?
I've started uninstalling apps because the thing reboots during backup.
every-time i uninstall an app it reboots as well.
If you want to go back to ics, backup whatever you want using tb.
Then boot into recovery. Format/system, data, cache, preload.
Then go to advanced and choose reboot download. Then connect to pc and flash using odin. Make sure not to wipe while on stock ics kernel. Install a safe kernel ASAP.

[Q] Help Flashing new ROM, Fresh Start needed.

Hi all, I have looked all over the place, I need help.
Here are my Current "About Device"
Hardware Version: I800.0.3
Model Number: SCH-I800
Firmware: 2.3.5
Baseband Version S:I800.0.3V.E104
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-dsb9938.VZW.GTab.E104.1.1.2
I have looked at the "back to stock" threads, multiple DL links are no longer available.
I had rooted, and Flashed a "Cube" ROM quite some time ago. A while after that I messed something up with the built in "overclocking" type app. Set it to the side and kind of forgot about it. Fast forward to know, I would like to get it working for my son to use, but there are a few issues that keep us from using it. I kept getting all sorts of random force closes, so I was able to get in recovery, and tried to wipe everything. This somewhat worked for a while, but now I am getting a force close from Facebook (which isn't installed, and I have narrowed it down to a contact synching issue) and I keep getting a popup for an OTA system update. I have tried to do the update, but I think the recovery is keeping it from completing.
Long story short, I know this device is a bit older, but where should I start from? I am ok with a fresh, wipe everything start. Not looking for a crazy ROM, but just a everything works ROM. I am ok with GB, ICS, etc, I just want it to be fully functioning. I plan on adding the tablet on my account so I can stop tethering for my son to use it. This has been the only device I have ever needed to ask for help, I am just not so used to the ODIN type stuff.
Thanks in advance.
I tried to do a reset, and wipe from CW recovery. Then restore, it has been stuck on the black with white Samsung screen for about 10 minutes. Don't know what else to do right now.

There's a very new thread that should help you get back to stock. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2383201
As far as what to put on it, I highly recommend this CM10.1 ROM. It runs very smoothly, but if you want to activate data, I think you have to go back a bit for a working kernel. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2043421 The CDMA version is the p1c.
I don't know if you have come across this yet, but unlike any device I had flashed before, the GTab recovery has to be flashed with a corresponding kernel. You can't just flash the recovery to get into recovery.
