I'm sorry if someone already asked this question but I was not able find an answer. I am running a custom ROM now, do I have to go back to stock before flashing another ROM?
It is usually not necessarily to do it but it a very good idea to return to stock and master clear with the odin-1-click
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
No you don't need to go back to stock. Nor is is necessary to master clear. Most if not all the roms on here will do a full wipe of your SD card during the install. Flashing back to stock just adds another chance to mess up your phone. This was advised, several months back but it's not necessary now. This doesn't apply if you want to flash to CM7. They have their own install procedure that is different than anyone elses.
Just to add to what the others said. Make sure u flash a 2.2 based rom over ur curent (if thats what u are.using atm). Also you cant restore system app, it will screw up with ur new rom!

The 2.2 stock will not let you flash a rom over it. Go back to 2.1 stock

Not what I meant.
If he flashed, lets say, FireFly (which is 2.2 based) then he can't flash over with, lets say, CM7 (which is 2.3 based). Just simple logic
@ OP - You can look on the ROM's thread to see what it is based on.
Thank you for all your help. I'm using Phoenix Ultimate now and want to try out the other ROM.
It takes like ten minutes to odin back to stock. I do it every time, just feels like a cleaner install. Plus all the devs put that in their instructions. I trust the devs.
If you download the CWM update.zip before you Odin to stock and leave it on your phones internal SD card, you don't have to root or get ROM manager. Place your new ROM on the internal card too. Just Odin to stock, allow to boot, and restart into recovery (3 button combo), install updates (twice) then use CWM to install zip from card (ROM you downloaded).

One less time touching Odin is one less time tempting fate. But that's just me. I'm pretty sure every rom dev in here has bricked a phone at least once...
much agreed. less odin. less potential for problems.
roms do a wipe now. doesnt matter what you had on it 2.1 or 2.2
2.3 is the only rom version that has a different partition table.
there is no issue flashing a 2.2 rom over 2.1 or vice versa. how CAN you upgrade from 2.1 to 2.2?? CWM anyone? oh **** right!
the only issue with flashing over 2.2 is the 3e recovery... and thers a fix for that. you dont need to go back to 2.1 to avoid the signature verification error... @crystalhand...

Not all devs put it in their op. Some devs say flash first thru clockwork and only use odin when there are problems. Odin could be better used as a recovery tool only, not the first thing you do whenever you want to flash a new rom. Just my opinion.

EXACTLY as it should be.....
No, odin is potentially more dangerous than any standard rom flash. as has been mentioned, use in case your in some s
I've always flashed back to stock using Odin whenever I flash a new rom. Like someone else on this thread said, it just feels cleaner doing it that way. While I don't doubt you guys when you say it's dangerous, would anyone like to offer a brief explanation as to why that is? And would anyone be willing to guess at what the odds of a permanent brick might be? Are we talking something like 1 in every 10 flashes or more like 1 in 1000?
If it's closer to the first one then we really are playing with fire here but if the odds are more like the second one then I don't consider that much of a risk.

I highly doubt someone is going to give you a "odds" answer. Phones can be finicky and they often do weird things. The less you're "changing" things, the better. Odining back to stock then flashing again to the ROM of choice just adds another chance for something to go wrong. Not just cable falling out or battery falling out, just weird coincidence. When there's absoutely no reason to go back to stock, why take the chance? Just because you're programed to THINK it's cleaner doesn't mean it is. As has been said several times already, most roms do a complete wipe of the sd card so there's really no reason to odin or masterclear.

Odin should only be used as a "Oh S**T I bricked my phone" program. But then again, if you read and know what you're doing than it should never be "needed"

Completely agree just want to clarify 1 thing. The roms don't do a complete wipe of the sdcard. The wipe the /data /cache and /system partitions, leaving the /sdcard completely intact, just like flashing to stock would. Master clear just reformats /sdcard partition and is not really needed as the os doesn't use this to function and including this in a rom would be catastrophic if the zip is in fact on the /sdcard partition you are wiping with it.
The most I do is clear cache, data and disable lagfix.

Yup. That's how u do it, if you have no need to root before hand and back up, I'm assuming you've done that if I remember right you are the girl I told to brick her phone yesterday to return, is the replacement on eclair or froyo? Ig it on froyo you will have to get past the 3e recovery that's why I ask.
1. Phone must be rooted and have CWM recovery installed
2. Download Rom of choice and place on internal sdcard
3. Make sure all LG drivers and software are removed from computer
4. Install LG Flash Tool
5. Install Drivers
6. Remove phones battery, sim, and sdcard
7. Hold volume + button while plugging in phone (keep holding volume + until phone is recognized)
8. When asked for location of drivers choose the correct location (this will ask twice) Should be C:\Program Files\LG Electronics\LG Android Driver
9. Right click on My Computer and select manage
10. Click on device manager
11. Click on ports and then right click on the phone port and select properties
12. Click on tab for ports settings and click on advanced
13. Change port to 41 and click ok
14. Unplug phone from computer
15. Run LG Flash tool by selecting the alternate .exe file
16. Select the appropriate .dll file and select the appropriate .fls file for the S/W, select the USB button for connection mode, click ok
17. Select the picture up top that looks like a printer cable and select port 1, click OK
18. Click on the yellow arrow up top and make sure port 1 says ready
19. While holding your volume + button, plug in your usb cable and hold volume + until port 1 shows some activity
20. Process should run until 22% and then say failed. Choose the red circle with a minus sign to exit.
21. Unplug USB from phone and insert battery, sim, and sd card.
22. Boot phone and after booted power down.
23. Boot into CWM recovery and wipe data/factory reset, wipe dalvik cache, install zip from sdcard, choose zip from internal sdcard, select Rom. Reboot system and enjoy.
Hopefully this simplifies things for those of you that are trying to get Gingerbread installed. If you need screen shots for certain parts I will try to help out.
Watch Video and follow steps above "http://youtu.be/ExwoHC5pOiQ"
To get back to stock just use the V10e .fls file and then load the stock rom from CWM recovery.
For factory stock try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1270832 after the baseband is restored
Files you will need to Flash Baseband from Froyo to Gingerbread and Back http://www.mediafire.com/?c2i2f4c9sz8u8z2
Froyo baseband for Brazil below. Might help users not getting signal in Canada or Latin America.
Just for the record, I'm not taking credit for anything other than just putting the information already out there into simple step by step directions that I used.

Did you use superoneclick to root it? And do you have cwm? If you do odds are your rooted! Btw I'm loving GB super fast and smooth. I'm using coh'a lite rom instead of the Acura one the only problem I have with it is that Swype keeps force closing so I had to install some other swipe keyboard from the market, but its not a bad tradeoff

I hope it can fix it , thanks to everyone at XDA,

The I9000UKG3 is your modem(baseband), not your ROM (firmware), so don't worry about that. As long as you have signal, you're fine.
Before flashing a Jb ROM, do you factory reset, clear cache/dalvik? Is the screen problem right at the start? Do you restore your apps?

Ok, We'll start from the beginning then, You can get in download mode right?
Grab Odin KK4 without bootloaders, Corn kernel with Odin 1.85 and put the ROM (and Gapps) you wanna flash in the root of your internal SD. Flash KK4, boot up and make sure everything is fine. Once that's done, get back in download and flash Corn kernel.
From there, you can flash the ROM and the Gapps that go with it.
I believe you went through those steps already but hopefully we can find what's wrong by re-trying/reproducing the problem. Oh and don't restore any apps before trying it.
If that doesn't work, I'm thinking you might have the wrong Gapps or wrong bootloaders but first time I hear of a screen that doesn't work on JB but does on GB.
EDIT:
I just went through the thread to see that you already have KK4 and Corn on your phone. You don't need DesignGear to root, you can go in Corn's recovery to root your phone. Now, after re-reading, you said that sometimes it's iresponsive, what exactly do you mean by that? it takes a while to register your touch? locks up and you get no response for a few seconds?
Usually that's from lack of free ram. So a app sucking it all up. Have you tried JB (with the right Gapps) without restoring your apps?
PS.: You shouldn't restore your app with TiBu coming from GB, you can restore their data but should fresh download the apps from the market.

Usually when you boot the phone, it shows SGH-897 but it doesn't matter, I could be wrong.
As for the hardware issue, just like some Sleep of Death (SoD) issue, it's something that a software can't fix, it's something broken within the phone (hardware). I don't know if it's the case here but it's always a possibility, especially if the phone was dropped before, the screen connector might need to be pushed back into place.

As for the hardware issue, just like some Sleep of Death (SoD) issue, it's something that a software can't fix, it's something broken within the phone (hardware). You can get Odin KK4 with bootloaders. There's a risk of bricking your phone when you flash bootloaders though. There are needed to be on ROMs that are GB and up but I think you already have them.
As for the hardware thing, like I mentioned before, it could be like SoDs, where the phone will randomly shut off when you're using a ISC/JB ROM.

really, really thank you......
I used Odin to download, but now the Tab is stuck as it just keeps saying loading...
I tried disconnecting the battery, but that didn't work.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

What did you try to download and do you have a custom recovery installed, twrp or cwm? With whatever recovery you have try doing a factory reset and wipes.

I believe I was trying to download a new CWM with odin. I'm not sure how to use a factory reset and wipes as I can't use anything on the GT, as it is stuck. As this point I am hoping that the new IC firmware will be available through Kies.
I can still use Odin from the PC through Kies, though.
Thanks again!

Does Odin recognize your device? If so you can flash the stock rom from sammobile.com. You need to extract the .tar.md5 file from the zip. Use 7-zip to do that

Again, thanks for responding...
At this point I'm afraid of "Bricking it" before I can have a chance to update the firmware to IC. Hopefully that will be soon.
I really don't know what I am doing, and I have already screwed it up. The GT Honey Comb is working fine, but I can't do anything to upgrade it, internally, as everything is stuck within the GT!
At one point I was trying to upgrade to Jelly Bean, but now I'm just hoping to just get IC. If I can get the IC downloaded through Kies, I'm thinking that the new firmware upgrade using Kies will take care of things. What do you think?
I guess I can live without Jelly Bean.
But I'm willing to give something else a try, however, I would need detailed, step-by-step "For Dummies" directions on what I should do; and as kind as you are, I wouldn't want to ask you to do that?
Kind regards,
Golf Educator
Hi. Don't be scared of losing your device. Will try to walked you thru the process.. just to be more clearer. Can you write down all your device info such as current firmware that u r using? And also do tell us the region ( im XME -Malaysia) because sometimes not all the stock rom can be use to upgrade..
You may need :-
1- kies(for drivers)
2- cables
3- charge your tab to 80%
4- windows/os of ur pc or Mac
After you post all of the info. I or we will try our best to walk you thru the process

Okay, here we go... let's shoot for Jelly Bean!
Model number: GT-p7300, that has wifi with G3, European Version, as I work with the US military at RAF Lakenheath, England, and bought it locally. I am in the London world-time zone. Five hours earlier than EST.
Android version: 3.2
Baseband version: P7300xxkj6
Kernel version: 2.6.36.3 (Original when I bought it, however i did root it) [email protected] #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Dec 23 13:54:01 KST 2011
Build number: HTJ85B P7300XWKL4
I'm using a PC HP Pavilion with Windows 7 with Odin 3v1.85 that does turn yellow when used.
The Kies on my GT works, but the Kies on my PC for some reason doesn't recognize the GT. I believe the Kies drivers are loaded, ok.
I am using the original Samsonite Cable.
Now you know more about me than my wife does...
Thanks,
Golf Educator :fingers-crossed:
Sorry for all the questions, but it's hard to diagnose all the problems from a distance. It sounds like when you tried to flash cwm something messed up the tab. But if it still turns on you can probably get it to work again. Kies is a crapy program so I always use Odin. When you plug the tab into Odin does the com in Odin turn yellow and show the port?

No problem with the questions... appreciate you taking time to help!
I use Odin 3v1.85 with the correct Samsonite cable. It does turn yellow. I don't know if it shows the port. I haven't toyed with it again as I didn't want to lose the use of the GT to be able to update the new IC firmware that is on the way for this GT-P7300 with wifi and G3, European model.

Ok, that's good, Odin is working and now we can get you up and running. Let's try on thing first, can you to recovery mode? Hold the power button and volume up button down, when the tab responds let go of the power button but still.Hold the volume up, then a second later let go of the volume. This should bring you to a menu where you can do some wipes and a factory reset. (I don't remember exactly what's there) IF you can d o wipes try that first. If that doesn't work then try the factory reset (do you have any data and pictures, etc you wantbacked up?)

Hi,
I'm in the United Kingdom and bought the GT in England... It is the GT-P7300 with wifi and 3G. The IC hasn't been released for the United Kingdom, yet, but it should be out in a few days.
I also think that my Odin is working... but the Recovery Mode is the internal problem that I mentioned with the GT. That is where it is stuck saying that it is loading (but it is not loading). At this point my problem is because of that I can't get to anything and can't do anything in the Recovery Mode with it stuck in that frozen loading effort... including wipes, factory resets, etc., it just keeps on saying that it is loading!
Thanks, again, I appreciate your interest and effort!
Are you trying to use cwm 5.5.0.4 that's in the 8.9 development forum stickies? I would 're-download the .tar version again and try to reflash it with odin. You'll load it in the PDA section and only have the auto-reboot and f.reset checked. Don't have anything else checked. Your first attempt could have been a bad download of cmw.
If you're currently rooted then will have to do something different in order to get the OTA ics when it comes out. I just got it for my tab a few days ago. You'll like it much better than hc.

OK! I think I've made some progress...
I was able to get clockworkMod_Recovery_v5.5.0.4.tar from androidjinn.com. I was also able to get a connection from Odin as it turned yellow. I loaded the PDA with the .tar as you suggested, and started it. It passed! Now I have a CWM that works. Afterwards, using it I did a Factory Reset.
Now, I have a newly installed hc and a working CWM. But, would you believe that the Downloading Mode is still stuck on loading. Do you think when we flash a new ROM that it will reset the reloading correctly?
I feel pretty proud of myself! I think I am ready for Jelly Bean...
How do I do that?
Sounds great. I've been running jb for quite a while, but frankly I'd wait for the ics. Runs just as good and it's stock. Never thought I'd say that until I tried it.

Two questions:
Which system will enable the GT to be used as a phone?
How do I root my newly factory reset hc so my aps work?
Thanks
I have an i957 tab which is different than yours so I don't have an answer to your second question. To root your device see the stickies in the tab 8.9 development section it should be as easy as flashing a zip file thru your recovery. Make sure you get the right zip for your specific device though. Otherwise you can brick it. The biggest mistake people make its using a file for a similar device rather than one for their specific device.

Good work so far! Now you just need to download the rom (.zip file) and gapps (also a .zip) for the rom you want to use. Put those on the sd card of your tablet. To do this you may have to "mount external storage" in the cwm menus. Once you get those on there, do a full wipe, and then install the rom and gapps. That should do it for you.
To be honest, p7300 can only make calls via root and using cm9 custom rom. Will try to help you mate!! Sorry for late reply..
But just to make it easier, the 1st step is to use stock 2.3.6 that can be installed CWM 5, after getting that. You must download the custom cm9 rom and install into your internal memory(as i can recall all cm based rom will update your cwm 5 to 6 in the process). Will give you the link and try to resolve your probs!!
This is what you will need :-
Download Gt p7300 XEU stock 2.3.x ROM(search via filecorp)
Odin
Pits file
(all this is just in case that you need to flash it back to stock)
Will update my post in a short period of time!

Note to gulf educator: if your going to install a custom Rom, cm9 etc., you don't need to root first.

Hello,
I have gotten the stock ICS rom from samfirmware.com, Installed using ODIN and it all went green.
However, after restart the touch screen is not working !
I have tried the following:
1. First the Default (XXX) ICS rom
2. Second, the Actual ATT ICS rom
3. Flashed CWM and it is working
4. Then tried AOKP unofficial rom, not starting
No luck so far, any help is much appreciated please.
The touch screen was working after step 3?

One more note now, am not sure if that is normal if not.but after the latest flash ( preceded by a data wipe and format ) I can now see zip file I have placed on sdcard but can't access them for flashing and/or ad new zip files from pc

Tried, booted, "SAMASUNG"screen only ( as expected sicne i formatted the system ), then re-flushed the ATT ICS and same output
Am trying to get a new ROM flashed, but when the device powers up [ without me going through the wizard ], i can't write anything to SD from my PC.
Any info around here about flashing CM or AOKP using ODIN for this I957 ?
Not with Odin that I'm aware of. All are zip files and would go thru cwm. If you get only to the Samsung logo, my experience has been a factory reset usually gets you past that and if that doesn't work flashing the stock rom with Odin does. And I'd flash the honeycomb rom and bring it back to they way I bought it, then upgrade to ics

I should mention something that has gotten me worried, i flashed a TWRP recovery to check if the touch would work there, but it didn't.
Not sure if i should be worried about HW now, or try another TWRP for instance? Or perhaps TWRP shares another flawed tab wide configuration with the Android image ?
It's not twrp, I use it on my tab and it Works fine. If you were the only one who has this problem I'd say hardware for sure. But at least one other person has the same problem after updating to ics. It seems like there something with the firmware interfacing with the touch screen.
