I really wish we will get a true docking solution soon. But it seems the audio dock is all we have to look forward too. You would have thought with all the buzz leading up to the release, there'd at least be one good company to step up and make a "surface-like" keyboard dock, and a simple otg setup for the mouse.
I guess we can only hope. Not a bad set up though.

Yes both are bluethooth.
The keyboard is connecting (pairing) directly to the nexus (you need to turn on the BT and set it up the first time)
The mouse has a mini usb receiver and it is connected to the USB otg, no need to set it up.
If you have a normal computer BT keyboard (with usb receiver) you can use the USB hub to have both the mouse and the KB

The 1st one is plastic, the second is metallic, I'm using the metallic one.
This is what I use.
K400 logitech keyboard and mx anywhere mouse..... Both sharing one unifying logitech usb dongle so a usb hub isn't needed.
Next is the same mx anywhere mouse but with the Motorola xoom blue tooth keyboard. Keyboard is awesome and most android shortcuts on it works. Such as music controls. Eg hit the music button and Google play opens. Web opens up default browser. Gmail even opens with the shortcut key. Volume controls work too! Heck even the search button opens up Google now..... If there was only a microphone key.

Here's the setup I use. It's a USB keyboard with built in trackpad. It's Logitech branded and came from Wal-Mart. Probably $20. Works great, I keep the dongle in my OTG cable and the keyboard in my messenger bag.
When necessary, I just pull it all out. It's all extremely light so if I have to travel a short distance, I can carry it all in hand. Love it.
I just use my case as a stand, and I'm ready for hardcore typing in <1 minute if I'm quick about it
EDIT: I was wrong about price, appears to be $35 but I don't remember paying that much for it. Eh, even if I did it was worth it. I use it all of the time and it's quite comfortable. I would recommend it.

yeah the k400 has a built in track pad but i prefer using a mouse. the k400 was only 5 bucks at staples after a coupon that was on the internet.
http://slickdeals.net/f/4921844-4-9...g-Receiver-after-coupon-Staples-B-M-Only-YMMV
I also have the logitech unifying receiver but only have a keyboard for it, here is my set up:
I have a usb mouse then the keyboard and a usb stick and even a small usb freezer, but if I have the freezer plugged in nothing else works cause it takes some power I'm surprised the nexus can even power it, also if I have the usb stick ck in with the keyboard and mouse when I stream videos from it, it doesn't really work so I can only really have the usb and keyboard in or just the freezer or usb stick at a time. So there is my set up which makes much easier for school work.

Do hey realize how much money they lost not having the Premium cover at launch?
Or any of the travel covers?
Prefer OEM accessories over third party any day but lately a lot of them have been pretty lame (Apple's offerings included)... don't even start with the Verizon Galaxy Nexus.
The POGO dock looks real sleek... $50 is a bit high but I would still probably buy this. Thank you ASUS for coming through with these accessories and hey we even got street dates!
Looking forward to the premium case. Perfect

Premium case is still worthless if they do not add the smart cover. If they include the smart cover than I would love the orange one.

That dock will replace the iHome
No speakers on the dock, so it's a fifty dollar piece of angled plastic? For 20 I might buy this, without speakers it seems kinda.....bleh. I guess I will have to wait for some aftermarket accessories. Anyone know of any different docks, other than the backward facing dock and the Gear 4 dock?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Dock does look nice, but bit overpriced for just a "stand".
I really hope that premium cover has the smart function built into it or else it is just as worthless as the travel cover.
does anyone know if the dock has mhl support?
if the travel cover = the cover on the nexus site, no thanks, if it = the cover on the nexus site + smart feature, maybe, if it = the cover on the site + smart cover + some sort of magnetic latch I could be very interested.
the dock would be nice, $50 is a bit steep but really to not have to plug my device in each time, it might be worth it, if they were $25 or $30 I'd probably buy 3....
Hopefully more info comes out about the premium case, looks like what I'm looking for, book style, clips to hold it in, smart cover that can be a stand.
Can't say i'm that hopeful though, looking at the Target Date of the travel cover it was 7/16, so there at least 2 weeks late on that, hopefully someone comes through soon, i've got a sleeve coming just for protection until a nicer case comes out.
The dock is expensive for what little features it offers, personally I probably still will buy one (or a cheaper 3rd part equivalent) to be able to charge the N7 and have an OTG cable plugged in at the same time.

Since the micro-usb port doesn't support MHL it's a very good bet that the dock doesn't either. In that regard I'd wait for the Miracast standard to be finalised, afterwards it should be a simple matter of a software update to the N7 and a HDMI dongle that can be plugged into a TV or monitor.
Hey guys/gals,
Thought i would share my most recent project with you all in the hopes of getting some advice and feedback and showing off my install
This will be an incremental build thread, i'll add to it as i get more pics and work my way through some issues.
I have installed a Google/Asus nexus 7 in the dash of my MY00 Subaru WRX. I trialled the optus mytab (AKA ZTE V9) in the dash but it didn't last more than a day since it was a piece of crap performance and audio-wise.
After spending a few months building a nano-itx double din touch screen pc to go in the dash, i changed my mind (for the millionth time) and decided to stick an android in there instead. The intel PC is now sitting in a box at home doing nothing...
The biggest trouble was finding a tablet that would fit in below the A/C controls nicely.. in the end, the N7 was about 3mm too big bit i broke out the dremel and made it fit!
Having trouble with the audio output though, it is horrible... it buzzes every time i touch the screen and it buzzes when wifi is active and it is just generally crap.
I would like to plug in a USB soundcard (DAC), something like the Fiio E10 but then i wouldn't be able to charge the tab while USB OTG is active.
I was hoping that the pogo pins on the side would allow charging whilst the USB dock connector could be used for OTG but it doesn't look like it will work since both the pogo pins and USB connector go to the same usb switch internally.
another edit: there seems to be a thread on the charging issues... i have also just found that my tab drains it's battery faster than it can charge it... I'll have to look into this further: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1791717

To hold the tablet in place, i have used some metal straps cut to size that are screwed on using the screws that hold the top of the ash tray to the dash fascia. I stuck some velcro on to the metal straps and 2 small strips on the back of the tablet to dampen vibration and stop the tablet sliding around sideways. The velcro also stops the metal straps from marking the back of the tablet (not that it matters since it is hidden behind the dash)
You can see how it is done in the pictures above. Also, I am using right-angle micro USB and audio connectors so that they fit nicely in the dash
My blog of the install is here: Finniss.net

I'm not talented enough to do this to my car. I just have to lay my tablet on the passenger seat.
I'm not that talented either but will just end up using a dremel and some Velcro or something lol
I have a huge double din slot so I won't have to do much cutting at all I will have to buy a cheap 40$ radio to put where my 6 disc CD changer in so I an use that as my AUX input as I am not buying an amp using stock speakers plus I would like to use FM just for sometimes you know lol and possible CDs

It's not a slide in/out setup like i would love it to be but the plastic surround around it easily pulls off and the tab can then be removed.

This is actually why I bought the nexus 7. I have a car pc now with an 8" lcd but it fried itself a month ago. Just haven't gotten around to figuring out how to mount the Nexus 7. Bluetooth works great in my truck via my JVC deck. I stream from my phone all the time. I just wish there was a Google Now "car home". It'd be really nice to have voice control over everything with a decent looking interface.
You got me interested. Keep up the work. Can't wait to see the final setup.
I'm going to be leaving my stock radio intact, and using a ProClip mount. That way it will still look good and I'll still have a radio, and cd player.
Actually, the proclip for my car installs in a matter of seconds and disappears just as fast, so it will still retain the stock look.
I've already run an ipod2car to my changer inputs, then converted that so I can use it as an ipod cable, or an aux in. Then I plug in an htc stereoclip into the aux in for bluetooth. So it will be wireless to the factory deck. All of that stuff is hidden in the dash so all I have exposed is the little aux input and the bluetooth receiver.
I have to do it this way because my radio is in a piece that goes all the way across the dash, and isn't in a modular center console piece that I can pop out and work with. So If I put it "in" the dash.. it would be permanent and I'd have to do all the amps.
I'll post pictures once they make the mount for the nexus and I get it in. For now it just rides in the passenger seat.
The gauges are from an app called Torque, and it uses a bluetooth OBD2 reader that can be found on amazon. It's good for getting some basic numbers, and even allows logging. But there is a slight delay and well, it isn't much compared to my HP Tuners for my car but that's not saying much. it is definitely a must have for any car installations.
Idk I might not end up doing it I think my timing belt is more important along with getting my exhaust fixed....
Plus its an Asus Tablet and I had bad experiences with them with the prime....
Plus me being 17 and just getting my lisence idk if I should be distracted while driving
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
I am interested in this as well.. I just put a cheap double din DVD player in my 01 forester and I would totally send it back and use that $200 to buy a nexus 7.. I just want to figure out how I could mount it and still be able to remove it with out taking the dash apart.. The other thing is what is the best way to get your audio to your speakers if you dont have a amp installed? I guess I could just get a small cheap amp if I needed to.
I'm running a Samsung galaxy tab in the dashboard of my Kia soul, 2010 sport model, for over a year now.
A lot of whine and stuff to the stereo, but then I got a 3.5 mm cable with a ground loop isolator on it. Did you get one of those? It solved my problems.
A couple members on my website, soulhamsters.com, are also using Nexus seven and other tablets in their dashboards.

I have succesfully modded a Note cardock to work on my Note II. I had to put a small piece of Velcro to use as a shim at the bottom, and grind the bottom corners to allow the phone to go further down so it could make contact with the charging port. Works great. Got the dock off Amazon for $30
Edit: 2/6/13
I have been using this mod for a while now but have not been completely satisfied with it. Especially with the way that the micro usb jack was seating into the phone. so I decided to try and solve that issue which solved a couple of other issues... I will explain.
1.Remove the screws from the back of the sliding bottom from the back as shown
2.Then take an exacto knife and gently slide it in the edge and twist opening the tabs as well as the bottom.
3.Remove the 4 screws holding the module board in place and remove board.
4.Shave off the thickness of the circuit board from the standoffs that the board mounts on. if you take a little extra on the tow closest to the front it will tip the jack a bit so you don't need the Velcro shim any longer.
5.Remove the four screws that hold the slider to the mount
6.Take a ratt tailed file and thin out the bottom of the cradle.
7.Reassemble
You now will find that each and every time you insert it into the cradle it will go into your favorite docking program. Mine is CarHome Ultra. You also will have audio coming from the 1/8" jack on the back.
Here is a video link of it in action... http://db.tt/GV1RJwY3
From what I can tell the micro usb jack was not getting fully into the phone causing it to not work as designed. I will also mention that I am on Perseus alpha32 kernel which has been modded to work with docking stations on JB.
I hope you can appreciate this tutorial because I did take the time to un assemble my dock for you just to put these pics online
Hit Thanks if you Like...

I love a good hack that saves me money but to answer everyone's question, this is NOT a solid solution!!! I have a Note 1 and a Note 1 Samsung Card Dock.
First, getting it in and out of the dock is not easy. You have to line it up just right. Sure a little filing will help with that, but then you loose a little grip. So in the end the only thing holding the phone is the top tension and the tension you apply on the USB plug via the Velcro Shim.
Last of all, I could not get the Audio over USB to work. I did not see anyway to get the GNII to see that it had been placed in a car dock. This might require an additional download but I found nothing on Playstore that supported my phone.
BTW: I tested on the International Version.
Would love to agree with this hack, but just can't
-
So after using this for a few days now I will say the phone fits in just fine I drive 30 miles day and have not had a problem with the phone falling out.
In fact it fits very tight, although I did a little filing on the top tabs. It fits tight enough that you can hear it snap in. It is a great solution and the above poster is stating an opinion. It will not read the phone as being docked because this phone is not capable of that feature. There are topics on this. I do use car ultra home which solves this solution for me. It is ten times better than a universal holder. I will work on a video for you this weekend.
Haven't had a second phone to do the video with yet but been several weeks and I still use it everyday.
The speaker output does work. You have to turn it on in settings/accessories.

I just purchased one of the Note I docks off e-Bay for $15. I made the modification and it charges just fine...but I'm not getting any audio out through the jack on the back of the dock. I've changed the setting in accessories to "Use external speakers when device is docked"...but I don't get any sound. Is there anything else I need to do? I'm replacing my Galaxy SII (same style dock) and I really want to be able to feed Pandora and Google music directly to the aux input on my car stereo.... just as I did with the SII.
Thanks!

I was not able to get the AUX out to work with the car dock. However, I was able to come up with what has turned out to be an even better solution. I'm still using the car dock (original Note dock) for power.
However, I purchased an item from eBay. (just do a search for "Wireless Bluetooth Audio Music Receiver 3.5mm Dongle For Cell Phone MP3 MP4 PC"). This unit is under $10!
With this item...I simply connected via bluetooth from the phone...then connected this unit to the AUX input for my car stereo and works great...and sounds great.
Do you think a Note 2 with a Flip-cover will fit this solution?
Looks like it does, but I'm not sure.
really hope to find a car holder that will fit the Note 2 with a Flip-cover.

Mine storage only so I'm soldering a microSD reader straight to a microUSB plug, which lets me make it a little smaller.
I'll solder the reader on backwards as in the photo so it hopefully wraps around the back of the device. Bull i'll fix it in place once I have the N10 and can measure it up etc.
EDIT: Electronics are done, just need to package it now, nice and neat.
See new image attached, connected to my SGS3.

@alias_neo, nice. If you're going for soldering method and don't plan to use (female USB for controller, mouse, ect.). There is one even smaller here.

Yeh, I have a few smaller ones myself but none that I wanted to sacrifice to this project. I've not heat-shrink wrapped the wires and will encase the connector properly tonight.
I have the proper microUSB ecasings for the connector, but it's huge and I want to keep it small so i might make one from ... wood? Who knows.
Update: version v.2
My Solution
Here's my version of a compact micro-usb otg adapter.

I also like the way you retained the female USB for game controllers, mouse, microSD, ect. I turned the female USB to the side, when plugged-in it's only half the size of the female USB.
Yeah, I considered putting the female usb port at a 90 degree angle, to keep it from sticking out too much, but I realized that would significantly limit the number of devices I could plug into it based on the width of their usb plugs. The one unfortunate thing about my adapter is that the female port is fairly shallow, so whatever you plug into it, tends to stick out an extra 1/8 inch or so. However, a deeper female port probably wouldn't have fit as nicely without using a larger lego brick, so its a reasonable trade-off.
After your inspiration im hopefully going to do something similar to you and one other member on here and go straight from micro usb to micro sd. Although it may be 4x2 lego brick size!
You might be able to fit that in a 2x3 if you can find a small enough microsd slot/board.

How is it limit the number of devices you can plugged into? It's only half the size of stripped female USB. It's perfect for small profile devices like a phone. The only downside is in depth it's twice the size as your when laying the female USB on it's surface. But the trade off is worth it because you'll be holding your device and you want it to be as small as possible. If you're using a stand, it's even better.

I don't actually have my N10 yet, but this picture using my Galaxy Tab 10.1 should illustrate the problem with the 90 degree design.
As you can see, this thumb drive i significantly fatter than the lego brick. If I had used the 90 degree design, there's no way I would have been able to plug it into the tablet with the thumb drive attached.
Now I plan to mostly use this adapter with really small devices like this:
http://www.amazon.com/elago-Mobile-microSDHC-Memory-Reader/dp/B002HGFKR8
For that device, the 90 degree design would probably work ok, but I wanted to still have the option of using fatter devices occasionally if the need arises, so I decided not to use the 90 degree layout.

Now, I understand what you meant but that isn't true. The device in the picture is Nexus 7, v.1 and v.2 works perfectly with any USB devices. These was build with a case-on in mind, it will take a thumbdrive.
aaaa
Since we're building for the smallest form factor of storage; Micro USB OTG to USB Adapter. It's only logical to buy the smallest USB microSD and it's only cost a $1.
I've tried a whole bunch (7) of adapters and none of them seem to charge the device. Not sure why?
Bottom line they need to work and be of decent quality - last 3-5 years.
I'm looking for a power adapter (Micro to USB Male) like the one below.
See image.

If I can get the Micro adapter part to have a downward 90 degree angle as seen below that would be incredible.
Casey
Anyone have any clue how to pull this off?
Thanks!
Bulky but how about:

I just bought one - I will keep you posted on whether it works with the NEXUS 7.
Any other ideas?
Thanks!
subscribed. Please let us know when you get it.
Thanks!
I went to Fry's early on Friday to get a few items and picked up one of these while I was there:

Simple, cheap (well, $6 is cheap compared to some cable pricing I've seen), and it works flawlessly. Got it home, installed StickMount on the N7, plugged in a SanDisk Cruzer Fit micro-USB-Flash stick (about the size of a dime) and it sees the 16GB Cruzer Fit without issues, plugged in my Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer, then a plain old USB keyboard, a few various USB sticks from various manufacturers and of various sizes, even a tiny microSD card USB adapter as well and it works without issues.
And yes, it allows charging as well. I have a "homemade" 5v 2A charger cable I made using an extra 5V 2A charger I had for some other device long ago and kept the charger, guess that worked out now that I have a use for it.
I got this Nexus 7 from craigslist for $25 a few days ago (previous owner dropped it and chipped a corner but there's no damage other than cosmetic and maybe a tiny 1/2" area in the upper right corner that doesn't respond to touch now, not a big hassle since I use Paranoid Android and the tablet UI so the notification bar and settings are at the bottom). Got a case designed for a Nook Color for $10 and will mod it so the N7 fits like a glove, literally.
So far so good...
Kinda confused- how does this allow for charging as well? Did you hack it up after you got it home? The ones that I have seen that allow charging are y-cables.
Thanks
What I mean is that when I've got the USB OTG cable plugged in, I usually have the N7 attached to a 7-port powered USB hub that I own (Belkin) so I can attach a mouse/keyboard/etc to the N7 and in the process it's being charged from the hub. The 5V 2A adapter I have has had its cable spliced where I attached a male USB plug on it; I may end up redoing that cable to add a microUSB end as well in which case I would then be able to plug it directly into the N7.
I don't have the factory Asus charger with this N7 I got off craigslist, and I'm sure as hell not paying $25+ for one if I already have a 5V 2A adapter that works just fine in its place.
Is this what you were looking for? I bought this one and it works well for me.
