Recently bought an iMac and sold my defunked laptop. Never really gave any thought about having issues with Odin or Kies however I am now looling to flash 4.0.4 from 4.0.3.
Problems encountered are Kies not connecting to phone and Odin being for Windows PC (currently dont have windows installed on bootcamp).
Anyone have any sugestions?

Try with hiemdall
Odin can only be used with windows, heimdall is the cross platform program
But google about it before using
Got it downloaded but not had time to really do anything yet. Was really hoping that someone would have an answer the make Kies work as that would be easier for doing my fiances S2 as well.

As a mac user, my experience has been to not even attempt flashing of roms directly from within OS X. I typically use another windows machine or use Parallels desktop and run Windows from that. Bottcamp is an option as well. If you decide on a rom like CM9,good news is that once you have done the initial flashing of a safe kernel via PC Odin in Windows, you can do all subsequent updates via CWM.
If you are concerned about ongoing syncing of media, there are workarounds for getting Kies to work in Mountain Lion or use other apps such as iSync to sync with itunes.
Good luck.

I use Mobile Odin on the Note and just copy the stock ROM to the SD-Card (from my Mac with the Note mounted as an external drive or Wireless KIES).

Unfortunately, this cannot be installed on Mountain Lion (if it is installed in Lion before upgrading to 10.8.x, it still works).

I'm just saying that someone posted a link to KIES for Mac but the OP asks about flashing ROMs from OSX 10.8.1. You can use KIES to copy the ROM to the SDCard (external) if you mount the Note as a drive on the Mac using USB mode. BUT, if KIES isn't already no the Mac and you're running 10.8.x, then Samsung's installer refuses to install KIES for Mac (incorrectly, I might add, because I had KIES already installed and then upgraded to 10.8 from 10.7.x and KIES still worked).
As an alternative, you can use KIES WIFI (launch from the Note) and then connect to it from your Mac. Use that to copy the ROM (tar file) to the SDCard and flash with Mobile ODIN (downloadable from Google Play; I purchased the full version but I believe the free version will also accomplish this much).
Hey guys. Cheers again to all posts. I resulted to digging out my old and dusty laptop and after a few hours updating it i managed to get kies onto it and run the update through it.

I tried plugging my phone to a usb port on my computer using my usb cable/charger on my computer and on my phone, it gives me the option to mount it as a disc drive. I press yes to that, and the computer tries to install the driver software but keeps failing. I think this happened recently since i don't recall it trying to install the driver software for it. It works for other phones with their charger/usb cables just not for mine. It could possibly be my usb cable/charger but i don't think so. It its good condition. So what driver software, if that's an issue, would i need for it to work? Otherwise, i tried switching usb ports and updating them via device manager, so i don't know what else i could try.
What rom are you running? What os?
You probably need the Google USB_drivers that get installed with the sdk. If you search for "stand alone Google USB_driver" you can install it without the sdk.

You also should try mounting through your recovery. If that doesn't work then you may have a bigger issue.

When I try to use Heimdall it says "failed to detect compatible device". I looked all around and even posted my problem in some threads but did not get any result. My final goal is to get to CM9.
I wanted to post my problem in general forum but I did not wan to break rules of the forum. Please help, any assistance is appreciated.

My problem is heimdall. My pc is getting drivers for the tab for Haimdall to work. I tried pretty much everything with no luck. Since I had lots of experience with Odin. I am comfortable flashing trough Odin. But all the guides that I found recently is for Heimdall for some reason. I will try to use Heimdall on different pc(same win7 64bit) to see if that works. If not I need to find a way to flash it trough Odin.
you should really try to put ubuntu on usb stick.
Just download the iso of the latest and get unetbootin (free apps for windows too).
Use it to create USB stick, and it has option to leave spare space on the USB disk to allow for changes to be written on.
Boot it up and install heimdall.
I have soft bricked my galaxy tablet and I need help on how to un-do it, I have tried almost everything. PLEASE HELP.

Go to sammobile.com. you have to register but it's free. You can get the stock roms there. You'll download a zip file. Use 7-zip to extract the .tar.md5 file and use that in odin. Use odin v1.85.

You'll need to put a custom recovery on your tab using Odin. Flash it just like the stock rom. Then you'll need to flash superuser-busy box thru the custom recovery. Download that on you tab. I have the files on dev host and I'll post links for you when I get on my pc.

I can't connect my device to a computer. I have tried with Kies installed and also installed a driverpack I found. The computer just says it can't recognize the device. I am using a usb cable from a galaxy tab 10.1 but that can be the problem, or can it?
I have rooted the device and app root checker says it's rooted correctly. And my problem is that I can't get cwm recovery into it. I have a new rom from cm on SD card but can't flash it because of cwm isn't installed. I need the computer to find the device to be able to get cwm into it with Odin.
Can someone please help me with this problem? Thankful for any help or suggestions. Excuse if my English as misspellings.

Yes, likely you need original cable.
And since you are rooted, check if you have protected bootloader.
Read here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=888071

I have unlock the bootloader successfully.
Is there any other way to get cwm into the device other than using Odin, or can it be done without cwm? I have a 4.3 cm rom and googleapp pack on sdcard.

Sorry, I misread.
Is Kies installed? If yes then remove (or disable) it because Odin and Kies don't work well together (they might use the same serial port and that causes issues with Odin). Install just the Samsung USB drivers.
[Q] Why use Kies when using Odin with Windows OS
Posted on March 25, 2012 by tinieblax
I have tried for over a week to flash my SGS2 with Odin from both Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows XP Pro SP3 with no success. I followed instructions to install Kies so that windows installed the Samsung drivers. I closed Kies down and checked that no part of it was running in process by using Task Manager. Odin appeared to run and then hang, somtimes completing with the dread Red colour and Failed! legend. I tried everything. Battery out SIM out. Still no success.
Then I hit on a link to download the Samsung drivers without Kies. I also found references to the fact that Odin and Kies don’t play nice!
So, as it happens my power sockets developed an electrical problem which caused my desktop hard disk to fail. I installed a new OS on a new HDD and this time just the Samsung drivers, NO KIES, then Odin etc. And voilla! The first time I flashed a big green success! I can hardly believe this problem has not been already proved. It seems to apply equally to XP and 7!
