Im looking for a small backpack for when I want to travel ultra light and just have my nexus 7, plus a few other bits and pieces.
I already have a 13" laptop backpack.. the only things I can seem to find online that are small in size are messenger style bags... as I do a lot of cycling to get about, I prefer backpacks though as messenger bags tend to swing about a bit whilst cycling.
Any links would be much appreciated!

Belkin Slim Backpack?
How about a small modular style deployment bag like this one? They're good for small tech kits, are available from lots of places, and don't just come in camo.

No mention of cost so I will recommend chrome bags. I have 3 different styles that I use and they are well known for making bags that work well for bike couriers.
I use my most recent bag from them, victor, just as you describe. It is just big enough for my nexus, a few cables, a usb thumb drive and a wifi hotspot. The main pocket secures with wide strips of good, strong, durable velcro. I have no problem trusting it.
However, if you need something a little more versatile and secure, I would suggest getting a mini-metro. I have one of these as well and use it for anything and everything when I need a little more space than the victor. It is probably the best of the three that I have for cycling due to an extra strap that goes under the arm to keep the bag from moving. This one is a bit bigger than what you need but doesnt really seem big unless you stuff it.
I have the classic messenger also, but it is less secure/ loose so I would not recommend it for use as you have described unless you are just carrying stuff a short distance. This one is not as ideal for cycling.
Here are a few pics of the victor with the stuff I carry in it:

I got this free when ordering summer gear and held my old Viewsonic Gtab well with accessories like headphones. Great little sling bag. I also have an old Oakley sling bag as well that is well made besides the zipper lol. Other than that, this lil thing rocks.

Check out the Camelbak Mule or Lobo. (sorry, they won't allow me to post a link) I have the mule and it works great. If you don't need the water reservoir you can use that pocket for your nexus 7, it is padded and fits in nicely. That leaves the main compartment for other things and the small pocket for keys, wallet, etc.

I did read it, but I'm still going to recommend a messenger... The timbuk2 ipad mssenger is really good, and the strap tightens up so that it doesn't swing and actually sites really nicely on your back. The cushioned pouch is way big for the N7, and there's also a decent sized main compartment. On top you get a passport pocket, card holders, and a zip compartment with more slips inside it. Yet it's really small! I am amazed at how much I carry with this thing. IT's become my work bag, holiday bag, and festival bag all in one. I got it from Dell for £50 in the UK.
I know it's supposed to be backpack related, but I don't think that you'll have an issue with swing on this one, and it really is amazing quality for the money.
Having read this thread though, I really want the Chrome Victor too. Looks awesome.
I use a Kifaru E&E for the purpose you mention. It is more like a pouch with straps. Light and very well built.

I like that one. I have been looking at getting a maxpedition fatboy versapack eventually but this seems to be a contender for the same category. I will have this one bookmarked for when the Microsoft Surface Pro comes out.
Thanks for all the links guys, Im going to check them out this evening
Ok, so I've checked them all out.
The Belkin slim too big for my purposes... I already have the incase which is great, but Im now looking for something smaller. Ive shortlsted the following (btw, I didnt realise there was such a thing as a 'slingback' until today, these also seem to fit the purpose as the sit on the back) :-
Chrome Victor
Timbuk 2 catapult sling
Camelbak mini-mule or lobo
Eddie bauer slingpack
So these should give an idea of what I'm after if anybody else has anything else to suggest.... thanks in advance!
Are you in the US or Canada?
Take a look at daypacks for rock climbing - the smallest ones are usually big enough for a pair of climbing shoes, a water bottle, a chalk bag and a couple of snacks. You won't carry any of those, really, but the point is they're small packs.
In Canada, MECs got a few choices: http://www.mec.ca/AST/ShopMEC/Packs...newSortType=price&newSortOrder=ascending#list (sort by price, lowest to highest). The Blitz Crag Daypack is only 7.5L (450 cu. in).
You can probably find something similar in the States at REI or EMS.
Why not try looking for net book accessories. They're pretty small and will probably do the trick.
This one is leather so it might not be exactly what you're looking for.
Amazon
How about a street pack from Dakine? They're small, well made, and usually come with a lifetime warranty. I'm thinking the 13L would be a good bet. It's cheap too!

Thank you for these pictures. Forgive me though, is this actually a 2 piece case?
It appears to me that the folding piece is actually separate from the actual case that hold the tab?
Slightly confused, but this does look like a winner.

I agree with this. If you look at the second pic, its seems as thick as there nexus tabs stacked on top of each other.
Although this does seem nicer than most.
It is 2 piece which allows for landscape or portrait standing. Its thick but not too thick, it just adds protection and makes it easier to hold.

The only thing it has ever gotten in my way when doing is moving widgets between home screens. Sometimes my finger hits the case before triggering the blue line to jump to the next homescreen. I dont have this issue with drawing apps or games, only when moving icons or widgets. I just have to roll my finger or move my finger up and down the side to get it to work.

No regrets. I noticed a stitch around the screen is a little frayed but that is all. The hinge seems like will last a long time. You do have to train the hinge to set flat when you are in kickstand mode but mine does it naturally now. With nova launcher installed and almost all my apps have a landscape mode, I dont rest it in portrait mode much but at some point I will need to and I will be glad I can.

I got the red case and I like it so much I just bought the black one. I really hate things that bulk up my devices but there has to be a compromise sometimes on protection and bulk. This case has protection with minimal bulk. I can of course put the tab in portrait or landscape. If I really wanted to I could just take it out of the case easy. I have front and back protection on it from Xtreme guard. Loving this case! Oh yea magnet works great too for waking and putting to sleep. PeAcE
I just brought the same case but it doesnt rotate and it comes with a stylus and a stylus holder built into the case. Overall its great build quality and works perfectly. Im not too happy with the stylus but hey it came free lol
Not feeling it myself, but thanks for taking the time to make this post with the photos to help me decide.

Got mine today....not really liking it that much. The cut of the inner sleeve leaves the tablet crooked unless you REALLY force it in there and stretch the leather, also on mine the holes for the mic and speaker don't line up exactly as they should. They aren't FAR off but they aren't spot on either. I also thought I wouldn't mind that the inner sleeve is only attached to the outer case by velcro...but I do. It just doesn't leave me with a "it's definitely secure and won't fall out" type of feeling. I do like the auto on/off feature though, works exactly as advertised! Fast shipping too!

First, that's not a Samsung Galaxy NOTE stylus. That's a Samsung Galaxy Tab stylus which is an entirely different technology. The Note's stylus is an active stylus capable of things like pressure sensitive writing with a fine tip (as opposed to the other sausage-tipped styli that just pretend they're your finger).
As far as the difference between the ones you point out go.... performance varies from person to person and device to device, so you've really just got to try some and see if they work well with the Nexus and your particular writing style. Just make sure that the tip is firm enough that the body of the pen can't hit the screen while you write.
And if you're hoping that writing with any capacitive stylus will be just like writing with a real pen....then neither of them will be good for you since they can't handle that type of precision (you usually need to write large letters that programs shrink down). The type of styli used with the Galaxy Note are the only ones that can actually handle this, but there aren't any for use with the Nexus.
I'm using the Kensington Virtuoso Touch, there are a couple of threads on this forum giving links to reviews of various styluses that tell you why the better ones are 'better'.
I'm using these (In the picture) with my Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 which both have xtreme guard screen protectors on them. They work perfectly. They aren't pressure sensitive or anything extravagant like that, but they write well and draw well. That's what I was looking for. I like that I can lose them and it doesn't matter since they are dirt cheap.
I purchased these in an 8 pack. 4 Large and 4 small for my phone. They are all identical in build quality which is good. Made out of aluminum.
I also own a few other stylus (Bamboo, Cosmonaut) which are good but compared to price/performance for me, these are the best I've used.

Yea don't waste your money on a stylus outside of a few bucks. I almost purchased a $20 stylus at Microcenter then while checking out, they had the exact same one for $3. I tested both and both felt the same.
Outside of acting like I can draw anything good on a tablet (or on paper for that matter) they are a fad. I also don't take notes with a pen.
Just invest money in a good keyboard from the market and practice thumb typing. Or buy a little Bluetooth thumb keyboard off eBay for $5 which also doubles as a handy gamepad for emulators.
Capacitive screens just aren't good for fine tuned motor skills required for writing. The tablets that have pens like the Note use a combination of technologies that let it be much more precise.
I also think the pens come separate and cost a good chunck of change (~$50?). The HTC Flyer does it that way. I just can't see writing with a stylus on a 5" screen.

to be honest, they are almost the same, i emailed amazon back and want to return the stylus, told them that it felt no different than the 1 dollar one my buddy got, they told me to keep it and will give me my money back, i told the csr that it won't be necessary and they issued the credit anyway
i don't recommend anyone doing this with the intention of asking amazon for a refund but they did do the right thing for me

I bought the Kensington Virtuoso Touch Stylus + Pen and replaced the pen with a Parker fine black refill. Works great and nice weight to it.
I'm not gonna lie, I bought one of those dollar store styluses yesterday and... Using my Nexus 7 is a LOT more fun with a stylus than without. I was pleasantly surprised
I've had the Kensington for a couple of weeks now and I'm using it more and more, it's really fast and accurate for typing, keeps the fingerprints down and the inbuilt Parker pen is great.
My Nexus 7 case is one of those cases with a small pen holder and I was thinking if it could be possible to use that holder to attach a strap to it and thus wear the whole tablet around the neck when I'm out and about and need both hands free.
Anyone ever think of this or has done it successfully? I'm not sure that small pen holder will actually be strong enough for prolonged use, but maybe you guys have a better idea that doesn't involve another case?
Just thinking out loud here..

Practical reasons, of course. Yesterday at work I went outside to stretch my legs and I usually take the tablet with me when I do that. So when I was reading stuff, my boss asked me to help him carry some stuff. I needed both hands for that. Is that practical enough?

Yeah, I was just thinking that if I already had a case maybe I could multi-purpose it Carrying a shoulder bag all the time just in case I need it isn't ideal
Just put it in your purse.
I wouldn't trust the little lanyard strap on a case to hold the weight of it bouncing around your neck. Some cases have a hand strap where you could reverse it on your back of your hand to hold something. Alternatively an arm band may be better suited.
What about a belt holster even?

I usually use an armband and a bluetooth headset!
Here:http://dx.com/s/armband+case+Galaxy Read these reviews before you are going to place an order.
I still haven't decided on whether or not I want to take mine into the gym. Thanks for the link though, it'll help me make my decision.

I am a loyal "tunebelt" fan and have used them since I had an HP Ipaq HX4700 about 8 years ago, I have an e-mail into them now asking what they have for the note 2. It will likely be their universal ab85 case but I will come back to this thread if/when I get an armband. i will also follow this thread to see what others come up with.
The items I see on amazon have a lot of plastic-y parts on the arm part, my tune belts have always been all neoprene with a plastic window, not the most "air flow" material. I cant bring myself to use one of these "packs".
Cant wait to develop the "note 2 farmer tan" lol.
I am waiting for my VZW Note 2 and I realized that for my kind of physical activities (Mtn Biking(Dirt Jumping specifically), Skiing, cycling) I am better off busting out my old iPod touch.. I dirtjump on my bike and I have broken 4 phones so far and I have learned my lesson.. I have an old iPod touch that I leave sitting in my car as my Music Hub with ~3000 songs on it that has turned into my "There is a possibility of killing this electronic device doing this activity" Device..
On my phones I use Spotify 95% of the time, but I figure I will just download a playlist of 200 songs I listen to most, on top of my already existing library and call it good.. If I am on the way to go ride, I can just kick up my hotspot and download music to the iPod then (less then ideal, but works)
Pros-
- I dont have to worry about breaking my pretty new N2.
- iPod is about half the size and the battery lasts 10x as long
- If I break my 6 year old iPod, I am not really any worse for the wear..
-Doesnt look like I have a cookie sheet hanging on my arm or in my back pocket..
Cons
- I cant use Spotify anywhere..
- Another device to manage..

HA! large phone joke. too easy.
Does anyone else have any input on this? I really want to get a armband for this. I don't care how silly it looks. I get the last laugh while watching movies on my mini tv from my arm lol. I don't actually plan on watching anything but just having it secure on my arm rather then my pockets is what I am after.
i've been using one from ebay, seller named shimshop and the item is called "SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 2 II N7100 LTE SPORTS GYM RUNNING ARMBAND POUCH CASE COVER" and it works well. the only thing is that the headphone hole doesn't line up exactly with it, but you can simply fix that with a little cut with some scissors, the material doesn't rip more than what you cut, so dont worry about that.
Got this one for $5 shipped on Amazon.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009VOISGY/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00
It recently arrived. Shipping took a little longer (2-3 weeks) than expected but it works fine. It's a little tight with a TPU case on so I had to take it out and slip it in bare. :good: The padding is sufficient for me.
17 - 31 days for shipping? Damn that's a bit too long for me.

I too having been scouring retail stores looking for an armband for my Note 2.
I'd love one that has an extra spot for a key, there's so much real estate that comes with a note 2 armband, whats a little storage? The above link looked promising but that's way too long to ship.

I mentioned above an ebay seller who I recently bought my armband from, this armband came with a key slot, my key fits very snug.
I also bought the amazon one that kipghost linked. I bought this one first before the ebay armband. The amazon armband's velcro wasn't as secure as I'd like, but the phone does fit well without any tpu case. I ordered mine from the $0.01 +shipping seller. One problem I noticed was that my volume keys kept getting pushed while I ran, turning up the volume really high or off randomly.

So I ended up buying this one, got it in 11 days, so quicker than I expected. Going to try it out tomorrow.
EDIT: The band popped loose on my first rep at the gym. I can see this thing maybe working for cardio workouts for me, but not lifting. I don't know how big my biceps are but if you buy this and you try it on and only have the end of the strap coming through the loop before finding back over, it's unlikely it will work for you too.

I have a Sprint Note 2 and would like to mount in in my Dodge Dakota Quad cab so i can record while i drive, is there a mount that can do that? I just want to record a few short videos and would rather not have a tripod in the back, and moves too much when the truck "drifts and slides" when i want it too. Thanks all, ps hopefully under $40 ish?

No its not a SRT i wish i had one, it was a factory v6 truck but since i bought it i swapped a 360 ci with aluminum heads, ported intake and headers. New tune for 93 octane, also the trans has a trans go shift kit, rear end was rebuilt with 3.55 gears and a eaton locker. Lets just say leaving my high school i like to go fast what student wouldnt leave school when the bell rings and leave a few black marks? Haha i miss those days.

This should work for you:
http://www.arkon.com/megagrip/megagrip-sticky-dash-mount.html
[click thumb]
$20 + shipping from arkon.com, you might be able to find it cheaper on Amazon.
See the Iottie thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1982558
I picked one up and it's awesome for the Note2. The suction cup is the strongest one I've ever seen and I don't think it'll ever fall off.
I just got am Arkon from EBay.
Mounts right onto the windshield and holds my phone like a boss.
Have the auxiliary cable hooked up. Plays all my music, can hear calls over my car speakers, use s voice to function everything hands free.
All with the phone being directly to the right of my eye vision.
Great mount. I've had 4 others and the Arkon is the best.

I've used the Arkon ones before and before getting the Note2, I was using one, but that one blocks the camera, so if you wanted to use a dash cam program, it wouldn't work.
Got the IBolt and works great. There is a included usb plug which is semi flexible that sits right where it needs to be plugged in which automatically puts the phone in dock mode. They say they are sending out a replacement plug for free which will split and include audio out and usb charging. You can record video there is nothing blocking the camera. It can be used with a case.

If you're recording you might like Torque app. Can do pretty cool screen overlays with speed etc. You can even link it to a cheap odb2 adapter to get engine data overlays
That looks nice.
I bought a Lottie and you are right the suction cup will not let go, trust me i tried ( was wet and slightly drifted a off ramp XD, but wasnt recording ) I have the Torque app and use it sometimes, i love it but i have a little box thing, dont remember the name, but it tell me my trans temp, volts, etc anything i love it. Thanks for the replys everyone!

"little box thing" -> ELM 327 OBD2 bluetoth scan tool I got that along with Torque Pro. Hardly use it, but still think it's an awesome tool to get every bit of info about your car!
Should be getting iOttie sometime next week, and will review it. Once that review is done and posted, I will do face-off comparison between Arkon, Exogear, and iOttie - all three have similar mounts with gel-base suction cup that kicks arse, while phone holder part is different.
i couldnt find anything that would look decent, so i made mine:

i bought a 5 dollar holder from ebay, and 5 dollar worth of aluminum from home depot. used jb weld and spray paint.
I just ordered this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Car-Mount-H...A%2BFICS%2BUFI&otn=21&pmod=300857965016&ps=54
I'll report back on how well it works when I get it but, for $5.99, I figured I'd take a chance.

I ordered a 17 dollar Arkon.
Mounts directly to my windshield, holds this giant phone like a champ.
Got the AV hookes up, can hear phone calls, gps, music all through the car speakers.
Which is also my first car, a 2007 Chevy Cobalt SS.

I have reviewed Arkon and Exogear already, but after I just got iOttie - that one is clearly a winner for my needs. All three have a great gel base suction cup, but only iOttie offers true one hand operation. Arkon's advantage that it can hold either Note 2 or Nexus 7 (7" tablet). Exogear can hold any phone in width up to Note 2, more universal and less obstructive if you want to use it as dash camera. So each one has it's own advantages and disadvantages (I wish iOttie would use universal ball joint connection). But since my highest priority is one hand operation - IOttie wins in that department. I will post a detailed review and will probably make another face-off comparison thread between all 3.

Mine only had 3!!! It even had a "turbo boost" button, most people call it the AC button though. Now we're rocking a 2004 Honda Element that's driven from Kenai Alaska to Cocoa Beach Florida, and a 2012 Nissan Juke. Huuuuge upgrades! :good:

Careful with the sticky suction cups! I wanted to move mine from one car to another and the sticky jell crap stretched and tore on me. It won't stick to anything now. :crying: I'll stick with my Ram Mount equipment from now on. It costs a little more, but worth it in my opinion.
