This seems to have been built into all recent Motorola Phones way before ICS but the ICS recovery is the first program to display this info to the average user. It's nothing Moto couldn't retrieve before....

I can't argue about that, but now the store has a very quick way to say screw you we aren't helping. I will never go to the store for support because I can get better, faster and more accurate help on this forum. Its more so the principle on how Motorola is just finding more and more ways to drive people away.

Screw moto! That's why I got a gnex and would never buy a moto phone again! It is BS!

I'm willing to bet all ICS capable phones by all manufactures have this built in. The only difference is they may not choose to let you know it's there by letting it show up in the recovery screen.

Thats motorolla for you. I bought a used gnex took it to Verizon and it was unlocked and rooted with a custom rom. They did not even care they said I could still get Assurian insurance and just put it back to stock and re lock the boooader before sending it in. They did not even care at the store.

The reason it is harder to get info for unlocking bootloaders

Just FYI: I got off the phone with a bud of mine that works at Motorola. To be honest the reason I called him was I wanted the XML set for the Bionic and I was hoping he could slip it to me so I could get us setup.
To my dismay... he said this:
Ever since the thing with Google was announced EVERYTHING is on lockdown. There is no more swapping motorola devices back and forth between various project developers, everyone can only work on the devices they are assigned and the sensitive stuff is not allowed off site anymore.
Used to be he would come over to my house and unlock my bootloader. Not anymore.
So we can all thank Google for the tightened security at Motorola. Thanks G!
Interesting.

I would imagine they'd fire your friend or worse for what he's doing. I'm assuming they didn't know he was going out and unlocking BL's etc?
My thoughts are, with the patent wars, Google is trying to cover their ass right now. Until the proposed deal is approved, they are wanting to make sure that nothing slips thru the cracks that could be harmful to their cause in the hands of the opposition. Not to mention, they probably have some new devices in testing along with new hardware components that would be in Google's best interest not to have leaked until they are certified by the FCC. I am going to have to give Google the benefit of the doubt, and say until the deal is approved, they are doing what they can to cover their asses.

The Nexus devices are developers phones and the only Moto HC tablet is also a dev device. Not saying it is Google's fault, but it certainly still is a possibility. I personally believe it's the fascist ************s at VZW, and Moto is their lapdog.
That is the point. I would believe, Google would prefer a 'pure' experience on all devices. But, to convince manufacturers to build devices they let them skin it to personalize the experience. Expecting people to buy for their experience, not only their hardware.
I owned an Atrix (still do, but haven't been keeping up 100% lately and just switched to bionic) and if I remember correctly, the moto-google deal wasn't until a fair bit after the release of the Atrix and the unlock of the atrix came after the deal news first broke. I'm not saying this is necessarily proof of anything, but it's the opposite of what one would expect if the info in the OP is true.
Hasn't moto been kind of known for being a pain in the ass about locked bootloaders? I remember a lot of people had very little hope for the atrix being unlocked because of previous devices that never saw a full unlock.

All Android devices need continued os and bug fix updates

http://www.facebook.com/motorola?sk=wall&filter=1 click the link people like it and comment on it.
I have seen first hand proof of this working. I had an evo 3d. Htc decided all futre devices would have locked bootliaders well that made alot of people angry. Someone posted a thread on xda suggesting we let htc know that is not gna fly. So it turnd out thousands of people got on there facebook wall and twitter. Guess what the next day htc released a statement saying that they wanted too keep there coustamers happy and that the bootloader would be unlocked. They were. Id like to be able too have a device and not have too get a new one juzt because moto or htc or sammy wants too put them out constantly get people too buy them and then ditch them and out out another. The atrix is 100 percent capable of runing ics and theres no excuae for it l not too recieve it just because moto wants people too buy new devices every couple months. I know many many people feel the same way well as i said we have the power too change that if people would stop bickering and take it seriously. And also if moto started supporting devices longer not just bug fixes but the new android flavors. Id definately make my next device a moto it would do nothing but benefit them
Why are we discussing/petitioning something that we don't know? Has it been set in stone that manufacturers will not support us anymore or is this all stemming from paranoia?
Because it is the trend. And the atrix 2 has been released already. All the manufactures with the exception of sammy have been doing this more and more lately abandoning. Devices. And pumping out new ones. At a very fast pace
So you are saying they are not going to support the atrix anymore since they released the atrix 2? I'd rather wait till this actually happens before i draw a conclusion. e.g. when ICS gets released and they say they are not going to update the atrix.

No it is obvious support is going to be dropped for old models. But he is implying that models released this year will not get support.
I think for every $10 a phone costs over $50 on launch day (on contract) is how many months it should be updated for. So a $300 phone should be kept updated for 25 months. So this would either keep phone prices lower or keep them updated.
Facebook is a poor way of getting the attention of corporations. You want them to change? Buy a nexus phone. Money talks.

I think ICS only has support for Armv7 currently, so phones with those SoCs will get updated. However, phones using custom UIs will experience a longer waiting time, maybe around early Q1 of 2012. HTC has released like 1000 phones in the last few months and I doubt most will get ICS soon, not sure if Moto will bother at all. But it might be better to wait and actually see what goes down, like you said.
Has HTC in fact locked a boot loader or withheld hardware drivers?
I intend for my next phone to be HTC just because of the hell Samsung put us though trying to get GB on the i9000.

You can unlock them direct with HTC, but you loose all warranty. As per HTC.

Motorola unlocking bootloaders ??
you should check this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1316722
I had a motorola xt720.... not the best phone..but was ok. Motorola decided to stop supporting it within 4 months of launch or something stupid like that. No new updates no nothing. And still insisted on the bootloader staying locked so the dev's found it alot harder to do their job for them.
I will never ever buy a motorola product again.
The market is fairly competitive ... don't buy from companies that pull this crap

Fcc just called me about locked bootloader!

just got a call from gloria of the fcc saying that they are serving verizon wireless with violations of the locked bootloader on moto devices!

What did she ask you?
she asked me if I filed a complaint with moto or verizon, and I said both she said ok and followed with the fcc will be serving verizon accordingly on this issue. ended conversation with thank you have a nice day.

Personally I would be very skeptical about a call from the FCC. I (like you) am a nobody in the development world, more of a lurker. I just use and learn from all the hard work of the devs, and appreciate every bit of it.
vote with your wallet guys.
The Bionic is my last Motorola product...no matter how much I like Motorola. That goes for the 8.2 I also would like to get.
Motorola is lying (quite clearly) by blaming VZW. And VZW is probably lying also.
They can unlock the bootloaders if HTC and Samsung have both done it. They choose to ignore the ones who keep their phones at the frontline for development and ultimately I hope they fall on their sword.
If Google does indeed get the confirmation to buy them out, I hope some things change around the "M" headquarters....

Motorola isn't lying about VZW, and VZW doesn't deny it. Yes, they can unlock the phone, or allow it to be unlocked like those other phones on VZW, but that is the reason VZW has a huge marketing budget for Motorola phones and not so much for the others.
Either way, I agree. This is my last device with an encrypted bootloader. Moto, VZW whoever it is, is spitting in the face of Android with this bootloader...it actually seem illegal to not give one full ownership of their device.

Who is staying and who is leaving?

So with the Nexus 4 around the corner, I'm sure a lot of us are wondering if we should keep messing with this phone. The Nexus 4 is 300 bucks for the 8gb version, so you could sell this phone and get 150-200, and cover the rest. It is completely unlocked and has higher specs all around than this phone (besides no LTE which may stop me from buying it). So I was wondering how much of this community will stay with the AHD. It's a great device, especially with the new battery, but is it worth not be able to flash as many roms as possible to it? Let me know your opinions and help me make up my mind! If I do decide to get it I will have a AHD with the battey mod, otterbox, TPU case, hdmi, and Zagg screen protector for sale lol. But seriously anyone open to speak their minds? I don't know what to do!

Given the lack of a working recovery at this point. I'm giving serious consideration to picking up a N4 as my primary, and keeping my AHD as a backup.
If you read the reviews on the N4, in spite of the newer hardware, it still gets spanked by the One X, and the S3. HERE on Anandtech.
Knowing that my phone spanks both the OneX as well as the S3 like a red headed step child, it's going to be tough moving to a somewhat slower phone, but having a working recovery to backup, and flash my ROMs as updates occur is much more important to me

Ah, do you see any chance of us getting the bootloader unlocked? It looked like Matt was making good progress, I'm guessing that is when he bricked his phone, although I dont know for sure. Or do you think this phone will end up getting left behind completely. I really like this phone, but I am tired of moto already. Seriously, coming out with a dev version 4 months after the retail???? With NO word it will ever come out. That is absolute bs. At least let us trade in out retail version for the dev version (obviously with a small upgrade fee, maybe 50-100 bucks). I would be fine with that and it would be do able for them.

I don't know wtf Moto is up to lately?!?
I was reading that there's a "brick wall" between Google and Moto, meaning that Google bought them for their patents, and they refuse to show any bias towards them in fear of pissing off other phone manufacturers.
I sure wish Google would rethink this strategy, and start building phones that really blow anything else out of the water.
They have the OS, and they now own a company that has the "potential" to build the best phones out, yet they keep frigging things up.
I know I'll never purchase another Moto phone until/unless they start rethinking their strategy, and at the very least stop encrypting the signatures for the bootloaders.
Just my .02c

From reviews, it suppose to be pretty high quality. Also is suppose to feel nice in the hand. With that said, still a good point and something to look for.
LG's build quailty is under-rated. Same as with any hobby or whatever you call this phone obsession. People look at price and give it a bad name. I think LG started turning the corner with the Nitro. It was a solid phone. Nothing compares to Moto though with build quality. But I think LG beats Samsung and HTC.

I'll definitely be sticking with the Atrix HD. I was a flashaholic on my Atrix 4G so I was disappointed that this phone has a locked down bootloader. On the other hand, I've had absolutely no complaints about this phone especially where battery life is concerned with the EB40. Having all the power that this phone has to offer with excellent battery life is just what I needed. This phone has completely replaced my computers altogether. As for the bootloader, Hashcode has already done tremendous work on getting safestrap working for our devices. Why worry about a locked bootloader when we can get around it with safestrap? Isn't the point of an unlocked bootloader to get a custom recovery for flashing and isn't that what safestrap hopes to do without the need for unlocking the bootloader? I won't be giving this phone up anytime soon and I look forward to getting a Paranoid Android build going for it.

Is it just me or is this phone a devepors dud?

So I understand that we have locked bootloader but it seems that these forums are dying. This is the first LG phone ive ever owned but it really feels dead even compared to my Galaxy note 3. It's like nobody is even trying to do anything with it and its made me quite sad. Anyone have any suggestions as to how to make this phone feel fun and different like I remember doing to my Galaxy s2 or s3? I miss the good old days when a new rom came out every week and new exploits came out almost instantly.
Since there is no official unlock method, it's very tough to develop. Even if there was a workaround to unlock, these money hungry CDMA carriers lock us out of fastboot and adb, so it wouldn't be possible either way. I really wish I would've waited for the new Nexus phones or the OnePlus Two.

I just think the general idea of bootloader locking is bull**** and should be illegal. I would love a nexus phone but I will not buy into googles push to cloud storage and their services. I can deal with no removable battery but non expandable memory is a no go. Honestly if/when we get android M on the G3 and we get a custom rom I will go back to it provided the bluetooth issues are ironed out. But thats just my 2 cents

Bootloader unlock, illegal... Really? Please don't be that guy. We bought the phone, we should be able to do what we want to it. That's like buying a car and it being illegal to change your own oil.
You might want to read that again. Where did I state that UN locking it should be illegal. I said the whole boot loader locking thing is bs ie we should not be locked out from it.
I called LG and talk to a tech who told me if I send my phone to them they would unlock my bootloader but it would void my warranty and of course I already knew that but I was just shocked that they said yes instead of telling me no.
