Just a warning to everybody: Use your Nexus 7 some sort of protection at all times!
I have a Motorola Xoom and a Galaxy Nexus since they were released and never had a single scratch on both.
Now I own a Nexus 7 for less than a month and it has cracked the screen dropping from the height of one open hand...
I have no idea what to do with a cracked screen Nexus 7... it am using it with a mouse with usb OTG support, but that's far from desirable :/
The worst part is that I live in Brazil and will have to figure out what to do about it away from the stores... :/
(Any idea is welcome, btw)
TL;DL:
Take GREAT care of your Nexus7 or it will crack the screen!

According to this article, even Gorilla Glass screens will crack easily if they fall on the right spot, regardless of the device: https://www.xda-developers.com/xda-tv-2/truth-about-gorilla-glass-drops-tests-composition-xda-developer-tv/. Dropping any handheld device is never a good idea, but especially heavier devices like tablets and laptops.
It's only the glass on the front that's cracked and not the LCD screen itself, right? You should be able to replace the glass without too much effort, I've seen replacement glass panels for a lot of other devices, the Nexus 7 is so new I don't think replacement parts for it are easy to find yet, though.
I assume the touchscreen no longer works since you say you're using a mouse, so most likely the touchscreen module is cracked as well. You can replace those as well but may have to wait a while for replacement parts to become available on eBay and such.
It should not cost you a lot in replacement parts but it may be tricky to replace. Certainly better than paying for professional repair though.
Same here mine fell 2feet onto a carpeted floor and it was in a sturdy leather case. Now I have 2 cracks running from opposite corners so having to use a mouse. Lucky it's insured through my bank so it should be no problem getting it fixed or replaced.

I just read an article that said the N7 does not use Gorilla Glass. Hopefully this is not the cause of the seemingly easy to break screen.

That's really unfortunate, I dropped mine from about 4 feet onto tile floor without a scratch. You can bet my heart skipped a beat though.
Unfortunately the N7 doesn't have gorilla glass I'll be holding mine extra tight :/ That really stinks, sorry

I read somewhere the display is thinner and lighter because of touch and display have no air beetween..
Do maybe some screens have tension because of the new way of production ?

You have to replace the whole display because the glass front is fused to the display. That makes it thinner but more expensive to replace.

I WANT that pro tech tool kit!!!!!!
I ended up with a Nexus7 because my Transformer TF300 tablet LCD cracked. Sold it on eBay and bought the Nexus. I didn't drop it or anything... just started happening.
Good luck everyone! lol
Now that makes sense, especially since Google never specifically mentions the word "Gorilla" anywhere in the specs - just "Scratch-resistant Corning glass" - so it's not Gorilla glass... Shouldn't come as a major surprise though, they had to keep costs down in order to sell these things for only $200!

The way glass on tablets and smart phones work is like this:
Harder glass is more scratch resistant but cracks more easily,
Softer glass scratches very easily but is more resistant to shock and impact.
Supposedly Gorilla Glass 3 is supposed to be very hard but also flexible in order to absorb shock.

Did you check the left side of your display for separation? That's a common flaw which could explain why your glass cracked from such a minor impact.
To see if the left side of your screen was lifting, hold the device with the right side facing you. Look across the display and use the left bezel as a silver horizon line. If the black display is higher at any point, you'll be able to see it interrupt that silver line.
Here is an example of a perfectly flush display, looking across the device from the right side.

The screen doesn't crack easily. Op you just got unlucky with yours. No nexus device have gorilla glass, but that's just a trademark branding. The glass on the nexus is chemically tempered and is similiar to gorilla glass. It can still fail from a short drop if it hits in the right spot, this is at the edge where all glass is weakest. Notice how in those impact demos on YouTube they never hit near the edge always at the center. Just search broke gorilla glass on xda and you will see lots of threads about people breaking their screen with a one or two feet drop and its always on a corner or edge.
the bigger the glass the easier to crack no?

You're not alone...
The same happened to me. I dropped it from about 20cm and the screen cracked quite badly. I was thinking of sending it to ASUS for repair, but it seems the repair cost is quite high (they charge 60 euros only to have a look at it). Some people on the web say that ASUS wants about 160 dollars for a full repair, since the screen and digitizer are "glued" together. I looked everywhere for a replacement screen, but I couldn't find one. This is still a new device. Anyway, after a frustrating time I decided to sell my Nexus on ebay:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120976824...LX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649#ht_500wt_1288
I just don't know what to do next:
1. Get another one and keep it in a cushioned safe with anti-gravity technology?
2. Wait for the Nexus 10?
3. ipad mini?
4. Forget about it and get a life?

Apple products do tend to get cracked sreens really easy too though
It's a general consensus at this point, where if it has a glass screen, Gorilla, Corning, or other, take care of it. It is glass after all, not shatter-proof polycarbonate.
For drop prone people the Gumdrop cases can't come soon enough lol. I've only dropped a tablet once *knock on wood*, my TF101 from a few feet onto carpet.
Mine cracked spectacularly from normal use. Holding in left hand, thumb the glass from left bezel and boom, cracked just from thumb pressure. I can't explain other than my N7 has screen lift issue where I hold it. In fact, the crack fractured in a semi circle from where my thumb would be holding it. I'm currently arguing with ASUS repair support on whether this crack is under warranty from manufacturing defect, the screen lift, or charged repair for customer damage which imo it shouldn't be.

Hello. I bought a galaxy note on 28th november. After only 2 weeks of absolutely normal and careful use, my screen is scratched and broken. Ok, it is a small crack, but it is not good.
It never fell and it never hit anything. After only 2 days, i noticed some scratchs and some other came in the days after. Then, the part of the screen between the upper edge and the speaker broke in two, with a crack (small, 5mm but still a crack) going from the edge to the speaker. I can't post a photo as i sent it back to samsung for repairs (it had also display issues). Do you know a reason for it? It should be gorilla glass, and i only kept it in my pockets without anything inside apart the smartphone. Do you think samsung will repair it since it happened during normal use after ONLY 2 weeks? I'm really annoyed and disappointed.
Anyone experiencing glass resistance issues?
Thanks
Call samsung and send it in they will fix it..

Yes, i did it and i'm waiting, and i also adressed the lines issue and the green/banded screen, but i am in italy and i'm not sure if it is covered by warranty, it should: they can say i broke it.
The Corning Gorilla Glass was one reason I went with the SGS2.
The other reason was fear of provoking the wrath of God for having such a sensationally beautiful device (the Note). It's an awesome device, really.
But God smote those who worshiped a golden calf, too.
lol Sorry, I'm not really a religious fanatic. But yeah, sucks about your screen. Hope Sammy fixes that one up for you.
Welcome Nickelsilver and please don't take this personally and in NO way I'm defending Samsung or the Note but I have to say the neither scratches or dents/cracks come by their own.
They just don't happen/appear magically by themselves on the phone's screen/body. Maybe someone is messing with you Note without you knowing it?
E.g: I have 1mm small and barely noticeable scratch on the top left corner which I suspect it came from the ONLY 1 time my Note slipped from the passenger's seat and fell in the gap between the passenger's door/seat.
I went through 3 screens on my dell streak. Now that I have the note which is even bigger I was so cautious I treated it like a delicate fragile little flower. Needless to say after 2 weeks I noticed what appeared to be a scratch going up from the bottom middle halfway up. Turns out this is not a magical scratch that sprang out of nowhere but an actual crack on the outer glass screen. I have never dropped it but perhaps it was somehow flexed.
No warranty of course. I have ordered the glass itself from overseas and when it gets here in a month I suppose I will try replacing that piece individually as its only the outer glass that seems cracked. Hopefully they do not glue the screens together like they did in the streak ><

Plus.. He forgot that he has also once posted a question regarding to his screen problem too here on the forum.
Gorilla glass is bull****. I had dell 5 streak, and I changed the screen more than 5 times. Little drop will result in screen loss. Do not depend on gorilla glass.
My Samsung Galaxy Note are broke
Yesterday I was knocked out of the hands under my 40 days old Samsung Galaxy Note, the cover glass is cracked along its entire length as a spider's web, while the LCD screen is not damaged, that still works, receiving the touch command. The solution I found in the orders of the new protective glass over eBay. Maybe that was too much angry because it happened to me, but NOTE is too amazing, and I somehow survive.. I'll let it be when we come new safety glass
I do not think this is a witch hunt. More of an informative thread on one weakness to an otherwise amazing device. It may be that until an indestructive clear glass is created that we will continually face this on any large phone. Anything this large will flex easily and likely crack. One thing Samsung definately did right was not glue the glass to the LCD behind it. I put a clear screen cover over mine and you cant even see the crack anymore. Were this a dell streak you would have half of your screen blacked out.
This is definitely the best mobile device out there in my opinion, people should just be extremely cautious with where they carry it. Mine most likely cracked in my pocket from slight flexing.
The glass on the note shouldn't break even when flexed unless it's not Gorilla glass.
Gorilla glass is not only scratch resistant,it is also shatter resistant.
If the glass is breaking frequently on the notes, then I wonder if they really have Gorilla glass.

That demonstration glass at the beginning of the video is about 3 times thicker than what Samsung uses on the Note/Galaxy S2/Galaxy S SAMOLED panels. And it's quite a bit smaller, height/width wise (it's about iPhone 4 sized).
Thickness makes a significant difference in flexibility and shatter resistance. Which is off on a tangent, because the main reason Samsung and others uses GG and similar techniques is not for shatter resistance.
It's almost entirely for the combination of higher scratch resistance vs metals (all bets are off with sand particles) and a better tactile feel (it's smoother) than non-treated glass.
Sure it may not be as thick on the note but you are never going to flex the phone anywhere as much as that demonstration.
My point is that if it is gorilla glass,it shouldn't be that easy to crack the screen given the abuse that it is supposed to be able to take.
All these? Gorilla Glass
And all these? Gorilla Glass
How about all these? Gorilla Glass
Or maybe all these? Gorilla Glass
It's been 10 days since i bought "the Note". I dropped the device just once from 1 meter height. It was a free fall with not much impact power. The screen has a crack on the upper right corner. I know every product is meant to last but so easy , so fast ! ??? Thankfully it still works with no functional issues. It's just the protective glass on top of the actual LCD that is broken. But u can still feel it while wiping your finger and it is appearent...
Hardware wise The Note is simply outragous but when it comes to software and durability it can't even come closer to what i used to find on HTC devices

The weight of the note will count against it during falls compared to say a very light phone like the SG2.Impact is going to be much harder if they both fell from the same height especially given te size of the notes screen.
Until they can make the note lighter, users will just have to be more careful not to drop it.Gorilla glass is not unbreakable.
I get my note tomorrow. Now I'm all paranoid
I saw some post on some Android blog saying someones nexus 4 cracked because of temperature change. That was ridiculous for me, cuz many other phones have gorilla glass 2 on their displays which gets hot and nothing happens. What can be different in glass between front and back of the device?
Also this guy said it cracked while charging:
Hating or true?
Tell me what you think please.
People drop them and then use this as a handy excuse to try and get a new phone.
Same point of view as me
yeah i dont think so, sounds like a scam. it would take some serious heat to crack the glass.
Phaha, idiot dropped it look at the cracking... cant believe some people would be cheeky to claim it was the phones fault they dropped it, **** happens but dont try and run it down like this... Glad this Nexus is doing well, so well that people have to BS issues haha! Only the speaker really is a fault but whether its software or hardware is yet to be know .
Still waiting to be able to order mine .
How much would it need to warm up? Like 110*C? Strange as hell.
If it was temperature change it would have to be from Quadrant to snow in Ojmiakon, right?

An extreme enough temperature change could do that, but there would likely have to be a pre-exisiting defect of some sort. Doesn't take much, a small pit, or the glass back not being aligned properly around the camera lens. That said, I've only ever experienced that with a car windshield or two, not my N4.

I hear people in this forum and many blog sites say it is. But didn't Phil from androidcentral confirm from LG that it is not gorilla glass. He went to where this and the optimus G were made and LG said that it is not gorilla glass on the back, its not glass.
That's interesting. But even if it's not gg it shouldn't break because of heat, right?
Wysyłane z mojego GT-I9100 za pomocą Tapatalk 2
Not if its not real or close to real glass, if its not as good as dispersing heat away from the which I assume is the battery overheating from recharge. Then yes it could possibly crack. However I charge using the included cable and never felt the screen get hot. I think it cracking from heat is real possibility depending what the composition on the back really is.
I keep hearing BS complaints about this phone. I have had 0 problems, no yellow tint, glass doesn't crack or scratch, no software or signal issues. I seriously think people just make **** up in their head or they don't actually own a N4 that are saying these things. I was one of the first to get this phone and its the best phone in quality and performance that I have used. I've had a int. I think if the phone got hot enough to break the glass it would not have survived it. The most components will take serious damage from the heat also, not only the glass.
It MIGHT be that a rapid temperature change from hot to cold or vice versa could cause the glass to crack. To crack, not to shatter like the one in die video.

Yes, because site admins are always right about everything all the time. This whole heat shock stuff is nonsense. The phone doesn't get that hot, and room-temperature isn't that cold. At worst, Kellex had a defective phone. The glass either had a manufacturing problem or it was seated improperly. More likely, he broke it, since he also broke an Optimus G, which has been out longer than the Nexus 4 and hasn't had a big issue with this.
Look at THIS THREAD, if the glass has enough flex to creak, then it's got enough flex to handle any heat stress that doesn't involve you sticking your phone in boiling water after keeping the phone in your fridge.
As for some LG guy claiming the back isn't glass, I'm skeptical of that too. It might not be a proprietary Corning formula, but it's not plastic either, which means it's almost certainly SOME kind of glass.
I took a look at some photos on ifixit and think it might be a round of bad batteries. They have a fault and expand when they are rapid charged and is pushing against the glass causing it to crack. It be cool if one of those guys could open the phone and check the battery.

Just theorizing and repeating myself here, but there would have to be an internal defect in the glass, a microscopic chip, or the glass would have to be fitted poorly around the camera lens. The cut out for the lens is rounded, but it's still a weak spot so far as glass is concerned. Would likely need the perfect storm of events to make it happen.

Good theory.. Scares me a bit..
If they truly did cracks o easily I'm sure they are doing what they can to get Google to replace them..But if they refuse I guess opening it up to show the battery will be a good way to get momentum on the internet in case it really is happening.
But for all we know they dropped the phones and are just trying to get replacements.

There was another post where someone showed a cracked back on both the LG and the Nexus, they said it was where they were placing the phone onto a cold stone work surface causing a temperature difference. Although if the surface isn't smooth and they drop it with some force and a small raised area of stone meets the glass it would crack it and explain it.
If the phone got as hot as they claimed in that video the safety fuse in the battery should have cut it dead to avoid an explosion, but the phone appears to be working just fine.
The backs are breaking that much we know, then again so do the fronts break on all phones if treated badly. Glass can crack and break, what is hard to ever know from posts here is if the breakage is just in line with other devices and typical, or it is happening statistically more often on the Nexus 4. Of course people will complain of broken phones/glass, but no one is going to post here and complain the glass hasn't become cracked!
Regards
Phil
I just took the case off my Galaxy S2 and peeled back the Invisible Shield after 2 years and it looks pretty good. I spent 30 bucks on this rather horrible case which I will probably replace with a 10 dollar Spigen Hybrid which almost as bad atleast would protect the bottom front.

I have never minded the original invisible shield. But I have to admit I never felt the GS2 screen before and the Nexus 5 feels great. I still can't go 3 years with no protection. Here is how horrible the screen protector looked after pulling it off mind you the color is skewed I forgot to fix in editing:
My 5 day later unboxing photo:
The only thing I have to say about going naked or not is how long do you plan on having the phone and do you work in an environment that will scratch or smash the phone on the first day? Ive had dozens of drops and I use the phone in an environment that would cause me to rub sand like substances across the screen. Until I get a protector I take my gloves off everytime I use the phone and it slows me down.
Actually, I've been rocking all my phones naked until my last phone (S3). I was surprised that the lower right corner of the phone and the bottom part of the camera had scratches till I put a screen protector at the back. Prolly avail of the Spigen glass screen protector and might get a casing to partner it up with.
I used my Samsung Galaxy S3 for a year and a half naked. The screen didn't have a single scratch, but the plastic back plate looked like one giant scratch. I never once dropped the phone though so no physical damage. If I treat my Nexus 5 like I treated the S3 I think I will definitely be fine.

Sadly I can't guarantee myself that I won't drop it. I am as careful with most of my equipment as I can be however things happen. I once kicked a 1,000 dollar camera body off a table lol. I don't consider myself accident prone and I don't drink... but occasionally things happen. Im lucky in that things usually don't break.
My s3 took a couple of knocks around the bezel. I only got cases to hide them and the awful crack by the usb port.
I've just put the black titanium dbrand skin on back and sides and I feel confident that the same knocks wont cause damage

The Galaxy S2 had the most resilient screen of all the phones I have used till date...I used it without any protectors for 2 years before exchanging it for my N5...barely had a couple of scratches on the screen, the lower glossy part however got badly scratched from a hard tpu case I had used for a few months...used it naked ever since I took off the case..
I am actually a little worried about the the Ringke Slim case that I am currently using on my N5, I fear I will find the bumpers scratched when I finally take this case off...uninstallation is a bit of a hassle with this case..
I think my gs2 was the most resilient phone I've had. Buried it on a pebble beach, skimmed it down tarmac roads, chucked it across rooms, and never put any protection of any sort on it. And I spent the last year of owning it using it on a building site. I wouldn't recommend doing any of these activities for the record. My n5 has been in a gel case since day one though, my friend had an n4 and a 2 inch drop was enough to break the screen, so I'm not taking any risks. Plus the s2 had free insurance, which may have swayed my behaviour.

I am pretty careful with my stuff but I drop each phone at least a couple of times....I have had s few dent but no screen smashes. I would rather go screen protector only but a case gives a bit more piece of mind...although I do sometimes risk it anyway and go bare back [insert your own joke here].

I had the GS2 on Sprint too! That was a great phone. Got it on release and lasted me until just 6 months ago when I changed carriers. Now I'll be going Nexus 5. We have a very similar upgrade path.
My GS2 is no where near as clean though. I used it naked and dropped it plenty of times. Once I spilled a whole mug of coffee right next to it. Had to pry it open and clean up the residue with isopropyl alcohol.
But no matter what that phone kept trucking. It was a great daily driver.
I'm coming from a release day sprint s2 as well lol. That phone was such a monster for its time that I didn't even feel the need to upgrade. I took that phone through hell and it took a beating. I even took it with me through the Sahara. I love that phone and I still have it. I got 2 black ones replaced due to the Phantom keypresses and the power button failure but the white one I fixed the power button myself.

This thread brings back memories. I LOVED my Epic 4G Touch, it is easily one of my all time favorite phones. I wish I still had it.
I'm currently still using the Sprint GS2 currently, and I just had it replaced for a cracked screen. I got CM11 back up and running on it and then I realized it has the phantom capacitive button pressing problem when it's on 3G. It's so frustrating because I'll have to flash it back to stock, triangle-away the bootloader counter, bring it in to Sprint and have them get me another replacement because as per Asurion insurance, Sprint is where I'm supposed to bring it if it has problems not related to physical damage.
I've already bought a wireless charger with intentions of buying a Nexus 5 on a non-contract plan, I just haven't pulled the trigger. To those of you having upgraded from the Epic 4G Touch to the Nexus 5, was that upgrade a monster one?

Yeah I was blown away by everything. Only thing is that the speaker is lower and gets covered easily.

Yes. While I was plenty happy to stay on my E4GT with the renewed CM efforts I was not happy to stay on sprint. Benchmark wise this thing blows away the E4GT in 3dmark suggesting the gaming performance for one is out of this world in comparison. In general use I don't know.
The screen has excellent viewing angles making me not at all regret switching from an AMOLED phone. Despite an LCD the battery life is phenomenal. I could hardly get 3 hours of screen on with the E4GT. I get 3 hours of screen on and 16 hours total easily with many people getting upwards of 6 hours screen on if you don't mind total run times falling a bit. Its only slightly bigger and with the general idea of DPI scaling the apps don't really show any more than they did on the E4GT sometimes you might not notice any issues having stayed behind on the older device.

After owning the phone for literally 7 days, my girlfriend managed to shatter the screen on her N5. She says it fell off a counter and landed face down. The glass is so bad you can feel it, and when you run your fingers across the screen you actually get little bits of glass powder on your fingers.
Surprisingly, the LCD is perfectly fine.
And here's how bad it is...

There is no phone that can withstand a drop from a counter top and land on its face. This is nothing new.

not this again....
Gorilla glass is scratch resistant. NOT Impact/Shatter resistant. It never has been.
Phones break. It's not the glasses fault.
I know it'll break. But I just have never seen GG shatter like that. It was crazy to me. I'm not complaining, or raising a stink. I just didn't know it was possible. All of the test videos I've seen it seemed to withstand harsher conditions. But oh well.

But Gorilla Glass isn't even shatter resistant. The title of the thread is complaining about Gorilla Glass 3, but it has nothing to do with Gorilla Glass.

Lol, I think I watched them run over a phone with GG3 with a car and the glass didn't break at all. But everything else inside did, lol

You must surprise when that car has concrete like tires and the phone doesn't break.
You can throw a Basket Ball on top of a phone and nothing could happen, but the story may vary if you do it with a lighter but much harder Golf ball
Getting run over is a lot of pressure, but also low impact. I'm sure they went real slow over it right? Not like driving by at 40mph+ ?
Different story when it's dropped. It's higher impact. Your phone is actually falling into something and coming to an abrupt stop from however fast it was going.
Driving over it won't do it any justice because think of how wide a tire is. As it passes over the phone, most of the pressure is going to be more or less evenly distributed over the face of the glass. Also, tires are made of rubber. Soft material. Not to mention the suspension will give a little when the tire goes over the phone.
It's two different ballparks man, apples to oranges.
Watch any actual "drop" test. The glass won't survive a drop. As mentioned earlier by others GG3 is scratch resistant. Not shatter proof.
Gotcha.

Terribly sorry for your loss. My hats off to the fallen N5.
May I recommend these in the future?

Best glass screen protector I've found for this phone. Pretty cheap, too. Only bad part is they ship from China. So you will probably forgot you ordered it by the time you get it.
I've personally applied 3 to 3 different N5. My old one, my new one and a friends. Application is pretty easy if you know how to put one on.
Comes with everything you need plus instructions too. I haven't seen one air bubble or had any part of mine lift off the screen ever.
I swear women break their phones like it's no big deal. I stopped buying my girlfriends phones years ago after having to buy 2 different Blackberrys. My current gf has shattered her iPhone 5 twice this year and had to go get it's screen swapped. I baby all my stuff whether it's my car or my phone lol.

Dude. Glass is GLASS why do people not understand that there will NEVER be an unbreakable phone! Stop! Its stupid. Sorry about the phone but seriously... Where did ANYONE say that the glass would be unbreakable??? The GLASS fell FACE DOWN on (I'm going to assume) TILE!

*Cough* Sorry to sound kinda mean, but its a phone made of glass. Glass is not shatter proof, it is very brittle. T

Gorrila Glass is crazy strong compared to Soda-lime glass. It can do some amazing things which can be seen in very specific tests on the internet. This gives people a sense that the glass is more or less indestructible. In many cases it will not be.

Exactly what I meant. Plus if the tires are not overfilled (set to the recommended pressure on the tag in the driver door) then the tires have a little give to them as well.
That can't really be used as an accurate test of how your phones glass will hold up. As I said earlier he went really slow at first. Even on the last one he was only doing about 10-20mph. In the beginning he even had a towel under it.
I hate when people make those videos because it doesn't accurately depict how the phone will react under stress. I mean how many people are going to accidentally run over their phones? Even if you do, you probably would have had to DROP it somewhere, first. Go by DROP tests. Those "drive" tests are completely useless.
Yeah, I understand.

I wanna know experience of those who used their Nexus 7 without screen guard for 1 month or longer.
Please mention the kind of usage, like gaming or simple browsing, please also mention if you used it with a case or without one.
I have currently removed the screen guard, the screen now looks really alive but I'm worried that it might result in scratches,I use it mostly for browsing and sometimes gaming.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
I never used a screen protector and I have my N7 for 2 years, there's not even one scratch on it.
However, if I travel somewhere I put a case on it which also protects the screen, but if it's not in a backpack then it's always naked.
I use it for browsing, but why would it matter?

I just thought that as gaming involves more rubbing of screen unlike browsing so it might cause some scratches.
Anyways thanks for the reply, I do have this poetic slim line case which is magnetic and would be useful while travelling.

Do you use something to clean the screen like some solution,if yes then how often?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
Even if gaming means more rubbing of the screen (which I don't think is the case, but I barely play anything on touchscreens), there's no way you're going to scratch the screen with your fingers only.
If you have a case, use it when you're travelling, because if you just put you're Nexus 7 in a bag full of other stuff without any protection, then there's a big chance that it'll actually scratch, otherwise you can use it with or without a case/screen protector.
I have used 13 months without 1.its still good.i carry it with me to my college evryday in an case.it was droppd two or three times from about 4ft.i am heavey user used it for gaming n reading mostly.only problem without screenguard is annoying figerprints

back when I had my n7, after about 6 months of not using a screen protector and dropping it multiple times, once even off my porch face down into gravel, it only had one very light barely noticeable scratch.
BUT, I also used Swype keyboard. and I noticed something odd after some time. where I swiped in the keyboard area a lot(used it for forums browsing a lot of typing/swiping) it seemed that the "coating" on the screen in that area had worn off. I'm guessing it was some kinda oleophobic(sp??) coating for greasy fingerprints. that area definite looked different than rest of screen. it would get smudges from my finger s there WAY easier than any other area, and if I "steamed" the screen with my breath to get a better wipe clean, you could see that area stood out as different vs rest of the screen.
that's just my experience, others may vary, especially Dependent on how much you use a swipe style keyboard lol

This is what I use to clean the screen.
i had my nexus 7 for 1 year and a few months and i never used a screen guard or a case.
no scratches
i play games alot and browse alot.
i dropped it two times
I've had mine nearly 2 years and not a single scratch despite being naked. I do use a hard case when travelling though :good:
A guy I work with had a naked one in his coat pocket, fell over a tree root in a dark churchyard (I didn't like to ask too much why) and smashed the screen to smithereens!
I have mine for about 1 1/2 years now and I never used a screen protector and a case only for a short time. Sadly I dropped it once on the asphalt which it got some scratches on the hull from. But the screen is still in an absolute flawless condition. But the fact that I have my N7 at home for 95% of the time might also saved it from some scratches.
Mine is almost 99 present time at home, now have been using it without screen guard for 3 days and I have to say that the experience is a lot lot better, the touch is a very nice without screen guard and screen looks a lot more lively, I think I'm gonna keep it like this.
The protection is not worth compromising the experience and as I can see from what you guys say, it's not necessary either.

Screen guards drive me crazy, between the loss of touch sensitivity and the potential air bubbles. Stopped using them years ago, over multiple devices, and have yet to regret not using them anymore. Modern electronics are pretty sturdy
Its like with any glass surface. If you keep abrasive substances away from it then you don't have to worry about scratches. Keep your hands clean and you won't have to worry about scratches. Most scratches on phone screens come from being placed in pants pockets. Why my phone has a protector on it. I do have a protector on my n7 mostly because my son uses my tablet from time to time. My wife has a 2013 n7 and is naked and so far no scratches and that screen is so slick feeling. Almost like your finger is having sex lol. Maybe one day I will take my screen protector off as my son has a tab 2. I just started leaving my case off my n7 as it just stays home mostly.

Bought when they announced it at the 2012 IO. Never had a screen guard. Always in a cover-case...just a cheapo poetic. Screen is perfect.
I clean all of my device screens the same way: a few drops of water and a terry cloth or microfiber cloth. The 2012 N7 has a solid front glass so there is no chance of getting the insides wet. I have to be more careful with my S4 and 5s since they have hard home buttons and speaker holes.
(And yes, I have an iPhone for work. My options were an S4 which I already had, an ancient D4 or the 5s. So I got the 5s to have something different.)
I tend to not care. I'd rather enjoy my device than have it all wrapped up in plastic.
