so thats mean if ics come tomorrow .... it will be from bell
I'm dying as well. Been hunting down an 8.9 as it's an optimal size for gaming (for nearly 2 months). I finally found one bnib for $300 only to find out it's on 3.2 and that' only gets me the old version of my game (that I'm addicted to). I'm literally dying here.
The 10.1 played the game awesomely (does the 10.1 have ics? I thought it did, but it was too big, hence I downgraded.
Anyway., it's supposedly a carrier free 8.9, but I see Bell PVR and crap like that in the apps.
Is there any way to get ICS on this tablet currently or not? I've never rooted or delved into that stuff so if there is a way, I may take a chance and gettur done.
I'm dying here. I'm literally twice a day checking if there's an update. I can't believe there are people who've had the update since July or earlier.

There's no carrier free canadian gtab 8.9 LTE, you maybe just got an unlocked device from the seller. I also have the Bell version 8.9 LTE since release date which I unlocked & now using it with Rogers much more reliable LTE and its always been in the same 3.2 HoneyComb firmware. Currently there is no ICS update for it yet, but I am also patiently waiting for it because I saw great renewed life on my Galaxy Tab 7.7 on ICS and my 11month old daughter's Rogers Gtab 10.1 is running awesome with its recently released Rogers ICS update.
Im pretty sure the ICS Update is coming really soon and it will come when you lease expect it.
I feel ICS will also make this device more awesome.

That's reassuring to know....but still impatient for the release.
Since you disclosed all that info-I have a question for you. Processor-wise, shouldn't both the 8.9 and 10.1 operate similarly? There's a multi-player game I'm addicted to that played great on the 10.1 with ICS (a later version of the game-which I'm thinking is possibly the cause). When I play on the 8.9 this past week I have two issues.
1-controls glitch infrequently (eventhough multi-touch tests don't show any issues)
2-the game is shockingly slow and laggy.
I'm playing on the same network (wifi), no other differences, just device is different, and the game version is different. I'm praying that with ICS the tab will function much better (same as the 10.1), and the compatible more recent version of the game will equally play better.

Processor & CPU Clock wise, on paper Gtab 8.9 LTE is better than the Gtab 10.1
P7500 Gtab 10.1 - only have 1ghz Nvidia Tegra 2 T20
While
i957m Gtab 8.9 LTE - have 1.5ghz Nvidia Tegra 2 T25
Comparing my i957m to my p7500 when both of them we're still 3.2HC - the i957 was more faster & stable.
Now that the p7500 got the ICS update, difference in speed and stability to my i957m is night & day. i957m doesn't even come close to the p7500.
So hopefully when we finally get the official ICS update to our i957m it will maximize its speed and stability to the fullest to solve your problem to that game you're playing.

So I heard rumors that Samsung is not continuing production of the Captivate and will be phasing it out. Is it true??????? This would mean no Gingerbread for us. Anyone have any more info on this?
We most likely will not get Gingerbread anyway. Samsung only committed to one major release (that being froyo). There are leaks of it available on the i9000 but I would be very surprised if those ever shake down the tree to the Captivate. Especially with the Galaxy S 2 coming out in the coming weeks.
I'm a bit more optimistic about it. Perhaps we won't get an official 2.3 for the Captivate (from what I remember, Samsung doesn't build a firmware for a carrier branded device until the carrier asks for it, so you would have ATT to blame for that one), but I'm confident that the i9000 will get an official "Gingerbread". If they release an official 2.3 or 2.4 for the i9000, the source will follow soon after, and we can build a Captivate version from that.
if a cell phone is in your hand, it has been phased out already, in some regard.

Exactly. We will certainly get Gingerbread eventually, because the i9000 will get it. And what the i9000 gets, we get.
Also, while not entirely stable, CM7 is working on the Captivate, and that's gingerbread.
i doubt it going to be phased out that quick. Keep note, the phone is still less than a year old and a powerhouse in terms of performance.
Tegra 2 GPU performance is still just about on par with the GPU in the Galaxy S phones. Only thing is that it has dual-core for faster regular computing.
There are already leaked builds of the Galaxy S gingerbread.
And yes, CM7 has a fairly stable build of gingerbread AOSP for the Captivate. Im running it currently and its pretty darn good. Keep in mind its AOSP and built from the group up pretty much by the ppl over at Cyanogen and doesn't have a single trace of Touchwiz which is awesome.

Nice. Rig.
Well it makes sense... Why would they keep making new Captivates/Vibrants/Fascinates/Epic 4Gs/Nexus S' when they're just about to release their Galaxy S 2 phones which are MUCH better? They have tons of stock already out there, so I bet they've already stopped production on these phones awhile ago.
Also, they mentioned about a week ago or so that all Galaxy S phones will be getting Gingerbread... The update problem wasn't because of Samsung, it was the carriers holding them back, everyone else in the world got their Froyo update months ago, the US was the last to get it.
About the upcoming galaxy s 2, is it going to be available for at&t or are we on att gonna get stuck with the infuse which only has a single core processor.

I recall reading somewhere that Samsung is planning on doing the same with the Galaxy S 2 as they did with the current Galaxy S phones, have them on all carriers with slight hardware differences and different names. So if that's the case, you'll have a version of the Galaxy S 2 available on AT&T... Trying to dig up the article where I read that, will update this post when I do.
That's makes sense that they'll do that. But on samsungs website it shows that the infuse is coming to att which I believe only has a single core processor the hummingbird. So that will be a little bit of a bummer.

Tmo stopped selling the Vibrant as soon as the 4g came out, so I bet the cappy will be done for when the infuse is out.
Since it took almost 9 mos to get the Froyo update - I would suspect we will never see a Gingerbread update for our phones.

Hello guys...
I'm new to this forum and new to Galaxy Tab. 8.9 and new to Android system.
The tab is at home and I didn’t even unpack it.
I'm kind of a person that likes to explore and change setting and stuff.
The first thing in my mind now is to boot the tab and update Android version, as I think it comes with 3.0 version and I guess there was an update came on after that.
But from your experience as 8.9 owners and once you were new to it.
What things should I do to it? update what? Disable what? Charging maybe? Tweak sensitivity? [if there is a feature like that!].
What not to change? not to delete? not to disable?
Any tip will be appreciated and it will definitely be new to me as a person never had an Android device and leaving iphone soon for a Samsung device

It is Samsung Galaxy tab 8.9, Wi-Fi.
Where to start...
An OTA (Over the Air) update is a good start as 3.2 is the latest and 4.0 Ice cream sandwich is on the way.
Out of the box, the Galaxy tab is very good without customization. I'd spend my time getting used to the interface and putting my main info on Widgets and syncing everything. There is so much to customize. You will soon learn what you like and what annoys. From there, you can look at some of the things you don't like and tweak. I would leave rooting till a little later just till you get used to things and ics is coming soon. Good idea to see stock issues first but Xda is a great source of info if you want to go down that path.
Sent from my GT-P7300 using Tapatalk
1) root it (see the XDA forum, it's all perfectly explained there)
2) install cwm
3) backup stock rom
4) install Overcome, or one of the two ICS roms
5) setcpu, auto memory killer, voodoo screen utility
6) have fun

I know it's not really quick and easy but don't forget manufacturers received early versions of the source around May (when it was officially announced). In all honestly I was mostly hoping for 3.2 since I've heard it helps performance but it would be really nice to get a date for ICS.
Strange. I am using a tab 8.9 wifi and I did get the 3.2 update OTA. Actually, it arrived instantly when I started using my device a few weeks ago.

Not actually strange. The US region (yes, Sammy releases ROMs in a region basis) hasn't received official 3.2 as of this day, but most of Europe has already, along with other regions (Asia for example). I really dislike how they manage updates. Thankfully we have devs on our side. I can't imagine being stuck with 3.1 firmware.

Thousand thanks for the heads up.
Well I get my 8.9 Tuesday. I got a refurbished one for $300. I know it comes with Honeycomb 3.2. Now I am assuming that ICS will not be released for the 8.9 or any other tab 1 until the Tab 2's come out. So is it safe to assume that ICS on these Tab 1's will not happen for at least another 1-2 months?
That depends. If you're Tab is the WiFi version only, you can download an unofficial ICS rom in the Android Development forum. If it's the AT&T LTE version, we're mostly likely going to have to wait for the Samsung update (which should be in a few months, hopefully.)
Official ICS update is said to be coming in May.
Sent from my GT-P7310 using Tapatalk 2
That's what I figured. I don't think Samsung would release it before the Tab 2's are out. Both the 7 inch and 10.1 inch version. If I had to gues ICS for the 8.9 will probably come late May....

http://androidcommunity.com/samsung-posts-ics-updates-for-tons-of-canadian-devices-20120430/
Samsung Canada has finished porting Ice Cream Sandwich to a whole bunch of devices, which in Samsung press release parlance means they are "eligible" for an upgrade. Does that mean you can hit that "update" button today and start downloading ICS? Well, that's complicated.
First though, the list of devices:
GALAXY S II
GALAXY S II LTE
GALAXY S II LTE HD
GALAXY S II X
GALAXY Note
GALAXY Tab 7.0
GALAXY Tab 7.0 Plus
GALAXY Tab 8.9
GALAXY Tab 10.1
Now, for the caveats: Sammy says "The upgrade will be available today on select devices in Canada and will continue rolling out to devices and carriers throughout the quarter." and "The availability of the software upgrade and specific models upgradable to Android 4.0 will vary by market and wireless carriers' requirements. For carrier specific details, please visit your nearest carrier retailer." So basically Samsung is saying "We are done, it's up to your carrier." So after the carriers get done testing, poking, and installing bloatware, you'll get your upgrade.
This should be good news for the aforementioned Galaxy owners in other regions too. The software for different regions is about 90% compatible, so your Ice Cream Sandwich updates should be well on their way, too.
The press release isn't exactly clear on exactly who, in Canada, gets Ice Cream Sandwich today and who has to wait. So a question to all our Canadian commenters: What Galaxy device do you have, what carrier are you on, and happens when you mash that update button? Good luck!

Yes i would say the update should be in a few weeks. If anything the Note is the most complicated to update due to its unique software, but its also very popular hence the urgency of the update.

I more than once quoted a link from them (Samsung) saying they would focus on their two flagship devices first (GSII and Note) and then the tablets. It makes sense they delayed the updates because the Galaxy Tab 2 will be released next week in the US. You know, they don't want an update stealing thunder from their recently (or about to as of now) released tablet. I think we will see news about new ICS firmwares next month.
Has there been any indication if T-Mobile will update their original Note to JB 4.1? With AT&T's leaked JB 4.1 update , I'm curious if anyone has heard one way or another where T-Mobile might be with this.

Along with the benefits of the upgrade to 4.1 Jellybean , the original Galaxy Note is getting the Premium Suite upgrade. No word on if/when T-Mobile may pass this along officially.
I've seen the Samsung page about this, and listened carefully at TMoNews.com. Anyone heard or seen anything new about this?
Unless you're really hung up on the premium suite, I don't see any reason not to go to CM10. I'm using a nightly and 4.2.2 is very stable and fast. I can't believe how smooth the screen transitions are, generally a faster phone overall and you're not stuck with all the other bloatware. I do miss wifi calling, but my coverage has somewhat improved where I live. I also have Google Now, which I'm still playing with. I too got sick of waiting for the 4.1.2 update. So if we could get the premium suite and TMO wifi calling ported over to our CM10 distro, it would be perfect IMHO.
I agree that CM10 is a great stable fast rom, but it would be nice for Samsung and T-Mobile to give a little support to our phones. I personally would like to see the Suite make it's way down to us, even as a flash alone package from a dev. But considering the lack of devs for our devices, I won't hold my breath.

I have given up on waiting. Galaxy Note users on Tmobile is so low that I have a feeling they couldn't careless for us anymore if we get the JellyBean update or not. I am here in XDA right now looking for the best custom ROM for the original Galaxy Note. My GNote's stock firmware is already giving me the Windows98-bloated-and-slow effect.
So far I'm leaning more on the Padawan ROM, although not officially for Tmobile, I'll take chance because of the support for the S-Pen. Besides I'm reading on some post that it works.
[UPDATE]
No go on the Padawan. Too much hassle. I need my phone to work, right away. Instead of debugging it, I just installed AvatarROM. I need Wifi Calling though. Please help.
