So basically I realized that an iPad would be ideal for my studies in school, especially for English class, and I kind of sort of want one so I can have the best of both worlds, Android Galaxy S3 (already have) and iOS iPad.
Now this is where it gets hard, I am an employee of Gap Inc. and they have some sort of contract agreement or whatever and we get discounts. I don't know how much but here are the prices
New- iPad 3 $489
New -iPad 2 $391
Is a $100 difference, but should I get the iPad 3 or 2? I don't really understand the major differences and I am hoping someone will explain it to me.

go for ipad3 as it has iPad 3 has:
Bluetooth smart 4.0.
iPad 3 has the advanced technology Camera than iPad 2, iPad 2 has the still Camera of 720p HD and video Camera 0.7 megapixel with 5x digital zoom and 30 fps. iPad 3 has the still camera 1080p HD. The video camera is transferred into 5 MP, still maintaining the 5x digital zoom and 30 fps. Rear camera is auto focus.
ipad3 has much improved display
it has way better processor good for playing games

Having had an ipad3 foisted upon me for the past couple of months by work, I certainly wouldn't waste my money on one.
It's a pile of junk. Browsing the web is slow, especially if you are scrolling through pages with plenty of images on them, even over wifi and when the page is fully loaded so there's no excuse for the jerky scrolling.
I find apps expensive, having to pay for things that on Android are free. Transferring files to it is a PITA with having to use iTunes.
Bluetooth audio will only let you listen to movies played through the movie app. I'd installed HD Player as I had a movie in MKV format. Not only would the audio not work through bluetooth, but the film was unwatchable as the ipad couldn't keep up with it. My sensation on the other hand had no such trouble.
I could go on with all the problems the ipad has or I have with it, but it gets me down just having to use it for work.
I'd much prefer a Transformer prime, or a Google Nexus 7.
iPad 2. You might as well save a 100 dollars since you have the GS3 to do all the hardcore stuff.
*nevermind*
Go with the iPad 3. Apple has an exclusive education arrangement that no android oem has for course and textbook content. The reason for the 3 is it will be a better reading experience for only one hundred more dollars

Buying an Android device won't help him if his school has adopted the iPad as a tool. They might use textbooks from iTunes and so on, and he'll be ****ed if that's the case. Go for the iPad 3 if you have the extra $100.
Ipad 3 for me as it is the best tablet so far i've used
Thanks for the response guys. I think I am going to go ahead and go for the iPad 3 since so many of you say it is better for reading and that will be what I will be doing.

Perhaps someone can help me but I seem to have this quest for any shiny new tablet, I have had several Tablet from the Archos 70, HTC FLyer through to Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 to 10.1" and have kept them from couple of weeks to few months before the novelty wears out, but I just could not resist the nexus when it was announced that I had to pre-order 2!! just in-case.
I keep asking myself if I really need one and I am trying to find a use/excuse for one... nonetheless I ll still buy one if only to root and install ad-blocker so that I can play Angry Bird Ad Free!!!.
Buy the Nexus 7 to run the Eliza Android app. (google it)
It will help analyze why you have this abnormal fixation with shiny new gadgets.
Good luck on finding a cure!
Well to me if you did not like or did not have a use for the Galaxy Tab 7 the Nexus 7 will be the same aside from the better processor.
But only time will tell really as we cant really tell you what YOU will like
what makes you turn away from the tablets your buy? Is it that your phone is so much easier to use or is it that bezel :silly:
If you have the disposable income and it's not hurting anything then why worry about it? I've had the iPad 1, iPad 2, Nook Color, Nook Tablet, Nook Touch, Galaxy Tab 7+, and the Galaxy Tab 8.9. I end up either reselling them or giving them away when I'm done with them, and I pre-ordered the Nexus 7 without any hesitation.

I've got a 32GB iPad 2 and I'm considering selling it and buying a Nexus 7. By the time I've bought the N7 and paid shipping, I wouldn't have much cash left from what my iPad sold for.
But ... that shiny, shiny new toy!

If you do not mind relying on cloud storage, or mainly stream media, read books and browse the Web, the N7 is solid. I will stick with the View 32gb with a 64gb card, since still a nice tab.
I have the TF300 too, so less compelled. Must admit I would have bought one though if had micro sd.

$200 for a wifi tab with only 8gb.I can justify the no camera, the no LTE or even
HSPA+, the 7" form factor, and the no super ips I really want one. But the no SD is a deal breaker and seriously, **** Tegra. I want a quad core krait or even an exynos. And Google's developer device gunning for the kindle fire is a quiet acknowledgment that iPad owns the 10" segment.
I have a 15 " MacBook pro (for school) my old laptop running Windows 8 just for fun, then I have a Asus transformer tf101 with dock for portable productivity, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7" , and Samsung Galaxy s II . I will probably sell the 7"Samsung since its only dual core and has the 10" tablet UI which really is not great on a smaller tablet. So I am really excited about the "hybrid UI" as Google called on the nexus 7.
Sent from my GT-P3113 using XDA Premium HD app
What the OS needs is a TON of installed user base, so that developers get rewarded for the time, in a way close to the iOS. Selling a lot of quad core systems for $199 will hopefully show numbers of installed base that wake some people up. If it sells as well as it should, your going to want a Tegra3 device at that resolution because that is what everything will target.
For example, I saw a post that one of the game dev's who have ignored TFP compatibility is now saying they will be developing for the N7.
I expect my TFP 201 to benefit somewhat from the sales numbers this should do, given the hardware is basically the same. Also given ASUS made the thing, I would imagine getting JB faster than most on the prime will be a near sure thing.

What do you say guys, I have a Droid Razr Maxx and I'm not sure if the 7in screen would be that much different than my phone. So do you guys think I should sell my iPad and buy a Nexus 7 or what.
I wouldnt do it. But think about how you gonna use it, since you have a Android device it should be easier...
Enviado desde Gameboy Pocket
I was thinking the same. My OneX has a 4.7" screen. But when you think about it, a 7" screen is at least double the area of our phone screens. To me a tablet should do something that my laptop cant do already, and that is be ultra portable, and thats where the 7" tablet comes in could even fit in my pants back pocket at a stretch. Plus its only 200$ and a fun toy
I'm selling mine. I have an ipad and a MacBook air 11" so the ipad is out and the nexus 7 is in.

i compared the Samsung 7 tab to the ipad in a store at lunchtime.. the ipad is considerably bigger... that said the size of the Samsung convinced me the Nexus 7 would be a nice jump from my Galaxy Nexus screen so i pre ordered one.. i would have to add 200 euro to my store credit to get the 16gb ipad 3... i think it would be unfair to compare the two really... i am wondering though if i just want a 'living room' device would i be better of with a screen the size of the ipad... the decisions one has to make..
Depends what you use your ipad 2 for. If you play a lot of games on it then I would keep it. Android rocks but the games on it are not even close to what ipad has and is getting. I am hoping one day developers release those games on both systems at same time. I got a Nexus 7 but also keeping my ipad.

I sold mine for 350 as well, but hopefully all of ours will be shipped within the next 3 business days.
I sold my iPad 2 in to buy the Asus Infinity but a few days ago I traded a bunch of games into GameStop and put the credit toward the Nexus 7. I honestly did not have the intention of getting the nexus but GameStop does not have a preorder available for the Infinity yet. Today I received a phone call from GameStop to come pick up the N7, after a little deliberating I decided to do so... Long story not so short... I am soooooooo very happy I got the N7. Honestly, I am debating if I am going to get the Infinity now. I am absolutely very impressed with the N7.

I believe that there is no comparison between the two. n7 is a great device but is more ipad
Any conclusions from the people that sold their iPad 2's to get a Nexus 7? Do you like that you made the trade? Wish you hadn't?
I have the iPad 2 and looking I plan on purchasing the nexus 7 once quality improves. However, for me, I plan on keeping both. Each has their own advantages and disadvantages IMHO.
For my use, a 10 inch (iPad 2) has advantages when my laptop or netbook are not with me. I don't game. I use my iPad 2 for email, calendar, salesforce.com, and basic doc/xls/ppt editing. Most of the time, I travel with just my iPad 2. It may not be a performance powerhouse, but it works consistently and reliably.
A 7 inch(nexus) provides better portability for those times that I need to check something quick (calendar/email/view a doc) and don't want to boot my laptop or netbook.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
use some of the money you made and but some good tegra 3 games especially dark meadow, it's amazing
I do 95% of my gaming on my laptop, the only games I really play on my iPad are words with friends and draw something. I mostly use my iPad for school books and taking notes in class with my stylus.
So I will be receiving a Galaxy Nexus on Monday because I am tired of paying for a contract (and I'm studying abroad in Germany in September, so having an unlocked phone is nice) and I was getting tired of iOS. Its expensive, and quite frankly its boring. Anyways, I am still a firm believer in Mac OSX so I do indeed have a laptop. The next thing I am looking at buying is a Nexus tablet. It is being looked at as the competition to the iPad which is simply an overgrown iPod with more processing power and better graphics. My question is, what makes the Nexus 7 more than just an overgrown Galaxy Nexus / awesome play toy? I am pretty much just trying to justify my purchase of it if I were too hah. I am thinking at the moment that because I do love to travel a lot the Nexus 7 would be great with 8 more gigabytes of memory (which I could fix with a USB drive anyways connected to my Nexus) and a bigger screen to do things on my tablet when I'm traveling and I don't feel like using my phone for some reason. Other than this I can't find a legitimate reason to buy one. Anybody care to give any good reasons to get one?
Simply Because it's a Nexus Device. Only reason why i got it.
I think you're overlooking the bigger screen size. A large HD touchscreen is extremely appealing and more convenient than the restricted size of your already-power-hungry gnex. It helps separate your tasks which in turn let your phone last longer because the tablet can be your dedicated entertainment device and your phone can be, well, your phone
Use your phone for what it's suppose to be used for and take advantage of its smart capabilities when you don't have your tablet. That's why I'm getting one
I thought it was easier to figure out AFTER I bought it!
Phil
Ipad is an overgrown ipod touch and Nexus 7 is an overgrown galaxy Nexus to be honest. Don't get me wrong its great but the truth is if you are happy browsing and using apps on galaxy Nexus screen you don't need a tablet. If you want a bigger screen for video or browsing, etc. Then get a Nexus 7. I have an ipad 3 and bought a Nexus 7 I also have a Samsung windows 7 slate and lenovo android tablet.

I bought the Nexus 7 because it's reasonably cheap and it will be my first tablet. Also, it's a Google device. I also bought the Galaxy Nexus with Google in mind. So yes, I'm a huge Google fan.
cheap, more portable than ipad. honestly, I don't think you should buy one if you already own an iPad. No man carry a tablet around unles they are lugging the backpack, in which case you might as well take your iPad. you trade mo more portability for better viewing experience. Do you think its worth it ? its your call.
I'm using it for school. I'll keep my syllabus and power points on it so that way if I need it, I'll have it. Also math is not my strong point and there's an app MyScript Calculator that helps with equations and I'm hoping that app will evolve some more. Also I like to stream movies, music, and books. Also it's a Google device.
I'm a longtime iOS user and I just got a Nexus 7. Excellent device!
I never liked the iPad when it came out for several reasons...
1) 1024 x 768 (hello 1990 all over again)
2) The weighty feeling after holding it for over 10 mins
3) I was against tablets for several reasons. One big reason was that they cost laptop money for less the functionality/productivity.
What I liked about the Nexus 7 was that it resolved all my issues that the iPad (and other tablets) brought to me, in addition to giving me greater control over the device. Plus there are more tablet apps available than I expected. I am sold on Android 110% now.

The way I make my Xoom fairly portable I just have it in a sleep and it has a little handle on the back so slip had in there and it's like a little notebook.
As well it has a tine pock on it for my stylus.
And for protection when it's out of the puch I have a Kevlar skin on it from Skinit.com
The nexus though I am not going to cover it up cause it's so light lol
I ordered one to replace my Nook Color. After having that and playing around with an iPad I just like the 7 inch screen size better. Anything over that, to me, just feels like having a monitor in my hand. I was worried about the storage size at 8gb but I really don't use that much space on my Nook. Only difference is that it's not a device that I would game on and I WILL be gaming on my N7. I guess it will help my habit of having too many games and not finishing them if I can only fit a couple. My card has been charged but no shipping info yet but I figure it should be here by Friday hopefully.

Yeah I feel thats what I'd use mine for. I think when I get paid this Friday I'm going to order one
I'm a Galaxy Note user and have stretched out all my pockets so the Nexus 7 will fit no problem now.
Reasons I bought the Nexus
Had been thinking of the Kindle Fire since I read alot when traveling. Cut down on the space books take up. Then decided that my brewing software would work on the nexus and would be better than the SGS2.
Finally setermined that it could serve as a 7" GPS traveler, just using an app that has on board maps and no need for data. That pushed it into something useful. Enjoy yours.
Hi guys, I will be getting my Nexus 7 16GB tomorrow.Very excited! I will be using it mostly for gaming, web surfing, and maybe some Netflix/Movies. Just wanted to get some feedback on some of your experiences so far with the device. And your overall impression of the device. Thanks guys.

Its an amazing device for the price. Well worth it. Came from a 10 inch HP Touchpad and much prefer the 7 inch form factor now.

It's a really great device. Storage is it's only weakness. The16gb version should be your only option, though it's not enough either. But I love it. Feels like it's easily worth double the price.
I have only owned a capacitive tablet in the past with Android Eclair on it, that was complete balls and turned me completely off tablets.
The N7 is amazing, I can fit it in my pocket still, its powerful, the screen is crystal clear and responsive, amazing device that has restored my view of tablets in general.
Enjoy!
I've had my 8gb for about 12 hours and absolutely love it, I had a 16gb Asus Transformer up until yesterday and this is so much better. I agree with the previous poster regarding form factor, the Nexus is so much more comfortable to hold for long periods of time.
Jelly bean + Tegra 3 = Amazing performance.

Love it, easily the best tablet I have owned.
I was unsure of the 7in formfactor, but am now convinced.
I also know 7 people that have ordered them off the back of playing with mine, and several iPad3's up for sale as a result.
Nexus 7 was my first step into the Tablet world and i have to say coming from a Galaxy Note, i loved every bit of it. Its build quality is just awesome which makes it feel premium in the hand. It is packing some serious specs with a quad core CPU and 12 core oGPU and the software is very brilliantly optimised for the device. So everything has been great so far, however the only downside to the tablet is: lack of storage (not expandable) and the lack of a rear facing camera. Overall it is a great device and for the price point nothing even comes close to it. However dont overrate it becasue although it gives you the bang for the buck, all the hype is causing people to expect too much from it even with such a low pricepoint.
Thank you guys for all of your input. I just picked up the 16GB version from my local OfficeMax. It was their last one. And they only received 2 of them. I'm just about to open this bad boy up. Very excited!

I was curious too, with all the threads about defects and issues. It's scared me away...... I want a tablet, and would love to have one for college.....although I'm not sure where it would fit in since I've never owned a tablet.

Let us know you're thoughts. How much did it come out to?
It's a great tablet. Unfortunately I got two Nexus 7s with defective screens, so I'm not too happy at the moment.

this forum only makes up 0.1% of the people with Nexus 7's.. don't let these threads stop you from buying it.. all devices will have their problems.. even Apple products have issues..
But enough about that.. its many great apps in the market that makes great for college usage.. we got great note taking apps like "Evernote" "Springpad" the size is perfect to fit in any bag
I love my 16 GB nexus 7..u said u will be mainly gaming on the tab my gripe is that many game publishers havent optimized their games for tegra 3..dark knight returns and nova 3 for example are extremely choppy in comparison to how they run on other platforms....its not really the hardware its the game devs not optimizing code...I mean what good is a 12 core GPU if its barely being utilized...I have a tfp also and its the same issue with choppiness in certain games that should absolutely not be present.

I just got mine today. Ordered it July 19 "2-day shipping" LOL. Anyway device arrived intact. Screen appears to be well stuck onto device. Lol
It is beautiful. Can't find a defect anywhere so far. The only thing that sucks is I have not been able to install Whatsapp! It says my device is not compatible with this version. Everything else flawless though.
Only had mine a few hours. No issues that I've noticed. Better than I thought it was going to be, a nice size to use, less bulky than iPad but much more usable than a smartphone. Much faster than the Asus TF101 and Jelly Bean is far better than Honeycomb.
I'm loving mine! Had it for a couple days now and it is fantastic to type on! It gets a little difficult in landscape but that's fine with me. The only annoyances as of now is where the nav bar is when you go landscape. I saw that on the Galaxy nexus in landscape the bar goes to the side with the device. On this tablet, it stays in the middle making it difficult to touch. This device isn't all that good in portrait landscape besides for watching stuff. It really made me fall in love with stock Android all over again. Shame my phone uses sense
Using my nexus as I type this. And I must say this thing is amazing. Blazing fast. Beautiful display. Very comfortable to hold in the hand and has a premium feel to it. I haven't tried any gaming yet and will check to inform you guys how that goes. The only thing I have noticed is while watching the transformer movie that was preloaded on the device, it skips and lags just a bit every now and then. Other than that I have no complaints so far. I will post some more thoughts after more use. Thanks for your advice guys.

I really like my N7. I've had it for a couple weeks now and no complaints. The iPad has taken a backseat.

When I watched Transformers, it was not preloaded - it was streamed from the Cloud. It did pause - occasionally - for the streaming to catch up.
None of your freebies come preloaded, although you can download them.
Not sure which is more of a waste - Transformers or the ads posing as magazines.
Gaming is fantastic...
Well I was planning to buy my first tablet with the spare 500$ laying around. While doing some research, I thought " What will I do with a tablet?" . Here are some answers that I got
Play games
Watch Vidoes anywhere
Have Android on a big screen
????
Profit?
None of these answers where convincing and so I wanted to ask the community over here as many of you would have tablets.
Thanks
I use mine for a little bit of everything I'm a huge reader so mostly books. I have a nexus 7 good luck with whatever you get
And if you wanted an android with a huge screen get a galaxy note lol

I used my Xoom to get back into comics. Hadn't read them since I was like 12 and back then I was never able to have a huge collection at my fingertips.
I'd use mine to run Linux and have a full os..... but I don't have one :/ .... guess my note is close enough got to love 5inch screens

I couldn't find any uses for mine... I gave it to my mom... guess I coulda used it for xda, but I'm always on the laptop... and the tv's right in front of me...
Web browsing is my main use, secondary is gaming.
I use mine for...
1. Web browsing (XDA and all the other good stuff on the internet)
2. Games
3. Movies, Videos (YouTube and blah)
4. GPS
ipad is useful as a doormat
Just get a good laptop or upgrade your phone, Tablets aren't that useful

Opinion. Tablets definitely have a use, I dare you to find a laptop that weighs as little as a tablet with 10 hour battery life.

You got me there
I like web browsing on the Nexus 7 better than on my computer.
These are all awesome points but the only thing i cant get past is that i can do basically everything i can do on a tab and more on my phone. Im constantly texting people so is have to switch back and forth and it just doesnt seem practical.

Tablets are first and foremost media consumption devices. They are terrible for productivity unless you get something of the transformer line and cannot play many high end games. Internet browsing, light games, and movies/videos are what tablets do best. They are the portability step in between ultrabooks and smartphones.

Is the Nexus 7 screen big enough? I think the iPad's 9.6 inch is too big, and I haven't played with Nexus 7 till now. Does anyone know a shop where I can play with it? I tried Staples, Fry's and Best Buy and none of them have it on display.
So everyone just bought a tablet to do the same stuff their phones do?
So all in all, tablets are just giant cellphones with no 3g/4g(mostly)

That's how I kinda felt... Every purpose it had I had something better for the same purpose... TV to watch things... Phone for communications and messing around with on the go (when I go)... Computer for computing stuff...
Not saying there isn't uses for it, just I couldn't get into it... I still go take it back to throw a new rom release on it though...

Yeah, I feel the iPad screen is too big also, that's why I went with 7 inch tablets. And the N7 has a high enough resolution that text is still readable when zoomed out.

Bigger screen. The difference between a 4 inch screen and a 7 inch screen is huge.
