i am updating my phone to jellybean, and for this, i need to flash jb kernel, bt cwm has no any option to flash that kernel because kernel is in .ftf, and only zip file can be flashed. what should i do ?
You can't flash kernel from CWM. You have to do it with Flashtool.

Yep, do it via flashtool bro. Next time be sure to search please

have you unlock your device ?
you don't understand about how to flash custom kernel...so its mean you don't understand about how to unlock bootloader.
Before flashing custom rom you must read "Requrement and Installation" carefully.

I have a x8 unlocked bootloader and rooted .
I have already download the stock kernel .ftf file and flashed it using flashtool for my xperia x8 which is running xperience walkman mod 1.0 but it was no luck ... i tried to flash stock rom first but cwm would not flash it
i did tried to flash the kernel but i boot up it will just stuck at the sony ericsson logo and i am unable to enter recovery ..
Can anyone help me?
Flash stock kernel and use seus
Sent from my X8 using XDA
To the best of my knowledge, you can flash kernels only via flashtool. CWM won't help. And the kernel .ftf file must have a loader.sin in addition to a kernel.sin when viewed via flashtool.
I remember a day I flashed my X8 37 times within 24hours! At times, it would get temperamental & fail to boot beyond the SE logo screen for reasons it alone knows. Cheer up. And get flashing!
Hmmm... i dont want to use SEUS because by then i would have to reroot and even unlock bootloader again i tried couple of times to flash the stock kernel but my phone just stuck at the se logo

Which kernel are you tried to flash? You can use flashtool to flash your kernel, and install ROM with CWM! If you are flashing aNa kernel, CWM is already built-in. If you still struck at SE logo, mean your kernel is not flash yet.

Well, there's actually still ADB but it carries a certain amount of risk. With flashtool, most of that is obviated. If you need more information, scout the Android Development section for related topics.
Search in the Flashtool post the list of official firmwares, and flash one of these (yes, only that )
If the links are dead, send me a PM and I will give you the ftf that I have
I do have the .ftf file and flashed it.. but my phone will just stuck there

My question: I have a SGN infected with the eMMC bug, and I want to upgrade it to the latest stock ROM. I know very little about flashing, and I know there are some risks when doing some things. I would like to know if the first link is safe for me, and which ROM I should use of the ones listed there (I live in The Netherlands). Do you guys have any tips or some guides made for the noobs among us?
that 1st link is the safest and best.
download the rom of. your choice. It. doesn't need to be of. your region. although you can check the latest firmware on www.samfirmware.com....
Once downloaded, use pc odin with the downloaded rom tar.md5 file selected in the pda tab. The connect the phone to pc in download mode and press start.
If you are upgrading to ics, then do not do any wipes, first flash a safe kernel...

Thanks for replying. Good to know that that thread is safe, but what do you mean by flashing a safe kernel? Those terms mean nothing to me.
theres two way to flash ROM. 1 is using PC ODIN and the other one is CWM
Flashing Via PC ODIN .. you need to have two thing.. The Rom You Want to flash and the PC-ODIN software
Flashing Via CWM.. you need two things. You need to root your phone and you need to install CWM.
every rom comes with modem, kernel (the file that govern how to handle your phone cpu), csc... the kernel inside ics is known to have brickbug
theres no need to flash kernel if you are flashing Rom via PC ODIN... Flashing kernel is when you are using CWM....

So, I can just flash any ROM using ODIN, and there will be no risk bricking my device?
If I flash a ROM, will I have a fresh install, and will my kernel also change so that I don't have the brickbug anymore?

yes you can flash any ROM using ODIN safely without bricking your device.
yes you will have a fresh install. your kernel will change too. as for the brickbug....
If you flash via PC ODIN then everything is stock to what you flashed.the kernel the firmware the csc the modem..all as stock provided....
1.If you flash ICS via PC-ODIN then your kernel also would be stock ics kernel that has brickbug..
Warning :
Don't wipe anything from stock ICS recovery
Don't factory reset/Hard reset on stock ICS.
Don't flash any Wipe version of ICS ROM
let say you want to flash Latest JB Rom but you are on ICS stock.
first thing you need to do is root your device ...install CWM.. Flash safe kernel
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
let say ive rooted... installed CWM with safe kernel...
what i always do is everytime i want to flash new rom whatever rom it is...i flash Speedmod 3-15 (safe kernel) and go to Advance>reboot recovery and flash any rom i want so that im on the safe side without worrying what kernel im on.
2.If you flash GB than your kernel will be GB kernel which is safe to wipe..
if you want to flash custom rom from gb then you root your device and installed CWM and Flash since GB kernel is safe.
but.. let say u flashed ICS and wanted to go back to GB. then you are not safe anymore,,, that is why i always flashed Speedmod kernel 3-15 (safe kernel) and reboot recovery (by going to advance>rebootrecovery) and flashed any rom... that way im always sure that im in safe kernel when flashing Rom

do i understand that right, that i can root my stock gingerbread by flashing this cwm/philz kernel, without the need to wipe any data?
i just want to flash ultimate rom. it says i need cwm. i don't fully understand why cwm comes together with a kernel and why that kernel gives root on any rom. how to root topic doesn't mention the flashing of just a kernel to get root. i guess i got something wrong here?
baseband XXLA4 - GB 2.3.6
You cannot flash PhilZ kernel on a GB Rom. It wouldn't boot up if you did.

for the Note the kernel and recovery are integrated, each kernel has a corresponding cwm recovery and root features too
so when you want to root a rom you have to flash a suitable kernel which will give it a cwm recovery to flash custom roms from and it will also give root features too.
Phillz kernels root stock ICS Touchwizz roms when flashed from stock recovery. after a complete reboot you can safely wipe from recovery and flash custom roms.
BTW - this thread belongs to the QA forum.

You can't flash ANYTHING from stock 3e GB recovery. It won't pass signature verification.
(Unlike ICS). You need to root it first, then use an app such as mobile odin to flash a kernel which has CWM recovery.

We do not have to unlock bootloader.
Install CoCore kernel, you will get custom recovery. And install ROM with it.
1. ROOT.
2. CoCore.
For first install of CoCore do this: Install Universal kernel flash, and some explorer with root permissions like Root explorer or ES file explorer. Download CoCore zip, unpack it and use kernel.bin.md5 file with Universal kernel flash. After that you will get CWM or TWRP (depends what CoCore version you choose). From that part you can change kernel by installing its zip from recovery.
3. Download JB custom ROM, copy to phone - and install it from recovery.

You do not need to do it again, but you could. Because there are some other files in that zip - and those are not being installed with Universal kernel flash.

When you flash stock JB firmware (not ROM) you get all stock, ready to pass warranty.
If you want to go to GB, you need to follow guide how to do that. Because you will get bootloop if you just flash GB from Sammobile.

Hi!
Can I just download cwm from here https://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager and flash it via stock recovery like I had done with all my other phones? (Stock android 4.1.2)
I read many forums about that I have to flash Philz kernel first and use odin but is it necessary anymore? I also tried to look different kernel+cwm versions from Philz but newest download doesnt have any different kernel version (or I just dont find them).
You will need to use philz to root. On this phone recovery is in kernel.
