Can't turn on my phone - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there,
First let me explain what happened.
I had CM10 installed on my device and last night it kept on restarting and never getting to the bootloader so I first tried to reflash cm10 but the same happened. I had a cm9 backup on my device and tried restoring that but no luck there either. same problem. Then I decided to flash the phone back to stock and work my way up from there.
I opened odin, loaded the pit, pda, phone and csc files and hit start.
Odin showed me the green light with pass but my phone does not load. It enters recovery just before it was supposed to start booting.
I get the following message with the respective colors:
-- Copying media files...
Successfully copied meida files.
-- Deleting files...
E:failed to mount /data (file exists)
E:delete_data_files:Can't mount /data
your storage not prepared yet. please use UI menu for format and reboot actions.

already updated filesystem. finished
Successfully updated filesystem.
--Wiping cache...

Cache wipe failed
--Appling Multi-CSC...

So can anyone help me? Please?

eh just shipped the phone about 15 minutes ago. maybe this would have worked. seems more viable than just flashing over and over again

[Q] HELP! Cant mount /sd-ext

Guys,
I dont know what I did but I can no longer do a factory wipe.
CMW says "Error: Can't mount /sd-ext" Ive tried reformatting / repartitioning the sdcard. it just keeps saying cant format.
I tried CWM 2.5.1.2, then i even flashing it again and tried a 3x version of CWM.
I just wanna be able to flash roms again. Please help
ANY HELP / SUGGESTIONS IS APPRECIATED.
Hey, there are a couple of threads that talk about
"Error: Can't mount <something>" ... you should check them out. I also recommend doing a search for "Cant' mount" you will find a lot of threads talking about a related problem.
Here are some, I hope they solve your problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=678845
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133219
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1252602
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=848967
good luck.
ive tried all of those
my issue isnt mounting the sd card but rather the sd-ext partition. ive rrad all these threads and tried everything stated.
Also. it seems i have 2 different CWMs. 2.5.1.2 when i flash into recovery from ROM Manager and 3.0.x when i go into recovery manually.....how is this possible and how can i fix this?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
you shouldnt need to mount the external sdcard in CWM. you flash things from the internal sdcard
when i try to wipe data to flash a new rom it says

"
im unable to wipe data so im currently unable to flash anything

thats completely normal.
wiping data has nothing to do with flashing anything.
CWM is unable to mount the sd-ext on our phones because it has a different location (sdcard/ex-sdcard) than most phone (mnt/emmc)

So hey all,
Recently my Galaxy just stopped working. At home I tried to install new firmware. Then I got a lot of errors.
This is what I get when I go in my Recovery Mode:

When I install new firmware I get errors the same like this.
Now I have tried to install all firmwares (from 2.2.1 to 2.3.6) and nothing works.
I had my Galaxy running on a costum ROM (I don't remember the name, it was something with Ario).
What to do? I'm quite lost..

solutions for /dev/block/mmcblk0p2 or /mmcblk0p1 or /mmcblk0p0 are all never the same, it all depends on as to what caused the format failure .
You can try flashing the same ROM twice or more with different PIT ( i9000 has 3 PIT files)
But if the problem was caused by Lagfix, which you had failed to undo before a factory reset or upgrade...than your Internal SD card needs to be reformatted back to rfs.(vfat) ..which is why the stock ROM fails to solve the problem as your current format is in ext 4.
So nothing will work, IF your internal SD card had been converted to Ext 4 format, until you find a way to format it back to vfat.
For Korean version of Galaxy S , flashing an Eclair will solve all problems except this lagfix problem. So you can try the Eclair for i9000 at My Android Collections
Suggest you try to format your Internal SD card ( remove ext SD card and Sim Card) , before trying any ROMS

[Q] what exactly means "manual format /system"

Hi everyone,
Many custom roms nowadays have in their instalation instructions a point that sais that it is recommended to perform a "manual format /system". I'd like to ask what does it mean exactly? After doing full wipe/factory reset, cache and dalvik wipe should I open aroma and delete "/system" folder?
I've tried to google it but it doesn't seem to appear anywhere.
I'm really sorry for my bad english.
cheers

Manually formatting /system is recommended because it delete the system inbuilt apps which may not be compatible with the new ROM which you are going to install,
Apparently, even if the base is the same !
It is recommended by dev's ! It better to do it
I believe it happens for the rom to find completely blank space to extract withought creating malfunctions.
Manually formatting means that after you wipe data/ factory reset.. open mounts and storage (not aroma) and there you'll find an option to format system

This doesn't wipe internal SD
Quick explanation
/system/ is the system partition in android, while
/storage/sdcard0/ is the internal SD
You might also have
/data/
/datadata/
And so on, formatting either of these in cwm won't affect the others, so internal storage is safe unless you choose to wipe it.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
/system is the folder that contains everything of your ROM. Devs ask to manually format the /system because it will completely wipe the ROM of your phone, including the kernel provided together with the ROM. This is to make sure full functionally of the new ROM you're installing.

Wiping /datadata is not a factory reset which prevents bootloops like yours. Wipe /data, /cache and dalvikcache, after flash the rom you want again and it should boot up

If you read the link [Tutorial] How to Unbrick, Flash, Downgrade, Root, Update i9000 from Froyo to Kit Kat, everything was mentioned in it and links to download were given in it. Only the you need to be careful which download link you click, as this free file server is bit tricky, they have included a lot of download links on it, just us free download button, a number of times , for download to begin.
on the other hand you can use the link you mentioned too, but you may need to download a CF rooting kernel to go with it.

[Q] Restored to Factory with Odin; still won't boot

HI, all,
My phone was kind of unstable for a while, with lots of error messages saying "this app needs to close." Last night the battery died during the night, and when I replaced it with a charged battery and turned on the phone, it would only boot to the devil kernel screen, then it would stop. I spent hours reading on the Internet and in these forums, and it seemed my best bet was to restore to stock via instrux on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
That seemed to go well, but at the end the phone didn't reboot like it should have. I get to the At&T screen, then the phone shuts off. Not only that, I can't even get into recovery mode now. I don't know what to do now, and I honestly can't understand most of the lingo in the threads to know if there's already the instruction I need out there. I'm sorry to ask you all to repeat yourselves. I'm totally new to this. Please help.
The phone had been rooted and had devil kernel and CyanogenMod 10 (i think). It was running a version of jelly bean that was out on this site in August. That's all I know (ex-bf rooted it for me). Any advice is much appreciated!!!
Try 4-2ndtwin's one click Odin stock kk4 ROM. Maybe without bootloader version, assuming you haven't lost the GB bootloader.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18370912
You will need to get into download mode. There are stickies in this forum that tell you how to do that.
Designgears thread won't help you, I think. It's pre-gingerbread.
If you can get to KK4 ROM, then flash the Corn 7 kernel with Odin, then you will have CWM recovery and can flash the CM10.1.0 RC-2 ROM which will be better than what your bf had available in August.

Thanks for this advice. I flashed the Odin kk4 ROM, and now I get the GB bootloop. Might that mean that I need the bootloader after all?
EDIT: When booting, my phone was also flashing colorful, scrambled-cable-looking screens. I found another thread in the forums where someone had this issue, and the response to that person's query was that the person needed to flash the bootloader. So, I went back to the link you gave me and got the version with the bootloader. I flashed that, and now I still have a bootloop, but it loads a couple of more screens. The colorful screen is gone. Any suggestions now? In reading other threads, it seems like there are a few options. I'm not sure which to go with.
Not sure about flashing bootloader.
Flash kk4 again w/o bootloader.
Sometimes takes two flashes.

And the advice for fixing is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1447303
It involves setting up an external SD card to act as an internal one by partitioning the card through CWM. I have no idea how to get into CWM. Maybe I'll still play around with it to see if I can salvage something, but I think I'm going to get another phone to use at this point.
Thanks for your help!
