Wrong. See 1:39 in this video that explains why you're wrong
This isn't rooting with locked bootloader. You might as well not even re-lock it.
it kinda is because u relock it at the end so in theory it is

As do custom ROM's and kernels apparently. So does opening the device and taking out a screw. But since this is a Nexus device, from what I understand, you can unlock the bootloader and root without any concern for warranty (don't quote me on this). Custom ROM's and kernels however, idk. But if you are at all considering turning the device in for RMA, you should factory restore anyway (Google provides factory images, and you can lock the bootloader again).
As for this guide, it's basically telling us "you can root, you just have to unlock the bootloader", and this isn't anything new at all :/ . I came here thinking this might be a solution for people who might want to root without loosing all their data during the unlock process...
Also as for relocking the bootloader, in my opinion, you may as well leave it unlocked. If at all in the future you decide to try a custom Kernel or ROM (maybe), you'll have to then go through the process of re unlocking your bootloader and thus, wiping everything again...
And for some final notes, the tool is already pretty popular, so most newcomers should be able to find it, with a little searching on their own In any case though, an actual guide that lays out how to root without a program, now that would be worthy of it's own topic

Agreed.
I have a tutorial that some of you might find useful for getting the contents of a locked safe.
1. Unlock safe
2. Empty contents of safe
3. Lock safe

LOL, that was funny heh.
Now talking about rooting, the ONLY way to do it safely (and properly, I might add) is using the Google Developer tools.
Stay away from those toolkits and your phone/tablet will not end up bricked. I wrote a tutorial how to set your computer with Google drivers and ADB, do it and be safe forever knowing you will do it the Google way.

If you live in the U.S. you are protected from such warranty rules by the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act of 1975 (15 U.S.C. § 2301 et seq.). The only thing that legally voids your warranty is damaging the device. As long as you do not damage it you can do just about anything you want to with it because it belongs to YOU (an oft forgotten principle called "property rights"). Unlock it, root it, open it up etc. Just don't damage it.
Unless they can show how you damaged the device, they must, by law, honor the warranty!
Yeah, if you soft-brick it by giving the wrong permission on system files, you damaged it. But the nice folks here at XDA will show you how to recover (and yeah, I managed to achieve Boot-Loop on my N7 within an hour of opening the box...TWICE... )
Op seriously?
Wrong way to earn thanks............

This isn't a carrier-subsidized phone, it's a Nexus. Unlocking the bootloader and thus root is a feature fully supported out of the box.
Nothing special here, you can easily root any Nexus device.
We buy Nexus devices because we expect its bootloader to be easily unlocked (fastboot oem unlock) and easy to root, and the direct Google updates.
Sent from my R800x
Everyone knows on nexus its just a case of fastboot oem unlock
I was hoping for a source, cause who ever it is already has their hands on a device... we could get a system dump maybe?
Wow, amazing.. Or not. You only need one command to unlock a nexus phone, it is a built in feature.

im glad everyone knows how to unlock the bootloader, that doesnt give you root though.
with custom kernel that means someone had to have pulled the stock image off using an exploit that works on 4.2 (in which case the device in question may be fully stock except root). with custom recovery it isnt impossible to do without the stock kernels but it certainly makes it a bit more time consuming.
so while im happy everyone knows its indeed a nexus device this proves 1 of two things, someone already has a 4.2 ready exploit (doubt it would go public any time soon tho), or some for of custom recovery is already made for the device.

The only purpose of an exploit on a device with an unlockable AND relockable bootloader is to save some people from wiping /data. That's it. You can achieve the exact same thing with unlock->root->lock. There was only a couple people who seemed to possibly be implying that unlock bootloader means root. The rest of us were saying with open source recovery and fastboot oem unlock and the fact that exploits don't matter, the rooting of this device is a forgone conclusion.

As i said in my post i get that custom recoveries are used for that. everyone seemed to be bashing this thread but as i said it holds more valuable information than most of the threads on this forum. if someone made a custom recovery then chances are day one of shipment it will publicly available and everyone can root using it, its a step towards development regardless, you wouldnt shun someone showing off TWRP/CWM on the N4 saying "oh its a nexus that was easy.." its the same work to get root.
if this was rooted using an exploit then even better news IMO, sure its "fairly" useless on this device (although using it you can then grab dumps of the images and make recovery etc). but there are a lot of devices out there who could use this exploit.
but yes i agree that this phoen would have had a way to root very quickly regardless, just amazed to see people think they could root it the same way as they did their other nexus devices (which prolly had recovery before they got the device)
Excuse my n00by question here, but if I were to unlock my bootloader which I am going to do as soon as my N4 has some charge, that isn't going to give me Root which is what I want but eh.
Is there any known working method of rooting this device at the moment? Is it likely that Bin4ry's ICS/JB exploit will work here?

Its a device identical to RAZR M except for US cellular. A smaller carrier. The device is not as popular as the RAZR m and does not yet have a development thread of its own.
As for the rewrite. I have not seen much activity on this thread. the device is not very popular. If someone really feels the need to have the guide rewritten I would be happy to do so. Just shoot me a pm. I'm on my phone so sorry for the grammar errors my computers Linux swap is gone and I am too lazy to fix right now. So until then... grammar errors.
It is not truly yours until you have voided the warranty.
@willblake13 - While I (and I'm sure others) appreciate your "rooting the M" write-up, I am still holding out for a way that is less "visible" to the manufacture. I would be worried that registering at Motorola for the unlocked bootloader would pretty much guarantee you will not get any warranty service.
That being said, as frustrated as I have been with the lack of root/development on the "M", I might void my warranty too.
PS - Any idea if a bootloader unlocked phone is still eligible for the coming JB update??

no need to be sad you can still unlock bootloader and do everything you want except S-OFF as of now. Only if you are from verizon you are doomed. So head to HTCDEV unlock bootloader use hasoon toolkit for easy bootloader unlocking. flash twrp recovery. Download any custom rom you like and welcome. But keep in mind unlocking bootloader wipes complete 32gb storage so anything important must be backed up below is link for toolkit

Sorry man , sounds like you are one of the ones stuck , basically to unlock the bootloader you need to select a toggle in developer options to allow oem unlock, which leaves you in a bad spot because you cant boot into the operating system. Did you lock your bootloader? or did it lock when you flashed 5.1.

Please stop spreading misinformation
Firstly - that thread is not to force unlock a bootloader. It is to recover from a brick where the bootloader was broken and couldn't be used. The guy from Motorola who provided the fix in that very thread said this will not help unlock a bootloader.
Secondly - there are still no confirmed cases of this working to force unlock a bootloader. 1 guy was not in the same situation as you, so that can be discounted. The other guy hasn't said much. No one else has managed to recover from this. The probability is not very high as you say. It is extremely low.

Yea look at samfail page.
Verify what softwear version you are on and use appropriate version,
There is no root for 8.0 so you will have to downgrade to a older U3 bootloader to root if on 8.0
Ok Im on oreo 8.0, I have never rooted this phone but looking at the steps on samfail its 3 different versions of it and what im getting is you have to flash them in order but someone says just flash samfailv3, can some one please tell me what bootloader i need, the proper steps, just a complete walkthrough because i dont wanna mess my phone up and i wanna make sure im doing this correctly, thanks in advance or at least tell me what all i need instead of directing me to samfail thread, its alot going on in that thread and my brain cant process it all.

This is essentially a RTFM situation. You won't find much help unless you can actually demonstrate something. If you were stuck at a particular step, someone could help you, but you are asking for a walk through for just the first step.
Yes those mods are available to rooted note 8's but do you know how to apply them, or would you be right back here asking for a step-by-step guide for that as well?
Please don't think I (or anyone) is trying to be mean here. You just need to do your own research and figure it out, and if you brick your phone, you brick your phone. That is how many of us learned.
Come back with some actual questions and you will get actual answers. That said, your "how-to" has already been written here
Basically you need to figure out which firmware you have installed, downgrade via ODIN if not compatible, follow the rest of the steps using ODIN, and you'll have root. If you've rooted a Samsung device before this should not be difficult for you.
STAYING STOCK and safe.
Over the years, the only two reasons I would root my Android phone:
Get rid of ads
Hotspot
With the Note-8, you can modify the settings and get hotspot to work w/out rooting...........there's a thread out there for instructions.
I found an app that controls/eliminates the ads via VPN, runs in the background with very little battery drainage if any at all.
You can also download DnsChanger(Open Source) from the PlayStore and use these DNS Servers from AdGuard to block advertisements, tracking, and phishing globally on your phone.

Yes. That will always be a thing unless the bootloader gets unlocked.
that 80% thing definitely makes it a no go for me

If I downgrade i can prevent bootloop for one, secondly there are many qualities to root, dual speakers, custom roms when they roll out, etc. Reasons y I wanna root it.

There's no advantage to root unless you have a custom recovery. Also you don't need root to run custom ROMs, a custom recovery will do all you need, plus most ROMs come rooted.
Point is, I'd rather have a custom recovery over root. The custom recovery will fix a bootloop, flash ROMs, themes, apps and maybe one or two things I'm forgetting.
Lastly, I'm not seeing any custom recoveries for carrier locked Note 8s. Heck, unless I'm missing something, I'm seeing anything for unlocked ones.
