Talk like a child all you want, rules are rules. Its not just about rules anyway, Its about respecting the forum and posting in correct sections and not filling the dev section with off-topic posts.
PS. No im not a mod, I own and run various of my own forums and other sites so know how annoying it can be when people dont take 5 seconds to think about where to post, not just from a Admins point of view but from a user who wants to browse the forum and not have to filter through off topic posts.

Atheist politely reminded many people to think first including the member who made a mistake.
All you did was spill out the acid barrel in your heart. You insulted a strong, helpful member and the person who started the thread! You have made several nasty responses to people giving fair reminders. Why can't you control your rage?
My 2 cents as also an admin and mod in various forums:
TheAtheist kindly IGNORE those who post in wrong sections and by that i encourage all other members to do the same. You want help follow the rules. Telling noobs what they should do just spurts out those raging bullies (and hurts thr BAN button in mod/admin cp ). In all forums i mod or admin it comes down to this. Noob not obeying the rules, someone tells him, flaming starts. I come down and ban. Really frusturating. Words of gold to everyone so i am repearing them:
You want help, FOLLOW THE RULES!
hi, could you help me?.how do you did that. i cant find the files to download
Just follow the link in my signature. Read the PDF, and start your action from page 7 only.

My 2 cents about a thread that was closed titled "why so rude"

There was a thread that was closed in another forum that was closed while I was typing my opinion.
Original thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1642934)
If a noob comes in and asks a question that has been asked what you guys call countless times before, ignore it! Someone will answer it without being rude. And that will add to information.
I have been a member of this forum for years, and was a lurker for years before that. I can't tell you how many times I've searched for something only to find a thread with a question that didn't get answered. Instead I read through pages of flameage. If the question had been answered I could have moved on.
Like it or not you e-**** heads with your greater than thou complex are as much the problem as the noobs you hate.
And the truth of the matter is, that thread with the 3000 posts that have had the same question asked 100 times has 800 flames for the noobs that asked them.

Check his signature. All problems would be solved if search was used. Even half the noob video for this site is telling noobs not to start a new thread and use the search.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they shouldn't search. It would be nice if they did, but they don't and all the complaints, flames, rudeness isn't going to change that.

I honestly miss the old days of this site were if you didn't have anything to contribute, you didn't post and got flamed the whole way if did. I'm tired of all the noobs posting in the forums nowadays. So much so, that I don't go into the device forums much nowadays because of all the noob bs. If we would have never stopped the whole throwing of flaming fish heads in the first place, there would be no reason to have the 10 post rule. Would not have that problem. It all started because we moved to a softer more PC approach to noobs. Then hell broke loose.
My 2 cents is to go back to flaming noobs until they either leave or shut up and search and read.
---------- Post added at 07:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:09 PM ----------
That right there would stop the need to have the same question answered 200 times. It gets reported as a bug, not a question. Gets developed. Gets fixed. And an update or solution is published. Wouldn't even need a Q&A if we went back to the way it was. I think most nowadays don't even know what a bug report is. They just whine about what is not working rather than trying to help.
I'm glad the old days are gone. "Flaming noobs" is no way to get things accomplished on XDA. This isn't a site for bullying, name-calling and making people feel bad about themselves. If you really want to know what this site is really about, read zelendel's post.
Don't forget, we were all "noobs" once. No one person knows all there is to know about everything. Learn to ignore people and quit the flaming. It really serves no purpose and it's a waste of time and thread space.
With that being said, I'm going to leave it at that and close this thread before it possibly gets out of hand with people saying why it's a good idea or bad idea to flame other members. Then this thread will turn into a flaming thread.

how noobs make you feel :P

this thread is basically for anyone who wants to express how they feel when a new
member or just a member asking a silly quistion makes you feel i have attached a
video of how i felt just minutes ago when i was asked how to flash a rom...... worrying
so start telling or showing us how silly quistion or comments make you feel
and hopefully we get some laughs out of this
I don't think this will last long as its basically a complaining thread.

[XSola] Freedom of Internet (on XDA forums) >>> Discussion <<<

Hello community.
I am old fan of these forums (changed 5-6 phones over years) and always find it most usefull from all other over internet. Recenty I have feeling that this XDAdeveloper network became something they initial wanted to avoid and over the years they strugle with petitions etc.
THE FREEDOM OF INTERNET (and your right to speak free)
Fact: Threads are closed on every mimics and blinks of eyes all over the forums or posts deleted.
Please consider this as Discussion but not flaming and be gentle and polite to everyone who rise voice. What's are your thoughts?

Coz it was continuously being spammed wid useless posts so it was btr to close it off
There has to be a balance between freedom and rules
100% freedom means no rules and thus things going out of control
Xda is well managed
Rest of the internet... Is good until CIPSA is passed...
Edit - reported for mod review... Its btr we discuss phones and not our freedom on xda
This place has rules and its best to follow them

u noob are u craze
do u want to destroy the form i don’t agree
OP, yes Freedom of the Internet is just that, free to speak but with any organized sense of freedom there are rules to help govern or else it would be randomness/uselessness.
Regarding XDA, as with any forum there are Forum Rules and when Members violate them....then action is required. Maintaining a Forum of this size of Members is a task, but remember this is a Development Site, not a social site.
And as you seem to think your freedom is taken way with the maintenance that is required on the threads, keep in mind again the sole purpose of this site is for Development.
To OP - in short, I agree.
I've opened threads or discussed things which were deleted. Some mods I've communicated with were reasonable and fair but many were not. Communicating with some of them by PM, some were very angry, aggressive, unreasonable etc. I tell you, my nieces and nephews who are young seem calm and resonable by comparisson. Also, I'm quite sure a lot of 'support' goes on behind the scenes. Post number and thanks meter are currencies here, they go far beyond 'showing appreciation' etc. 'Might is right' that's the attitude of a bully or a dictator, not an authority . So, it's 'open' and 'democratic' only up to a point - where it suits particular people. The policies for complaining were equally a joke, in my experience. After that, I decided to keep my posts strickly related to my 'mod' interests and never get side-tracked again. When these people make you angry, remember to let it go, this is not the real world.
ok... i had four android devices: Defy, Xperia Sola, Nexus 7 and Razr I, still have three of this (sola, Razr I and Nexus 7).... Only in this forum i have seen this kind of constriction of users... i could give some examples: In Defy Android Development Forum, cm10 port for Defy, made by Quarx (maybe someone know him, he was the winner of the December contest for devs), there is a enormous flood of noobish post (how to install, stupid questions about fc's, stupid thanks posts, etc.) despite three or four threads in general sections for reporting bugs and other stuff correlated, but Quarx did deleted or close thread? No! Because he only focus in what really matter: Development. He ignores everything else. So, maybe, some devs could learn about this behaviour. And what mods tells about it? sometimes, they made a soft cleanup of useless post...that's all... Sometimes Closing thread doesn't help at all to the community.... I think mods maybe could take a more practical and polite position...

I never saw any 'useful' thread being closed by our mods in this sub forum....
Cm10 thread was closed twice..reason because of spam..only posts such as thanks and great... Yippy... Etc etc
I reported the thread twice to b cleaned
There is a great inflow of members.. Every day 100 of noobs are added and merely few developers...
Useless posts really makes it difficult to find actually useful info..
When I was new here I did created a thread which was closed and I did pm'ed a moderator abt it
Bt now I understand I was wrong... U just cant let this place be cluttered wid useless threads and posts

Btw ho do u expect me to find something useful in a thread wid 100 pages and 1000 posts...
U never knw what are u 'exactly' searching for... Upto the level of thread search performs good ... Within a thread and specifically for finding something useful... Its a pain
Dont u think it is necessary to prevent unnecessary posts and threads? Closing a useless or a mirror thread is necessary
Once people realise there Is no one to check/control... The place would go garbage

Only if members of this forums were more kind and helpful to everyone we could avoid a lot of questions and together we could make more easy the job for the mods. That's something that i miss of Defy Development forum: The sense of real community, in fact, the little knowing about android modding and dev, i have learned in there. Me too! I always have that problem, you try as best as you can.
I recently went to the discussion thread of the unofficial Sola Jelly Bean port. The discussion thread is now also closed. I contacted a mod to ask for information. There was no information in the thread! Next, we will be banned from discussing the discussion of the deleted thread...
dev should ignore newbies because its not the fault of all of us. we dont deserve to lose the scope of JB. and when i had my defy i only knew 1 god for my mobile.. Quarx.. he made things which were not possible without him. i though sola's god was better than him. but he is pissed off by few noobs.

Mods arent that hard...and never will be
How many of us have received any official warning?? None of us I guess bcoz we were smart enough to refrain ourselves from posting non sense... Bt not all have that sense...
We need to understand what mods do is best for the forum... We may be relatively new here bt not the mods.. Some have been here since the website was started... Some although 2-3 yrs old on website spends a lot of time here keeping the place clean n organized.
Unless u do something wrong u wont b caught...
Here at xda we are given several official warnings (sometimes just our post /thread deleted or locked n no warning) before being taken down by a mod...
Ok, good. This is discussion already...
I see people with yes and people with no policy but only because some n00b members don't know how to use this forum (don't forget that there is a lot of amount of young people here - under 15 probably) and they probably don't know how things are going here. If this is a BIG problem for forum moderators (huge amount of new members) I suggest to lift boundaries on "when someone can post something" - think about it... it would be less thanks posts and "yipee"-es.
Please continue...
Here are my thoughts:
I still don't understand why we're still whining about munjeni's lost. Yeah, it's painful and disappointing but guys, we should carry on. Since he has given permission to use his work from the "JB PORT Discussion thread" (can't give the link because the mods deleted it), we can start from what he has left. I don't know why's that the JB thread of thunder is still closed. I know nothing compares to munjeni in terms of developing but we still have great devs here and I still have faith in them. Not just because munjeni has left, the development on JB will stop. I know it's a painful lost but we can't do anything about it anymore, we can just learn from it so that we will not lose another dev again. Come on guys....seriously.
Move on and what? If you think people are whining perhaps you can't understand their motivations. I can understand at least two reasons:
1. As the OP says, there are questions of freedom of expression. An example of this which I mentioned was the thread closing (without information) of the discussion thread of those of using the unoffical Jelly Bean port which, is a bit excessive. This is a ROM on my phone now (and many, many other's) and we simply can't discuss it now. Next, we will be banned from discussing the thread closure of the disucssion on deleted ROM. That's when you know it's North Korea - you can't discuss anything. I think these concerns are valid, even if some don't.
2. You need to learn something when things go wrong, or they will repeat themselves. Simply 'moving on' guarentees a repeat of the same experience. That's why people are discussing it.
But I want to know, why munjeni left us.?

well... Moderators deletes and close thread or comments its normal, its what they do.... they must have valid reason to take actions.
good thing, they are still human and not AI. if they are not here... we'll ended up something like demonoid. people will start posting what ever they want, links to paid apps that they rip or mod. Others will have hard time catching up with roms since everyone starts to copy each other work and claim its theirs....
in short... i dont agree freedom of internet in XDA

A Friendly Reminder From The Mods Regarding Newcomers and Threads in OT

Hello Everybody,
We would like to remind everyone in this forum that even though this is the off topic section and we like to have fun and joke around, that the forum rules still apply here. As of late there has been a lot of "trolling" of new members, or newcomers to OT, and especially new threads posted here in the off topic section. This is something that needs to stop. Here at XDA we are an open forum and any member is more than welcome to post where they choose to (assuming of course that they aren't spamming up a dev thread with questions etc etc). As with any forum if you see a thread that needs to be closed use the report button. Also, as with any other forum unless you have something to contribute to the topic of the thread in a friendly way please do not post in that thread. As cliche as this sounds it remains true. "If you have nothing nice to say it is wise to say nothing at all."
What may seem as a harmless joke to you may come off as rude or offensive to a member that doesn't know you or understand the fact that you mean what you say as joke and nothing more. If you want to "troll" stick to joking around with your friends that way no one mis-interprets your posts as an attack on them personally. Members of XDA deserve to have peace of mind when posting in OT and at the moment they do not have that luxury. Violators of this rule will be considered spamming and your posts will be deleted without any prior notice. Repeat offenders will be dealt with according to XDA rules.
To give you some recent examples of why were are saying this please look at the threads linked below
[Q] Chair Type
The Longest Sentence
How Do You Shave Your Legs
iOS7 Discussion
Girls on Xda
The last one was by far the worst!
I know this seems like we may be picking on you but please understand this is not the case. This is the type of behavior we expect from each and every member on XDA no matter the forum. To all members who do choose to violate this rule, if we have to, the moderation team will hand down official warnings and infractions or even bans if necessary. Remember this is the last thing we want to do. We only want anyone and everyone that wants to join in on the fun of the Off Topic section to get their chance to do so without feeling like they are not welcomed in the section. Here at XDA we are all one big family so lets act like it.
So lets sum this up for everyone. These are not suggestions but these are the rules here on XDA!!!
No more "IBTL" posts.... instead please use the report button. That is what it is for
No more "GTFO NOOB" posts... if you ignore them they will leave you in peace.
This is a public forum and therefore all threads are public too. You may not decide who can post in a given thread, if you want a private members club start a social group.
No more spamming/trolling new threads! Only post if you have something to contribute to the topic. Anyone who wants a chance at having a thread in OT deserves a chance to have one of their own and its not up to you all to decide what stays and what goes :highfive:
Cheers Mates :victory:

Ahh Alright... BTW why isn't this thread locked ?
EDIT While you guys are here, could you basically define Off Topic? I mean, we have something completely off topic and that's in no way related to XDA and there is some "off topic" that somewhat related, like tech stuff. Currently there is a bit of confusion over this that brings a lot "spam" over here.

Because there are undoubtedly going to be some questions about this and a little discussion (serious discussion mind you) goes a long way.
This is all really silly.
I actually saw the iOS7 thread from your link and wow, I would've loved to just discuss the operating system without anyone saying "Apple sucks Android 5ever hahahaha if you think iOS is worth talking about you're wrong omg!"
Because while I like to be silly (and poke fun at apple) at the appropriate times, I also like to have deep and meaningful conversations about electronics and whatnot without having a fanboy come up and start a pointless argument.
and some people (no one in specific) need to cut their... stuff they're doing with the "Inb4 lock" and whatnot. It doesn't add to the conversation, it doesn't help the OP if the OP is asking a question, and it basically does nothing productive. If you think a thread should be locked/is spam, report it and move on.

Anything not related to the devices or development for them. This however is not the appropriate time for a "what is OT?" discussion or "My (insert device here) off topic thread relates to the device and should be moved back to that forum" discussion.
This is about making sure that the off topic forum is accessible to all without being needlessly trolled or made to feel in any way unwelcome.

Certainly excellent points. It's gotten a little out of hand lately. Admittedly the amount of new users who can't bloody read has also gotten out of hand. (Which makes me wonder, isn't it possible to simply disable the posting permissions for <10 posts users in OT (and General)? That way they can still read, just not post. Would save us all a lot of time, irritation and trouble, not to mention the mods a lot of work of both deleting the posts and keeping everyone else from trolling.)
The problem is that most people seem to be somewhat confused as to the difference between 'fun' and 'trolling'. And there's also a difference between clever/funny trolling (which even the mods do from time to time), and outright offensive trolling so obvious even my sociopathic brain finds it pathetic...
You can be clever without being a total arse. (Yes, I know, being nice isn't my speciality either.) Nobody said we can't have fun. But bullying the new kids is exactly the behavior we all hated to have directed towards us in school.
But the Girls on XDA thread wasn't that bad before it was moved to off topic. After the move there were more deleted posts than remaining posts xD

With regards to the 10 post rule, I'd like to make this clear as it seems that it really isn't. There is no rule stating that you can't get your first 10 posts in the Off-topic forum. There's obviously a rule about spamming, and that applies here as well. So, someone posting "Hi" 10 times in the "Say Hi" thread is spamming, but someone posting in there to say hello and then engaging in conversation in other threads is not. I really don't know why there's such a beef about new people posting in OT, other than people misunderstanding the request made a while back to not spam.

Now that's out in public I shall rest
And with regards to the girls' thread, it's that exact type of thread that we're trying to help here, hence it being mentioned in the first post. Sometimes trolling is funny, yeah, but sometimes it's just disrespectful, and that's what I personally dislike seeing.
**** just got real, Offtopic just got more serious. This is like moving from the Attitude era to the PG13 era :silly:
Just want to throw my tuppence in this here hat.
I agree with most of what has been said in the op and other comments. @ShadowLea comment about people not reading is true enough, as moderators how many times have you locked a thread someone has opened to post a video, or a picture etc? Only for them to open yet another thread to say 'WTF'? Ok so a lot of us plow in and spam the thread, this is done because most of the time an existing thread that has been going for a long time is only a couple of lines away. It's our way of reminding people that just because this is ot doesn't mean the search button was left at the door.
People with less than ten posts do get a raw deal in ot i admit, since I've been registered with xda the the ten posts issue has always been present as an understanding that users try to make 10 useful posts. People that make their all of their first ten posts inside of ot cannot be deemed to have made 10 useful posts. Ten posts isn't hard, even if it's in the form of a question. The answers to a simple question can be useful for someone with the same issue, using search.
A lot of the more respected and older OT regulars come here to chat with like minded people away from the constant barrage of pm's and questions from new users in their device threads, i actually have a lot of respect for quite a few people in here for maintaining as much calm as they do. Recently I've noticed that there has been a lot of posts that even by my "low" standards has gone way over what is acceptable, this really does have to stop. Users here are getting younger and younger, we tend to forget this because all we see is the avatar and words on a screen.
Imma gonna stop there as even i feel that im waffling about this again ( :thumbup take what points you want from the above, it's just my opinions nothing more.

I haven't thought that far too be honest, i read the posts and just started waffling which generally means i have more than a passing interest in saying what I'm thinking.

Some of my first 10 posts were probably in Off Topic, and they probably weren't all useful. But they never consisted of simply "Lol" or "I agree" or "Hi!" or "Hahaha". Or worse, as @jugg1es says, threads about 'see this picture' or 'look at this video'. Especially when the destined thread for it is on the bloody first page!.
Those are the issue. If someone makes a decent contribution, they're not doing anything wrong, and they don't get trolled. (much.).
It's not the best solution, and I doubt it's even good idea, but this is exactly why many forums have an age minimum. (I believe we have some seriously good developers that are under 15, though. They are the exceptions that prove the rule.)
It doesn't matter how many rules or threads about rules we have. Fact is that only about 2% of new users actually reads the rules, even if you wave it in their faces. Hell, even if you made it a "must scroll to the end to select yes" thing some EULA's have, they'd still just scroll and ignore it.
The only people who really know the rules are those of us who point them out to the people that break them.
I couldn't agree more with a lot of the points being raised here. Even though I haven't been a regular in this forum for a while now, the issue which this thread refers to was an issue then and probably ever since the Off-Topic forum was even created. As I haven't been around here recently, I can't really say whether this issue has gotten worse recently (although I guess it must've done to require a thread such as this to be needed) but, as we're all aware, most of the time it hasn't really been a bad thing and has simply been a bit of harmless trolling.
The point ShadowLea made above about people not reading the rules is, again, something we're all more than aware of and blindingly obvious that it's the main reason why any ideas such as this, however good they look "on paper", will only do so much. The only true solution, that I can think of, would be changes to the actual sign up process.
I haven't really got the ideas on such changes or even if they'd be made but I see it as the only way to stop such problems from manifesting like they have.
