Im having what i think it is a case of battery drain, even with my phone in standby (Data on, WIFI off) according to current widget its using about 100mA (or more!!!) all the time, current widget is not good for the Vivid?? Because on my previous HTC phones (HD2 and Inspire 4G) the readings were 10mA or less!!! Its like im using the phone even when it is on stand by, is this is normal?? my phone just goes through the battery even when im not using it , to be clear, values in current widget are high, but they do match the battery usage im getting though.
Just installed this Kernel to see if it helps, but its still the same

What kind of apps do you have running? Also cw didn't work right for me either when I tried it said the same about 100 even though I didn't have that bad of battery drain
I would suggest flashing a new Rom ...wcx illuminati has a excellent stock Rom that has kickass battery life

download RUU from HTC site.. had the same problem and that fixed it
Thanks for the replies guys, im going to try flashing the ROM directly from HTC site and post the results.
Downloaded the RUU from HTC but i got an error trying yo upgrade, on the bootloader screen says:
RUU
Security fail!
Update Fail!
Any ideas? the phone has the bootloader unlocked S-ON, i got the phone used, but this means i could flash a ROM through recovery/hboot??

You have to relock the bootloader to pass the security check to install the RUU. Check the superguide.
Check your logcat output and see if you are getting a chunk of log about thermald.
If you do, you can drastically improve your battery life by renaming /system/bin/thremald to /system/bin/thermald_backup (or anything else, just as long as the fine is named different so the system can't start it).
This change DRASTICALLY improved my battery life.
I jumped to a custom ROM after the RUU fiasco, installed this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721270
Same condition, while using the phone the usage seems to be within reasonable numbers peaking at 500mA or less, still high, just not that high, standby is still using too much, 99% of the time above 100mA, like i said before, this phone should report a number around 10mA like my old Inspire 4G??
@ess.boyer: Where is logcat located so i can check it?? i have a file named thermald_dis under system, is this file the one to be renamed?? do i need to reboot it after the change?
EDIT: Found it, installed a tool to view the logcat, but no thermald reported, i will change the name of the file/reboot to see if it helps a bit and report back.

Did it work .? Try either wcxs Rom or holics Rom their great on battery life.. its also posibble you have a faulty battery

Ok. so iam on darkys rom 9.3, used wipe and ever since my battery life has been bad since.
Take today for example,i pulled my phone off charge at 7isham listend to music for about 45mins, had possibly 3 hours of sporadic internet usage 3g/hsdpa, always turning off the 3g after usage. At about 130pm i had to switch to my 2nd battery.
this is a typical day for me, so its preeeety frustrating.
anyone have any ideas why or similar experiance and can share some wisdom?
cheers!
The first time you use the phone after a flash, the battery will be bad. A couple things to note:
Did you flash with 100% battery? A lot of people say this is necessary.
Did you calibrate it yet? When you do a new flash, use the phone until it is dead. Charge it without turning it on. When the battery is 100%, go into recovery and wipe the battery stats. Then use the phone again until it dies. After that normal charging patterns.
Some people say that they get better battery life with certain kernels, and whether or not you have lagfixes. I use speedmod and I'm getting great battery life.
Check all of these and see if anything helps.
Try this thread as it has a lot of helpful tips.

Clue your rom if you did not have battery drain before .
jje
First think: have you installed any programs that need constant internet connection, like skype or facebook? To check whether this is a possibility check battery history, when cell standby is absurdly high even though the screen was on some time it's a good indicator something is constantly downloading (That only works if you used your phone since unplug, I have 72% for cell standby because I never turned the screen on since I charged it: )
If you ruled that out check whether your modem is appropriate for your region.
After that you should wait and let the phone run down to very low percentage or even let it turn off itself. I don't believe in wiping the battery stats, the battery will calibrate itself with every charging cycle. just let it drop under 10-20% and then charge fully. That helps me.
If the drain does not get better after 2-3days fully charge your phone and reflash the rom with the kernel
I've got the exact same problem with my girlfriends SGS. I got her this phone because it is a bit smaller and lighter than my desire HD, and it supposedly has better battery life....but at the moment I'm not seeing it.
Her phone seems to go at 30-80mAh at sleep, whereas mine will be under 5. She doesn't have any apps that I don't, and I can't figure what is causing the drain based on the running apps.

How do you know if the modem is appropriate for your region? I've been dying to find that answer, searched several places but no luck. How do you pick a modem. I have an international GT-I9000 but live in north america.

On the first link there was a tip to make wifi sleep when the screens off, I did this an noticed a major change in my standby(screen off) battery life, it dropped 1% in like 6 hours rather than like nearly 10% Nisha, which I was noticing before.

so yeah,,, i got a nexus one from a friend of mine (whos done alot of flashing and installing custom roms on this phone so i dont really know whats running) but it drains about 10-15% battery every hour or so.
ne suggestions on how i can figure out if its a bad rom or a bad battery??
thanks
Easiest way to know if it's the ROM is to flash a new one. I suggest cyanogen mod it is some what simple but works well and battery is just fine. There is plenty of documentation on the forum to show you how to flash but if you still can't get it just ask and I can walk you through it. You may also want to check settings -> about phone -> battery use to see what uses up the most of your battery.
you could try calibrating the battery
so ive ran some tests, basically fully charge one time without simcard and another time with, to see if the radio drains more battery. and both times its about the same.
i did order a few batteries off ebay, but probably will be like two weeks or so before they come in.
mmmm the md5 stuff kinda confuses me haha, dont know how that stuff works
You don't always need to check md5 you can if you want but most people don't just make a nandroid backup and that way if the file is corrupted you just flash it back and your good. But if you do want to check them just download ManD5 and check to see if the one on the file matches the one on the website.
Under >Settings >About Phone >Battery >Battery Use
What are the top 5 applications and what %?
Wifi should be set to never sleep. under >Settings >Wireless >Advanced >Wifi Sleep Policy
Find out which ROM and radio are being used. Cyanogenmod7.x or OxygenROM would be good for battery life.
You should also try charging the phone to 100% and then wiping battery stats.
Does your phone get warm when charging?
Having swapped ROMs back and forth, wiping everything, I get the same bad battery life (-10%/30 minutes). Wife's N1 runs fine, ours ran the same stock OTA versions until this. I needed to see if it was something related to the OS and tried some alternatives.
Replaced battery - no difference (wiped stats, etc)
Turned off data (wifi and non).
I can't tell when the radio was updated on mine - if it was related to an update that would correlate to the problem, but I have the latest radio that has been out a while.
Logcat looks just fine. It's not data related, nothing seems to be going on when charging...
My hands are cold, using the N1 as a hand warmer right now (it's plugged in)...
There's a bug with CM's kernels causing a LOT of battery drain when you set the wifi sleep policy to anything but "never sleep", check that and change it in case it's not. I know it sounds counter-intituive, but it really works.
I set mine to "never sleep" and easily last a full day on a charge. I also calibrated my battery using the battery calibration app, and using a plain black background helps somewhat if your N1 is AMOLED
Heys Guys Im having an issue with my Captivate, its was working fine for the past week. It started giving me problems like battery temps too high, cant charge, had to charge it manually, removing battery & charging it all night. All this happened when im with stock rom latest with leaked 2.3.5
& i did unlock this with changing the 01 digit to 00 in efs file.
From the past 2 days im trying to install CM10,9, 10.1..... after installation it shuts down itself. Not able to use it.
Is there any way around to make this work. If pics are needed i can provide that too.
Thanks

When/how does it happen?
What are the changes/mods you made?
Did you restore anything?
Did you try different kernel settings?
Did you try flashing a different kernel (like Semaphore?) or flashing a different ROM?
I could be asking more questions but really, I dunno what causes it, I can only guess. Also a search in the CM10.1 thread might give you an answer to your SoD <-- Should've been your first step*

Battery temp to high is a big problem. Did you overcloak? Have you running bunch of stuff at the same time?
When it shuts down, does it reboot by itself or you have to do it manually?
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Sounds like Battery health status does not equal healthy. That forces an immediate shutdown, whether due to temperature or excessive internal resistance. That's because once a Li ion battery reaches critical temperature, it combusts and destroys your phone, burns you and anything around it, etc.
GET ANOTHER BATTERY ASAP.
Stop trying to circumvent high temperature shut down.

Recently i bought a new battery, original samsung make, it states the same thing "charging paused for battery durability" sometimes "Charging stopped battery temps high". No overclocking here, just used to call, receive & wifi hotspot. Currently i charge battery in a battery charger & use it in phone.
U pointed out something right, sometimes screen just goes blank, i have to manually switch it on.

I think it's not CM related but hardware related. Does this happen when not using the wifi hotspot too?
I'm thinking your battery is bad (even if new), charger is bad, connection is bad (maybe from water/humidity) or that your usb port is bad. No easy way of finding it other than testing.

May be yes, the phone some times just goes blank, i have to manually switch ON. The same battery works well in my frnds phone quite well.
Port dont know, i can copy files no errors even now when i plug it in on stock gingerbread the battery doesnt charge but can copy files as before.
Since the batt works well in other phone, a couple of ideas. Perhaps silly to ask, but just checking:
did you wipe battery stats in cwm after flashing?
did you clean the phone's battery terminals with a bit of alcohol?
what's the battery health, temperature and voltage history look like, if you can get it. you can log it with battery monitor widget or similar app. set to short 1 minute interval for testing.

Has anyone else had this problem? since upgrading to a 4.3 sense based rom (tried 3 different roms), my battery life has become horrible..i can barely get 2 hours of screen on time whereas i used to get 4+ on 4.2.2 roms.
i know alot of people have said that 4.3 improves battery, but it hasnt for me, its done the opposite.
also has anyone noticed strange heating up of the device? for example in asphalt 8 the device thats slightly hot and then cools down while playing. but in games like candy crush or zynga poker the device continuously gets hotter and hotter..
tips/fixes/stories anyone?
Mine has been really good. Like, 3-4 hours screen time good. When I'm on wifi (N only, G wifi drains a lot) my battery percent just flatlines on the graph until I pick up the phone again. Sounds like a rogue app since I don't have this issue. I run ARHD 20.1.

I'm running arhd 20.1 aswell. And I would LOVE to see that happen again, my battery drains around 10% overnight, and I'm a really late sleeper, so that means in 5 hours it's lost 10% on standby..and it's weird cause WiFi shuts off after about two hours,so I know that's not causing the problem.
App usage shows android system as the app using the most battery. When I check in the morning it shows android system and kernel to be the top two users.
Could it be a radio problem? I've seen a decrease in signal since ive upgraded to the 4A.17 radio from firmware 2.24.
I'm thinking about flashing the minsense Rom or even a ge rom and see if that helps the problem.
It doesn't seem to be a rogue app cause I actually have less apps then I did on 4.2.2, and none that are new..

I'm still running the current T-Mobile firmware, not 3.x. (I'm still S-ON with hboot 1.44) Thought that was worth noting.
Have you tried putting the phone on WCDMA/GSM auto instead? If your LTE signal is weak (or any kind of signal is weak in general) I see this phone's battery life usually take a nose dive. It has so far from my testing saved me a ton of battery to switch the phone manually into GSM only when I'm inside a building at work to get more bars, then switch back to LTE auto when I leave. Try leaving it on overnight on different radio settings, and with and without wifi. It could be a cell radio drain. And btw get GSAM battery monitor, the stock stats don't seem right to me. Android System being high in the HTC battery stats tells you nothing really from what I'm seeing so far.

the funny thing is i dont have data, since i get wifi wherever i am. i also think its a radio problem though, my gsm signal never seems to be full, and people constantly tell me on the phone that they cant hear me. so what im doing (right now) is flashing a ge rom, specifically sinless rom, then im going to flash the new ge radio, 4A.18, and see how that plays out, prolly going to flash a 4.3 kernel aswell so i can uc to 162mhz or whatever the value is.
i seriously believe its the radio+lack of kernel on 4.3 sense roms that are causing this problem for me. so once this is all done ill test it for the rest of the day and see how it goes. thanks so much for your help

If you don't use any apps, of course system uses the most.
You need to check for wakelocks. If you have unexpected battery drain, it's likely that the phone is not sleeping properly, i.e., being kept awake. Betterbatterystats, gsam, wakelock detector etc.
What was the change in signal attenuation, or are you just saying the the display bars are different?

i use apps, just nothing new compared to when i was on 4.2.2.
and no wakelocks according to gsam, i lost 20% overnight (7 hours)
i dont get what it is. i upgraded the radio to 4.19 now, but for the signal issues, it included lower bars, bad audio in calls, and random loss of wifi.
i removed basically every app, besides some essentials like facebook, whatsapp, and a few others.
i tried switching to an ge rom, but i just cant stay on it for too long, vanilla android is so plain compared to sense.
so the last thing i can think of, is a rom known for its battery life. not asking for a comparison, just your opinion in which rom gives the best battery on 4.3. any suggestions?

Charge your phone up all the way, put it in airplane mode, and unplug it for an hour then don't touch it. Then post your battery percentage. If it isn't still 100 or 99 then you have a more severe problem that actually relates to the battery itself.

Show us a graph of your signal strength from GSAM, and show us a screenshot with how many bars you have. At least you know now that the battery is definitely not shot. It is probably mobile data related...hmm did you ever try letting the phone sit with mobile data disabled as well? It should drain almost as minimally as airplane mode.

So wait, your signal is really good but your phone drains like crazy, and while you're on WiFi? Okay, what wifi router are you using and is it G or N and is it dual band?

its absurd i know..its already down to 93% with 9 minutes screen on..
and its a dual band router, im normally connected to the 2.4ghz band, and its with wireless ac, which the one supports. Which is weird cause i thought ac improved battery life..
edit: im an idiot, wireless ac only works on 5ghz bands, but that still doesnt explain the drain on wireless n..as my previous router was also wireless n

Have you tried 5 ghz N by forcing the router or your phone to operate only at N speed? I use a TP-Link dual band N router and I remember seeing s drain of about 4 percent overnight for 8 hours of full idle with full sync.
I have tried with both 2.4ghz n and 5.2ghz ac, same problem persists
Awake is 3x screen on, I don't think that's normal, somethings keeping the phone awake much longer
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app

so ive done a bunch of other tests, and i can confirm its wifi thats causing this massive drain, not wakelocks, not roms, or anything else.
when the phone is left with wifi on, but not being connected to any network, battery drain is minimal overnight.
its the same on both 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands, so it this a router problem? if so, do you know any tips that could fix it?
Do you have "Best wifi performance" checked? That seems to eat battery.

i have no option for best wifi performance, just "wifi optimization". i found the problem, it has something to do with my new router and its bad compatibility with android devices. the phone seems to be awake 2x the screen on time and the main culprit is "wlan_rx_wake" wakelock
Hey guys
I already posted my problem in the thread related to LineageOS, but since the issue couldn't be solved I want to try it this way.
So what is my problem?
While using my phone it gets very hot. According to Powerful Monitor the CPU gets up to 65 °C and battery up to 35 °C, while under load. Besides this my battery goes down rapidly. So watching 10 minutes of YouTube sucks up 8-9 % battery. Just a plain normal video.
What is my setup?
I9295, running LineageOS 14.1-2017-06-06-UNOFFICIAL-jactivelte, OpenGApps 06-07-17 nano, only apps installed manually are GeekBench, Powerful Monitor and YouTube. Baseband is I9295XXUDOB4 (German unbranded DBT). I bought a new original Samsung battery and currently using it. So it's basically stock LineageOS.
What have I already tried?
- flashed stock firmware (all available for Germany that are unbranded). With and without erasing NAND, with different Odin versions. Last time I flashed I used Odin 3.07
- different batteries: the old ones the phone came with (bought it used), the new one I bought separately, a new one from PowerCell with higher capacity (2900 mAh)
- different phones. I have a second I9295 from a friend, that worked definitely without any issues. Same problem.
- different custom ROMs: now I'm running LineageOS, but I also tried CM13 (20161228), CM12.1, MIUI and Super WizCyan (everything from xda)
Is it possible break something ciritcal when disassembling the phone? Both phones came with broken covers for the USB port, so I opened it, but only removed the screws and the mid-frame (?) and replaced the cover. Nothing was damaged, at least I was very carefully and didn't see anything that looked suspicious.
Another very strange thing I noticed:
If I use the phone a lot (lets say 30 minutes, so almost 25 % battery!) and after that the phone is not in use for an hour or so, the battery goes up for up to 7-8 %. How it that possible?
I really have no idea what else to do.
Any help is appreciated.

Hey there. Well, there are tons of possible reasons why your phone acts like that. My modest opinion is that you have some sort of wakelock active in background. Install both Wakelock Detector and Gsam Battery Monitor, grant all the permissions and let it obtain data for some minutes. Than look at the results, and check if there's any Wakelock active. If instead Gsam shows an excessive consume by the kernel, try in terminal the following commands:
Code:
su
setenforce 1
setenforce 0
Then see if there's still the drain (you have to wait some minutes).
If it still doesn't work, I'd advice you to update to the latest stock firmware (doesn't matter which Country, just select a non-branded one), reinstall LOS again and verify if with nothing installed you still get the battery drain.
Anyway, IMHO it's not an hardware related problem, even messing up with the components this shouldn't happen. The only hardware fault could be the battery short-life, but 1st you said you just replaced it, 2nd it would not justify the thermal overload. Let us know
Thank you very much for your answer. I'm quite short on time next days but maybe I have a few minutes on sunday.
On the matter latest stock firmware: already tried that on monday, still too much battery drain, but I didn't install LOS till now. Maybe sunday.
But still thank you
Finally I found some time to try your suggestions
I skipped the part of trying it on the old setup, so I flashed everything new with latest stock(UDOB4-DBT, not the last one but still Android 5.0.1), then TWRP 3.1.0, after that LOS 14.1-20170606 and OpenGApps 7.1 nano from 17-06-06. Only apps I installed beside that are GSam Battery and Wakelock Detector. Root activated and granted where asked and needed.
Here I uploaded the pictures I took from GSam Battery.
So what seems strange to me:
- why is Phone Radio used at all? I don't have a SIM card inserted...?! It's on a very high level, even if the screen isn't on.
- The battery gets hot quite fast. If it's not in use, everything is fine. But as soon as I use the phone it gets hot.
- As you said: kernel usage seems quite high, tried to install "Terminal Emulator" and executed the commands - no difference.
According wakelock: where do I check that?

Sorry for the delay, but if you do not quote/reply me I cannot see the message cause I'm not extremely active on XDA. Anyway...
- Phone Radio is used even without SIM, at least in TouchWiz, dunno in LOS, but it looks like so. The only way to disable it is Airplane Mode.
- It gets hot due to kernel usage, what I still do not understand is why it does so.
- Those commands where the only commands I think could be useful in this case (they set SELinux Permissive/Enforcing)
But if you say you get the Drain on TouchWiz too, the problem is serious and there's a (little?) chanche it would be HW related.

No need to apologise, you're doing this in your free time...
Besides that, I wasn't at home all week, so I couldn't try anything even if you had answered.
So, how do I get the kernel to calm down and stop draining my battery? I mean, I didn't install anything besides clean LOS and GApps. So what could lead to so much kernel usage? Are there any further information that could help you?

I didn't read this post before, the points are two:
- No need to write Thanks, there's a button for it. It's free and very grateful
- If it drains even on stock it's a serious problem.

The situation is very weird. Let's analyze.
1) TW/LOS doesn't matter. Battery drain in both
2) No apps installed which could cause wakelocks
3) Battery SHOULDN'T be the problem
4) The drain is recognised as kernel "usage", though it couldn't be real 'cause of point 1
5) Neither Permissive nor Enforcing SELinux mods helped
At this point it doesn't look so much a SW problem, but more an HW one. About:

Well, sometimes the discharge happens so fast the battery doesn't calculate the remaining capacity so well, and after some minutes the real charged cells are more than the "estimated" ones. It would explain the "goes up" of the percentage, but still not the drain.
It's very strange and very rare, but there's an infinitesimal possibility that the thermal paste went to the hell. And in this case there's not that much to do.
That's pretty pessimist though. I'd advice you to format everything, reinstall the latest stock TW and stick with it, and if it still doesn't work, try with some apps like Greenify and ForceDoze (this one works just with 6.0+) in order to at least TRY to reduce the drain.
I'm sorry I cannot help you more, if anyone has some suggestion, please let us know.

Next strange thing is, I have two S4 Active devices, both have the same problems. Am I just unlucky enough to get two broken phones?
Still, the device I got from I friend was ok the moment he gave it to me. He said battery lasted for only one day, but that would be ok. So it has to be something I did with the phone.
Youre are not alone. My Phone was/is also getting hot.
Then I did a full wipe ( format also internal memory partition!)
I'm current running cm13 (CM13 (20161228)). Batterie works now / normal ok / 1 / 2 Day s ( no great usage ). But when i telephone with someone it's getting hot in 15 min. Modem Version is I2995XXUDPB3.

Have you flashed any custom ROM? Try downloading an entire stock firmware for your country / carrier from sammobile and flash through odin 3.09 and check. The S4 active generally gets hot on usage but should not get very hot. You can also try using powersave mode that limits cpu max freq and prevents heating. Battery on normal usage shoukd last for little under a day to a day with normal usage unless you are using data (otherwise set mobile networks to GSM only which saves battery and reduces heat)

Normally i have seen issues flashing through odin 3.10 and prefer 3.07 or 3.09. If the firmware flashed correctly and you do not have any issues then it should be fine.
CPU temp of 65% without powersave mode is fine and watching youtube videos does consume battery. Try a different charger / cable combination as that too can have issues. If the battery gets charged quickly (on stock kernel under 2 - 2.5 hours from 0 to 100) then there is definitely an issue with the charger and it will drain quickly too.

I tried 3.10, 3.12 and 3.07 so far. Not successfully. Tried 3.09 now, we'll see.
I have a Sony Xperia Z1C as comparison, YouTube needs maybe 1% for 5 Minutes.
Cables/Chargers shouldn't be the problem. I have the original Samsung, also cable. Charged to 0 to 75 % in 90 Minutes. Same with cable and charger from Anker. So should be fine?
So no new ideas?

I have no idea too but i have the same Trouble with mine BUT I'm still using the original Rom and didn't flash it. So maybe it is an Hardware issue.
My Battery is getting old, yes, but it is the third one. The Phone gets hotter than in its first years.
I hope you'll find a reason!
My i9295 always has been like this: 1 minute on-screen time = 1% battery loss. So this basically is a 2 hour phone... Stock or custom rom didn't matter. A friends i9505 used a lot less power, therefore I assume that the LCD (instead of the S4's AMOLED) is the problem.
