Hi guys
Im using custom ROMS from this portal. I would like to ask if it is necessary to have antivirus isntalled on my phone "SE Xperia X8" if i only install apps from Play Store and I dont download any files like movies, mp3 etc. on my phone.
I know its good when you have a such thing but when it isnt necessary....
So I would like to ask your suggestions, you know much more like me if you create some ROMs and kernels and many more.
Thanks a lot guys

who will make phone virus LOL
@OP - I use AVG, it's not a ram eater or battery drainer as those above say.. (funny they say that when they don't use it)
It's very naive of those above to think that Android cannot get viruses.. It can and has many, even in the PlayStore.
Remember that all roms here are rooted which means they have NO security.
An AntiVirus is a must to protect your data.
Anyone can put an app in the PlayStore - we've all seen some of the cr*p available there.. The code is not verified by Google like in the Apple AppStore so viruses and data theft is easy to accomplish for those who write bogus apps.
The choice is yours ultimately but I'd never run Android without AVG..
Good luck!

In one way youre right. But if I choose apps like facebook, twitter ... from lets say " good and trusted developers " which are use by milions of people, so i think that should be clean because many people already have it. If they were defective, they were be removed long time ago

Well, Im not sure.. I know that on iOS were some holes in safari which alowed jailbreaking, but also those security holes could be also used for other things, like getting some data from device. Maybe there are also similar things in Android

CtrlAlt does have some points. Mainly, it's really better safe than sorry.

I found that just now. And i don't know what to make of it, honestly (no idea if it's reliable). It's the internet.
I don't have any av installed on my phone, although i do have Avast on my sdcard so i can install it when i have to.
So my take on this is we don't need av FOR NOW. but it's good to be safe. Be careful when on the net specially if you dl stuff. Have an av ready just in case. Hope that helps.

Assuming that such a ridiculous thing even existed (there are scams on the market that claim to be antivirus programs -- they're NOT), it WOULD.

While I agree with lbcoder, the "MICROSHAFT" comment was unhelpful and unnecessary. Ever heard of/used an anti-virus product on a WinMo phone? Nope. Me either.
And for the record... Linux and OSX have viruses as well.
Don't worry about a virus on your Android phone.

i've heard of at least one, but i can't remember the name of it.
a job i was doing some years ago saw the boss and myself using imate jasjams (HTC TyTN?).
my boss managed to locate an antivirus app for the phone and installed it.
no idea how well it worked. i didn't bother with it.
Symantec had/has one for WinMo. I used it for a while. But it was more of a gimmick than anything else. Never seen a virus or a positive scan.
I would say because of the nature of Android we shouldnt see much in terms of viruses, however the system leaves much too control to trojans imho.
read bout this new app from droidsecurity called virusfree, meant to be good. They also offer a phone tracking service so you can remote wipe the memory if it's lost or stolen, that sounds pretty handy as I've previously had a phone stolen and it's a pain to change passwords etc

lollllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll.
wouldn't virsus be possible if they do manage to get root access? I know a few of the customized ROMs require no notification for applications to gain root status. I am sure with root, an application can some how manage to do some damage. rm -r /sdcard anyone?

Me and this Android online market (https://market.android.com/) website don't like each other...
There is a problem with this website's security certificate.
The security certificate presented by this website was issued for a different website's address.
Security certificate problems may indicate an attempt to fool you or intercept any data you send to the server.
We recommend that you close this webpage and do not continue to this website.
Now call me a tight arse security freak but seems to me that a company the size of google could sign their certificates correctly.
Guess me and this online market will never be doing business.
For those of you like me that cant stand that the check box for non market apps is completely gone in 4.1.83 and apparently Atrix did not make the Today OTA fix from ATT this is a quick how to to correct this over-site
#Need SQLite Editor from market & Root
1. Open SQLite Editor
2. Scroll down to Settings Storage (com.motorola.android.providers.settings)
3. Click settings.db
4. Click Settings
5. Scroll to _ID 107 "force_only_market_apps"
6. Press hold and select option change value
7. change value to 0
8. Save
9. Enjoy
Umm the non market application check box is there for me? what are you talking about
don't know what to say to that , mine was not there in the menu at all ever sense the latest update... either way it is still another way to enable non market apps from anywhere with out using a separate program
please search before posting, this was already posted and for a few weeks has been included in gladenabler.

Yea, I posted this a while back in a couple of the other sideloading treads as another option. The only thing I think you need to add to your OP is that you need to be rooted to do it.
It's not a bad idea to have a separate tread for this, but maybe it should be in the themes and apps tread since it is really just an app? (maybe that is just me)
And this is a VERY easy way to enable it.

Hay thanks and @Gr8Danes sorry for the redundancy than , despite popular thought i did search first and only saw the manual way listed (SQLite on mac or linux and using adb) ... must have missed it, anyhow i just posted this because if your like me and working on your phone than you probably wipe and re-flash on an almost daily basis, this has than screwed me because i was than out and about and went to install something i needed from sd card and it was locked, so .. this was how i enabled it from the road... its never been a huge secret just a matter of looking any how like i said its here and if it helps you like it did me GREAT if not suck it up because currently XDA only has a Thank You button and doesn't support the "I already Knew that Dummy" button

Hay, no problem man, it was buried in the tread, so that's why I thought that it wasn't a bad idea for a tread for it alone. Besides, it happens to even us that search and search for stuff in treads, and still can't find what we were looking for, but we gave it a valiant effort.

So, anyone afraid of dropbox now, lol.
http://jdsawyer.net/2011/07/02/put-it-in-the-cloud-are-you-nuts/
For the average user they can't cause any harm for storing music files or videos to have access to them elsewhere. So no reason for me to stop using it.
I sense lawsuits from somebody.
To add some facts to that: Dropbox already modified these changes, clearifying that those are legal terms they need to technically operate their service.
Read the lower part of this post: thinq.co.uk/2011/7/3/dropbox-terms-service-target-your-stuff/
A Dropbox spokesman:
Some of you have written us with very understandable concerns about the legal-sounding parts. In particular, our new TOS talks about the licenses we need to run Dropbox. We want to be 100% clear that you own what you put in your Dropbox. We don’t own your stuff. And the license you give us is really limited. It only allows us to provide the service to you. Nothing else

However, users should be alarmed.
Yeah, came across this at bleeding cool. Com, from a Greg Rucka twitter (comic book writer), thought there would be some interest here. The main point someone was putting forth is that we are not the customers with dropbox/Facebook etc, we are the Product/Merchandise ...

Shady! I haven't trusted (or used) Facebook for many months now. If you investigate their history it's more than a little sketchy. They don't want your information ... 'just because'.
It's really not that shady; it's just a bunch of legal jargon stemming from outdated laws they have to put into the agreement to protect themselves when storing millions of people's personal file's. Nothing will come of this, because there's no way a lawsuit will be able to get anything out of them

I know its kinda backward, but depending on the size of stuff just email it to yourself. With the size of hotmail and gmail these days a few gigs worth of attachments might just be ok. And if there 'stories', ie your a writer IIRC you've just copyrighted your work by mailing it to yourself (someone might want to clairify or correct that statement, just a thought bouncing around in my poor brain, lol).

Try Moves.. It pretty accurate.
I think best one is runtastic pedometer. It is brilliant and you can adjust the sensitivity of the steps. And by the way, it has to run constantly in background if you want all your steps to be counted, and yes, it has to drain your battery. Otherwise it is not possible to count all the steps. But if sometimes you don't want the app to count your steps, you can easily greenify it, and when you need it you can degreenify it.
An alternative

I would suggest try a bunch of them off Mobogenie, you can even find the regular apps that would charge you for free! That way you can try a couple of good ones without having to pay a single cent and switch the one you prefer best. Honestly it's a great store and PC client for anything else you might need as well, so I highly recommend it. Good luck otherwise!

If you are please refrain cause anything about Pirating is against the rules of XDA. You don't want to get banned. And apps are usually very low price.
