Does anyone use any?
Would anyone recommend any?
Is it needed?
Does it impact performance?
If anyone has any views any of the above they would be gratefully received.

Not only is it not needed, it couldn't possibly do anything since it wouldn't have any access to anything it would need to scan.

Assuming that such a ridiculous thing even existed (there are scams on the market that claim to be antivirus programs -- they're NOT), it WOULD.
This is NOT MICROSHAFT. Forget everything you know about viruses.

While I agree with lbcoder, the "MICROSHAFT" comment was unhelpful and unnecessary. Ever heard of/used an anti-virus product on a WinMo phone? Nope. Me either.
And for the record... Linux and OSX have viruses as well.
Don't worry about a virus on your Android phone.

i've heard of at least one, but i can't remember the name of it.
a job i was doing some years ago saw the boss and myself using imate jasjams (HTC TyTN?).
my boss managed to locate an antivirus app for the phone and installed it.
no idea how well it worked. i didn't bother with it.

Symantec had/has one for WinMo. I used it for a while. But it was more of a gimmick than anything else. Never seen a virus or a positive scan.
I would say because of the nature of Android we shouldnt see much in terms of viruses, however the system leaves much too control to trojans imho.

read bout this new app from droidsecurity called virusfree, meant to be good. They also offer a phone tracking service so you can remote wipe the memory if it's lost or stolen, that sounds pretty handy as I've previously had a phone stolen and it's a pain to change passwords etc

You clearly don't understand the difference in the system architecture when compared to that BS that most people commonly use because thats what their computer came with. I'm not going to bother trying to explain it to you since you clearly are not receptive to knowledge.

Briggs, looks like you hit a nerve there, why don't you go and educate yourself young man

lollllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll.

wouldn't virsus be possible if they do manage to get root access? I know a few of the customized ROMs require no notification for applications to gain root status. I am sure with root, an application can some how manage to do some damage. rm -r /sdcard anyone?

Website Thoughts

Well I have a domain and unlimited space because my e-friend owns a lot of communites and etc so he gave me a box a while ago and I use to run a site off of it but I got bored and lost interest so it died but I want to make something out of it again.
The domain is efrigid.info I don't really know what to make, or what to base the community on I would do phone customization or something along the lines of that but there is already so many communities out for stuff like that.
So please tell me your ideas or suggestions thanks.

lol that was a suggestion, may be even a guide on how to flash different mobiles collected from the thousands of posts here.
You dont want to do something everyone is already doing because then you would have very little traffic. So you want something original to attract large volumes of ppl.

p2p software like limewire for andriod?

p2p software like limewire for andriod? is this possible i think it is just not avaliable is anyone working on this ? or willing too ?
well theres a photoshop mobile for most phone so who knows if there will be a mobile limewire or ares
i dont see why it wouldnt be possible especially with 3g, but it would probably violate some sort of data service contract agreement that tmobile gives you
its been done on iphone already and windows mobile theres pleanty of software p2p but just not for android iam sure someone will make it soon but i think it will not appear on the andriod market place and t-mobile wont care they just enjoy getting there money every month
Call me stupid, what would you use limewire on a phone, for?

There is andtorrent that lets you download torrents
1 - Gnutella sucks
2 - No reason except the obvious to use this, Gnutella isnt a means of legal distribution, BitTorrent can and is actually used for a legal means, fairly often too.
3 - there already are BT clients for android, but AFAIK, none are very good, check out ABTC on the Market.

Super one click put a virus on my computer

I didn't think you guys were in the business of distributing malware/viruses, virus scanner picked this thing apart and blocked it. IT hates me now, thanks.
You have an over active program that gave you a false positive. I have no troubles on my computer using Super One Click.

Been using Odin 1 Click for months now. Never did it ever say it was a virus or whatever.
I have Norton 360.
If u r on ur work system, chances are that it could get flagged since its an EXE (be it inside zip). Most office systems do so, even if its a legitimate app unless its recognized by ur office security tool.

That is a common thing really. It even happened with the WM version to flash my old HTC. It is not a virus.
super one click distributes and uses either the psneuter or rageagainstthecage exploits to gain root. They may be showing up in virus scan definitions by now since they have been around for a bit..
also your office may just identify anything that is a script and not signed by MS as virus or some such... I'd chalk it up to an aggressive corporate policy.
There is no problem with one-click. You are the problem, my friend

Rageagainstthecage flagged as a virus with kaspersky for me. But the reason was BC it was a script that could change files. But it was no virus.

So, wait. Is rageagainstthecage harmful, or is it what is done after that exploit that is harmful. I'm referring to this article discussing the viruses found in the Android Marketplace.

RATC is not in itself harmful. What the "droid dream" app did after gaining root was harmful.
Here is an analogy.
think of the rage..cage as a handgun there are responsible people who choose to own them and use them conscientiously to protect their home or whatnot and there are others that will take that same handgun and and do much harm...
super one click is the good kind and "droid dream" is the bad kind...
BAHAHAHA!!!!! As an IT guy, Christine makes me chuckle. Like a lot!!! Thanks for that!
And then, there's Christine's IT guy. It's sad actually. All it would've taken is one question. "What do you use this program for?"
No need to repeat what everyone else said regarding safety.

Dropbox Suspicions? Anyone?

So, anyone afraid of dropbox now, lol.
http://jdsawyer.net/2011/07/02/put-it-in-the-cloud-are-you-nuts/
For the average user they can't cause any harm for storing music files or videos to have access to them elsewhere. So no reason for me to stop using it.
I sense lawsuits from somebody.
To add some facts to that: Dropbox already modified these changes, clearifying that those are legal terms they need to technically operate their service.
Read the lower part of this post: thinq.co.uk/2011/7/3/dropbox-terms-service-target-your-stuff/
A Dropbox spokesman:
Some of you have written us with very understandable concerns about the legal-sounding parts. In particular, our new TOS talks about the licenses we need to run Dropbox. We want to be 100% clear that you own what you put in your Dropbox. We don’t own your stuff. And the license you give us is really limited. It only allows us to provide the service to you. Nothing else

However, users should be alarmed.
Yeah, came across this at bleeding cool. Com, from a Greg Rucka twitter (comic book writer), thought there would be some interest here. The main point someone was putting forth is that we are not the customers with dropbox/Facebook etc, we are the Product/Merchandise ...

Shady! I haven't trusted (or used) Facebook for many months now. If you investigate their history it's more than a little sketchy. They don't want your information ... 'just because'.
It's really not that shady; it's just a bunch of legal jargon stemming from outdated laws they have to put into the agreement to protect themselves when storing millions of people's personal file's. Nothing will come of this, because there's no way a lawsuit will be able to get anything out of them

I know its kinda backward, but depending on the size of stuff just email it to yourself. With the size of hotmail and gmail these days a few gigs worth of attachments might just be ok. And if there 'stories', ie your a writer IIRC you've just copyrighted your work by mailing it to yourself (someone might want to clairify or correct that statement, just a thought bouncing around in my poor brain, lol).

Hi guys
Im using custom ROMS from this portal. I would like to ask if it is necessary to have antivirus isntalled on my phone "SE Xperia X8" if i only install apps from Play Store and I dont download any files like movies, mp3 etc. on my phone.
I know its good when you have a such thing but when it isnt necessary....
So I would like to ask your suggestions, you know much more like me if you create some ROMs and kernels and many more.

who will make phone virus LOL
@OP - I use AVG, it's not a ram eater or battery drainer as those above say.. (funny they say that when they don't use it)
It's very naive of those above to think that Android cannot get viruses.. It can and has many, even in the PlayStore.
Remember that all roms here are rooted which means they have NO security.
An AntiVirus is a must to protect your data.
Anyone can put an app in the PlayStore - we've all seen some of the cr*p available there.. The code is not verified by Google like in the Apple AppStore so viruses and data theft is easy to accomplish for those who write bogus apps.
The choice is yours ultimately but I'd never run Android without AVG..
Good luck!

CtrlAlt does have some points. Mainly, it's really better safe than sorry.

I found that just now. And i don't know what to make of it, honestly (no idea if it's reliable). It's the internet.
I don't have any av installed on my phone, although i do have Avast on my sdcard so i can install it when i have to.
So my take on this is we don't need av FOR NOW. but it's good to be safe. Be careful when on the net specially if you dl stuff. Have an av ready just in case. Hope that helps.
