I'm having performance issues with GPS under Jelly Bean roms. Most recently Helly Bean. My GPS will lock then loss connection 5-10 seconds later. I will periodically lock again, but only keep the connection for a short time (10-20 sec). I had no issues under ICS roms. Any ideas?
I've been reading up on this and am getting conflicting information. Some people say the modem controls the GPS performance. Others say modem doesn't matter and it's all about the /system/etc/gps.conf file. Which is it really or is it somewhere in between?
Have you tried flashing this GPS Fix:

It worked wonders for my cappy.

It is conflicting yes but all is a little correct. If you're using the same modem on JB as you were on ICS then its probably your config files that the ROMs install. However if your modem has been changed during a flash then it could be your modem causing problems as well.
I will say modem definitely matters. I've flashed a modem that caused me to get absolutely no GPS signal. Then I flashed a different one on the same ROM and had 8-10 sats in less than 10 seconds

No help there. Locks more often but still loses signal a few seconds later.

I have tried every single GPS fix out there on this forum but my GPS is still not working... inside a building GPS test says that there is no satellite in view.... outside I see about 6 and locks to about 3 or 4....
(But it takes like 5min to lock)...
Is there something wrong with my phone? And btw I'm running cognition rom and I'm rooted.(if this has anything to do with it...

Try the Darky port that uses Da_G's fix. Best GPS experience I've had so far with this phone and the only thing that has realistically improved performance.

my best gps performance has come from two roms
Chronus and Doc's newest rom.
Did you change any supl settings?
For me the supl.google.com settings never worked as well as leaving it @ www.spirent-lcs.com
build = 1007.
I have had great gps since i switched to assonance, latest version of axura worked for me as well, you may want to give them a try, or try their gps settings and modem over cognition.
If that doesn't work you may want to scratch/erase the white contacts of the cover as one post said to maybe increase its signal.
I would return it..you should be able to lock faster than 5 mins and see more than 6 satellites
I agree with fldude... my first one wouldn't see anything. My second one works as well as anyone's. Exchange it.
I really can't return it cause I didn't buy this phone....
So I'm gonna try all the roms... thanks for the info guys

Most of the newer ROM's have GPS fixes built into them
I'm running Assonance's latest build and although it's not perfect - I usually get 8-10 sats in under 15 seconds to lock-on.
I just started using the latest assonance and it has great gps thanks.

i agree mostly that that using the google server didn't help me at all and the roms you mention are quite good. but i have the bug where the daemon crashes on chronus, but cronus has the ability to lock very very fast on my phone, i have had great luck with captivate builds in general. da_g's files fix the daemon crashing mostly but are not considered a fix. there is still an underlying issue that causes eratic behavior in certain situation. da_g has yet to pin it down but it may be an interference issue.
OP you may have a poor contact at the antenna, some vibrant users were cleaning the contacts for the antenna, there are many antennas and im not sure which is for gps.
also you may want to try with/without backplate, and clean the contacts on that. some users have posted numbers showing marginally better signal without the backplate.
also i have yet to do real testing but anecdotally the old jm9 libraries seem to behave less badly. it still jumps the position around in some situations but it just seems like it jumps less, i will do a mytracks comparison soon. but for the issue the op is having it seems to me that i get faster locks with the newer files, particularly from jj4.
lastly the modem has a great effect on the gps signal. for ability to lock jl3 seems the fastest. but to be honest i think the phone didnt jump the position around as much on jj4 or ji6 which give up hsupa and should be used with the a captivate rom. jk3 and jk4 were also good maybe better with the position jumping thing than jl3.
EDIT: one last thing is to try the gps restore app. i know it says it only resets lbs test mode settings but it also clears "something" that has helped with a bug causing the daemon to crash on my phone(it doesnt crash on every phone like it did on mine) the only other thing that i tried that was able to "fix" that bug was to do a factory reset. clearing gps data never helped. so the error seems to be in data somewhere but is not cleared when you clear gps data in lbs test mode. the samsung app also did not restore my lbs settings to factory so the ad may be mis-informed. i think of it as a easier way to clear gps data which at times yeilds better result, it is not a fix. your experience may vary.
Has the GPS issue been fixed with the Custom ROMS such as
Darky's... How long does it take to get a fix?
Depends upon your phone its GPS settings modem used etc . Custom means custom not GPS fix .
Kitchin rom JPY modem apns settings to local server and i find no problem with my GPS .

You can take a look at Cypher_X's post about gps
To my knowledge the modem and the kernel are important to the gps performance, the ROM not at all. experiment for yourself.
I'm on a kitchen ROM with speedmod and it works without any issues
Have a look at gpsaids in the market. Works for me.

I am trying different ROMS (Insanity, Darky's, stock Gingerbread) and everything seems to be ok. Fix in less than 15 seconds!
Hope this helps.
Bye
edit: and GMaps navigation too.
Define fixed? What are you planning to do with it?
Do you want fast locks, high enough accuracy when driving, good sensitivity, or do you want it to be as accurate (if not more ) than fitness devices?
Anyone from Australia using latest CM7? I'm having really hard time getting GPS to work... tried pretty much every modem out there but no luck.. GPS Aids didn't help either... even if I got a GPS lock, it gets lost once I started to move
Thanks in advance

GPS works fine for me. I'm on nightly 104 with the JV1 modem. I also used Faster Fix to adjust the pool to Oceania. Even without the pool fix I had lock from cold in about 17 seconds. With the fix it's about 12 seconds while indoors.
I should add that I'm on the Optus network.

I'm not from Australia but some of the nightlies give me problems with GPS as well. I think that GPS performance has to do with the kernel as well. I found on nightly 88, my GPS was on par with stock. 89, 90, etc. gave me problems with GPS losing the lock. Now I'm on 104 and GPS seems to be better again...
I'm currently using the KG3 modem (with 850 band), with #104 and stock kernel.
Hey sup everybody !
I have tryed all of the JB roms out there, but they all seem to have poor wifi quality
can any one confirm ?
thx
Sane here.
I'm not sure exactly what causes this but according to my phone I definitively get worse wifi through JB then ICS and GB.
From what I've picked up the way the phone picks up WIFI has little or nothing to do with the ROM you have installed. Perhaps since JB is more recent and used on the phones with higher specification the wifi picked up on our S's is the same as before but measures differently through JB?
not agree with you .Please flash Nexus Radio KF1 zip file from CWM or reflash cm7 JW4,JW1 radio files.

You won't trouble any wifi issues if you flash JB ROM with full wipe and full format.Wifi signal bars show same levels just like in GB or ICS .

"specification" nor modem has anything to do with wifi strength
Same here, better WiFi signal strenght on ICS, MIUI GB than JB (doesn't matter stock or CM10). Tried all JB roms from xda, same problem.
Agree!
I don´t know... Maybe Radio files have to do something with that?
How can I find out which one I should flash?
I tried wifix and wifix manager , but nothing changed, this problem is so annoying I guess I'll get back to ICS or GB until they fix it

Modems/radio files have nothing to do with wifi...they are separated modules.
The wifi module is in the kernel. The right modems just give you better signal, with better signal, comes better battery, and i think it has something to do with the gps, but i`m not sure in what percentage.
WiFi was not working at all, Then something happened, Maybe I removed name and added it again that's what made it work, Not sure.
any hard evidence? show some transfer rates compares to ics.
maybe signal strength is not displayed correctly in jb?
bcos i dont notice any speed decrease on wifi since ics

WiFi seems the same as ICS for me. I have enabled the PM Fast setting in the kernel and also turned off the Avoid Poor Connections setting in the advanced wifi settings
Secure wifi
I am using Galaxy S(I9000) with JRO03H 4.1.1 ROM and ZSJPG modem and Devil 3_1.0.4 kernel. when I am trying to connect to a secured wifi it throws authentication error. ( I know nothing wrong with my user id and password as the same works on other device.) please suggest if this has to do with modem or kernel and is there any way to fix this.

i second/third this .. i have a worse wifi signal in jb .. tried a couple of roms .
i am saying this based on the fact that i frequently use my phone in one room of my house and i always got 2 bars.... with jb its never more than 1 bar .. and to proove that its just not a reporting case .. i get frequent disconnects with jb which never happened with ics .. so there .. confirmed ...
This is a feature of JB that was added to prevent connection intermittently dropping due to a weak WiFi signal.
If you want the old behaviour go to WiFi settings, options -> advanced and untick "avoid poor connections"
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Is really the signal weaker, or it is only a matter of scale?

Hi all,
I'm always losing cellular signal when using CM 7 or 10 roms.
And I will not be aware of the problem until I try to make calls, then the signal indicator will turn to an "X". Which means I could be missing incoming calls.
It doesn't matter which baseband I use. This problem always occur as soon as on the same day I install the rom.
I don't have this problem however as long as I'm using stock roms (30A, 20S, 20Q, etc), even if the rom is from other regions.
I'm from Singapore and having the signal problem on M1 and Starhub. Would really like to use CM roms and appreciate if any one can help.
Thank you.

Use SU1120 BB
OK. I have flashed my BB to the SU1120 as suggested. Will monitor from here.
Thanks.
Update: With Temasek's Kang, the phone has been working well for the first 36 hours since flashing. However, i have been having signal lost a few times already today but the signal always manage to come back after some times.
So I guess SU1120 is better than all other BB that I've tried, though signal lost still happens. Looks like I have to stick to the stock rom with stock kernal.
Those in Singapore, what BB are you using with CM7 / CM10? Do you encounter signal lost?
