Hello all,
I just bought an Optimus 2X here in my country and i am wanting to flash a new ROM, but i am having some questions that perhaps you guys can help me solve.
In my previous phones, all i needed to do to flash any custom ROM was to download it, enter recovery mode and flash it without worrying about anything, but with the Optimus 2X i am a little confused.
I read this post and i have some idea of what the baseband and IRL are. I understand that i just cant download ANY baseband for my phone, it needs to be a matching one with the current one installed on my phone (preferably).
But what about the ROMs? If i flash a new ROM, for example MokeeOS, will this affect my baseband and IRL or those two will remain untoched, so i can just flash any rom i want?
My phone came with Stock GingerBread 2.3.4
Baseband is 1035.21_20110725
Kernel 2.6.32.9
LGE Version es LG-P990-V20f
thanks for the help
You need to root your phone first...then flash recovery cwm....then select the custom ROM and stock our custom kernel...
base band never changes with a flash of custom ROM.....it is only flashed bysmart flash method.
I would recommend you to read a few threads and posts from the developers section....use search....you will find lots of info
Hope it helps you mate
O2X with Magical ROM and supersonic kernels from my buddies
thanks my friend. So i'll just go ahead and flash a new rom and give it a try.
i was worried that maybe some custom ROMs were specifically designed for some basebands and IRL, so, if i installed them, they BB woul dbe changed and probably i would loose 3g, or some other features related to the BB.
thanks again for the info!
Baseband never changes with flashing of Custom ROMs. No matter how many ROMs you flash the baseband remains the same until you change the baseband manually.
But the RIL gets changed with ROM. So you need to check if the RIL that came with your new Custom ROM matches with your baseband or not everytime after flashing a Custom ROM.
You can check this using an app called GetRIL from Play Store. It will check if the Baseband & RIL on your phone match or not and will give you an option to download and install a matching RIL.
Click "Thanks" if this helped you...
thanks, that was really helpful. So, all i have to do now is find a ROM, install it on my phone and get the matching IRL. Quite easy.
thanks for the info!
Yes... Happy Flashing..

I am new to Galaxy S but have had experience with roms, kernels and radios from a G1.
I started with Samsung 2.2 firmware and rooted it using Cyanogenmod wiki page and flashed the latest MIUI. I know kernels change speed and include Voodoo colours and sound for Galaxy S. I also now radios can change signal and gps accuracy.
1)Are modems the same as radios and if so where do I find a list of them?
2)What is the best bootloader and why does the Gingerbread one not have sd cards work? Also what else doesn't work?
3)How can I check which radio I have and if I flash any bootloaders how do I check that?
Radio, Modem and Baseband are all the same thing. You can check which one you have by going to Settings >About Phone and checking the Baseband Version.
A new modem is easy to flash as a zip file from Recovery and you can find lots of them by searching in the Dev forum, however make sure you flash a modem that is for CM7 since you have Miui installed. For guidence you can search for Modem in the Miui or CM7 thread in the Dev forum.
As for bootloader, there is no way to check which you have, but as you installed Miui directly over 2.2 you should have the froyo bootloaders. CM7 and Miui were designed for froyo bootloaders. Some people say that GB bootloaders have better battery life but if you have GB bootloaders with CM7 you can't access you external SD card and other things may not work properly. I would suggest staying with froyo loaders for now and seeing how it goes.

I have read this:

but I don't know if it still JPP is the best radio as this was back in December. For people in the UK what would be the best overall radio?
can anyone answer me which is the best CM7 modem for ORANGE ROMANIA? tks
Try jvp or jpy, I'm on orange uk, insanity cm and they both work fine for me don't forget you need cm7 modem, there are 2 threads in dev for this

About bootloaders
I have a SGS GT-I9000, and following
directions from ROM kitchen, I installed a Froyo 2.2.1 version.
It's I9000XXJPY with 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #22 kernel
and it says Rom kitchen v11.1-ZSJPK.
I wanted to install a Gingerbread version from ROM kitchen as well, but it says I have to make sure I have at least JVH bootloaders. Ummm, do I ? And what to do so i could install a gingerbread to my SGS ?
I installed a 2.2.1 froyo also from ROM kitchen I9000XXJVO with 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #22, build number XWJSD, hoping i'll install newer bootloaders with it.
But, i had problems with messaging so i'm gonna have to revert to previous one.
Do i have proper bootloaders or not and what could happen if i tried to install Gingerbread and don't have proper bootloaders.
Thanks in advance
Just a few quick questions please.
a) Will there be any problems installing a rom which isnt created for the firmware? Example if Im on 2.3.5 and I installed a Rom which is made for 2.3.6, will there be any issues?
b) I understand that most roms comes with its own kernels, so if Im installing a Rom which has a KKA kernel and my phone is on a KJ4, do I need to install a KKA kernel 1st before installing the rom?
thanks
1) Always, on any phone, when you want to install a ROM with different basement than yours, needed full wipe before.
2) never instal a kernel before ROM.First the ROM, after the kernel.all kernel threads in op, you can see if its compatible with your rom filmware version.

Sorry for the bump but I need little explanation on both of these questions though I have Galaxy SII. I think I don't need to make any other thread asking same questions.
Thanks.
I make sure I do a full wipe every time I flash a different ROM.
This is not the case for ROM updates. I only full wipe when the update tutorials says I need to.
And as said before, make sure you flash the ROM first THEN the kernel.
In the case of the G-Note, both AbyssNote and FM kernels are compatible with CF-Root custom kernel.
Hmm.. then is there anyway to backup your stock ROM without root OR you have to first root the device, back it up and then flash another ROM?
Yes, you can backup the stock ROM after rooting the device and installing CWM.

Aye Aye Captain!
Hi,
First of all I have to say I'm really a noob in flashing etc, but I'm trying to learn
I am interested in flashing the horsepower kernel.
I read in the Hp thread that it is only compatible with V20 l/j/g/i/c/e.
I check on my phone and I have V20m...
Is that going to be an issue ? I'm not interested in flashing a custom rom, I just want the extra performance So I'd rather keep the stock rom
And I also have a few questions about the kernel itself. Are there any downsides (apps that won't work, ...)? If ICS is released for the P990, can I just update or do I have to flash the original stock kernel back ? I also read of people that had troubles with baseband, is that something that is kernelrelated of romrelated ?
thx
Just flash the kernel and see what happens
If it doesnt work, restore your backup you made in recovery before you flashed
I've seen people complain that they can't play games like PES2012 with certain kernels.
I think when ICS comes out you can update regardless of what kernel you are using. From my understanding when you flash a rom you overwrite kernel and BB, so if you want a different kernel and BB you have to change that after you flash a rom, but you'll have to confirm this, I'm not sure this is accurate.

The ROMs which have Kernel built in....but then you can also use custom kernels which are used to optimize the performance of the device...and ROM flashing does not overwrite any BB....but yes...you have to flash through Smartflash method for changing a BB. Changing a BB will wipe the data for sure....but then after the flashing ROM you also need to change the RIL accordingly....
If you have the wrong baseband, can't you just flash the baseband that worked on the stock rom ?

According to Sreeprajay flashing a kernel will not change your BB, so you will keep stock BB.

you are right....else i would just flash a kernel for the ROM and jump to different BB for different ROMs....unfortunately it does not..... ;(
testing ROMs will become an exciting game...just a few mins

Hi guys, just bought an O2X yesterday and I want to be sure of the steps on how to take my Froyo to CM7 or any other GB for that matter, so here's what I think it should be done:
1.- Root the phone (seems Gingerbreak works on this phone with froyo?)
2.- Install CWM (Can install from ROM manager unless I wanna be able to flash from internal memory in which case I should install the modded vesion?)
3.-Change baseband?? (this is my biggest concern, I'm on 1035.21)
4.- Flash rom + gapps if needed
Please guys if you can confirm my thoughts on all the 4 steps it'd be much appreciated
_BONUS QUESTION_
Is the hdmi and camera working completely or is the stock froyo better on those aspects, as I don't see a thread for official CM7 I'm guessing I should just download from download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=p990 ?
Thanks again.

You are almost right there m friend.
There is an unofficial CM7 thread out there by Temasek and MisjudgedTwat....it is more than what you can ever see.For CM7 ROMs, choose Kernels by Temasek or by MisjudgedTwat or by Vadonka.
If you are looking at Stock based ROMs, then go for DjangoManouche1.3 beta16. Stock based ROMs + HP or Gueste Kernels.
for the Baseband, you have to come out with the full version number ...what you have mentioned is not complete.Try V20Q for the BB with V10 series RIL...Normally, CM7 comes with a RIL which is enough. Install GetRIL app from the play store and you can change RIL if it is not compatible. For the Stock based ROMs, you can flash the V20Q Base band + v20Q RIL(both are 725 stuff)

Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer. Now the baseband thing got me a little confused, if I go for official CM7 which will come with a RIL I'd have to install a matching baseband. Can I do that afterwards or do I have to change the baseband first?. I remember with my O1 I flashed a rom and got no service because I was on wrong bb, and flashing the bb fixed it. I just wanna be sure it's fixeable if I mess up
btw.

Look at this thread...it has all the BB related things. You can flash the BB which is V20Q which is the latest for O2X (your choice as it is the service provider, region, device and so on)and this is the best as you will see in the thread which has a poll. you can then flash the ROM with the three wipes...dalvik,user data and cache.Dont forget to backup your apps and data with Titanium Backup pro or any other app.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1658047
you can then use the GetRIL app to choose your RIL...which is normally with the ROM.Best way would be flash the BB and then flash the ROM(to save time). Flashing the BB will wipe the complete data. Take a backup through CWM before.even if ou have an issues with wifi, mobile data 3G, dont worry to choose the correct RIL and reboot.
if you have any issues, wipe the three wipes and reflash the ROM.normally, you wont have any issues....just do it...
I am only trying to help...dont blame me for bricking ur phone...follow instructions and we all have a great device...YOU WILL TOO

Thanks again man, I've a better idea now. I'll keep using my phone with stock rom for a week to have something to compare to and then go crazy trying roms
I know everything I do with my phone is my full responsibility so no worries there.
Thanks!
hi
here is my version:
-Galaxy S GT-i9000
-2.3.6 XXJW4
-some 2.6.35.7 kernel
my question is can i flash this kerner to one of those below?
mngb0.5.6
Devil 0.08
Glitch 13.1
SpeedMod Gingerbread
Semaphore 2.7.4
and which one do u prefer for speed and performance?
sorry for my english
Semaphore is standard in a lot of GB Roms
Speedmod would be my preference.. but why?
Are you having issues with it?
You are on JW4 2.3.6 - JW9 is out

i'm new to this there, just want to try some new kernels, see which fits me ye and this one is a bit slow.
is it so simple?just flashe over the existing kernel "stock"?
yes im on jw4 2.3.6.i thought jw4 is for europe so i downloaded it.can i flash jw9 over this one or do a fresh one?
are there any improvements in jw9.
thnx for reply
got my sgs on december 2012 and this was my first flash ever :/ so like i told i have no experience with this for now, but its not so hard.
I am a fan of GB roms, easier to mod :silly:
Phone slow as in how?
It all depends on what you use the phone for as there are roms out there for multitasking, games, overall use etc...
Im on GB Saurom JW9.. Its stable and well balanced (my preference, I am in the UK)
Or the MesoRom, there are many.....depending on your needs
Flashing a kernel can cause issues, a lot of people have crashed there phones cause they flashed the wrong ones
Read up or PM the developer of the Rom to see whats suited to your phone and other peoples posts.
Flashing another Rom :
If its a GB rom that you want to flash then its JVU First, then Root JVU then Flash your Rom that your wanting to use.
SEE HERE
Let me know if you need more help

thnx for reply i will try that link u gave me tonight.
the gt uses too much RAM and its a bit laggy.i dont use it so much but i like it smooth.on AnTuTu Benchmark i had 3777 score and on Quadrant can remember but i think it was 17xx.
i have like one or two games on it and some apps that i use every day.got rid of some system apps, was experimenting little and i was suprized.had like 190-200 free RAM always.but when i instaled google play it droped like hell 100-140.
after flashing with JVU i can flash any rom i like?4.2.1 JB???
in this curret 2.3.6 i dont have recovey mode.couldnt fix it .tryed 100 times, all possibilities.
i want this ROM to install on my sgs
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2041928
so can i flash it after JVU???
Yes just follow my Walkthrough and you can install any Rom you wish : HERE
Also If you like my themed rom of JW9 Saurom Thats HERE if you wish that i am using with no lags etc...
Do not flash GB from JB. You need to install ICS first, even for 5 minutes..
Flashing from GB directly to JB will likely lose your IMEI number and that will, depending on your country, leave your phone unable to call, text etc lol
If you know how to restore efs then you can miss out ICS without problem.
