Hi all.
I hope someone here can help me with some answers or at least help me testing.
My problem is, that when I use my phone when running, the training session isn't registered correctly. It always log my routes between 25 and 30 % shorter then they are.
I've tried using different programs like Runkeeper, Endomondo, Cardiotrainer, My Tracks, and others.
They all show the same short route log.
I've tested all the programs with my old HTC Desire, and here the error is always less then 5%
Anyone else seeing the same problem??
Maybe someone could test it on their phone the next time they're going for a run??
My guess is, that there might be some bug in the software of the phone, that makes it report to short distances between every point that it sends to te training software. (maybe something to do with the accuracy of the GPS, and how this is offset is calculated into the positiondata??)
Anybody got a good Idea where to start??

Same here, tried a couple of the running apps. Sometimes it helps to restart the phone before running. Google navigation and offline nav apps (Sygic, TomTom, Navigon) seem to show more accurate GPS data. Speed related?

Well, now that most of us have the Fuze GPS working, one thing that would nice is a little app/service that wakes the GPS up several times a day and attempts to get a fix.
Rather than waiting until I need to use the GPS, then turning it on and waiting for a fix, it would be great if it had at least connected sometime during the day.
Thoughts?

I think the software you are looking for is called QuickGPS. If the satellite position information does not expire your device should get a fix within under 10 seconds, so there is no need for any additional software. Just use QuickGPS so that the satellite positions are always up to date and that's it.

I think this is what you are looking for.

I think he means more so after a soft / hard reset it can sometimes take several minutes to get a full fix even after running quickGPS.
I have had it take 4 - 5 minutes even after running quickGPS. It started with one satellite and slowly grabbed 1 every 20 - 30 seconds until it had about 7 then it got full lock. Once that was done reacquiring a lock took no time at all.
I wonder if it goes to "sleep" or something as a power saving feature?
That's all well and good if you are in the same spot as you were when QuickGPS ran last. However, my problem with many GPS systems is that I don't use them often enough to maintain a sync.
What would be ideal is if GPS would stay on all the time and/or there was enough battery to keep GPS on all the time.
If you use your GPS to drive to your dentist, for instance, then drive to work without your GPS because you know the way, then need GPS to meet friends for dinner, your GPS cache is based on your dentist, not work.
What I'm asking for is an app that kicks off GPS (presumably) while you are at work. If this happens multiple times a day, it shouldn't take much battery life, but your data would always be up to date.
Alternately, is there an easy way to just run QuickGPS multiple times a day?
Moved to software.
Try Beeline GPS or Visual GPS.

I use it for the same job.
I find myself frustrated when I need the GPS fuction on my Tilt, but then it takes 2-3 minutes to locate me from a cold start. That can feel like hours when I am late and lost. When it is warm, the GPS fixes in 5-20 seconds.
It seems a program that keeps the GPS in a state of warmness (maybe starting up and getting a fix every hour or two) would really help me out. I don't have a pocket full of batteries, so leaving the GPS on all the time is not an option.
Is there something like this out there, or do I have to try to build it myself?
Thanks for any help,
Will

I've been thinking of the same thing...
2 things you can do:
1) use network location when possible. It really is better on batteries and much quicker.
2) Use a program like tasker that flips on GPS for an alotted time to get a fix every so often. I'm thinking about using a multiple profile setting that will automatically run a GPS fix when I leave my work or home networks. But it would also run once every hour when I'm away from those networks and only when I'm away.
So i know there are tons of posts about this, but none have worked for me :/ However i seemed to find a super easy fix that worked for me!
1. you need to get into LbsTestMode which you can do by getting "Any Cut" in the marketplace.
2. With Any Cut go into "Activities" and make a shortcut to LbsTestMode.
3. Choose Delete GPS Data
3.Then go to "SUPL/CP Settings"
4. Enter These Settings:
Code:
Server: h-slp.mnc410.mcc310.pub.3gppnetwork.org
Server Port: 7275
SUPL Secure Socket: ON
AGPS Mode: SUPL
5. Now go outside and do a Get Position Test, you should get a lock quickly!
And there you go!
Tested On:
Stock AT&T Captivate Eclair ROM
Leaked AT&T Captivate FroYo ROM
Getting a lock usually isn't the problem. It's keeping the lock while moving.

I'll 2nd that. Position locks aren't that useful to me if I try and use the phone to navigate somewhere.

I don't know about that..when you have to get into a navigation mode, it helps to get a lock in a timely fashion.
On another note: what supl server is that? I would want some more info on it before putting it into my settings

You don't know about that? I know about that. You can get the quickest lock inside or outside, but the main issue is the accuracy while driving. You can get a quick lock with a 50+ meter accuracy (all fine and dandy) but when you are driving around with a 50+ meter accuracy the issues become quite obvious. Here are some examples:
1) The device thinks you are either on the street you are actually on or a street that is adjacent/parallel/etc to it...if it thinks you are on another street, navigation will try to route you and give you incorrect directions.
2) You make a right turn as indicated by your navigation, but due to the inaccuracy, navigation thinks you are going straight....because it doesnt know better....resulting in rerouting you since it thinks you didnt make the turn you were supposed to.
3) You get a good satellite lock but all the sudden, your devices loses the lock and "quickly" locks again...resulting in repositioning where the device thinks you are in a 50+ meter radius....which might not always be where you ACTUALLY are....resulting in rerouting you. (I call this GPS teleporting).
4) You are already moving and all the sudden, you see a big blue circle around your arrow icon (using google navigation here). The GPS thinks you are somewhere in that blue shaded circle. A city with lots of adjacent streets and an inaccurate gps makes your unit a useless GPS navigation tool as your device will keep bouncing from street to street (and rerouting you in the process) and you lose your way.
Now think of all those possible combinations with either 2 or 3 or all 4 examples happening at the same time. Sure, it may take 20 seconds for your device to correct itself but 20 seconds while driving can cause you to miss the correct turn (in the city), cause you to make the incorrect turn (in the city), cause you to miss your freeway exit (on the freeway), etc.
If I wanted to know my rough location, then sure, getting a quick gps lock is great, but if I wanted to drive around with it and navigate me....not so great.
Of all the GPS phones I've had this is the worst. Just saying that's all. My hacked HD2 w/Android locks quick and holds accurately MUCH better than the Captivate. Does anyone know why the GPS on the Captivate is so horrible? Software? Hardware?

You know about what...that...that what? What I was saying to your post is that it IS important to get a quick lock when needing to get into nav mode on the go. The accuracy issue while moving is not in question. On mine, I haven't fortunately had much of an issue once locked..it consistently stays on 5M accuracy..just the time it takes to get a lock (up to 2 minutes) is a problem. 50+M accuracy on yours..fuggedaboutit..may as well not even have it

I usta think software, I'm thinking antenna now due to the fact that if I'm navigating, which u usually did, with the phone on my lap, had bad accuracy problems. But I tried to hold it up near the console near the front windshield and most of rouge time out works perfect. No dreaded blue circle, rerouting or gps signal lost.

LMAO. That's hilarious.
The settings you listed are what shows up on mine when I set the Server FQDN Type to AUTO Config in the SUPL/CP Settings. Doesnt work that well for me..I can get a lock 4 out of 5 times maybe but then navigation sucks...

It worked in getting a gps lock faster for me. That saves me about 5 minutes of driving aimlessly (or in the direction I think I should be going) for 5 minutes until it finds my way. However, after the lock, there were times when it kept thinking I was on adjacent roads which told me to take turns that didn't exist and rerouting me. While doing that, I missed a turn here and there and had to find my way again or pull over to the side and wait for my the nav to correctly position me. Either way, it added more than the time it saved me for getting a quick lock (5 minutes) to my trip.
However, as stated earlier, getting a quick lock IS more important than accuracy while driving. So in short, yes, this fix worked!

One of my friends contacted me and told me it helped him. sorry he is not a XDA member.
And when i said lock that doesn't mean just lock...
After applying these settings i get a quick lock AND it stays accurate the entire time.
He and I both have Samsung Captivate and AT&T Service, however we live in very different states.
I got my original Note 4 last Sunday. Since I use GPS navigation quite often, it is always one of the first things I check out when getting a new device. I found that it didn't hold a lock for long, it takes a long time to get a lock again, and when it does lock it's not accurate at all. I got an exchange today, and the same exact thing is happening with my new unit. A friend told me this would be the best place to come for help. She mentioned that rooting and custom romming might be the fix. I haven't rooted since my MyTouch 4G, and I've never used a rom. Can I get some help with that?
Also, I've tried waze instead of Google maps and that didn't help. And yes, high accuracy is turned on.
Thanks in advance!
Bump - any advice? On a different forum, someone mentioned downloading a GPS fix app from the Play Store. I did that, and I'll check it out on the way home from work. But ultimately I'd like a device with strong GPS natively. I'll try to exchange it one more time. I find it really weird that I'm the only one that seems to be having these problems!

Yes, on both devices.
Are you the same penguin from the a/c forums?
Sorry to hear you're still having gps issues with your replacement phone. Silly question, but is high accuracy mode selected in the location settings? Is wifi enabled?
Have you tried installing GPS Status? How many satellites can you lock onto?

Yep, I'm the very same penguin . High accuracy mode is indeed enabled. I haven't tried it with wifi enabled, I usually disable it when I leave home to conserve battery life. I'll try keeping it enabled on my commute home tonight. I've installed GPS status and it locks on to like 13ish out of 20ish satellites (it fluctuates a bit) when I'm stationary so that's not a problem. I haven't tried seeing how many lock on when I'm driving since I don't want to fiddle with my phone that much when I'm on the road. I'm still trying to get one more replacement before my 14 days are up, but the day is approaching quickly, and none of the 7 or 8 stores in my immediate area ever have any in stock! I call every other day and I'm sure I'm driving the reps crazy lol.
I've had this same issue with my first Note 4 on TMo but replaced it last week and havent had any issues besides very occasionally having a slight hang after making a turn and the GPS not registering it for a few hundred feet.
On my first note 4 it would CONSTANTLY lose GPS signal and be wildly inaccurate (not recognizing my turns or the proper facing direction) but hopefully *knock on wood* its been fixed with my new phone. I know you've already exchanged it but...
If you find a fix, please post it here just in case
I had the same problem with the GPS, it was working only on wifi but not with the phone data. But after a full flash it is working fine again. Also, it was very laggy since the first day.
I had a thread around here for similar GPS issue.
I actually got a PM from someone called SamsungSupport.
Anyway I think this is a compass calibration issue.
I installed the GPS Status app and recalibrated the compass.
The next time I used it (yesterday), I didn't have any issues.
I don't know if it has resolved the problem and I'll keep monitoring it whenever I use GPS.
I got my second replacement yesterday, and it's even worse than my initial replacement!! It's as bad as my first device.
I chatted t-mo customer care today and they were of no help. They kept advising me to do the same troubleshooting issues I've already done. Then, I chatted Samsung care and the rep was A LOT more helpful than the previous Samsung rep I spoke with. Samsung has a remote app that you can download from the Play Store, and the Samsung rep can remote into your device and see what you're seeing. We couldn't do much at the time since I'm at work, but I'm set to chat them back right before I leave work. They're going to remote in with me and actually see the issue that I'm having while driving. HOPEFULLY a fix will come out of all this!!
Bump. I'm on my FOURTH replacement now, same issues. What is going on?? So far, I've:
Recalibrated the compass
Tightened the screws underneath the battery door (they seemed pretty tight anyway)
Samsung support reps haven't been able to work with me using the Smart Tutor (remote into my phone to see/manipulate what's on my screen) app. They always disconnect the session before I get on the road, or maybe the session just drops.
Factory resets
Clearing the cache
I got my firmware reflashed at a Samsung kiosk at Best Buy
Make sure high accuracy mode is enabled (these days I never take it off since I'm always fiddling with my GPS)
Tried a number of gps fix apps in the play store
They want me to send in the phone for repair, but I have this nagging feeling that they're going to turn it on, see that gps can indeed get a lock, and send it back. Plus, there's no guarantee that T-Mobile will have a smartphone loaner phone, since they say that those phones keep disappearing because there's only a $50 deposit, so people just take the phones (this is why we can't have nice things). Since no one else is reporting these issues, it's doubtful that Samsung is working on a software fix for it. I'm really REALLY enjoying this phone otherwise, but I NEED gps to work!!
Samsung Note 4 Issue with Waze
I just upgraded from the Note 3 to the Note 4 two days ago and I have the same issue. It took me a few hours but I figured what they have done. They have program the Note 4 for totally hands free driving and if you want to use a GPS program it will be the one they have. You have to activate CAR MODE and you will see and hear your Waze in the background come on line and start to work correctly. Then if you close their program quickly, you will see Waze running correctly for about 5 seconds and the go back to acting up without GPS signal. The GPS signal with high accuracy is tied to the CAR MODE.
TMOBILE will never offer a smartphone loaner as per policy. GPS works fine not sure what ur doing
BAD ASS NOTE 4 + BAD ASS GEAR S
Seem to be having an issue that I can't take care of that I've tried everything that I know that I believed could be causing the drops. The issue I'm having is any time I turn the screen off while driving my GPS will lose its connection after about 5 minutes. I was also losing data so I figured it was an application causing that issue with that problem I got resolved by removing the battery saving application called battery guru. That was actually shutting my data connection off with my screen off so I got rid of that completely but I still seem to have the problem with my GPS drops. My data stays up just fine but it seems like clockwork every 5 minutes the screens off I'm driving and I get that voice GPS connection lost. All I have to do is click the back button in Google Maps and reload my route and BAM its right back up and going. Now I can leave the screen on and I will not lose the GPS signal whatsoever until I turn the screen off. Have went through all the settings that I know of and of course the only battery saving application that I had installed and I can't seem to find the issue. I also use the search tool and couldn't find anyone else with a problem like mine. Does anyone have any suggestions or have seen this on their device? I'm beginning to think this may be a hardware issue I'm not sure. But if it was a hardware issue you would think I would be losing the connection all the time not with just the screen off which leads me back to a software issue. I'm going to keep freezing apps with titanium to see if I can find another culprit. I just don't have anything else installed that should have anything to do with that. Thanks in advance for any help for insight you may have.

My GPS on my Nexus 6 is and always has been amazing. (Thanks for reminding me to compare that when I get the 6P). I use my GPS daily to keep Waze up when I drive to watch for cops, traffic, etc. Even when I know where I'm going I use it and Google play streaming over Bluetooth and my GPS keeps connection even in Manhattan.
I would recommending getting an app called GPS status, it has a few settings to keep GPS active etc, which should solve your problem. However I have no clue what could cause something like that...
