Hello everyone,
I just received my Asus Transformer (WiFi Only) and wanted to connect it to my Nexus S portable hotspot.
The Transformer found the hotspot network and even connected to it but I wasn't able to open web pages or even sync my google account.
I tested this on 2 Transformer units, Galaxy S II phone and a Nexus One (with CM7 which also can't generate a working hotspot network).
After several tests I've discovered every ROM that has Ad-Hoc support behaves the same - generate hotspot network that you can connect to but can't actually use. Also tested all WiFi tether apps on Market - all beacon ad-hoc networks, which Stock Android 3.1 can't find&connect to.
I tested all Ad Hoc supported ROMs: CM7 latest nightly, CM7.0.3 stable, MIUI latest, Oxygen and SupeAosp8.6. Finally flashed a stock 2.3.4 ROM and the hotspot feature worked perfectly. Also tested it on both Nexus S radios (KB3 and KD1).
Would love if someone can locate and fix this bug...
Probably something in the wpa_supplicant file or with DNS resolving.
Thank you!
EDIT: A solution for my specific issue - Will allow Ad Hoc support on the Transformer.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1093778
Still won't solve the main issue when you have to root and add Ad Hoc support for both devices.
I also encountered this problem.
What I did was download an App called: Wireless Tether for Root Users
I would use it anyway because it tracks data usage and enables security options.

Thanks for replying.
As I wrote in the OP, I've tried every WiFi tether app on the Android Market, including wifi tether for root users. All uses adhoc networks which stock Android devices can't see and connect to.
what solves it for me is adding dns host ip on the client computer
it works fine when you do that
I use PDAnet for tablets with my TF - it works really well. You can download it from the market.

You used it to connect your tablet to a hotspot network generated from your CM7/SupeAosp8.6, Oxygen or MIUI ROM?

Thanks, we did it as well on a Linux machine for testing but you can't set static IP on Honeycomb... at least not on stock version.
Regarding PDA for tablets, reading the app description on the Market I understand it uses Bluetooth sharing and not wifi tether. Also, it clearly says it only works for browser, email and YouTube apps. Hardly a solution.
I'll work with a Linux expert today to see if he can solve this. If so, I'll upload the files here.

Yes, I misread your op, hands up; I'm guilty as charged. However, you should perhaps be a little less dismissive of people trying to help you. Also it may have helped if you had posted your question to the correct thread in the first place (that's hardly difficult is it!).

LOL did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed today?
I REALLY wasn't trying to dismiss you... AT ALL!
Your solution will probably be great for many other people but as I mentioned in the OP, I'm looking for a specific solution for the WiFi tether, which is an option coming with stock Android and doesn't require users of any other apps or system knowledge.
As already mentioned, I'm working with a linux guy to check maybe he can make both things work - Ad-Hoc and stock Android WiFi Tether option.
If the XDA moderators think this should go into Q&A/General they can move it. I believe it should be here as it is relevant for all ROM developers here.

I agree with you buddy. I am looking for some pure soul that can develop a patch so I can connect my rooted Nexus S to an Ad-hoc wifi computer connection...
Who wants to be the king?
Has anyone had any success using OpenVPN (or even the built in VPN function) with their HTC One? I've tried a couple different providers through both methods, and though I can successfully connect to the VPN, I can't receive data.
I currently have ViperROM\Bulletproof Kernel, so my next step is to flash to stock and see if I still have problems...but before I do that I was hoping to find someone confirm they've successfully used a VPN with their HTC One.
Thanks!

That's interesting...someone in another thread said theirs wouldn't work at all either. I'm getting my OTG cable so I can backup my phone today and wipe it and try from a fresh stock flash to see if that solves my problem.
Did anybody find a solution I am still having problems. I can establish a VPN connection with the vpn of our university it even tells me that packages are beeing sent and received. BUT once i am connected the internet stops working after a 30-60 seconds. I tried even 3rd party apps like vpn root I can't get it to work.
My build is Trickdroid 11.0 with elementalX Kernel 5.2 allthough I tried also installing 4.22 and 4.1 so the issue appears to be somewhere else. The connection is a pptp with encryption enabled. Pretty old fashion but this shouldn't be the problem, right?

I'm running OMJ's ROM and using WiFi Tether TrevE Mod "Version 3.2-beta-modv5-***Synergized***"
Okay so even with the settings that everyone recommends for the HTCone, and a few modifications, I still cannot get the blasted thing to work.
Settings I've tried:
Profile: Generic ICS/JB(wlan0)
Setup-Method: Auto
Encryption ON (p/w is the correct format AFAIK, about 12 lowercase letters no numbers, similar to the default)
Changed SSID to "HTCone" no spaces
Wifi Driver Reload (1) checked
MSS Clamping checked
Routing Fix checked
With those settings, I can't even get it to broadcast. It says it's running but no devices can find it. It simply isn't there.
If I disable Wifi Driver Reload (1) it begins broadcasting. However, when I attempt to connect, the second device just sits there at "Obtaining IP Address..." for about 90 seconds then retries and gets stuck at "Authenticating" then back. An endless loop never resulting in a connection.
The most frustrating thing about this is that it was JUST working the day before. I didn't touch ANYTHING and it just decided to take a dump.
Addendum: I was looking at the notes in the bottom of the ABOUT screen and I noticed the updates are quite old. Is it possible I have an old version that doesn't work with the HTC One? I got it from QBKING77's website.
Happened to me and don't have an answer. I wiped and didn't restore anything to resolve it. Restoring data broke it again.

I followed this guide that worked for my Note II and I have no problems. I'm typing this message from my laptop tethered to my ONE. I have WiFi-driver reload 2 checked.

I had no luck wiping the phone and re-installing the ROM. It was still FUBAR after the fresh flash of OMJ. What drives me NUTS about that is the fact that it was JUST working not 12hrs before it stopped working.
To give some more information as to the issue, it appears that checking either one (or both) of the Force Driver options causes it to not broadcast at all. If either of those two are checked, the hotspot isn't even visible to any device. If left unchecked, the hotspot becomes visible. However, upon trying to connect to the hotspot, it gets stuck in a loop of "Authenticating..." then "Obtaining IP address" which never results in a connection.
I've tried the options listed in that guide you posted, but to no avail.
So, at this point, I'm wondering if it's just because I'm using an outdated WiFi hotspot app. If anyone has one that's been updated since a little under a year ago, I'd appreciate a link. Thanks!

Not sure which one you are using but I'm using the one right from the Play Store v3.3 beta 2. You can also get it from here. I just went back to SWG 1.18 from a 4.2.2 ROM and reinstalled and all is good. Everything connects just fine using those settings from the link I posted earlier.

In the first post I listed which version I was using. Unfortunately, even the newest version fails to work. I don't get this. Maybe it has something to do with the OMJ ROM and how close to stock it is. Perhaps I should try a different ROM.
This is a far cry from the CM7 ROM I had on my EVO which allowed me to tether perfectly all the time without the hassle. Maybe I'll try CM again on my One.
I'm gonna download & flash OMJ's ROM & see if I can recreate it. You running the latest version right?

Similar issue here
I'm having issues with wifi tether on my HTC One, as well. I can tell you that if you set the Device-Profile to "Auto," it will create an ad-hoc connection that my Windows 7/Ubuntu Studio desktop will recognize. Ubuntu recognizes it as a regular wifi hotspot, and connects automatically. Windows recognizes it as an ad-hoc connection, and I have to connect manually. My Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 does not see the connection at all, and neither does my LG Blu-Ray player. If I change the profile to Generic ICS/JB (wlan 1), then other devices see the connection, and will even attempt to connect to it, but there is never a successful connection with internet access. If I choose Generic ICS/JB (wlan 0), then nothing sees it as a viable connection. I am running the stock sense ROM, and have done no updates (so I'm still at JB 4.1). I can tell you that wifi tether errors frequently for me, and I have to reboot quite a lot. If I leave my phone broadcasting overnight, then in the morning wifi tether thinks that I don't have root, and gives me the "your phone is in an unknown state" error message; at that point, the only way to stop the wifi is to reboot.
So, I can make it work, for a limited number of devices. I would like to use it as a wifi connection for my tablet and my Blu-Ray player, however. I have searched quite a bit to try to figure this out, and I haven't been able to find a reliable answer. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
I got mine to work. Can surf the web, check email, etc. now the damn thing will not stream video. I am connected to 4g and speed test on my ipad verify it but won't stream. Pisses me off.

Try to go to advanced settings at the upper right portion of the settings. Then click LAN Settings > Reset to default settings. I have the same problem with you. I've tried it and it worked.
I have been trying to download xposed modules (and even the latest xposed framework) all day. Each time it just sits there "Download waiting...." forever till it fails. I just tried to download one of the module apk files via my desktop browser, and it is sitting there for about 4 minutes not "connecting".
So far I do not see anyone else complaining about this so I do not know what is up.

Try turning off wifi and using your phones connection. Also, please reply with your general location and your ISP so I can try to determine if its dns or location based.

When I switch to mobile data network on AT&T it downloads just fine. This is ridiculous, I've never had restrictions on this ISP before. I'm about to call cox right now. I don't pay $55 a month for some fascist ISP to tell me what I can and can't connect to, especially when it's not even a site that is not breaking any copyright laws, this isn't China.

I have, for years. They block high profile irc networks dns by redireting it to their own server (which then auto joins your user to a channel and tries to run a lot of botnet commands to uninstall a botnet client in the event you are compromised). I used to have to deal with this a lot years ago when I was on irc frequently. They will deny it, but they have been doing stuff like that for years.
Then again, it could be some sort of dns issue that will work itself out.

I'm not sure what support you think anyone can provide. The repo works fine for most people, indicating that there's nothing wrong with it and the problem is almost certainly something at your end.

It just strange that this is happening and I'm reading reports where people other than me seem to be having the same issue. I guess I was hoping for some direction or trouble shooting suggestions from XDA forums as I honestly wouldn't know of a better place to search for assistance. Is there any suggestions that might help me back track the issue. I've honestly tried everything I know. I purposely side loaded two third party apps and those installed flawlessly. It's only the xposed framework application and it's modules I'm having trouble with... timing out and not installing. The modules I have pre existing on my SD installed fine, it's only when trying trying to download from within the Xposed framework that doesn't install. I show an update available for one of my existing modules and it won't even update.... same thing, it just times out. Again, any assistance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
This seems to be a network related issue, rather than a problem with the repo. I have updated several modules over a couple of days with no issues and this problem only seems to be affecting a small amount of people.
Are you using the same internet provider as others in the thread? I can only think they blocked it as GermainZ said earlier. Perhaps a visit to the support forum of your provider might help, even to check if anyone else reported this issue.

Also have OS 4.0.2 and had the same issue - unable to use with QR code.
I've instead was able to connect via Wi-Fi Direct by going into OP3T Wi-Fi Direct option, changing my G7 connection method to Wi-Fi Direct and selecting my phone. Afterwards, the OP3T asked if I wanted to allow the camera to connect.
This is the only way I was able to connect. Previously, I enabled developer mode and enabled legacy DHCP client which is no longer available.
