The users. First off I want to make this very clear, I am not responsible for anything nor is droidxforums for any damages done to devices due to root, since it was up to the user to make the decisions they make. Thank you, please continue to read.
1. First off I am posting this for reasons that were obvioulsy not too obvious.
2. If you chose to delete anything other than something that can be downloaded from the market, YOU took that risk. You have potentially just bricked your device.
3. DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING THAT HAS "BLUR" IN ITS FILE NAME.
4. DO NOT try to flash a custom recovery via Rom Manager then wonder why your phone is stuck with a cool new Motorola logo.
5. This thread will be updated very frequently, before posting questions and what not, just post your problem, no questions please, I will be using this to help as many of you as possible.
6. Most importantly do not mess with the framework right now, there is many $600 papers weights laying around now.
7. DO NOT TOUCH BACK UP ASSISTANCE UNLESS ITS WINDY IN YOUR HOUSE OR OFFICE AND YOU NEED A PAPER WEIGHT.
Thank you.

We tested this last nite,, you can do basically whatever you want as long as you put the phone back to pristine condition before you do a wipe or update or whatever..
Here is the basic method that works to copy files back to the phone if you took out bloat..
http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/droid-x-hacks/1462-how-put-back-backup-assistant-if-you-removed-but-arent-bootlooping.html
Works with all system apks, though.

It seems that no one knows for sure.
People have been able to root, re-copy any removed system applications ( blockbuster, skype, etc..) apply the .604 update and stay rooted
Only time will tell for sure
I only deleted Blockbuster, Skype, NFSShift, and AmazonMP3/Kindle apps. Would I need to put those back on and unroot if I wanted to do a hard reset?
From what I hear, you need to put back ALL of the apps that came with the phone to apply the .604 update
Un-rooting doesn't seem to be necessary

He is correct, we have had phones with tons removed, copied everythign back with the right permissions, took out all the things that root did, basically un-rooting, apply the update, then re-root, so you will have to put the phone back to pristine before the update, but it works fine.
At least it does for now. As for the rooting, it is a huge gaping hole in linux/android, not a specific phone or phone home launcher so it will likely not be fixed until at least Gingerbread 3.0 IF THEN. Bird really smoked the monkey on this one, i would marry him if it was legal.
But yeah, dont freak out if u removed a ton of stuff, here is a complete pristine system app dir if u need:
http://www.chadhaney.com/droidXDefault/
Zanix, thanks for updating into the post, i hope it ends up helping people.
Updated OP with direct link to original .apk list
Hey,
Where can I find a list of the correct permissions? I removed like 5 apps and copied them back and still the update fails.
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
Check the permissions from one of the files you did not remove
I'm not 100% sure that will work
It is 644 if I recall correctly.
I think you need to check the umask for each file as well
ON the post on how to put back backup assistant it tells you the permissions for all the files in the app dir
its in the first post
So I wanted to install a status bar replacement for Droid X, which involves replacing framework-res.apk. Instead of doing it through adb, I replaced the file with Root Explorer, and it sent it into boot loop. Do I now have a paperweight? =/
I tried doing factory reset, but that didn't fix it...
Edit: It sees update.zip on my SD card in recovery mode (some file I think I downloaded before), so is there a way to maybe apply a recovery command to replace framework-res.apk?
Edit2: sigh, nvm, there is no update.zip on the SD card, I'm not sure where it's reading it from. But when I tell it to apply it, it doesn't find it either. Looks like I bricked my phone
Has anyone been using Autostarts to block the bloat from loading on boot?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
The Titanium Backup "Freeze" feature has been working like a charm for me. I've frozen all of the bloatware (the autorun stuff) and seen no adverse effects on the phone.
The phone seems to perform better without the running bloat. But this might be a placebo effect. The jury is still out...I'm testing. One thing is for sure, I feel better knowing that useless extra processes are not running in the background.
The big open question for me is how does the TB Freeze function work? Is it like the task killers or does it intercept the app on boot?
It does not change anything in the root directory since all the *.apk files are in tact for the frozen apps. This is the main reason I use the freeze since there seems to be little risk of bricking the phone with this method.
Can someone with the 5.7.893 OTA whose webtop works and shows the proper version (as opposed to unknown) please pull and post a link to the following webtop files:

It is also very important whenever anyone gets a file from the test servers via the cheesecake app to pull the file from the /cache directory and copy it to the sdcard-ext directory so you can save it for general use and analysis for what is valuable.
Thanks!

There is a 5.5.886 to 5.7.893 leaked ota which you will need.
The issue with webtop was the 5.6.893 mr1.
By applying the leaked update mentioned above you will have a working webtop.

You should be able to, but make sure you make a backup of 5.7.893 before you do just in case it doesn't work and you need to go back.
I already have a backup of 5.7, so I went back to 5.5.893 and did the update, and although I did forever root, I lost root. But I manually installed it, so all is right with the world again.
I can get these to you.

I went and rooted my droid 4, and without knowing about safestrap, i started backing up and deleting apps with the free version of Titanium Backup. I now have a couple of apps that will not restore back into place, and i am unable to perform the upgrade. Since then, i have installed safestrap, and attempted to flash the rom at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1508341, but all i do is bootloop on my safe system. Any idea what i can do to fix the unsafe side so i can apply the 219 update? Am i kinda out of luck until the fastboot files are released?

What I'd do is download the stock recovery files that Hashcode has put up, and make sure you have anything you want backed up, and try advanced restore and flash all 3 options. As for the boot loop, did you try to clear cache and dalvik cache?
Are you referring to the [SAFESTRAP ROM] Stock MotoBlur 6.13.215 for Droid 4 at droidforums (forum won't let me post link) for hashcode's stock recovery? Or do you mean simply uninstalling the safestrap recovery from the safestrap app? I haven't played much with the stock recovery, so i'm not sure what 3 options you are referring to.
As far as the safe side, i wiped cache, wiped dalvik cache in the advanced menu, and done a factory reset... still bootloops...

I am having the same issue. I was recommended to unzip the stock rom posted and attempt either a direct or adb push install of those apk's that are missing. Someone did this one by one and was successful in installing the 219 update.
You could attempt to install the stock rom through safestrap to get the update. please make sure that you are at full 100% charge as most roms wont flash correctly with less. I recommend getting full charge and flashing while still plugged in.
Hey guys, so what exactly is going on? You are missing apks on your main system, and your safe system bootloops?
So, your primary system functions, it just is missing bloatware, preventing you from updating? I just want to be sure I understand before making a recommendation.
Welp, i got some good news, i got the main system fixed and then updated. I took a stock 215 rom, extracted the /system/app folder and the system/build.prop to the sd card. Then i simply copied the contents of that folder into the /system/app on the root of the system with a file manager (used estrong's, other file managers that support root should work.), copied the build.prop to /system, and then did the update OTA. I lost safestrap and root, but i was able to reroot with moto fail... i have not tried reinstalling safestrap yet, nor have i mess with the bloatware like i did last time.

I sort of did the same thing. I downloaded the rooted stock from and unzipped it. I then rebooted and manually tried to install the update and noted what files needed to be restored and then I coped them to dropbox then moved them to /system/app and it worked
I attempted to move the files but got an error when doing so saying I could not move them to the folder. The only file I seem to be getting the error with is backupassistantclient.apk but that might be because it is getting to that first and erroring out. Does Astro not support root to ove the files in /system, etc?

Why don't you just flash it back to stock instead of messing it up more. I got a thread up here on our to do that.

I saw this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1832878 and I want to update to ICS but I haven't really been keeping up to speed with any of these threads. When I first got my phone I rooted and froze bloatware, then I installed safestrap but because I hadn't seen any stable releases I removed it.
Does it matter which build of gb I have to install the ics update? Do I need to unfreeze all my frozen apps?
Sent from my DROID4 using xda app-developers app
Welcome to the Droid4 community. From what I understand it shouldn't matter what build you are on as long as it is stock. You will also have to unfreeze your apps and make sure no stock apps are missing.
The update checks to make sure the stock system is unaltered before patching. There are fastboot files and various Droid 4 utilities you can use to assist you in upgrading. Check out a few links in the Development section.
Cheers!

Your system version should be 6.13.219, if you had safestrap before the update might fail. Be sure that you didn't just uninstall the app but also the custom recovery. If you didn't reinstall safestrap and then using the app uninstall the recovery. If the update still fails then you need to fix the "logwrapper" file. Look in your system/bin folder for a file named "logwrapper" and "logwrapper.bin". If you have both then do this: Delete the "logwrapper" and renaned "logwrapper.bin" to "logwrapper". Reboot then apply the update.
If this sounds like too much you can just fastboot the ICS file with RSD Lite.
Hi Guys,
I have a question/problem in regards to the recent OTA update to Jelly Bean (4.1.2) for my Droid 4. I just recently installed the update and, as expected, lost root just like with any other OTA update. So I ran motofail like I normally do to restore root. After the reboot, I noticed that "Superuser" was back on the apps screen. So I went ahead to reconfigure Titanium Backup and it says that I don't have root privileges.
Upon doing some more research, I found out that motofail does not work with Jelly Bean and I was pointed to the RAZR BLADE exploit. After running the exploit to completion, I ended up exactly where I started. "Superuser" was still there and I still couldn't use Titanium Backup. Root Checker, unsurprisingly, says that the device is not rooted properly.
My question is, where do I go from here? I would really like to restore root, but I am unsure of what to do next. Searching has yielded no results. As you can see, I am a complete noob when it comes to these devices. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Sbf is lazy for fastboot. Long story short what you want to do is use a sbf(.xml) file to restore your device to stock. Once you have done that you should be able to get a proper root by using the tools above. I hope i helped a bit and try not to brick

Where do I go from here? I really don't want to wipe all the data from the phone.

I GOT ROOT! I'm going to structure this post in such a way so that it will be easily searchable by those who are having the same problem.
The issue that I was having was that the RAZR Blade exploit was giving me the following errors when trying to root:

mkdir failed for /data/logger, File Exists
Unable to chmod /data/logger: Operation not permitted
link failed File exisits
Device: Droid 4
Network: Verizon
System: XT894

What I did to solve the problem:
-Settings > Apps > Smart Actions > Clear data
-Settings > Storage > ≡ Button > USB computer connection > Select "Media device (MTP)
-Ran the exploit again. Went through with no errors. Upon reboot I had root access.
After I had root access, I went back to the USB computer connection and changed back to Mass Storage mode.

SBF is a file type and stands for Single Binary File that is the older format of Motorola flash files for use with RSD lite or other flash tools.
They include all of the code groups, header files and checksums as well as a RAM Downloader for all of the device partition images in a single file and flashed from the legacy boot loader enumerated as a flash device.
The new format for all dual core Motorola devices is zip archive of fastboot images and an XML file that can be used with RSD lite to flash in a single operation or flashed as individual images using the fastboot binary and DLLs in the Android SDK from the fastboot boot loader and enumerated as an ADB device.
These are entirely different modes of access and operation and SBF is both wrong and a misnomer for the firmware files for current devices.
The fast boot interface provides far more flexibility and safety for flashing than the old flash interface and avoids all kinds of problems that would arise from managing and updating he firmware on newer chipset devices.
It is an extremely important distinction to make and understanding to have about how these phones work.
Please stop using SBF when referring to XML.zip files.
The current acronym for Motorola firmware files is FXZ and means Full XML ZIP file.
FXZ is a made up term.
SBF is an official Motorola file type as is an XML.zip or tar.gz
thank you, I was hoping someone would clear that up, better than I could
