This is a post I wrote for my personal forums nTelosDroid.com, but noticing there isn't a dedicated how to for CDMA Milestones, here it is!
So I posted how to root your Milestone using z4root a few days ago, which can be found here [link]. Now, with this post, I'm going to show you how to Root, ROM, and Restore back to the normal nTelos firmware. So heres the tools you'll need to begin. NOTE: These tools are all available for free! I'll host them for you on my DropBox as well as this server.
:!: WARNING: THIS CAN BRICK YOUR DEVICE MAKING IT COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY USELESS! I, MY SITE, OR MY STAFF, CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING YOU DO TO YOUR DEVICE! :!:
So, first thing we have to do before ANYTHING else is root or "open" your device. How we achieve this is by installing z4root or Universal Androot. Install the app, follow the directions for z4root from this thread. If you install Universal Androot, once it's installed:
Open Universal Androot
Select Superuser for Android 2.0 ~ 2.2
Don't tick Root Temporary or it'll root until next reboot
Then click Root
If you just want root, stop here. If you want to make a backup and rom your device, continue.
Once you're rooted, exit to your Home screen, check to see if SuperUser was added to your list of apps. If it hasn't try to reroot. Once you see SuperUser, go to the Marketplace and download "ROM Manager" by clockworkmod. This is the tool we need to make a backup and rom the device. Once ROM Manager is installed, run it. You'll be prompted to enable SuperUser permissions. Click Allow.
Scroll all the way down to "Flash Alternate Recovery" which should say SPRecovery 0.99.3b
It'll go through a download process and after that it'll Flash your recovery.
DO NOT PULL THE BATTERY OUT OR SHUT THE PHONE DOWN! YOU'LL BRICK YOUR DEVICE!
Scroll all the way back to the top and Flash the ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.0.1
It'll go through a download process and after that it'll Flash your recovery.
DO NOT PULL THE BATTERY OUT OR SHUT THE PHONE DOWN! YOU'LL BRICK YOUR DEVICE!
Once everything is flashed and finished, you are now ready to perform a nandroid backup.
Scroll to Backup Current Rom
A Window will pop up and you'll be able to name your new backup.
Once it's named to your liking, click ok. Your device will reboot.
After it reboots into recovery, it'll do a backup process. This shouldn't take more than 5 minutes.
It should make a backup and reboot.
If this doesn't happen, something has failed, pull the battery, reboot into recovery.
Perform a nandroid backup. If that doesn't work, Congratulations! You'll have to sbf! (Google how to do this)
Once this process is finished, you'll have a full backup of your current OS! Now, you can completely stop here and enjoy your nTelos Milestone as "Stock" or continue on to ROM your device.
Open ROM Manager again, and scroll down to Download ROM. Now here's where you have to make a choice. If you don't want to make it a simple easy process, use the free version. You'll have to clear your cache and data in recovery by yourself. This tutorial will not get into that.
Roming is one of those things that if you do it, you will need to know EXACTLY what you're getting into. You're gonna have to setup settings that are hidden in the phone to make things like MMS and Data work. I'm merely showing how to ROM the device, another tutorial will show you how to setup things that aren't working. If you take it upon yourself to write one, please let me know, I'll link to it here.
Once you've downloaded the ROM of your choice, before you do ANYTHING make sure you have a BACKUP!!! Once you have that done, you find the ROM from the downloads section that you want, I chose Bugless Beast (but Cyanogen Mod is another ROM of choice). Once it's done downloading, it'll give you the option to backup your current rom and wipe the data/cache. Select both regardless if you have a backup. It'll go through the backup/install process. Your device will ask you to go through the basic initial setup. If it doesn't, click on the Market and sign in. Once that's done, your data, voice, and sms will be completely ready! If you want to enable MMS (Picture/Video Messages), follow these steps.
Open Voice Dial (NOT Voice Search)
Say in a clear voice "Open APN's". This may take several tries.
Once it's gives you that choice, click it.
You'll see Verizon, tab it, change the name from Verizon to nTelos first
Scroll down to MMSC and enter http://mms.ntelospcs.net
Hit the Menu button (the Four bars next to the House on your device) and click Save
Send a MMS to yourself to test the settings work!
And that's it! You have Rooted, Backed Up, and ROMed your device in under 1 hour! CONGRATS! If any thing messes up, you always have your back up. Boot into recovery by pressing and holding X then hitting the power button while keeping X pressed. Go to nandroid and recover from your SD card! Hope this helps!

I hope that this is a help for ANYONE on ANY Forum! Please, feel free to copy/paste this anywhere you feel necessary!
EDIT: For those with LOCKED Bootloaders, there was a post deep in the thread for unlocking them. Here's the quote:

Very Nice
Great job and all of us CDMA a854 milestones thank you. We need more CDMA stuff!
The Apns part didnt work for me. It either won't save or goes blank and reverts to Verizon on reboot. *tried APN manager as well* Also I noticed the marketplace usually says My Apps, but will switch to Verizon if you flash to say Cyanogen 6.1.2., Bugless ,or LFY.It would be great IF we could get developers to have ROM with no APN's so we can add our own.
Thanks again for the guide, nicely done.

Yeah man! No problem! As far as APN Manager/APN Backup & Restore. If you just edit the MMSC, do you have the same problem?
Oh I tried APN manager and a slew of others. Still didnt work, editing the MMSC either. There is a way to drop APNs into the Rom before installing.Ipfreelytech made one for me. But if I want to run other ROms it would be nice to have a real fix.
Nice work wish I had it before I began...

I would be interested in testing as well....
AWESOME
Glad I found this post. I live in Roanoke, VA & my carrier is nTelos. I have been looking for WEEKS on an Android Sense 2.2 rom. I mainly want to just have to option of saving my apps on my SD card. I love Android but WinMo has 1 up on Android with being able to install apps to the SD card.
Good luck & I can't wait to see what you come up with!
I am in Roanoke as well
Will this work for an Alltel Milestone.
As far as I know, this should work on most cdma a854's
From the Milestone
It works with Alltel. I just need to know if I can flash back to my stock 2.1 update 1 nandroid backup from CyanigenMod 6.1.2 without running into problems with the kernel not being compatible. I heard that if you flash between Froyo and Eclair you'll brick your phone because the kernels aren't compatible. Is this true?
Alltel Motorola Milestone A854 / Droid CyanogenMod 6.1.2.
Can't find the sbf for Ntelos
I need help returning my phone to the stock sbf. I rooted my phone, all was well until I started playing with Titanium Backup. I deleted Google talk, and as a result I would get this error "process Google.process.gapps has stopped unexpectedly" I tried several different things to fix it but finally decided to just flash back to the stock ROM/sbf. I used the MILER_X1-00.26.1 (I now know that my build is 00.26.0) that and-developers.com sites for use. The problem is that now I have the Verizon stock info on my phone. It changed the MIN, PRL MEID AND phone number. I get an error on start up that my phone needs to be activated, it places a call that starts off "welcome to verizon, to activate your phone......" So now I have no phone service. I can use the wifi so I have access to everything that has been backed up via Titanium Back up, but as you know that will not contain any system data from the stock sbf. Does anyone have any ideas or am I just prolonging the insurance call for replacement?

Is there a chance you could put a brief description of the Sbf wipe / restore method, or maybe a link you know of? I've been digging for a week and all I find are droid 2 & X references. ROM manager decided to not get me back to a recovery / boot loader screen and I am really stuck.

Really not trying to be lazy, but all the .sbf methods I've read so far seem require you getting to a boot loader. If I could get to a boot loader this wouldn't be a problem, as I made a back up of my stock ROM. I have a functioning bugless beast ROM, just no recovery / boot loader, and no way to flash back to my recovery.
**Edit**
Problem fixed, sorry for the interruption.
Hello everyone I have read around and still cant find a answer 100 percent.. I even searched the web. I read lots of guides how to root a milestone a854 but I'm getting different types of errors.. First sites wants you to run the update.zip file which you cant do because you have to use the exploit if im correct. Now, I cant find any help on this problem trying to run a sbf file in rsd lite. I get the this error.
critical error

My boot loader is 2c.6c, my phone is through alltel. I dont want to brick it. I tried to do a Motorola update and it screwed up my phone. Which i almost didn't get it replaced because i void the warranty. It actually reload onto the Verizon service, i didn't have internet access at all, and Alltel support couldn't fix it. I originally traded a htc wildfire for a milestone. Which the guy already had modded. Which it had a nano backups. My phone got stolen and ended doing a insurance claim. So now it has android 2.1 with the update1. I want to root it and be able to run a custom rom, like fire and ice, or like Cynanon mod. I would like to run open recovery, but dont need it if i can run the nanoid backups also. When i run the update.zip i get this error.
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command
-- Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:EOCD marker occurs after start of EOCD
E:signature verification failed.
Installation Aborted.
So if I'm not wrong you have to downgrade the software to run a exploit? Now what spf file should i use and is there any guide or forum with my ? already answered if anyone can point me please. I want to be able to use my milestone with my new hp touchpad. I want to be able to load up a hotspot or use the WiFi tether. Thanks for any help. If anyone needs more info you can pm me or even just post here. Thanks again.

Install rom manager from market. Buy the premium version, its worth it. Install cwm recovery and the app will allow you to do anything. Flash roms, backup.
Your phone is basically a droid1.

Check out this guide here on xda-developers.
The only thing you need to understand is the sequence in which the steps have to be performed. Basically:
1. flash a vulnerable bootloader
2. install a custom recovery like OpenRecovery (update.zip)
3. through the use of OpenRecovery install Cyanogenmod/MIUI ROMs
Ok.. what version am i running?? Im in the usa and got the phone here. The only close place would be canada but i dont know if thats the one. Might be able to use the uk one. What one should i use.. Now if this gets me same results which i have a feeling it will. Will just using the Clockworld mod just work?? I want to be able to use other roms I want to actually use the fire and ice mod. Also would like to be able to use a wifi tether because i just got a Hp touchpad. I can root my phone through z4mod, but i want to be able to do nano backups and stuff like that. Im going to try the canada one and if i get the same error in the rsd lite. What else can i try to get open recovery working?
Thanks ahead for anyhelp.

Yeah, didnt read carefully enough. Ignore my post about the Milestone sbf's.
From what i understand all milestones are droids... Milestone is just a different software and different from the droid in some ways. I use alltel service and when they sell me the phone its the milestone because thats the only phone they offer. They dont offer a driod or anything. But the id number for the phone is supposed to be droid number is what Motorola says. So what kinda options do i have for roms then? Can someone link me the roms that can be used. I have the rom manager but it doenst list any roms in the download area. Its supposedly the paid version. I also wouldnt mind just getting updated to the newer andriod so i can use flash, but alltel doenst offer updates yet. Should i try to root the phone like a driod? because i dont want to mess up the phone because it will void warranties. I like to make sure im doing it right and not going to brick the phone. I figure theres got to people that have the same phone as me and same issues. Thanks again..
Im going to mess with the Rom manager and see if i can get a rom from it. But last time i tried i had no luck with one. I also have the clockwork mod running and can do nanoriod backups.. when i try to recover like one of the fire and ice nanriods it gives me a md5 error.
Thanks. looking for some more help..

No brother. You got it wrong. Milestones are not droids. Two basic differences.
Milestone is GSM, Droid is CDMA.
Milestone has locked bootloader, Droid has an unlocked one.
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/motorola-milestone/121260-milestones-not-all-same-a853-a854.html
Alltel milestone A854 is a Droid. All Droid roms will work for it. Just be sure to make a backup of your phone before flashing anything becoz getting 3g to work has been very difficult if you get back to stock.
Cm6, cm7, miui for droid will work on your phone.
You will brick your phone if you try and nandroid restore I&F on your phone. You have been warned.

Found this on Droidforums.net, at least my milestone doenst have a locked bootloader i guess. LOL Still having issues. But I did get rom manager working but when i loaded droid steel it would hang up on the boot screen and would only just replay the boot flash over and over and would not boot all the way up. Anyone else have the same problem?? What other custom rom out there that is good or popular?? Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks..
Milestones are not all the same (A853 / A854)
Something I have not seen mentioned much in this Milestone forum is that there are drastic differences in different models of Milestones. Motorola made things very confusing when they decided to make two phones which are very different have the same name. I started this thread to try and help clear it up a little. I wasted alot of time reading information that was totally irrelevant to my phone.
Milestone Model A853 is GSM and is the Milestone that is mentioned in most forums. Unlike the DROID, the A853 Milestone has a bootloader that only allows signed Firmware to load. There are other differences that I have not researched since this is not the model I have. Motorola is suppose to offer a 2.2 update for this phone at some point in the future.
Milestone Model A854 is CDMA and does not have a locked bootloader. The A854 is the same phone as the A855 Droid but branded with the Milestone name for licensing to small carriers. This model will not receive a official 2.2 update but most if not all the custom roms for the A855 Droid will work on the A854. I am currently running CyanogenMod-6.1.2-Droid which is Android Version 2.2.1 on a A854.
I am sure this is old news for some but like I mentioned before I wasted alot of time reading Milestone forums when I should have been reading Droid forums for information about the A854. I hope someone finds this information useful. If any of this information is incorrect please feel free to correct me.
Now for a question. This forum section is labeled "Verizon Android Phones > Motorola Milestone". Has Verizon ever carried a Milestone? I thought they were CDMA and have always sold the CDMA Motorola A855 Droid.

LOL Sorry did see this post when i type my last one sorry. But thats where i read it at. Also i used rom manager to load Droid Steel which is really nice, but might try some other ones also. Also made backups of orginal rom so i can always go back and like you said if something screws up. I see what your saying on the 3g thing.. Do you know if they have had issues with the 3g on the droid steel because looks like im only getting 1g but i could be wrong. I dont get the best receiption in the house. Thanks for the help, which actually helped me alot. Thanks again.

I also have a A854 milestone and one person will tell ya the droid roms work on it the next person says they wont?!! one person says rom manager wont work for the milestone another says it will! one says CWM will work another says it it wont that need mini mod or andrianai recovery who knows Im afraid to do anything cuz i cant afford a brick!
It's simple:
There was a Droid A855 (cdma, bootloader unlocked)
Only one month later there was a Milestone A853 (gsm/umts, bootloader locked)
So far so good, there's a Droid and there's a Milestone. Two similar, but actually very different, not ROM compatible phones.
And then, more than half year later, there was suddenly a Milestone A854, which is actually a Droid A855, only named differently. (cdma, bootloader unlocked).
Now there's confusion.
So: If you read Milestone, it usually means the GSM variant A853. Droid means A855/A854, cdma.
If you have A854, don't look for Milestone stuff, because you have a Droid.
I recently upgraded from my HTC Hero to an A854, but I'm having a problem getting Rom Manager. It's not in the market, and I've tried downloading it from the site, but I get an error saying "There is a problem parsing the package." Unfortunately I only have my phone on me, and I don't see any other way to flash Clockwork on it. Even if I did have my computer though, I still haven't been able to find a guide without broken links. Any help would be appreciated!
Scratch all of that. Just decided to do it on a laptop a little while ago because I found all the links. Followed the Droid instructions on Cyanogenmod's wiki, but replace the Clockwork .sbf file with a different recovery I found (only because the Clockwork link was broken). Flashed it and everything went fine! Put the good ol' Cyan on it and even though I had it on my hero, it still amazes me. Remember guys, follow DROID instructions if you have the A854!
Looks like custom roms might finally be here for the xt860 (and possibly me863, read Update4 below for more info). Thanks to Hashcode for all the work he's done for all of us building safestrap, porting cm7 and everything, daywalker04 for uploading the Brazil Retail sbf, Endroid for being the first to try it with a normal bootstrap and now I'm confirming it working with Hashcodes newest safestrap(as well as his old ones, I originally tested w/v0.92 and worked my way up to current). I Just booted cm7 off /preinstall.
As usualy, please keep in mind that neither I or anyone else will take any responsibility for anything that happens to your phone through use of these files.
IF/When you enable and disable safestrap remember to format data/cache, causes bootlooping for me if I don't.
Warning, if you do this the way things are now you will not be able to get back to your bell software!! Only do this is you are absolutely sure you know what you're doing!!!!!!!!
You may have to be on the brazillian retail rom for this to work! You can find it in This Thread. You're looking for Fastboot package for UMTS XT860 Retail Brasil. At this point in time you can't get back to bell stock so again, it's at you're own risk!!
UPDATE: Thanks Rick2 for the recovery fix that allows us to swap between safestrap on the fly. Now when I need data I can get it anywhere. Works with Hashcodes newest safestrap (1.06). Go here to thank him and get the patch!
Update2: I've attached a CWM flashable zip that I've used to successfully get 3g working on Liberty and Mavs Rom, it does not work on cm7 but will hopefully work on other verizon based roms. It pushes the stock libmoto_ril.so(from the brazil retail), a new apns-xml.conf and a slightly edited build.prop(just made it en/US). I've had it cause the phone to fc loop if I installed it on an existing rom and didn't factory reset.
Update3: Watching this thread for info about me863 I think but according to that thread a user has flashed the brazil retail to his me863 and is trying to get data working
Update4: I've reworked the data patch to make it more universal. It should work on me863 providing safestrap runs on your phone. The patch will now copy files from /systemorig so you'll be using matching kernel/libs etc rather than using generic xt860 files. It also makes backups of the original files in the same location (just adds a .bak extension). This new patch IS SAFESTRAP ONLY. Huge huge thanks to Adamogle!!! If it weren't for him I'd still be banging my head up against the wall and no one would be using this patch. You may have to format data/cache, I left it out of the patch so everyone can test (if you phone goes into a force-crash loop then reboot and clear data/cache). Once I get confirmation of this working (or not) on the me863 I'll fix the thread again. I've left the old data patch(renamed as fit) as well in case anyone runs into troubles. Still not a cm7/9 patch, if one comes about it will get it's own thread but it works on all other custom roms based on motorola firmware.
if you see this and you're like "yes, finally some progress on the xt860!! Where do I donate???!?!!" You do that on Hashcodes website, it's ALL his hard work, I just basically wrote you a little story and pooled some files together. He really deserves it, he's working around the clock right now on cm9, seriously around the clock. Of course you can feel free to click the "Thank" button on this post if you like using my data patch
1./ Flash Brazil retail sbf from this thread
2./ root with Zerg from this thread. For some reason v3 kept tossing errors, v2 worked first try.
3./ install safestrap or whatever bootstrap (safestrap from Hashcodes site http://hash-of-codes.blogspot.com/
4./ profit (follow the directions to install a safestrap rom
boot recovery
Enable safestrap in options
Factory reset (formats data & cache)
Mounts > format system
Install your rom
Install my 3gfix
Reboot and profit
)
Again, my patch doesn't work on cm7 at the moment. Sorry Hashcode and everyone but I figured we'd be better off shooting for a known working rom. I'll update the post as I and other users test more roms. Thx thing on a spring for providing the patch "template", every time I threw one together and put it on my phone it turned out to be corrupt somehow so I just removed the files from your data fix and shoved in my own.
does it work with me863?
Thanks Willis I'll try that fix tonight. I'll try some of the other custom roms too see if any work. Probably give safestrap a whirl too

I gotta say after months of watching customs roms and dev for the xt862 this is pretty exciting. Does wifi data work on cm7? I would assume if the issue is just with apn. I know its not the intended purpose but I may use safestrap as a dual boot, run custom roms at home in safe mode and switch back to Brazil retail when I need 3g

This is awesome.
Great work guys. As soon as this gets a little more stable I'm going to flash it onto my gf's phone, work around these bugs that came in the stock FW.
Awesome. Been looking forward to this day. Not jumping on the train just yet, but I'm sure that once the 3G bug is ironed out, I'll be flashing.

From the bell rom? I have that at home if you need

Yeah, I tried that and the gsm data patch. I'm having trouble adding/editing apns etc, can't join networks because "Your SIM card does not allow a connection to this network" etc. This is with cm7 and liberty. I have liberty on my safestrap now, running. I can get sms, make calls etc, wifi works. I'll firgure the rest out. If I want to go back to stock for data or something I just turn safestrap off and do an advanced restore of my /data partition to my backup from after installing the brazil retail.
I can't seem to make this work willis, i adb pushed those files to /preinstall but i still get constant FC of com.android.phone the only thing that makes it not do that is removing the sim. i'm confused

I was gonna put together a flashable patch earlier but had some things come up and ended up in a hospital waiting room all night(next time I'll bring my laptop >.<). I'll toss it together asap and update the first post as long as I can flash it/it works. I should have mentioned (this is the confusing part) I pushed those files before enabling safestrap so /preinstall was /system if you get what I mean.
For CM7 to work correctly on GSM, I need to edit the init.mapphone_umts.rc file to setup all of the services the right way.
TBH, I never even looked twice at that file because I thought there wasn't anyone using it.
*blush*
Glad to see the XT860 crowd finally get some fun. )
Thanks Hashcode for putting so much effort into it, it's highly appreciated.
We were feeling a little bit left out.
Well, if you can get a version of CM7 working before I start having to study for exams, would be greatly appreciated.
But, if not, I'm sure I'll just divert time from studying to testing.

Changing your phone's firmware before exams is a bad thing... Trust me, I know Mine are starting next week!
Willis, I wondered if such was the case, I had safe system enabled and tried adb push to both /preinstall and /system as I wasn't sure how adb would recognize them in safe system. I also was pushing while in recovery

After the little bit of testing I've done over the last day or two with different custom roms it looks like we're(xt860 and me863 users I image) going to have to have (or really really want) a patch we can flash against any custom rom to get our data and sometimes maybe phone up(or to keep it from crashing). Haven't been able to get 3g up (though the 1 method I did not try was to crash the phone through the dev tools in cm7 as was mentioned in another thread) on any rom yet. Phone/text works right off the bat w/liberty, mavs etc etc.
Narrowed down why Safestrap Recovery would only boot if a USB cable was connected on the XT860; it had to do with a line in the init.rc file executed when booting into recovery:
Code:
write /dev/usb_device_mode msc_adb
As well as a line in the postbootrecovery.sh script which accomplishes essentially the same thing, except via an echo command.
Obviously, we could just comment those lines out, but then we're left without adb in recovery without messy changes each time we want it. So, I whipped up a little script that checks if there is a USB connection and if so, run the previous necessary commands to enable adb and if not, then leave them out. End result: Safestrap Recovery is working like a charm now. No more need to worry about tinkering with my phone without a computer nearby to get into the recovery...
I attached the modified recovery.zip, just replace the original one located at /system/etc/safestrap/recovery.zip with the attached one and you should be good to go.
Hey, I was updating my rogers captivate through the kies software from 2.2 to 2.3 and the software stopped at 34% for 2 hours...so I quit the program and unplugged my phone. When I reset the battery, and turned on my phone, there is a weird pc!phone icon and I cant get the phone to work. I am not sure what I should do now... I never rooted the phone or added any custom ROMs to it. And my 1 year warranty is up. Please help and thanks!
You are soft bricked. If none of the methods found here work to get in to dl mode you need a jig. Don't ever use kies.
i can get into dl mode, but i have no clue what to do with it :S
You can send it for warranty since it broke with kies (assuming you don't mod it). Or fix it yourself with ODIN.
is there a guide that I can follow to address this problem?
Nope, there are definitely no guides to help on this site.

Thanks for the links, but they didn't really help me with the problem because I wasn't able to follow some of the steps. I can't boot up my phone to put the rom inside the internal drive. I have basically the same problem as this guy http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1395437. I can go into download mode, but not recovery mode. May you give me a bit more of a guide on where I should start/follow? thanks!

holy fk!
seriously?!
did you bother reading those links?
not one of the 3 required any usage of putting a zip file on the phone, and every one of them is how to recover using download mode
SMFH.......
2. Find a neat-o ROM from Captivate Development Section and get it onto your internal SD card (the one you cant remove) download using phone internet browser or download and copy to phone using PC.
thats from the 3rd link... and the first link were just the ROMs for that...
The 2nd link is telling me to download this APN app(no clue what its for) from the market... I don't want to jump at any steps if I am unsure of any of them...

so what you are saying is that you are incapable of comprehending the DOWNLOAD mode and the ONE CLICKS to get you back to stock so that you could load a rom???
i mean, cmon, you have to learn how to educate yourself a little bit. nobody here is going to hold your fkng hand and spoonfeed you this info....
there is literally a PLETHORA of knowledge on these forums, all you have to do is learn and try to UNDERSTAND what it is telling you to do. Not just blindly follow some tutorial/walkthrough/video that doesnt explain WHAT you are doing.....
this site does not exist as support for stupidity or laziness. it is here to HELP people that are willing to HELP THEMSELVES.....
Don't know what is the big issue. You want to go to STOCK not flash a rom. Just follow the instruction of the 3rd link until step 10. Done finish stock. If its a 1 click its even easier. There are a ton of stickies. Flashing can screw up your phone if you don't know what you are doing.
Edit: PirateGhost beat me to it....
if i was a noob, and i just 'bricked' my phone doing something stupid, yes, i would panic. i would search google, which would bring me here to xda and i would search and figure out what i needed to do. this is because i do not need anyone holding my hand for anything. but before discounting anyone's assistance it would behoove me to do a little damn research and by the power of deduction realize what it is EXACTLY that i need to do.....
Okay, so I followed the 3rd guide and I am stuck on step 13 for the odin method. I cannot find a ROM inside Onix Recovery, so can I download any ROM and put it into the EXTERNAL sd card? or does it have to be inside the INTERNAL sd? because I cannot access the internal sd card. Also, is it normal for my phone to have the AT&T World Phone logo at boot? because I am from Rogers...and not AT&T. Will this affect my phone in the future? thanks
You just wanted stock WHY are you using recovery?

Hello all,
Okay, I'm a total noob when it comes to the LG Revo. I had my D1 and my DX and I worked it all out and had it setup and rooted just fine, but the LG and this OTA ZV8 update is killing me. So here is my dilemma.
First I don't get the lingo...clockworkmod (CWM) = boot screen/command screen, right...like dos kinda?
Second, flash? What is that is that where I hold power + volume down button to get boot/command/dos screen, when phone is powered off?
Okay now for the good crazy stuff. I had my Revo rooted, got the update, failed. Figured it was because the root was on it, so unrooted to push OTA update, still fail...is still epic failing and is getting on my last nerve, so badly I'm ready to throw my phone...and I've never wanted to that to my babies (phones). Anyway, unrooted still failing update.
Was on another forum where very nice guy gave me stuff to do, tried it however, when did the "Flash" it only wiped my phone and put it back to stock. Had phone plugged into computer via USB...tried to follow http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1583023 but after phone wiped didn't know what to do. This is where I am now, with a wiped phone and this has been since 9am pdt.
Hope this all makes since. Can anyone offer any help here? I'd like to get my Revo back up and running and I'd really love to get my apps back on so I can function.
Thanks for understanding and your help is greatly appreciated. Oh, please talk to me like I'm a noob lol...Or I won't get it, I promise I will do my best and try not to sound as dumb as I feel right now.
Thanks &
*Edit* I forgot, I read somewhere that in order to use CWM the phone had to be rooted so I couldn't've flashed to it anyway? Is that wrong information?
The reason why your update fails is because you haven't taken off CWM I'd point you in the right direction but I'm doing this by phone

I wish I could explain how I did it. I thought I updates to V8 with no root and was really mad but then somehow I had root.

Guess what...phone has not tried to update since I wiped it. Running fine though. Uh...have only tried to push update manually once. Had guy here try to help me but we got lost with the zv7 it wouldn't let me upload from the site linked here. As I'm running 2.2.2. He said I needed to be on zv7 before I could get to zv7. Anyway all is okay so far will try this again this weekend.

Ok... here is what you do to get root. Follow that thread and install the v8 tot.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1337386
After the lgpnst program completes (around 20min) successfully you will be running the latest v8.
Once that is done. Connect your phone set the usb to internet and turn on debugging from the settings | applications | development section and then follow this the instructions in this thread. Unzip the file and run the bat file and follow the directions in the command window.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1621625
As for clockwork mod (which a basically is a program that can be run before android loads that allows you to make low level system changes, when you make these changes it is called flashing) I am not running it on my phone but I am sure someone here can tell you how to put it on your phone running v8 rooted.
Here are the instructions for getting ClockWork Mod onto your phone with rooted v8 (located at the bottom of page 2)

Hello, followed the instructions all the way to:
10. Right Click "VS910.dll" and click on Install/Register.
Note: DLL WILL NOT INSTALL UNLESS COMPONENTS AND GENERICMODELS PLUG-INS ARE INSTALLED!!!
IF YOU CANNOT INSTALL IT ON A RIGHT CLICK GO TO "C:\Windows\System32" and drag the VS910.dll on "regsvr32" and it should install.
It won't VS910.dll dragged onto "regsvr32" will NOT install. I get an error message:
The module "C:\LG Electronics\LGNPST\VS910.dll" was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80020009.

Typed "." with both just the dot and then again with the quotes and nothing. According to my computer the file is on C:\ but I can't find it in LGNPST there. And it's not in any of my other files that I can see.
I think I did something wrong...But I followed it exact. Becoming very disconcerted with my Revo.
At that point you should explore into the directory where you put the .tot file. Copy the location, go back to the LG tool and paste the directory location. It should allow you to open the file. If you have any problems please respond.

Ok, so moving along on this lol...I've followed all of the instructions. Downloaded, uploaded, installed, copied, pasted, created new folders, dragged and dropped everything it told me to do.
This file "C:/VS910ZV4_04.S4_04.P58008.R5.user.tot.bin" is only showing up in my computer as a shortcut, not as a file. This is after researching and finding it on my computer. Did I do something wrong? Am I downloading an incorrect file? I'm not sure where this particular file came from as, everything else is as described in the "how to" threat.
I think I may have figured it out. Will get back to you. Thanks again!!
*EDIT* Was told to use VS910ZV7_10.S7_10.P58008.R5.tot ... did...it updated...now to see what to do next. That other was was ZV4 and the one I just updated to is ZV7... woot wish me luck...manually pushed zv8 update...no failure this time...it was successful. yay!
