this is a better guide for rooting, modding and flashing.
For basic info, the one you posted is better.

Thnks for the reply dude .. Can I directly go to point G and H ? Does this phone has an unlocked bootloader ??
Is there any way to go back to original stock fw ?

Yes you can go back to original stock ROM any time by flashing via Odin
Sent from galaxy ace running S3 beta 3.1 evolution

You can go directly to steps G and H after rooting. Step C is for flashing the stock firmware, thats our safety net, whenever things go wrong, we flash stock firmware via Odin and the device becomes brand new.
There is no bootloader issue here, you can directly install custom recovery and get flashing. Just stay away from the ROM Manager app, its incompatible with this phone.

Simple Guide for getting Cyanogenmod working
Hey
I got this phone a while ago and can share my experience on it with you.
first off: DON'T TOUCH ROM MANAGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!1!!!!!!!!
I have seen too many people go down the bricking route to sit and watch another person go down that route...
Anyway, why dont you flash CM 7.2.0 cooper? Ive been using it for a month now and its great! Its the latest stable release, i didnt want to go any higher since I don't have the cash for a new phone, and have no use for a paperweight its quite simple really,
1: download cooper (i havent posted 10 yet so take away spaces) [get. cm / get / 2K8]
2: download CMW recovery (attached: couldnt find file I have online)
3: put the files in your sd root
4: boot into recovery (power+home)
5: install CMW recovery by clicking on (with home button) apply update from sd card and locate the zip file
6: reboot again into recovery (now CMW recovery)
6.1: (OPTIONAL, but recommended) make a full backup under backup and restore
7: Wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition and in advanced, wipe dalvik cache
8: install zip from sd, pick the cyanogenmod zip and apply. HAVE FUN
Just ask if there is anything I can help you with
NOTE TO SENIOR MEMBERS AND THE LIKE: I know there is an official thread on this but he made a post on being new to the phone and I'm trying to help...

Stuck On boot screen after flashing cm10 (I'm a noob)

Hey pros …
I just flash cm10 rom and stuck on cm10 boot screen.
1. Flash abyss kernel 4.2
2. Flash cm10 rom and JB GAPP
3. Reboot and stuck on boot screen
4. Try to get into CWM by using button combo but it won't get me into CWM and it straight go to boot screen
I SERIOUSLY NEED HELP !!!!!!!
Can anyone help me Galaxy note is the best phone I ever had I don't want to lose it pls help me pls ……
Normally you can fix this by doing a wipe/factory reset in CWM but since you cannot enter CWM i dont know.
If u really cannot get into CWM maybe its best to start over.
Flash the CM9 kernel with odin and try to enter CWM after that and flash CM10+gapps again. (dont forget to do the wipe/factory reset)
It should boot without probs.

You flashed a bleeding edge rom without even reading the 1st Page containing the instructions. What's the point of doing instructions if they aren't used. Go back and read and preferably stay on stock until you understand what you are doing
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
You need to flash cm based roms from cm base which is best to flash from gb rom. Which version were you trying to install?
If you can get into download mode, flash a root able gb rom and root, add cwm, then flash cm10

I had exactly the same problem earlier tonight... CM10 completely nuked my phone, couldn't boot into recovery or anything...
working on getting it back now using a stock GB Rom and Odin (PC) as i could still access download mode... hopefully can recover that way, fingers crossed...
not sure what the problem is, but i'm staying away from CM10 previews until all the bugs are sorted out now...

That's why when you are a noob and have never flashed any custom rom on your device, the best way to avoid a brick and to come here later looking for help when your phone is bricked is to read the ENTIRE thread even if it is 50 pages long! There will also be people who have bricked their phone on the rom's main thread and you will learn a lot by reading everything!

well... That's total Bulls**t
I no expert nor noob, I was.
but reading 50 pages ? total crap
I never do that, there is google, you can almost always find a short answer.
as far as I know, he didn't do anything wrong. I did the same, it work, he did it, it didn't work. guess what, the 50 pages didn't help at all.
the 50 pages can help as last option. or not.
Flashing CM ROM must come from untampered CM nightly not TW-based ROM
1- Use PC Odin to flash stock firmware - preferably Gingerbread (we all know ICS issues)
2- Reboot the phone, let the ROM start & check if u still have root
3- If not : Re-root your phone, Please check Drketan threads for rooting directions
4- When rooted : Reboot into recovery
5- Do full wipe (data - cache - dalvik) 3 times in a row
6- Do System format - go to advanced & choose Format /system
7- Now flash a stable CM base.. I prefer using the latest CM10 nightly (not CM-based ROM)
8- Now without rebooting, flash your preferred CM-based ROM.. I use PA by Utacka
9- Flash Gapps (if your ROM doesn't have them included.. plz read original post (OP) of the corresponding ROM)
10- Re-clean Cache & Dalvick .. only once
11- Reboot & Enjoy
I totally agree with Final5K.. I still read the instructions carefully, I even read some threads backwards to know the issues with the build and perhaps the fixes.. Unless, you would like to superbrick your phone.. that's up to you
CM roms are cmpletely ok. usually the op says to do factory reset after flashing rom before booting or it will get stuck on logo.

[Q] Galaxy note N7000 root fail...HELP!!!

Im a total novice when it comes to rooting. i did manage to root my N7000, but after a few hours my phone became quite muggy...i rebooted it and on reboot it said "upgrading".
Since then it has been unusable, i did the volume up/home/power button and tried a wipe data....phone still wont respond well. keyboard doesn't work, cant get a signal, and its generally so groggy, its pretty much unusable. i managed a factory reset with phone switched on, still no better.
any help would be massively appriciated

Relax mate! Am guessing a simple flashing of the stock firmware will solve ur issue.

Ok ..
First of all if you have properly rooted your android device with (clockwordmod recovery) or any other recoveries etc you need to have a Rom to flash it through this recovery
It is recommend that you must have safe kernel before flashing any ROM. Please download any of CM10.1 ROM from the link below
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1789397
Now Get the ROM for your appropriate device from the link below. Select the device and download the ROM. Use any Stable or Nightly version.
http://www.cyanogenmod.org/
Next thing you need to download Google Apps package called GAPPS. Its latest version corresponding to CM10.1 android version 4.2.2 is on the top of the screen. (20130301) using link below
http://goo.im/gapps
Put all the files to micro SD Card. Since your operating system is not working so you may have to take out SD card and put these downloaded zip files to SD card using jacket or your laptop SD card slot.
Now Switch ON your android device to Recovery Mode by Holding Volume Up+ Power and Home Button together
Do following:-
Wipe data/Factory reset.
Wipe Cache.
Wipe Delvik Cache in Advanced Options ..
Fix permissions.
then go to your SD card and flash all these files in order
Flash the Kernel first and after flashing Reboot Your Recovery.
Now Flash
1. CM 10.1
2. GAPPS
Reboot .. n enjoy your new rooted phone
If you still face difficulty let me know ..

Although i haven't reached the 'recovery mode' part yet, i can tell you that the only options are:
reboot system now
apply update for external storage
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
the delvik cache & fix permissions are not options
Adam
Here ur options
Two options with you
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
Download clockword mod recovery from here.
Again I recommend using Chasmado Kernel and it will automatically install safe recovery files. TWRC or CMD Recovery

Galaxy S i9000 update

Hi all,
I'm still using my Galaxy S on Froyo and don't feel I need to upgrade to a new handset yet but I would like some advice on rooting and getting my phone updated to the latest and greatest F/W (Custom or standard) so that I can get the best out of my phone and give it a new lease of life. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I've already used Odin a while ago to update from Eclair to Froyo so I've had a bit of experience with this apart from rooting and loading custom ROM's Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks for that. What is CM9? Will I need to root first?
I've just attempted rooting. Does this result from Odin look normal?
Hey, Tox. Thanks for the advice. Why CM9? There are later versions, is CM9 the most stable? I'd like to try Slim Bean. Do I need to install that CM9 before I attempt to put Slim Bean on? Also, will I need any other files/apps? I've checked that my i9000 is rooted ok by doing an su in a terminal emulator.
Could anybody point me to a straight forward tutorial which could help me from where I'm currently at?
I've now installed clockworkmod recovery and created a backup to the SD card in recovery mode. I'm guessing the next steps should be pretty straight forward. I just need to know which files I have to download. What's the best Slim Bean for me to try and what other apps should I install with it?
Ok, I've screwed up. I installed clockworkmod recovery and created a backup. I tried flashing the latest Slim Bean ROM and addon pak but my phone wouldn't connect to the cell network. I attempted to recover from the backup using CWM but my phone is now stuck in a bootloop with the Samsung splash screen. Can anybody help me please?

you lost your IMEI , that's why i told you to flash CM9 first , to avoid loosing IMEI ,
reflash 2.3.6 firmware via odin , root it , flash CM9 , then flash slim bean rom
Thanks. I've just flashed 2.3.6 again and then applied CWM recovery but it still boot loops. Do you know why I couldn't just restore from the backup I'd created?
How can I flash the CM9 pack with Odin? It's a ZIP folder and wont recognise it. Please help.
Is there any other way around this? I've just installed SB again with the addon pack just so that I could get the CM9 onto my SD card. What's the best way to sort this out and get my IMEI number sorted?
Can anyone help me at all?? I have the IMEI number in the back of the phone if that's any use?

this how to install cm 9
Put it ( zip file ) to your phone's internal sd-card
Reboot to recovery (vol up + home + power)
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache
Advanced > wipe dalvik cache
Install zip from sd-card
Choose zip from sd-card
Select cm-9.0.0-galaxysmtd.zip
Confirm
Wait
Go back
Reboot
the same you way you do with a JB rom
and please push thanks button ,
Thanks for the reply T. So should I do a full wipe (Wipe data/factory reset Wipe cache Advanced > wipe dalvik cache) before installing 2.3.6, then apply the CWM update followed by your instructions above? Will that recover my IMEI because, as you said, it's definitely no longer there.
I've just wiped everything and installed GB 2.3.6 and got the following messages. Does this look ok? Also, after I'd done that, I rooted it with CWM then tried installing the latest stable CM10 but now when I reboot, it shows the CM/Samsung screen as if it was booting then it just goes back to the CWM recovery What do I do now??
Success!
I've just powered up my phone again and suddenly the Cyanogen startup screen appeared! I powered down and put the SIM back in from my backup phone and I'm back on the phone network. I was reading up on lots of other complicated ways of recovering the IMEI and this has been really straight forward. I'm liking the Cyanogen 10.1.2 so far so might stick with that. Thanks so much for your help TT!
So to answer a few of your questions, I know I'm late to the party but for future reference
-The reason why Tox recommended flashing CM9 first is because problems can occur going straight from 2.3.6 to Jelly Bean in terms of your IMEI- your device's "identification". If you lose the IMEI, you lose the ability to connect to your network provider. Flashing CM9 and letting it boot as an intermediate step prevents this from happening. Once you've booted CM9 when you flash and you have reception, you're all goods to flash any JB rom from there.
-Your bootloop from recovering the backup that you made from Slim- I'm guessing it was a backup from 2.3.6- has nothing to do with the IMEI. Phones can boot without the IMEI. Its because the data partitions in 2.3.6 are different to those in Jelly Bean. Hence they're incompatible with each other- you tried to restore a different data partition that what was available on Slim Bean (because it was Jelly Bean).
-Flashing any 2.3.6 rom will restore your IMEI. However regarding the photo you took with the red error messages...
-That's because of the reason I mentioned above, with the data partitions. Because they're different, the phone can't recognise them and so can't boot, hence resulting in a bootloop. Easy way to fix this- there's a file called dbsdata.rfs.tar (its somewhere in these forums, right now I can't find a link). If you get that situation again, just pul the battery and reinsert it, go back into download mode, put dbsdata.rfs.tar in PDA, let it flash. That should put the right data partition on the phone.
Hope that these clarified some of your questions!

I think I still need to apply some add-on's for this CM10.1.2 build as I don't have market place, google, FB etc.

Re-installing OS -- Help Needed

Hello,
I am on latest stock firmware, and want to completely erase my phone and install a fresh copy of latest OS.
Now, I am not at all feeling comfortable in flashing myself as I am having limited knowledge and I fear I will end up screwing phone.
If I visit Samsung service center, they just reset the phone... when told to install fresh copy of OS.
So, what to tell them so they understand that I want all old OS related things to be deleted and install a fresh copy of OS. Also what I have to see to make sure they are indeed doing what I am saying... what will screen display ?
Sum pointers plz.

Pointers:
1. Install a philz kernel.
2. Wipe all the partitions after that.
3. Download the stock firmware from sammobile.com or Dr Ketans thread from XDA (this thread also has instructions/how-to for how to flash using odin)
4. Use odin to flash stock rom in download mode.
Before you proceed and make any mistake read about all the above and understand the risk associated.
LOL. ok ill try not to laugh
goto settings about phone. check your version ... there may not be a update.
restart your phone "hold volume up and the menu button" when u get to factory recovery. use the "wipe/factory reset" that is as close as your going to get, (without using a custom rom). once done. u can goto the same "settings / about phone" and check "software update". if there is an update, you can download and apply it from there.
also check you have enough battery life before doing this.

Cant I just go to settings and under backuo & reset --> factory data reset.
Is the this the same as the method u suggested above ?
First of all make sure wat u want to do, if updated stock firmware is wat u want then reset your phone and then update it if there is any.. this is the safe mode.
Now the other option u got is root it, install cmw, install kernel, n lastly custom ROM it will allow you to change CPU frequency and much more.. choose any custom ROM its olwAys better in the most criterias. But if you wanna stick to the stock ROM. . Just reset it.

yes, almost the same, except. none of the files will be in use. if you use the restart method.
actually i think if you do the FACTORY reset from the phone while its booted. it will just restart and do the same "recovery" method? right?
sorry been a while since i did booted WIPE.
@ sushantp606
judging from the responses and stuff here. I am thinking this user is not at the stage to consider the stuff you posted, they are only after a basic wipe and update of the rom.
The problem is everybody always speak abt wipe... I don't wana wipe, I wana install fresh clean copy of latest official OS.

[Q] stucked after a fail with odin

Hi everybody,
just got an old yet effective SGS and I wanted root and get rid of touchwizz and all the crap from my carrier
I was unable to boot into DL mode, i tried everything, so I had to do it with adb reboot
I never had to use Odin to do my hacking with android so i'm not used to it but short story : I rename my rom.zip into rom rom.tar, it failed and all I have is this now :
https://www.dropbox.com/s/wk42jbmp33a3ftu/IMG_20140715_152917.jpg
Also I need to unsimlock, flashing a new rom will also do the trick right ?
thanks
What you just did is bricking your phone. It it was a zip file you need to install it from the recovery. Renaming it is not the way it works. I'm not sure if now you can fix it. Sorry, man

Do you know what I can at least try?
If you can get into download mode:
Follow sections 2 and 3 in this guide.
If you can't:
Follow this guide and after that do what I sails to do if you have download mode.
Does 3-button-combo not work to get into the download mode?
(power & home & volume down)
tetakpatalked from Nexus 7 flo
so i tried the resistance thing but i was unable to find all of the part required so i bought one of these already done solution thingy
It worked, I'm now able to boot into DL mode
I also succesfully install a random 2.x rom from an unknown european carrier, no root, lots of crap installed, and simlocked
How do i get from that to my CM 11 rom ? (this time it's in .tar format via 7zip ^^')
I tried via Odin in PDA it says fail right away
what can I do ?
thanks fr all the answers guys
@Idealith simlock has nothing to do with the firmware.
You need now any root kernel for that firmware, it has to be compatible with the intiframs of your 2.x version and it will give you a custom recovery.
There you can flash first CM10.2 to get the modified partition sizes and KK ready recovery and after that you can flash CM11
IMHO, the new Mackay ICS 2014 rom based on CM9 is a lot faster than any KitKat and works better on the i9000
tetakpatalked from N7100
my question about the rom still applies cause this one is awful
but with what does it have to do then ?
EDIT : my browser didn't render the end of your answer
I'm afraid i'm not following though :/
I got my 2.3 rom to stop crashing
and I once boot into recovery mod idk how ..
I selected the 10.2 CM rom but it started rebooting over and over again
I'm really not following everything that is happening over here :/

It was perfectly normal behavior, as after flashing the zip from CM, it will in firat step upgrade your recovery to TWRP 2.2.2.0
As you have wiped already before, it would be perfectly fine to just flash the rom.zip in the new TWRP recovery, and your gapps right afterwards. The recovery upgrade is totally common on the i9000 as first step.
The i9000 can easily be unbricked by flashing a stock image with Odin.

I suppose my phone has been unbricked I made a 2.3 stock rom work
What i do now :
I flash the stock rom, go back to DL mode, flash the recovery, take the battery off, boot back in recovery, wipe everything ( do I really have to wipe system and all ?), select the ROM, nd once I'm in TWRP i reselect than same ROM
for the cm9 based mackay one it keep rebooting over and over again
for CM 10.2 it says the encryption failed and I need to factory reset, then nothing works

Yes, that would be correct procedure. To install CM9 you will have to format data, cache and dalvik cache.
If you have never had a JVU or JVZ firmware installed, it is likely that you still have a Froyo bootloader which could be reason of the problems with Android 4.xx

Either by flashing a whole JVU or JVZ stock firmware, or by flashing a bootloader only.
Check my sticky thread here under the same section (help & troubleshooting), I have described whole the procedure in the OP. I have even attached the files and also video is there: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2444308
Right point would be to do it first.

Ask your carrier, I assume the phone contract isn't new anymore (or expired) so you'll get unlock code for free. Here in Europe one can obtain the unlock code after 2 years for free.
Otherwise you can ask one of the online unlock services, it costs usually around 15-20$ to get the code

so i tried the resistance thing but i was unable to find all of the part required so i bought one of these already done solution thingy
