so do we need a custom kernel for this or can this not be done ?
the place where I want to connect to Wifi is a ad hoc connection. I'm going off the fact that laptops can connect but droid x doesn't connect to this wifi. This is in a wifi enabled bus.
I connect to Adhoc at work. Takes a couple of tries but it works.
BTW the only encryption mode allowed is WEP

I have a samsung tab with gingerbread 2.3.3 rooted and with wpa replaced.
I would like to sharing my notebook internet connection with my tab using wifi ad hoc network.
These are my settings:

Subnet : 255.255.255.0
Tab:
Static IP: 192.168.0.3
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1

Recently I flashed Virtuous Quattro Beta 9 (an ICS rom) on my Incredible S and I found it can't find ad-hoc hotspot.
I googled it and found a tool called ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher. I tried it but failed. Then I found a patched wpa_supplicant and I put it on system/bin instead of the original file. Then it can find ad-hoc hotspots but can not connect to it (It doesn't connect it when pressed connect button).
Are there any method to connect to ad-hoc hotspots on ICS? Thanks for your patience.
There is a large thread here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1438297 that deals with this concern, primarily concerning the ASUS Transformer Prime, but overall with ICS and tethering to AD Hoc.
In summary of this 30 plus page forum, Android 4.0 ICS does not have the built in ability to connect to Ad Hoc networks. The wpa_supplicant file you found was not built for ICS so it only allows you to see the Ad Hoc network and does not allow you to fully connect to the Ad Hoc network. There are programs/apps on the Andriod market that potentially allow you to connect to Ad Hoc, but you have to have root access on your tablet. The Transformer Prime owners do not have root access so we are at a standstill, till it is resolved from developers, Asus or Google.
Hope this helps.
I tried every thing but I am not able to reverse tether my wifi using ubuntu to my phone. I am using Nightly CM9 A99 with CK 0.4d kernel.

I have found this file that make ad hoc network working, but disable all others wifi network
I think you can only connect to one wifi network at one time.
(though I haven't tried to connect to to 2 network simultaneously)

Click to collapse
That would be really cool, connect to two wifis at the same time!
Of course, Ad Hoc Network is the Peer to Peer Network and only allow 1 client at 1 time.
They not allow multiple clients to connect, not like AP.
