Ruined My Phone? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My friend told me to do a software upgrade on my phone so I followed some of his instructions. First off, I managed to use ODIN to reset the phone and I have installed a version of Honeycomb onto the phone. Now, I could easily swap back to Gingerbread, but I have two issues. When I can get the phone to start, it looks like a tablet! Everything is small, and when I connect my USB to my computer to put something onto the internal SD it won't actually open up in my computer? Secondly, it's now not even starting up into the phone, it's stuck on a black screen with a light blue ANDROID logo just pulsating. It won't go further.
Any help?
I now know not to trust my mates. Heh.

Which phone do you have? Honeycomb is for tablets and you flashed it on a phone. Luck for you that you didn't brick your device.

First visit My Android Solutions, link below...do the first step . Than visit My Android Collections ( link below) and use a i9000 rescue kit to recover

I'm having issues understanding your tutorial. I've tried powering it down and removing all of the components and restarting after 30 seconds but still no luck.
Yeah, I downloaded and installed HoneyComb which is a tablet software. It looks like a tablet. But right now, all I get on start up is a flashing "ANDROID" icon, it won't go any further.
I'm sure I've ruined it.

Nope, you had messed it up, but its still recoverable by going into download mode and flashing a stock ROM with PIT, use the i9000 rescue kit from My android collection link below , and use the WIKI to get better understanding of your phone

Trouble with Captivate.

So, recently i bought a samsung captivate, switched over from iphone and i am pretty familiar with jailbreaking iphones and able to do that. however when it comes to android phones and rooting im lost.
okay, the captivate i got from a dude off craigslist, and he said it was suped up and extra fast and rooted. i thought okay well that sounds like a great deal let me check it out. however, homie didnt tell me that he took off the original captivate software and now i have an at&t samsung captivate running on galaxy 19000 and not the original software. I am not able to find anywhere instructions on how to put the original software on the phone and get it back it the brand new factory default. I am not sure if i unroot it would that take the 19000 galaxy Os off and then the original would come back? or do i need to download the original? i cant even find that ive looked all over samsungs website.
Like i said i am pretty good with messing around with iphones and im sure if i just got a step by step instruction on how to fix my issue i could do it i just need some help from someone who knows how and where to find the tools i need to do it. I really appericiate any help you can offer. Thanks!
Phil
You can get back to stock, but the i9000 roms are much better then stock. It is likely if you like to play with your phone that you would end up flashing in no time.
What rom are you on
Settings, about phone, bottom
Find the galaxy s (not captivate drivers), then use odin 1 click downloader to revert to stock.
Step 1: install drivers
Step 2: got to download mode. Easiest way is to turn off phone, remove sim and battery, put battery back in, then hold vol up and down buttons while inserting usb. If you get a yellow android symbol that is shoveling, you're golden.
Step 3: use the odin 1 click to revert to stock. On the odin screen, you should see a com port light up and at the bottom "added". If your device is in downolad mode click start.
Step 4: set your phone down, don't touch anything, and watch the magic.
Step 5: (optional) donate to design gears, the person who will have really saved your butt.
u can try this single post if u wan to reflash to original rom..
it got everyting inside.

Check out this thread. Also check let us know what rom you are on using the instructions some one posted above.

[Q] Bricked And JIG is not helping

HI,
I am from INDIA, few months back I got a Samsung Captivate , Till now i tried FIREFLY and CM7 ROMs . The first time flash i did it with ODIN i guess i did it with a wrong firmware ,So was stuck with AT&T screen boot loop issue. Searching the forums and found JIG may help and so made a JIG (as i can't get one here) . and recovered my phone and flashed stock and then FIREFLY and 2 weeks back i flashed CM7 for getting Gingerbread and not likeing the UI of the ROM tried to switch back to stock and then customize on my own.
So When i tried flashing Stock the installation was success the screen stuck few moments on AT&T logo and i thought it would go off, But as i was very eager to get my phone online again i pulled of the battery to restart manually (Which i dont think was nice idea ) Now the screen remains black even i use the JIG to get into download mode. But the phone heats UP when i plug it for charging on computer or directly to switch
HELP NEEDED as i am very addicted to this PHONE
I have the same issue. I was tryint to load Cognition and it just gets stuck on the ATT screen but I haven't tried a jig yet. I was wondering if I can replace the files on the phone with good files that aren't corrupted and see if it boots up because droid explorere can still pick up the phone and so does Odin but when I do a master reset nothing happens.
@rajasekhar - Have you tried: Removing all parts (battery, sim, sd) let it sit for a few min (my preference is around 10 min to insure no residual power is left in the system) then hold the jig in place and putting the battery back in? Keeping the jig in place, so that as soon as the device gets power it is immediately seeing the jig, before it can try any other processes.
A bit difficult to do with hand made jigs I know. If you still getting nothing then your in for the worst and the phone need a JTAG or service center visit.
Tho it sounds a little odd that it could boot up to seeing the AT&T logo, but does not respond to the jig. Might even be a hardware problem.
@i3oots - Since you say your still getting PC response your safe to try and reflash it or just pick something different altogether. Tho you might wanna let ODIN settle and just sit there doing nothing for a few min, w/o then w/ the phone plugged in. Or learn about Heimdall and go that route.
Would I be able to flash it even though it get's stuck on the ATT screen? It won't go into download mode. I'll look on the forums how to flash it too. I'm a newb at this which is why I bricked it but everyone has to start somewhere lol.

You have probably Hard Bricked your phone. A JIG will not work to recover the phone. If the phone has any life at all, then the JIG will work. Else, u hard bricked it...you should never remove the usb cable when flashing bootloaders or odin or anything!
the only solution is to get a JTAG which can recover hard bricks OR you can go to a warranty store (don't know about india) and make up a sob story and have them replace it..

Does your computer recognize the phone? If odin is open, does the box turn yellow when you connect your phone? Make sure you have the right drivers. I think cm7 and captivate drivers are different. Keep trying with the jig. Just because you can't see anything on the screen doesn't mean the phone is dead.

If your phone is booting up far enough to send out USB info for ODIN and other PC programs to see it, then your still in a workable condition. This also means you can still get into download mode, but since things arn't working properly it will be harder. Depending on which bootloaders your phone has will direct which methods you'll have to try out to get into download mode.
AFTER you've had a chance to look around the forum and self-educate on the different ways of getting into download mode. If your still having problems give us a lil more info of what you were running before the flash and to which version of Cog you were trying to flash.
Did anything worked for you, if not only a jtag can help you looks like u hard bricked the phone.
Hi guys
@DaNarki : Yea i tried that method to .
Thanx for ur suggestions guys .I really squeezed through xda for all possible ways of unbricking but no use. SO thought JTAG was the only option. But wanna know more about JTAG???????
Went for a samsung service centre they said they wont handle other country products of samsung. Just yesterday went to the local Cell phone Repair store , He said like he would try using a Ctool box they have for installin onto the rom directly. So i thought why not Give a shot to it ...
That store guy raised another question in me . Yesterday after giving it in the morning he said to call in the evening . I did so and he said the Phone is booting on the Ctool but it is sometimes throwing error . I dint get his intention in saying so . have to go to him today
bricked maybe not
I thought I was bricked also ...HARD BRICKED......no buttons no nothing ...tried odin on, phone plugged in, and hold down volume up and down and reinstall batt......nothing worked.......but this... it worked for me........ok first of all remember this will be a bit tricky because you will have to keep the volume keys pressed the whole time till you have download mode......should also have full batt......take out the sim and any flash cards you may have in the phone and the batt.....set the phone down and watch a couple hours of tv or try to brick your buddies phone so he can feel your pain...lol something.....ok now after your tv show has gone off turn on your computer and start up odin one click to stock.... put just the batt in the phone.....if your friend is still there you should try this with 100% batt.... use his phone to charge your batt.....any way put the batt in the phone....plug the usb cable into your computer......now for the tricky part .......press down the volume up and down now and do not let them go till the end of this and you should have download mode.......now plug in the usb to your phone IF YOU HAPPEN TO GET DL MODE HERE THEN GO AHEAD AND LET GO OF THE VOLUME BUTTONS AND FLASH YOUR PHONE ....if not... KEEP THE BUTTONS PRESSED.......now take the batt out of the phone.....keep them pressed......unplug your usb cable......keep them pressed.... restart odin...... keep them pressed....plug your usb cable back in.......keep them pressed... re-install the batt.....you should get download mode.......remember you have to keep them pressed... JUST... the volume up and down pressed through the whole process nothing else....This worked for me and I was dead bricked no nothing from any of the keys no nothing..... I DIDNT INVENT THIS METHOD I READ IT ON HERE SOMEWHERE AND CANT FIND IT AGAIN......It did work for me when nothing else did.....so if the person that posted it reads this THANK YOU...... ................................................. If you just wanna know a bit about the process ask this guy. He is pretty much the only person in the US (I know not all to useful to a person in India) that does JTAG for the cappy.
I can tell you this much, it requires a special device called a Riff box and it sends boot info directly to the chip on the main/mother board that is used for the booting process.
Somewhere I've seen a site that listed info of ppl around the world that will JTAG, but I can't seem to find it right now.

Hope it helps I wish I could find the original post again to thank the guy that told me how to do it. I had sent that phone back to att and the promptly sent it back and told me the water dammage sticker in the bat compartment was missing and they wanted to charge me 409 bucks for the phone ....long story short it was there when I sent it and I told them to go pound sand up their ass because I wasnt paying them that much and ended up paying 125 bucks for a paper weight. So that is when I decided to have it jtaged but figured I would give it one more shot before mailing it off. Thinking this might have where the whole thing went wrong and made the cell dead .

Any chances of resurrecting my Galaxy Tab?

Ok! I bought a Samsung P1000N Galaxy Tab from ClaroPR this week. Like always with every android devices i have i rooted it with superoneclick. Yesterday i was trying to update the tablet to gingerbread since it had Froyo. Follow the tutorials in here to flash it(I guess i didnt read the warnings about the secure bootloaders or something like that) but the thing is that i ended up softbricking my device. The gingerbread i was trying to flash was the JQ1. Anyways, i tried to flash it using Odin 1.7, it ended up failing and now i just have the cell triangle and computer logo of dead on the screen. Thing is that i know its not supposed to be totally bricked. But then in the device manager it doesnt show as samsung composite device or anything like that. I need help from someone who has gone thru this already and knows what to do. Or is it just a brick and thats it? Thanks...

If you get anything on the screen at all (Triangle, Download mode, Samsung logo, etc...) It's not bricked, just sponged. Unfortunately I don't have any experience with the P1000N, but in general, try reloading the samsung drivers and try another USB port. Once you get it to show up in device mangler you can push the right tar with Odin and you'll be cooking with gas again. Sorry I can't help with this specific model, but sammy devices in general are hard to truly "brick"
Okay i think now its dead. It turned off when it lost the charge and now not even Heimdall recognize it. So if someone knows about a good tutorial on Jtaging this i will appreciate.
Edit: Found useful guide in here to resurrect it so i will give that a try...
The Unbrickable Mod works like a champ! I know, because I had to resort to this over this last weekend.
However, it does require mods to the mainboard that require some skill. Once accomplished, it is virtually impossible to brick your Tab.

Why you want to go for Jtag just becoz battery is dead. Get the Tab Opened, Recharge the battery externally (Repair/Service Center should help). Follow the Team Overcome Guide to install the Stock Safe Rom and then you can either continue with it or move to any other ROM of your choice.
I would keep JTAG as the Last option.
If it's new Tab, it should still be under warranty.
wow, impressive post (the unbrickable mod).. Not sure I'd have the guts to do that though..

[Q] One Click Unbrick questions

I have done the unfortunate thing and bricked my phone, now I did see a post in here on this subject but I am not able to open this program/app on either Ubuntu or Windows 7 PC's.
Now my questions...
Is this the only way to unbrick my phone?
Using Linux or Windows, which one works better?
I am using the Rogers one i896, the screen just stays at i896. I will explain what I was trying to do, I had installed Clockworkmod on my rooted phone on the intentions to install another ROM on my phone. I boycotted this idea as I saw another way that had me download the zip, enable debugging, turnoff and place into recovery mode...that is where I got stuck. I obviously made a mistake somewhere, does anyone have any ideas how to unbrick my phone. Not too make it sound worse but I have to use my wife's old Blackberry...a pink flip!
Linux works better. After dl, right click, permissions, check the little box that says make it executable. Click ok. Now right click on it, open with java (either open jdk, or sun java ). The app should open.
Thanks very much, I was now able to install on Linux but after all this the unbrick did not work. It tells me to plug my phone in, the phone is in the USB port it has always been in. I turned the phone in the off position and all it does is show a load symbol similar to the one before the battery charge comes on, when it goes on it just stops at the i896 screen and does nothing else. Any other ideas on how to unbrick this phone? or am I done and got to get a new one? I'd rather keep this one
Ok not to say nothing is working, but I have a yellow triangle with Android digging, says downloading below and at the bottom do not turn off target!!! What does this mean?

Plug it into the computer and hit the button.
I tried that but my pc doesnt pickup my Samsung anymore, it is like it doesnt exist when I plug in. I am gonna reboot the PC and retry.
Are you using a Linux machine?
yes I am I have Ubuntu 11.10 installed, I never had this trouble before with it recognizing the phone.
If you can get download mode, flash back to stock.
It goes into download mode but not sure how to flash to stock
There is a sticky in the development section for stock ROM.

Thanks guys, I have read the instructions and all is fine except that I am using Rogers version i896, if it doesn't make any difference then I will load the AT&T if there would be issues. Second issue I am running into is while my phone goes into download mode, my PC's continue to not see my phone, I have removed everything including the SD card. Any ideas how to get the phone to be recognized as I think this would solve a lot
My friend recently had similar problems and it turned out to be a bad cable. Don't overlook the obvious.

[Q] Old AT&T loop, but wait, there's more!

So I watched the I'm a noob video before signing up and I did the research but I couldn't come up with a clear answer for myself.
Problem: Flashed wrong image on my phone using ODIN OCD after getting stuck in Semaphore boot logo
Symptom: AT&T World Phone Logo keeps flashing, phone goes dead when connecting to USB
Things I tried:
-3 Button download mode: doesn't do squat
-2 Volume button + power button: AT&T logo laughs in my face
-Installed ADB but I can't make a connection to the phone at all since it plays possum once I connect the USB cable
Previous history:
All I wanted was a working microphone....
I got an old S I9000 from my sister, she said the microphone wasn't working and it would power down by itself. I did a factory reset but the phone would still turn off and the mic still wasn't working. I took the thing apart and saw the battery leaked and left some nice green residue on the power connectors which I then cleaned. Then I tried cleaning the microphone but it still wasn't working so I ordered the whole home button + vibrator + microphone thingy on ebay and replaced it.
Note, I had never done that before. All proud of myself, I turn the phone back on, it works. Yay. Microphone doesn't work. Boo! I tried using a headset but that doesn't work either, so I figure, it's a software problem.
Since I already reset it to factory settings (was still on Gingerbread) and there is no new carrier update (o2-Germany) for this phone, I go ahead and root it succesfully. I wanted to install 4.3 on it using CWM and wanted to flash ParanoidAndroid v3.99 ROM firmware as well as Google Apps.
After that I got stuck in said Semaphore Logo, looked for a quick fix and downloaded Odin OCD and ran it... without checking what I was doing which left me with the AT&T World Phone logo flashing on and off.
QUESTION:
Will a JIG help me in this case? And if yes, what should I do once I'm in the download mode again?
I've invested so much time in this crap phone already that I won't admit defeat. I'm even looking on ebay for some broken i9000s where I can rip out the motherboard and place it in mine. If all else fails, this should work, right? Right?! And when it does work, what can I do about that friggin microphone?
Hey
U can try a jig. Make one at home..just YouTube or Google it..
1. Download your stock firmware from sammobile.com
2. Use Odin to flash it. Jig to put it in download mode.
It worked on my international sgs..!
Best of luck

First IF your phone is AT&T its not i9000 but SGH i897 or CAPTIVATE, which means you are in the wrong Forum your forum is here look in Q&A stickies for guides.
for all Samsung phones you can get guides and tools for entering download mode in MY Android Solutions
So make sure what phone you have by looking under the battery and ask MOD to move this post to the correct forum for correct answers
Check this out! You , YES! you are an " Android ". Not your phone but U.
Can I just say how much I like the way you've formatted this post. Its clear and straight to the point, perfect
As for your problem, the only way to fix this is to use a jig as @tchindalia described, then flashing via Odin.
Just asking, if you have an international I9000 though, why is there an AT&T logo? I thought the AT&T version of the Galaxy S was the Captivate...?
Sent from my GT-P7510 using Tapatalk HD
@tchindalia Thanks for confirming, I just ordered a jig for 3 € on Ebay, shipping included
@xsenman I am sure it's a Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 with no simlock and no branding.
@Soryuu Thank you
The reason why there is an AT&T logo is because I downloaded Odin3 OCD to fix the first Semaphore boot logo problem I had. The problem with that was that Odin3 OCD was designed to rebuild Captivates and not the international version of the i9000s

you wont need USB, JIG as its in boot loop due to wrong bootloader, the reboot tool should get you download mode, link given earlier , unless that fails than you should try JIG. good luck

I couldn't get into download mode using the methods you mentioned
Something which I find weird is that the phone will flash the AT&T logo, but as soon as I connect the usb cable, it goes dead.

yup weird indeed, sounds like micro usb slot or cable ( should be original Samsung Cable) is causing the problem, anyway you can do some experiments by following this till the USB, JIG arrives. I would look seriously into misaligned pins and looseness.

The cable is an original Samsung one and it works on my Galaxy 2 without a hitch. I will give this some rest until the JIG arrives, I think I've truly exhausted all other options for now. I will update once I get the JIG and see what happens.
Thanks for all the help so far and have a great day!

I got the JIG and it works again! Installed a normal base rom (the right one this time) and all is good...
... except the friggin microphone!
It still doesn't work! Even after I replaced the damn board. Any ideas?
