Trouble with Captivate. - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, recently i bought a samsung captivate, switched over from iphone and i am pretty familiar with jailbreaking iphones and able to do that. however when it comes to android phones and rooting im lost.
okay, the captivate i got from a dude off craigslist, and he said it was suped up and extra fast and rooted. i thought okay well that sounds like a great deal let me check it out. however, homie didnt tell me that he took off the original captivate software and now i have an at&t samsung captivate running on galaxy 19000 and not the original software. I am not able to find anywhere instructions on how to put the original software on the phone and get it back it the brand new factory default. I am not sure if i unroot it would that take the 19000 galaxy Os off and then the original would come back? or do i need to download the original? i cant even find that ive looked all over samsungs website.
Like i said i am pretty good with messing around with iphones and im sure if i just got a step by step instruction on how to fix my issue i could do it i just need some help from someone who knows how and where to find the tools i need to do it. I really appericiate any help you can offer. Thanks!
Phil

You can get back to stock, but the i9000 roms are much better then stock. It is likely if you like to play with your phone that you would end up flashing in no time.
What rom are you on
Settings, about phone, bottom

Find the galaxy s (not captivate drivers), then use odin 1 click downloader to revert to stock.
Step 1: install drivers
Step 2: got to download mode. Easiest way is to turn off phone, remove sim and battery, put battery back in, then hold vol up and down buttons while inserting usb. If you get a yellow android symbol that is shoveling, you're golden.
Step 3: use the odin 1 click to revert to stock. On the odin screen, you should see a com port light up and at the bottom "added". If your device is in downolad mode click start.
Step 4: set your phone down, don't touch anything, and watch the magic.
Step 5: (optional) donate to design gears, the person who will have really saved your butt.

u can try this single post if u wan to reflash to original rom..
it got everyting inside.

Check out this thread. Also check let us know what rom you are on using the instructions some one posted above.

it's the best place to start. I wish i had started there.

[Q] Sooooo Im pretty sure i f****d up big time....

So i decided to go on a Flashing spree today for no reason, i just felt like it..
I started out by flashing 2.2 on my 2.1 phone, that all worked out quite well, but for some reason i could not root it. ( I used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=845558) It all worked out nicelly but since i could not root it, i just game up on it.
After searching i found http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475 to revert my phone back to its original firmware. I have a Galaxy s Vibrant, so i thought it was the correct thing. But since i installed it i have alot of problems.
First of all, when i plug it into my USB the phone auto turns off. And it will not charge when the usb is in.
I have rom manager installed, but when i try to run a rom, i keep getting the error (status = bad ).
Also the phone wont recognise my SimCard so i cant stay with this firmweare anyways.
flash back to a stock Froyo
then boot into the Recovery Mode
then wipe data, and wipe cache
see if that helps
Do you know the best place where i can get a stock froyo rom ?

It looks like you flashed the actual "Vibrant" (T-Mobile US) type firmware onto your Bell i9000M phone... I dont know if you can flash back as the Download and Recovery modes for the actual Vibrant are different than the i-9000 model phones...
@Allgamer, can you be of any further help?
btw i really hate Samsung right now, why would you release a phone called a i-9000m Vibrant, then release a phone under the brand name vibrant

I agree with you on this man. How confusing could they make it? I guess they did it to sort of distinguish our model of i9000M from the International version but couldnt they at least give a different name from the U.S. model?
They even look identical except for the fact that the U.S. Vibrant has 4 soft keys at the bottom where we have the 2 soft and 1 hard key...
Well now that my panic attack is over and my phone is back to normal after Flashing 2.2 on it ( FOR I-9000m even ).
I have another random question..... what is the best way to root 2.2.. since the whole point of the **** up was because i would not root it

I recommend the app called z4root by RyanZA. You can find it on the Market. It is a one click root that requires no flashing of any kind.
You may have to start the app and if it seems to hang for a while just perform a reboot and run the app again and it will root within 30 seconds. Also be weary in the Market as someone has stolen the icon and everything from RyanZA and the "rip off" app is NOT complete. Make sure the one you download states it is from RyanZA...

[Q] Bricked Phone PLEASE HELP!

Ok guys, clearly I'm new to all this. I've only had my Galaxy S (I9000m Bell) for 3 days now and already managed to brick it.
So here's what happened, I wanted to flash CM7, what I did was rooted obviously, I unlocked since I'm with Rogers and the phone is from Bell. Installed Rom manager, titanium back, Terminal emulator, Astro, etc. So I'm pretty sure I have the required tools. I also flashed SpeedMod Froyo [K13D HPCall VoodooSnd4 SharpnessFix STABLE].
Alright so I noticed I couldn't boot into recovery from CWM even though I flashed it using Rom Manager, I tried fixing this for a while with no luck. I then came upon a thread discussing the 3 button combo fix for download mode. I wanted to get this done just in case what happened happened lol
So anyways, I couldn't find instructions for Mac so I tried putting the pieces together using terminal and Heimdall.
The last thing that happened to my phone was that I was able to get into download mode using adb reboot recovery.
However continuing to the next step to apply the fix wouldn't work for me using heimdall, it would just fail.
Being the idiot that I am I decided to exit in terminal, closed heimdall, turned off the phone and turned it back on and guess what...yup I'm screwed. It's bricked.
Now the problem is I don't have 3 button fix, so I can't get into download mode (even if i did, i wouldn't know what to do).
I read about the jig fix but I don't know if i have any other options, hopefully something faster that I can do myself instead of buying the jig and having to wait for it to **** from ebay.
Sorrry for the longgg post and hope anyone here can help me! Thanks
PS. I tried using terminal again to get to download mode like i did the first time (adb reboot recovery) and it didn't work...it said no device found or something like that
Hi It seems your only option short of looking for a repair shop or sending phone to Samsung is to try the JIG. If you don't know how to approach this print any of the diagrams or guidelines e.g. look here.
What you can do is go to electronics part shop and ask for help with the jig ask the man to wire the resistors to the pins in usb plug just to see if the phone kick starts if not, well you're screwed.
If it works just buy it if not, google for repair shop with Riff Box and JTAG adapter for I9000 it takes about half a bell to do it (repair I mean). But if it's new you have to return it in for repair.
I guess you should get the jig one way or another, either visit electronics parts shop, ebay-it
hope this'll help somewhat.
cheers
If you're in the vancouver area, you can swing by and use the jig I made
Thank you both for the feed back.
@Tony I'm actually in Ottawa. I found someone on Kjiji that also made his own but wants to charge $10 and he lives too far away so I just went ahead and ordered one off ebay for $9 with shipping.
I read on the xda thread regarding the JIG that it the phone doesn't boot at all and just shows a black screen with the bricked image (as opposed to loading the carrier name or samsung with a white screen before) that it won't work and that is my case. Anyways I hope it works, just gotta wait and see I guess. I just don't even know what the next step would be. What do I do once I'm in download mode? :S
EDIT: NVM about the whole white screen, black screen thing, it says that the JIG should work if I see the PC-Phone logo which I do.
Three days huh? Wow, when you do it, you really DO it. Reading your description it sounded a bit like a Med student doing a brain transplant.
First I would just take the phone back to your carrier or service center and say you have no idea what happened, pay the money and have them sort it out. I fear there is no easy way out of the hole you have dug.
Next you should spend a few hours reading as much as you can here and then start small. Ask questions before you do anything. Root the phone. Try a few different kernels and lagfixes. Maybe flash something from doc's kitchen or a custom ROM. Make sure you know in advance what could go wrong and how to handle it, as much as possible. Once you have some experience then try something like cm7, which is very much a beta on the sgs and quite complex to flash and set up.
Spend a little time walking before you run (no matter how much you think you know) ...you'll enjoy the trip more.

Haha I can't take it back to the carrier, I bought it off kijiji, it's from Bell and I'm with Rogers. I unlocked it and as far as I know Bell is really bad with their warranty and last time I bought a Blackberry that was locked to Bell and unlocked it I was told by Bell that I need a receipt, which I obviously don't have. I would rather throw the phone away and buy a new one than have to deal with carriers.
I'm just gonna try the JIG I guess since I already ordered it. Hopefully doesn't take too long to get here.
And yes, I definitely need to read more and follow the instructions on a Windows PC instead of trying to put bits and pieces together and try to get everything working on Mac.
It seems however that the more I read the more I get confused, is it just me or are there so many different ways to achieving the same thing?
Anyways, I bought this as my first Android to experiment and learn on and so far that's what I've been doing. I'm not afraid of running into problems, I'll try to enjoy fixing them

You are right that there are different approaches to doing the same thing...often it is just a matter of what works for you.
Once you have a jig you will have no trouble going in to download mode. From there anything is fixable using odin. I would suggest reading the thread about darky's resurrection ROM which is a good place to start from when you have had trouble.
Just remember to do your homework and enjoy the process.
Good luck.

Sounds good, will definitely keep that in mind. Thank you for your help, very much appreciated.
Hey guysss!
I just wanted to let you all know that I am a biggg IDIOT! LOL
So I ordered the JIG from ebay and on my way home I went to a couple of electronic stores to try and buy those resistors because I wanted to make my own JIG as well. Anyways, all the stores were closed and my friend told me he can grab the resistors from his lab tomorrow (engineering students lol)
I obviously don't want to wait till tomorrow. I came home and decided to take out the phone from its box again. This time I did the 3-button combo but in a different way, not using volume UP + DOWN + power but I came across a Samsung PDF explaining the Anyway JIG and it showed to press Volume Down + Home button + Power.
I gave that a try and voilĂ !!! I'm back in download mode! YAYYY!
I'm afraid to turn it off or pull the battery out cuz I don't want to risk ruining it even more so I'm gonna go ahead with rschenck's suggestion and use Darky's Resurrection Rom!
Thank you all for your help!!
Uh oh...one last problem
So as of now I am able to access Download Mode but not Recovery:S
Any ideas?

If you can get to download mode you are fine for the moment since that is what you need for odin. Follow one of the guides for using odin here at XDA exactly, and good luck.

Ok so after download mode, I followed the steps to reflash stock, i downloaded the same JL2 that I had prior. Odin said passed but the phone wouldn't boot, it would just get stuck on S in the boot screen...
I did a complete wipe data/cache through recovery and that didnt help.
I then thought I would give Darky's Resurrection a try since it wipes everything anyways...odin again said PASSED but there was a sign of a circle on the screen and it didn't boot. I did it again, said passed again and this time im on a endless boot loop. It turns on says samsung i9000, etc. and then blinks and does it again.
I am still able to get into download mode. I just don't know what to do anymore
Download mode = Yes
Then download stock firmware from samsungfirmwares.com not 2.3.3
or from link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846913
Download ODIN
Flash stock firmware through Odin with pit 512 and repartition checked .
If that fails try Eclair firmware 2.1

Ok so I did the above instructions and I the same happened. I am on JL2 now but it wont pass the boot screen (Stuck on the S). I did check repartition and 512 pit and pda.
I also have this error:
Can't mount DBDATA: copy default media content failed
My question is if I try eclair will I lose 3 button fix? From what I was able to gather the 3 button fix for Bell I9000M only came out with JL2.
Will I lose it or is it permanent once I have it?

[Q] Soft Brick (Phone-!-Computer)

I have the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S Captivate.
I rooted it some time ago and I figured now would be a decent time to try to load a ROM on there: I decided on CyanogenMod.
So after reading all the hype on here and reddit I chose this tutorial to follow: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Captivate:_Full_Update_Guide
First thing I had to do since I already had root access was to install ClockworkMod Recovery. I got to about step 6 when my phone was still in download mode...Nothing was happening. And that was my first issue...No where on that guide does it says what is supposed to happen...According to it, nothing happens. So I continued on per the guide.
Got down to step 8 and my screen on my phone went white...Nothing was happening and the progress bar on my computer monitor was stuck at 4%...And stayed that way for a good 10 minutes.
Finally unplugged, and now I have the nice little Phone-!-Computer picture.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
I can still get to download mode if I plug in my usb and holding the volume up/down.
From what I've researched, I'm going to try a different USB cable, perhaps mine is bad. (Better safe than sorry!)
Also it seems my next step is to do this...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=775911
(This doesn't say exactly what version of "Odin3"...I'm assuming it's the one below.)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
Am I on the right path?...Would like to hear I'm at least on the right track and perhaps some clarification on where I went wrong in the first place.
Thanks in advance for anyone's willingness to assist.
If the steps don't work you will need a Jig. The Odin you linked is a JF6 1 click wich doesn't always play nice on newer build phones. You can however download odin 1.8x and the JF6 package from samfirmware.com
Thank you for clarification on the Odin version.
I will have a jig on the way, just in case this doesn't work...hopefully I won't have to resort to that and I can handle it this weekend.
Well best of luck. Having a Jig is always a good idea. As a second note. If you can find one without bootloaders you minimize the risk of hardbricking. Although the time it takes to flash the bootloaders is less than a second per, but if by any chance your cable decides freak out or you unplug by mistake or w/e worst case scenario happens you minimize the chance of a hard brick. Just my 2 cents
Got it...Cyanogenmod 7 installed.
Best tutorial was on youtube titled:
Samsung Captivate/Vibrant (How To Install CyanogenMOD 7) *LATEST METHOD*
By MobileTechVideos
But now the question is...
How can I get the google app store on my phone to install all my favorite apps?
Cyanogenmod offer the .zip that will flash google apps. For some reason google asked them to not offer as one.

[Q] I think its Bricked..and odin doesnt work

hey guys i have a captivate that i tried flashing and was successful then i tried again and the screen went black. im not sure if my battery died during the process or what but idk what to do. I cant get into recovery mode, i can only get into downloading mode but none of the odin's ive downloaded have recognized my device today. they worked fine yesterday. then i tried "hemidall one click" to try and get it back to stock but no luck. also when i try to power on I get the "Cornkernel" loading screen since that was the kernel i had loaded when it was working, but it fills the bar then shuts off. so it seems like im going to be at the mercy of a computer program since i am unable to access anything on the phone, right? I recently upgraded to gingerbread before all of the flashing of the new roms. all i want is to get back to either froyo or gingerbread, i dont really care, heck ill even take 2.1 at this point. if anyone knows whats going on and can help me thatd be great.
Thanks
Remember to use a rear usb hub for destop and run as admin. Heimdall will mess up your odin drivers.
You may also want to check out the captivate connection issues thread.
Also, to clarify further on prbassplayer's point about Heimdall, it will write its drivers over the drivers assigned to the USB port you are plugged into when it detects your phone. So if you have 4 USB ports and you use port 3 for Heimdall, it would look like this:
1 - Odin port
2 - Odin port
3 - Heimdall port
4 - Odin port
All this means is that you'll need to be aware of the port you used with Heimdall, or just reinstall the odin drivers (they'll overwrite the Heimdall setup).
OK so i tried what you mentioned in that thread on the connection issue and unfortunately it didn't work. is there a way i could start fresh? like delete all the drivers from my computer and then try it again, or do u not think that would work? im open to any ideas/suggestions right now because i hate having an extra paperweight and the thought of buying a new phone.
Don't know if this'll help or even why it worked for me but, when I had problems with odin recognizing my phone, I reinstalled/repaired samsung kies and odin would work for at least one flash.
Note: used full odin (not oneclick)
Good luck
hey guys thanks a bunch i finally got it to work. i had to use a different computer like you said. What a great feeling to have a functional phone again..
Thanks Again!!
So i got the phone back up and running android 2.1 and I would like to get it back to the stock 2.3 I had before the whole mess of rooting and stuff. but when i try to upgrade with kies or straight on the phone it ends up failing and telling me to try it again. any ideas why this is happening? or how to fix it.

Kies sucks lol
look at my sig the first "go to" has the One Click Odin file to get you to stock and rooted 2.3 ...should take no more then 5 mins to do it

Try looking >>HERE<<. There are more one clicks there than you will ever need (hopefully)
Thanks I think I might try one of those. But considering what happened earlier in the week i want to clarify/ask a few ?s about that page. How do I know which Gingerbread to use of the 3 listed? How do I know whether or not to click the one with or without the bootloader? I'm new at this with android but I used to flash roms on my old windows mobile htc TILT.

if you have never flashed GB bootloaders, you need to. Just oonce will work from that time forward. After you flash bootloaders, it's best to avoid them. A bad bootloader flash is one of the few things that will turn a Captivate into a paperwight. About which GB to use, I would say KK4. Its the same as the Official KK4 that was released. So to recap, flash bootloaders only once, then use no bootloader packages after that.
Im not sure if I unlocked them or not honestly. I know i had the phone rooted at one point and was running Cerberus rom. is there any way for me to check?
If you don't know, flash them.
ok i apologize in advance if this is a stupid obvious question..i got the odin one click and i was looking at the page u referred to me to and im wondering what the kernel is for? you cant place it in the odin one click obviously so is that just to keep things together or do i actually need it?
The kernel links are just to use if you want to root the stock rom. You have to use full Odin for those. Stick with the one click until you feel more comfortable in flashing AND do a lot research before your next flash.
so i got the KK1 gingerbread working and everything seems to work fine but now my data doesnt work. So I cant get ATT 3g or edge or anything the only internet i recieve is wifi. anyone know why this is? or how to fix it. ive tried a reboot and nothing ive tried changing the settings under network settings.

Ruined My Phone?

My friend told me to do a software upgrade on my phone so I followed some of his instructions. First off, I managed to use ODIN to reset the phone and I have installed a version of Honeycomb onto the phone. Now, I could easily swap back to Gingerbread, but I have two issues. When I can get the phone to start, it looks like a tablet! Everything is small, and when I connect my USB to my computer to put something onto the internal SD it won't actually open up in my computer? Secondly, it's now not even starting up into the phone, it's stuck on a black screen with a light blue ANDROID logo just pulsating. It won't go further.
Any help?
I now know not to trust my mates. Heh.
Which phone do you have? Honeycomb is for tablets and you flashed it on a phone. Luck for you that you didn't brick your device.

First visit My Android Solutions, link below...do the first step . Than visit My Android Collections ( link below) and use a i9000 rescue kit to recover
I'm having issues understanding your tutorial. I've tried powering it down and removing all of the components and restarting after 30 seconds but still no luck.
Yeah, I downloaded and installed HoneyComb which is a tablet software. It looks like a tablet. But right now, all I get on start up is a flashing "ANDROID" icon, it won't go any further.
I'm sure I've ruined it.

Nope, you had messed it up, but its still recoverable by going into download mode and flashing a stock ROM with PIT, use the i9000 rescue kit from My android collection link below , and use the WIKI to get better understanding of your phone
