[Q] Display quality differences between two SGSs? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
I've got the Samsung Galaxy S (classic version, distributed to Europe) just like my brother or my friend. When I look at my and at someone else's SGS, I can clearly see the quality difference of the displays. My phone looks much better, the colors are more natural. We're using the same fresh ROM, even the same kernel, and everything. Can someone tell me how it is possible? Did Samsung released more "versions" of i9000s with improved displays or something like that?
Thank you.

They didn't release 'new' versions, its just some are wierd. My friends i9000 has a pixelated and washed out display. Just happens i guess. I got a good one, its going strong like yours.

With mine being a couple years old the screen has a nasty green tint to it, or I should say used to, until I ran the colour calibration. Looks perfect with a little tweak. Big tweak actually

AMOLED Displays lose brightness and colour over time. I really noticed it when my display was replaced by Samsung. Now the colours are bright again.

[Q] Problem with the screen's colors.

Hello, I bought my I9000 about one year ago. My brother has an older I9000 and many friends have newer devices. I just noticed that my I9000's colors are weaker and un healthier compared to other devices.
The colors on the screen are weaker, especially the blue colors. I don't 100% sure but I think that more colors are weaker. I took a shot of my galaxy near my friend's galaxy when they both running the same facebook application.
My galaxy is the device on the left.
It's very noticable and very annoying since it has to be exactly the same. I'm not sure, but I think that the problem was since the first day I bought it. I just noticed it few days ago when I used my friend's galaxy.
Any advice?

check your brightness level
Settings - Display - Brightness
or if your phone was rooted, and the rom/kernel has voodoo controls, you can make your phone twice the brighter as normal. my lowest brightness in settings (with voodoo controls RGB multiplifier and gamma hack) is just as bright as the iphone's MAXIMUM BRIGHTNESS. or i think mine is more brighter. (WHAT MORE IF I SET MY BRIGHTNESS IN MAX? LOL)
First of all, thank you for your answer.
I'm using full-brightness all the time. I do have darky rom, your voodoo suggest is very interesting, I'll check it. But any way I'm pretty sure that it's not the problem. He's using the same rom I used a few days ago (DamianGTO) and still he had better colors when I used it.
I have pictures of the two phones but I can't upload them to the forum because I'm new.. I'll upload them after I'll get the permission.

SGS has two kind. the Super AMOLED and the Super Clear LCD. the amoled has brighter color compare to the clear LCD, and cost higher than the super clear LCD.
the super clear lcd is just like the iphone4's retina display

Same here, My SGS from is one year old and I just got my girlfriend a brand new SGS, hers is stunishing bright and crips, mine looks decolored next to hers.
This is "normal" behaviour on AMOLED screens, they bright so much that they deteriorate in time, you must have noticed some burning in your screen, specially in the clock area when having an all white screen. Our screens are just simply more burnt, that's why don't look so bright as a new phone
Well, as I said, my brother's older I9000 had better colors, so it's not about the age of the phone. Any way, I flashed a kernel that supports the voodoo colors change, and I changed the colors. Now the screen's colors are way better, and even better than my friend's I9000... So it's all about the colors settings. Now I'm happy with my screen

[Q] White GNote AMOLED Display, any issues?

Many have complained about problems with the GNote's Display. Does anyone here have the white version of the GNote? How's the display?

I have/had a white one... On mine there were no probz at all.
However, i didn´t test it that crazy... No banding and no abnormal pixelation of the blacks atleast.
Atm it´s in for service... Had a complete crash... Maybe that will be the white version faults
^ What about the issue of faint horizontal and vertical lines especially on a white background at minimum / maximum brightness?
I have a white one as well. no problems at all

Have a White G NOTE ... no problems with the display!
^What is the Month of Import?
the white ones suffer from the same problems as the "blue" ones! seen two of them, both had the "classic" faults: one had a very strong tint which got worser on the right side of the screen, the other one was considerably darker and had a yellowish tint over the whole screen! both had the black clipping issue and cut the gamma test at 4 (in standard mode)!
VERY IMPORTANT:
i had a LOT notes so far, all of the screens were faulty to some extent. only 2 out of 14 had a correct (or at least much better) gamma calibration/value, but both of them had other severe problems (one side tint, unevenness)!
also to notice the "blotch errors" you have to display a black picture, go into a complete dark room, let your eyes accommodate and see for yourself!
AS LONG AS YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO COMPARE YOU WONT BE ABLE TO TELL IF YOU HAVE COLOR TINT (only if its really dramatic), I THOUGHT A FEW TIMES MY SCREEN IS NOW REALLY GOOD IN TERMS OF COLORATION, BUT EACH TIME I WAS ABLE TO OUTPERFORM IT DRAMATICALLY WITH AN OTHER DEVICE!!
SO: IF YOU THINK YOUR SCREEN IS FINE: DO NOT COMPARE!!!
otherwise you WILL get worried!!!
just my 2c...
have a white note from movistar in Spain and has the display and camera problems.
+1 to what TML1504
@OP
I think you are looking for a more objective reply rather than a subjective one, I recommend you stop your search for now and probably wait a few batches later.. Maybe 4-5 months from now? If the S2 was a sign of things to improve it really did after 6 months.
I'd figure since new models are set to release, Samsung must have already addressed the problems in the newer Note sooner than it did for the S2.

I was able to check 3 brand new white colored galaxy note from 3 different local shops and they have the video issues the same as mine which the store rep confirmed after we sent the file over and had them test in their storage room, which is my primary concern.
With just a quick glance, I can easily tell those units still show lines, dirty grey renderings and yellowish/greenish bottoms on the screen, this is with an objective result, subjectively the lines are not visible when viewing pictures of anything other then grey or browsing websites with brightness not lower than 2 notches.
I dont think they can or will address this as fast as the common screen issue everyone has is very subjective to the user and only those that are noticeable get returned, some insist on using a higher brightness just to cover it up.
Boycott Samsung 'till Further Notice, LOL
Sad to say, even the latest S2 display is better than the Note. The latest S2 batch corrects a lot of the problems that existed in prior batches. I've seen it myself; thats to easy to appreciate. Too bad Samsung doesn't give a damn about their own flagship products.
EDIT: @EarlZ, not a personal question, question to Samsung, Why would I want to conceal the problems that exist by decreasing the lifespan of my product; raising the display brightness will in turn reduce the lifespan of the AMOLED Screen, lol.
Its been like 3 months or less since it came out from the market so its a given that it will take a while to improve.. give it another 2-3 months more.

So what's the procedure to test for this? Any particular video to play, or a site to go to?

On a subjective side, you dont need to do anything special just use the phone how you would normally do and if you dont see anything that bothers you or any image abnormality then simply the issue does not exist on the phone, If your a new buyer just perform the things that you normally do and might do and from there draw your own conclusion, Like others I do not know the exact ratio of good to bad screens/phones but subjectively a majority of the phones should not have any issues on the screen.
If you want to perform something more objective you need to be more open to the methods, there like 3 active threads about it you can easily read up there.
I have a white note for the last 3 days, and due to a few threads about display and other problems, I have been especially looking out for them. but so far I cannot find a single problem with the display or any of the other problems that people have been complaining about.
It was bought from Amazon Germany and shows:
Android 2.3.6
baseband n7000xxla4
kernel 2.6.35.7-n7000xxla4-cl886827 [email protected] #2
build gingerbread.xxla4
If that is of any help to anybody.
But I'm not looking at it with one eye on the screen and one on a spectrometer
just my ol eyes, which to those it looks and works fantastic.
and also my 25 year old son, his eyes should be better than mine also says it looks fantastic to him, and will be getting one soon
seeya
It seems as if the German build quality / manufacturing process of the Galaxy Note is superb! Enjoy your Note.

After using Nexus 4 a few hours, I decide to sell it...

Hi everyone, Nexus 4 is my very first Android phone in my life, I used to use Iphone even though I'm not an IFan. Here is my 2cents why I have to sell it.
Screen Display
Yes !! Nexus 4 comes with TRUE IPS LCD, seems like the same thing on LG OPTIMUS G which I saw at BB and I like it very much. But Nexus 4 is worse than Optiomus G's screen (IDK why?). First of all is it's brightness, my eye is get used to iPhone scrren which has white balance > 600 cd/m, Nexus 4 I bielieve is 470 cd/m ( Optimus G is 471 cd/m but idk why it so much brighter)
Second, the color saturation is so bad, comparing the my Iphone 4s beside, I can tell 4s screen is more colorful, better exposition and nicer contrast.
Low white balance hurts my eyes so badly when browsing website even in a bigger screen...
Except those reasons above, Nexus 4 is the good phone.
Good for you. Bad reasons in my opinion, but I digress
I bet everyone cares
cool story bro.
hopefully the other 3 posts you have made on this website have been just as insightful.
LOL, instagram hipster....
All those "problems" were fixed with gamma control. You lost out on a good phone.
Oh well, in the end it's all about what you want. If you want brighter and over saturated colors then go for it. I keep my phone on auto brightness, it's far from the highest brightness and never had a problem with it. The color seems nice, a little more realistic I think rather then over saturated. The iPhone's do have a nice color though from what I've seen but not a huge difference.

^^yah this :good:
i don't know what a cd/m measures, but visually comparing my screen to my wife's iphone there is very little difference (apart from size) ...
If you like saturation and good contrast then try AMOLED devices like the S3, it might not look as good as the iPhone though. YMMV.

Too be the screen can be very bright?? I keep my brightness on very low, colours are very nice imo but i think you are an ifan

Would you recommend this phone to a new buyer?

Hi all,
I'm interested in what people think of their phone? I'm an interested buyer and know that talking to people here can be very useful before a purchase!
I bought a cool phone a few months ago but it has one terrible point - the battery is crap (1320mha). The S3 Mini has 'only' 1500mha but I notice in reviews it ranks really well for battery, more like a 1800-2000mha battery. I'm also very interested in AMOLED which doesn't use an LCD backlight. (more vivid colours, black uses tiny battery, white uses a lot).
Why I like this phone and might buy it:
- battery performs very well in online reviews, especially for web browsing which I need
- the latest Android, good specs for future upgrades
- AMOLED screen doesn't use battery-killing LCD backlight
- Good size for one hand, I'm a grown man but not a bear, my hands are not huge
Anything anyone would like to say about their phone?? Anything annoy you about your phone?

I love this phone! Was after a decent upgrade for my Desire S and this is perfect!
My only real gripe is the power button...stupid place to put them on the side, as I sometimes turn it off when it's in my pocket! Never happened when it was on the top with my DS.
Also got over the low PPI which isn't actually THAT bad.
It's fast and is perfect size IMO.
My only real problem with this phone (coming from a Dream, a Cliq, a Vision, and a Doubleshot) is the lack of a hardware keyboard. Other than that, this device is great. Cyanogen just needs to leak us the recovery source code.
Would I recommend this phone to a new user? YES
Good Points
------------------
Great Battery (with moderate usage I can get a day and a half out of it)
Front and Back cameras (Excellent for video calling)
Jellybean
Quick and responsive
Bad Points
-----------------
No notifications LED
Poor positioning of power button
Low internal storage (but fixable)
No flash (but fixable)
Poorish screen resolution (but not a big issue)
Awful email client
Bugs in jellybean
Lots of Samsung bloatware
Although there seems more bad than good with this phone once you root the phone you can sort out a lot of them. You can use bloatware remover to delete samsung's bloat. The internal storage limit can be fixed so instead of your apps being installed to the internal sdcard they get installed to the external sdcard. You can download flash for ICS from adobes archives. The main gripe I had was the lack of a notifications LED meaning you don't know if you've had a missed call if the screen is off. There is an app called NOLED which addresses this and other apps that flash your cameras LED. There are quite a few things I had to sort out before I was happy like getting a 3rd party keyboard as the inbuilt dictionary was rubbish and an installed widget called zoom messaging kept on crashing.
One problem the S3 Mini has is people will compare it to its big brother the S3. This is Samsung's fault for trying to pass this phone as a smaller version of the S3 when it is not. However it is still a very good phone in its own right.
You don't need to install additional apps to get flash light. There is widget called "assistive light" for it.

My old Nokia N8, also amoled, had the screen 'always-on', but almost black and with the clock shown in dark grey so it used very little battery. This was a great idea imho, considering doing a mod to do the same on the S3 mini. This could integrate well with 4.2 and the lock-screen widgets.

Hey buddy. Yeah, that fits in very well with what I read about AMOLED, I read up on it recently as I because semi-convinced that the backlight in LCD screens are evil An organisation of companies involved in AMOLED production and development have a free PDF online which explains the technology simply and why it's better than LCD in their opinion. They did say that black on the screen uses very, very little energy but white uses a LOT of energy. So we would properly feel the benefits of the darker UI on Android with an AMOLED screen, whereas LCD would use the same amount of power regardless of the screen, so they claim.
I will definitely take your handy tip on the black screen and simple, grey clock...wish I could do that to my mobile broswer!
Does anyone use this phone as their main music player? How do you like it? My current phone has a music player that sounds much better than my iPod but the phone battery is terrible.
Also, would I be right in saying most people get about 1 day and a half out of the battery? I would like to use the phone for about 1hour-90 minutes of news reading, a couple of emails, 1 hour of music with earphones, 5 minutes of calls per day. With that my current phone cries like torture.
yes this are mid range phone and will update in lime pie someday
good battery bcoz of the novathor chipset.

Amoled burn still exists??

I'm wondering whether led burning is still a problem. What is your experience on your amoled device? Are the new ones burn-free? Even after 2 years of use?
I think, it doesn't exist now.
Amoled burn-in still exists, but advancements in both the technology and production process has made it occur less often for consumers.
There are still other issues to think of other than burn-in that still exists in amoled displays today. Right now, Samsung produce the best amoled displays.

The use of a pentile matrix (Samsung amoled) for brighter display and lower power usage at the cost of image clarity. Colours are usually over saturated but can be adjusted to your liking.
