I am trying to upgrade to the CM 10 or the slim bean builds on a phone I rooted and upgraded to gingerbread long ago.
I seem to be stuck in the middle of things and cannot follow any of the instructions I find on the googles.
my phone is rooted, i can run titanium.
I am running:
gingerbread.uckf1
Kernel: 2.6..35.7-i897uckf1-cl273832
firmware version: 2.3.3
When I follow instructions that want me to enter recovery mode I appear not to be using CWM recovery as it says:
Samsung Recover Utils
- for BML -
which lead me to instructions to use odin and add a cwm recovery file.
Those instructions say to enter Download mode. Unfortunately, Odin never recognizes my phone when I am in the mode listed above. Is that download mode?
**** Edit Download mode is different it is entered by pushing volume +/- and inserting USB ****
so I am trying to figure out what I should do. I am trying to ultimately turn this into a tablet for my kids.
any help would be appreciated.

I usually follow this plain and simple guide from Cyanogen website.
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Captivate:_Full_Update_Guide
Hit thanks if I helped you.
It appears that you still have to install CWM as the stock recovery module is still poping up. No odin will not detect your phone in this mode as it is recovery and not download mode. If you don't mind temporarily downgrading to eclair then you could use:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989. To downgrade then simply download CM, rename the zip as:update.zip. All you have to do after that is copy the update.zip file to your sdcard not in any folder. Go into recovery mode and apply update package. In any case you might want to back up any valuable information.

Looking in the About phone area it says my Kernel is 2.6.29 [email protected] #2 which i'm assuming isn't a stock Kernel. I can't get into download mode or recovery to save my life. Any good ways to get it back? Everything I've tried doesn't work. I'm curious about this android sdk adb access thing but I haven't been able to search about it. Thankfully my phone works right now but the only way i know how to flash stuff it through the key method.
Any links to a tutorial about this adb thing? ALso, where to download the android-sdk?
Thank you thank you thank you!
wrong section
WRong thread but dont wanna flame... : D
This happens some time, just flash this and you will have 3 button recovery again.
EDIT: STUPID ME, just realized you cannot get into recovery... Well use ADB to get into Recovery then flash that
Android SDK - http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
Make sure u have Java JDK installed! - http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html
Sorry idk about a good ADB tutorial though
That is a stock kernel.
1. This is a stock kernel
2. Which 3-button combo did you try? It can be either +-USB or -Power

I can't get into download mode or recovery mode. I've flashed quite a few different roms since i've had this phone and never had a problem. For some reason this time when I went from MikeyMike01's GR-12 2.3.3 back to stock with Odin3, I lost the ability to use my volume buttons + power to go anywhere. I was trying to install CWM to put Serendipity 6.4 on my phone because the other one was having some weird issues.
Thanks to everybody else for the links I'll try them when I get home... work is blocking the android sdk download website. I'll update in a bit with success (hopefully).
If all else fails, you could extract the 3 button fix posted above, and odin.
No buttons working? Pull batt, open odin, insert usb, reinsert bat, and it should go into download mode..

skip all that .... if it boots upto OS and you just have no 3 button..... Use This
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944418 and flash 3 button with it. Access to recovery or dl mode not needed. Just be sure to follow the instructions with the tool. It works. Simple.
Moved to proper forum.

before i tell you an easy way to get into recovery, was this odin "oneclick" or did you have to add a .tar file to a "PDA" slot and perhaps a .pit file and others? this is highly important because 3-button fix only flashes the secondary bootloader. if you still have 2.3.3 bootloaders this will brick the phone! there needs to be an update to the 3-button fix to flash both bootloaders. a quick test if you have 2.3.3 bootloaders is if the phone says "galaxy s gt-i9000" you may have 2.3.3 bootloaders on the phone. on 2.3.3 this screen is part of the bootloaders as well as the param.ifs, flashing 2.1 without the bootloaders will show the i9000 splash before the att param.ifs splash
if it was odin oneclick you are safe to flash a 3-button fix. if it was odin full you may still be on the 2.3.3 bootloaders and dont have button combos due to some incompatablility with the phone, i saw this once. please use odin oneclick first then see if it still needs 3-button fix.
if you need to reflash with odin "oneclick"
look up "adb" make sure you know how to manually install drivers. there are links in posts above
if you did flash with oneclick then you can also root and use rom manager to reboot into recovery. then flash 3-button fix via update.zip. search dev section for designgears' 3-button fix, there is a update.zip version.
why do u need the three button here...just hold down the volume key and the power button to get in to the recovery. worked for me.

I used Odin oneclick to reset it to stock. I've been moving this weekend so I just left the phone on 2.1 but today at work i'll try the method you mentioned above. I didn't even think about rom manager to reboot to recovery i'll try that first. I was trying to reboot the phone into recovery so I could install CWM. Sounds easier than the other methods.
My SGS does not boot and does not enter recovery mode. I can enter download mode though. I suspect it happened after I removed some files from SD card.
Can I access SD card in download mode?
How can I use download mode to restore firmware and the recovery?
Thanks in advance.
u have to reflash your firmware. if u get only downloadmode working u can only reflash your device.
try a custom kernel first. if this wont work, then flash new firmware
Strange.from download mode you can only flash firmware.I think u can use adb and connect your phone to computer.try little search on topics don't rush first read carefully.
[email protected]
@malcho
adb wont work in download mode. only in cwm and after successful boot
So I understand I need to connect to PC in download mode and then use some software like ODIN to flash a ROM? Correct?
thats right.
may u can flash via kies, if u want a stock rom from samsung
I didn't know that info about adb. Thanks for info
[email protected]
Well, it's strange but looks better. Even before I did anything with ODIN the phone booted into the new ROM but I still cannot get into recovery. Seems like ROM installation procedure deleted something essential to run the recovery.
So now I have the download mode and Android working.
I am trying not to make any sudden moves so that I won't lose to ability to boot the ROM. What would be the best way to restore ClockworkMod recovery?
What ROM are you running now?
From a running stock-ROM the easiest way is to flash some custom kernel that includes CWM.
Here's a list http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966646
For 2.2.1-based ROM I prefer Speedmod.
For 2.3.3-based, choose your own
edit: There are some ROMs/kernels that can only enter recovery when USB-debugging is on.

I've just switched from Darky's 9.2 to PilotX with 2.6.35.7-I9000X[email protected]#Beta4.2_1 kernel.
From what you are saying I understand CWM recovery needs Linux kernel to run. I thought it's a stand alone boot-loader independent from the OS and kernel.
I installed CF-Root-XW_NEE_JVH-v3.2-CWM3RFS which comes with CWM recovery via ODIN with no effect. I still cannot reach recovery mode.
My phone came with 3e recovery which I downgraded to 2e (I don't remember how I did it then). Is it possible it has something to do with the problem?
You should always flash to stock when you have an issue.
You can also use Darky's resurrection (at least, part A: Pit with re-partition)
Then flash the original firmware (from samfirmware.com)
Thanks to everyone.
The problem was solved using http://www.v00d00.co.il/GBFINAL.pdf guide. Note, this guide is only relevant for Hebrew PilotX ROM.
Greetings friends,
I am a tablet flashing veteran and I need your help. I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" T-Mobile (SGH-T849) which I have flashed to CM7 using Heimdall. The flash appeared to be successful, and I used the Clockwork Recovery app to flash the recovery module. Now, no matter what I try, the tab will ONLY boot into recovery. It will not boot to an OS.
I can even use the CWM recovery console to flash a new image, but it restarts back to recovery!
I've been searching for the stock firmware to see if that gives me control, but all of the download links are broken. To make matters worse, this tablet isn't mine, so I'm facing the fact that if I can't recover this thing, I will have to pay to replace it.
I am able to get it to download mode, and I've tried ODIN'ing several images as well, but still, it just restarts to the darn recovery console.
Please help!
Thanks.
restock using Overcome Method:
Go to overcome site
Http://www.teamovercome.net
Read the guide,
Missing pictures can be seen here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20974872
Follow the picture step by step.
Basically to restock:
Download GB-stock-safe-v5.zip, unzip it and and flash with ODIN according to the guide.
Stop there and you will have Gingerbread JQ1
You can continue with the rest, and you will get Overcome 4.1 and you won't regret.
From there you can then try AOKP or CM9, all requires you to have Overcome Kernel with its CWM recovery to flash.
Hi!
I have a Samsung Galaxy S I9000B that can't enter download mode, i've tried many methods (except the jig), and there no way :crying:
I bought this phone (used) mainly for music, about 3 months ago, so i upgraded from froyo to GB 2.3.3 and then to CM 10 and then to HellyBean Rom (Android 4.3, CM 10.3?). Now i wan't to go back to GB to recover the digital tv tuner, but my volume down button is broken, so i can't go to download mode via combo buttons.
ADB reboot download just reboots normaly.
Downgraded to CM10.2 -> same thing
Downgraded to CM10 -> same thing
Downgraded to CM9 -> same thing
Downgraded CM7.2 -> same thing
Can't downgrade anymore...
I have no problem with recovery mode, but there's no option for reboot into download mode, tried different kernels (and recoveries).
Before i try making a jig i wan't to know if someone can think in another way to go to download mode, maybe a zip that i can flash via CWM that makes the phone reboot into download mode or any way to remap the keys to boot into download mode.
Any help will be appreciated.
Best regards!

Thanks for the reply, but i already tried your methods (except the jig), but having a broken vol. down key is the main issue.
The button remapper app works at Android (OS) level, isn't it? i need to have the buttons remaped in the bootloader, so i don't think it'll work
I was thinking that maybe my bootloader is the problem, because i already tried different kernels and roms and adb reboot download still won't work.
How can i flash a bootloader without entering download mode? can i flash it via CWM? which bootloader can i use for my device [I9000B]?

for bootloader you need to find a stock i9000B ROM that comes with it, alternatively you can try and flash the i9000 14 toggles in CWM, that would give you download mode function from your Notification tray. ( should work but NO guarantees, so make nandroid backup before flashing). Also some themes have this (download) function, from power button too ( you need to locate them for i9000B, search in theme & App forum)
ok, look at this its the speedmod kernel, you can use this kernel meant for i9000, flash and do not reboot but enter CWM and reboot into download mode, just another option.

Mate, try with the Jig, you can buy it on eBay for ca $2 or even build one yourself. It enforces boot into download mode.
You can't attempt to flash a bootloader without the download mode.

If there no other choice i'l try to build a jig...
My last hope i think is Mobile Odin, anyone knows if it'll work fine on the SGS I9000B? any advice?
Edit: Just tried Mobile Odin, it says "Incompatible partition layout"
i guess the jig is the only way

Yep, Mobile Odin is AMAIK designed for newer devices like i9100, N7000 etc.
The jig will do good work for sure, don't worry. Your phone must be off when you connect it.

Mobile Odin is compatible with I9000B, but not when using CM or MIUI.
Anyway, i finally did it!!! :victory: :highfive:
I found this thread in CM forums: http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/...load-and-recovery-mode-after-flashing-kernel/
That gave me the clues to solve this.
1. Downloaded SpeedMod Kernel [GB] CWM version, and extracted zImage
2. Copied zImage to sdcard and flashed it using "flash_image boot /sdcard/zImage" through ADB
3. Then "adb reboot recovery"... bootloop...
4. Then i booted with 3 combo button for recovery and voila! SpeedMod recovery! with "Reboot download" option available
5. Reboot in download mode via CWM and flashed stock Froyo rom with PIT and repartition checked, and then flashed GB rom with no problem at all.
Now i'm gonna celebrate :victory: :victory: :victory:

You could use adb to get in recovery.
Otherwise, use Odin to flash stock in download mode.
NB.: Flashing with a broken power button is really tricky and dangerous on the S1 has it needs it to recover from bricks.

You're gonna have to start reading. I'm at work and don't have time to write a tutorial.
To answer your questions, yes there are tutorials (google is your friend). It is fairly simple to use. The phone does need to be booted.
As for Odin, there are one-click version which are really easy to use. Stickied threads ftw http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18370912&postcount=3
Either you go back to STOCK using Odin/Hemidall , Root it and Flash a Custom Kernel like Speedmod/Corn
(or)
Flash a Custom Kernel through Odin;
Download a custom kernel like Semahore/Corn/Speedmod (.tar version) depending upon the android version you're using(GB/ICS/JB/KK). Then place the downloaded tar file in PDA and Flash it (dont make any changes in the other fields). After flashing, Try going to recovery mode( by Volume UP+DOWN )..It should open recovery now.
Cheers!
PS: If you're man who likes to play with custom ROMs on Captivate(with broken power button), Its High likely that sometimes you'll get stuck with NO Recovery+NO Download mode, for which you'll need USB JIG to fix your cappy
