ICS keyboard and Sms - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I would like to know, is it possible to keep a stock rom, and have the same keyboard as Cm 9? Don't know if it's the same as the normal ICS one. I use the ICS keayboard app from Google Play, it's really good, keyboard is the same, but I liked the way it underlined the wrong words in red, a bit like Microsoft Word!
And also, is it possible to have the same type of sms app? With the pictures of our friend always shown for new sms's and not just bubbles.

For your first issue. You wont get it to underline in red, because that is handled by the SMS app, not the keyboard. and why are you on XDA and using GB anyway?

So, this can't be done with a stock rom?
I'm on XDA because I used to have a Custom rom, CM9 then, Remics. But I use Tango quite often and apparently this app doesn't work with roms so this was kind of a deal-breaker. Moreover, tha camera app and the browsing experience was better with the stock rom, easier to watch Flash videos on my phone

Best keyboard App? Handcent vs Chomp?

Ok I've downloaded apps and bought better keyboard like a retard...my phone isn't rooted and I don't play on rooting it..I just want a keyboard thats as close to the iphones as possible cause the regular android keyboard ain't up to my spec...Or something like swype I'm just looking to hear reviews on keyboards people have tried and stuck to...also have a question about handcent and Chomp which is really better?

Download one, try it for a few hours or days. Download the other, rinse and repeat as needed.
There is no 'really better' or best one - of anything!
There is only better for you, or better for me.
Personally, I send/receive 2,500-3,000+ texts per month.
I have tried both Handcent and Chomp. They both have cool features, but neither was good enough for me to keep installed for more than a day or two.
I received my N1 on Jan.08, and promptly rooted it by the 14th.
I bought BetterKeyboard last year for my G1, but the novelty of COLORS MAN on my keyboard quickly faded.
I used the HTC_IME on my N1 as soon as it was available, and now I'm rockin' the Swype Beta right now AND LOVING IT!
Best Keyboard right here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624416
Its free and doesnt need root. Just install the HIRES version through a file manager such as astro or Linda File Manager and enable it through settings. I love this keyboard, especially after all the modifications the developer made.
hmmm, just installed. don't see a difference. rebooting now, maybe that's the deal
edit: no. long press only offers android keyboard still as only option. :/
I am a little confused. You’re asking which is the best keyboard, then you list SMS applications as the alternatives to choose from?
Keyboards:
Personally I am loving Swype, really cool! Not so good for typing out non dictionary words, but it does the job. If you don’t like the concept of Swype, HTC_IME is by far the best. Really nice looking and very easy to use!
Sms Applications:
I personally prefer Handcent SMS over both stock and chompSMS. It just has a nicer look and feel to me, and a few more customisation options. And i love the quick reply! (I only look at the threaded view when i need to look on past conversations)

You have to first go into Settings->Language And Keyboard. Then enable the keyboard that you installed.
They all have the same name as the application (Better keyboard, Swype, etc) EXCEPT HTC_IME, where it will be under Touch Input.
After you have enabled it, long press on '123?' then you can choose between the currently installed AND enabled keyboards.
Hope that helped

[Q] Noob question about the theme of SGS messaging (SMS) client?

I'm coming from WinMo/WP7 to android, and I'm very happy with my purchase of SGS I9000. However there is something that kinda bothers me,
I've tried the stock ROM, Darky's, Ultimate, and a few others, and the annoying thing (for me) is the blue theme and feel of the messaging (SMS) client which is there in almost every SGS' ROM.
I prefer to have the original (plain black) theme of android's messaging client, as I don't really like the black-blue theme of SGS.
Is there any way that i can get the original android's skin back?
(Currently Im using the Darky's 9.5 ROM if its important.)
Many thanks
I think the default AOSP android SMS has a white background, certainly that's what you get in CM7. The MIUI ROM has many different themes but that changes the whole look and feel of android. AFAIK only the stock Samsung SMS has the black screen.

[Q] What features would you like to see in a rom for your thrill?

Just to get used to the android OS dev side I am going to attempt to blend Meego/Maemo features with android. I will be using the V10k firmware as a basis.
I'm curious as to features you may wish to see in a rom. My main goals are:
Tri-screen functionality: Custom home, Apps, Running apps (Similair to Meego)
Customizable folders for the app screen
Onestop Keyboard (Swype, switch between qwerty and T9/numeric style)
3d functionality remaining
Possible Debian install
Removal of ALL spare apps. If it isn't required, it's gone.
EDIT:
Possible extra features
Option to uninstall apps from app screen via long press.
Option to hide/lock apps
EDIT (Final):
PROGRESS: Android is a surpisingly easy OS to work on and there is a LOT of devel to look at in terms of starting points for coding. I currenty have a debian distro runningwith the android OS. Apt-get works fine, however there is not enough space install any application. This Rom may either be out very soon, or depending on memory issues my be impossible without relying on an SD.
Unlocked tether and wifi hot spot
I'm most concerned with battery longevity. Don't know if you'd call that a feature, but to me it's one of the most important parts.
Wish List for new ROM on LG Thrill
I love this Thrill, for the most part, but I wish that the Phone app, where you see the
Dial, Call Log, Contact and Groups, would work same way as the Stock Android does... basicaly, take out the Groups and put Favorits.
This Group to me is very slow every time I click on it takes 5 to 10 seconds to load.. and then I have to presse the Favorits... which I use the most... so..
Yes, I have about 1700 contacts on my list, but even with just a just contacts, this buttons GROÜPs is very slow.
Also, I wish that the Flash on teh 3D camera mode would work, because right now, only in 2D mode is that the Flash works... I think it is just a setting in some internal files or on the Camera apps that blocks the Flash when in Video or still pic.
Thanks and let us know if these changes are possible or not.
Ron
WIFI Unlock and tether: I belieive its been done on other roms so it should be no problem
Battery: I will see what I can do. The ROM will just be a bare bones OS so there should be very little to eat up the battery.
Contacts to favorites and camera flsh: I'll have to look into this and let you know.

There is a reason behind the flash not working during 3D. They blocked it because the light from the flash messes with the 3D camera. Sure this could be a feature still, just saying this doesn't work for a good reason.

I was actually thinking on waiting for the Gingerbread update before starting. The update should be coming anywhere between novemeber and the end of december.
If I wait, then it will give me a bit more time to get familiar with android as an OS andcome up with various way to get the maemo/meego/android mix feel just right. Progress has been fairly fast however. I'm still having memory issues with the debian however. Also, the UI get very buggy. I might just look into utilizing some outside programs.
How would you guys feel if I outed the stock home and keyboard and replaced it with someothing like GO launcher and keyboard?
As long as the keyboard has the speak to text capability, because although mines rooted with thriller, i don't like using swype just to have that option.. it should be on the default keyboards too.

Stock android keyboard has speech to text. Its just disabled by default. I don't use the LG keyboard so I don't know about that one.

Something else that would be nice is the ability to reboot into recovery. Not a big deal but a nice feature.

Maybe Undervolting, anything to help battery life... patiently waiting for the Gingerbread update to arrive for the Thrill
The reboot option is actually a great idea Ill look into that, I probably will not have an undervolt OR even an overclock option as Im sure it will require a custom kernel. Kernel are something I rarely play with and when I do it's only a temp thing.

The reboot option is used in thriller, oops wrong reboot. I think there was a reason the reboot to recovery didn't work, I remember reading about it in thriller thread.

Messaging without left/right bubble/boxes?

Is there any way that I can go back to the look of Messaging from Android 2.2.2?
I've just moved into my Note (running ICS 4.0.3) from my trusty old Dell Streak, and am very disappointed to find that messaging uses the common speech bubble layout, which I hate. 2.2.2. on the Dell presented messages in a black and white text format, one message underneath the next, and I'm extremely keen to get this back on the Note.
Is there any way I can either tweak Messaging 4.0.3 to look like 2.2.2, or else can anyone recommend a messaging app that doesn't use left/right side speech bubble/boxes but presents messages in - dare I say it, at the risk of sounding arrogant - a more adult way?
Thanks.
That isn't the ICS messaging app, it's Samsung's skin. There are a few different messaging apps such as GO SMS but I've never used any.
Many thanks.
I've installed Handcent and I think I may indeed be able to tweak it to my liking. Under a "Bubble settings/conversation style" you can choose "Android", which is very close to what I'm used to.
Problem solved - I think!
Good to hear you solved the problem. The beauty of Android, if you don't like something change it!

Are you talking about the 160 character limit? I don't know that there's a "fix" for the stock messaging client. Not all phones can handle messages over 160, so you could run into issues dealing with other phones/networks.
You could try another SMS client. Pansi is awesome for GB, and has a toggle for the 160 character limit. It's my favorite messaging app and fully themeable. GoSMS was also nice, but I don't recall the ability to toggle the 160 limit.

The stock messaging application works well, and I use it on occasion (actually, I've trimmed things down and use it as my primary right now). It just splits large messages into parts. Some carriers can't or won't deal with large messages.
Pansi is really nice. I'd use it with adfree; the older version of Pansi was a no-ad option, but they've recently changed. It's still an awesome app.
